Subject/Grade: Biology

Date: Mar. 23, 2016

Standard:
S4.C3.PO2. Describe how organisms are influenced by a particular combination of biotic (living) and
abiotic (nonliving) factors in an environment.
Objective, SWBAT:
Compare and contrast biotic and abiotic factors.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT:
List the living components of an ecosystem.
List the non-living components of an ecosystem.
Compare and contrast biotic and abiotic factors.
Evidence of Mastery:
Students will take a quiz that asks them to compare and contrast abiotic and biotic factors; a
score of 4/5 will show mastery.
Key vocabulary: biotic, abiotic, population, community,
ecosystem, & biome

Materials: 16.2 PowerPoint, 16.2 PowerNotes,

projector, lab notebooks, writing utensil, and
introductory ecology quiz

Guided Practice

Instructional Input

Opening/Anticipatory Set:
Weve discussed populations and how natural selection impacts them. Today we will be looking at the
surrounds that those populations live in.
Teacher Will:
Use a PowerPoint presentation to
describe the levels within an ecosystem and the
difference between biotic and abiotic factors..

Student Will:
Listen to the explanations and take notes
of the most important facts, using the
PowerNotes if they choose.

Differentiation
Students who have difficulty writing can be given the PowerNotes (guided notes) for the
students to fill in. Also students who are unable to write may use a computer to type their notes.
Teacher Will:
Show videos that discuss the different
levels within an ecosystem and the interactions
of biotic and abiotic factors.

Student Will:
Pay attention to the videos and take any
additional notes as directed by the teacher.

Differentiation
Students who have difficulty writing notes can be given a fill in the blank worksheet to go
along with the animation.

Practice Independent

Teacher Will:
Provide the students with a quiz that
covers the ecosystem levels and biotic/abiotic
factors.

Student Will:
Complete the quiz individually.

Differentiation
Students who need extra time may complete the quiz during lunch or after school.

Closure/Lesson Summary:
When talking about ecology what is the main idea to keep in mind? What other questions about ecology
do you have?
