SUMMARY OF CLINICAL ACTIVITIES

I was given the opportunity to practice dental hygiene care at local dental clinics in San Mateo
county. This experience contributed greatly to the development of my clinical skills. I gained invaluable
experience outside of my school's bubble. I predominantly saw patients from a low socioeconomic class
but it further validated for me the existing gap for dental care between socioeconomic classes. My patients
had a deep appreciation for my work and it was a gratifying feeling to be able to change their attitude
about oral care. One patient had already lost most of her teeth and I did my best to educate her about
denture care. Upon seeing redness and swelling, I kindly suggested for her to remove the dentures daily
for a few hours to let the environment breathe. She reassured me she would do her best to keep her
remaining teeth as well as care for her dentures.
Treating a diverse pool of patients will ultimately train me to enhance my clinical skills and even
expand my experiences. The single most important thing I've learned so far is to reach out to all patients
about their dental health. I was never taught how to floss as a child and with each passing dental visit, it
became more and more embarrassing to come up with the courage to ask the dental personnel to teach me
how to floss. I vow to be thorough with my patients and even introduce them to products they may have
never seen before. Introducing a new product for the patient can possibly help them and motivate them
towards better oral self care.

SUMMARY OF SERVICE ACTIVITIES

I have volunteered for a handful of oral health events. I enjoy volunteering my time to help
promote the profession but to also help develop other skills, such as fundraising and public health. My
favorite service included promoting oral health to children at a continuing education school. The program
was geared towards special education students to prepare them for independence. We had 5 sessions with
rotating groups and we taught them about the relationship between plaque and caries, demonstrated the
Fones technique, and educated them about nutrition's role in the caries process. My experiences have
really enhanced my confidence in reaching out to various populations. I enjoy teaching the audience on a
one-to-one level and encourage them to practice brushing puppet's teeth to improve dexterity.
MENTORING NARRATIVE
My mentoring position was a wonderful experience that gave me a taste of the skills necessary to
become an educator. As a clinic mentor, it was challenging finding the right words to help your students
understand your instructions. I wanted to also maintain my patience with the student under times of
frustration. I remember what it was like being new to clinic and it was frustrating to learn the new skill but
to have the support of the faculty made a world of difference. I want to be an effective educator and I want
to inspire the new clinicians to be confident.
