II.

Rationale
We are all aware that every person is unique one is distinct from the other in a number of
respects. It is further proven by our different origins, capabilities, worldviews, and ways of living
that set individual differences, which lead us to progress and innovations. At the same time, it
becomes the root of disharmony among us. Diversity, hence, is a powerful reality and tool that can
either bring us to successful heights, or take us down, when right balance is not reached.
Language has been a great instrument in connecting people. Despite different backgrounds, it
has become flexible enough to achieve understanding among us. Therefore, it disproves the idea
that diversity cannot enable us to meet at a single point. Diversity poses the challenge while
language is the one that eliminates the barriers. The latter draws us closer to one another.
Thus, the Reading Camp 2016 with the theme Discovering, Embracing, and Promoting the
Language of Diversity is an avenue that will allow discovery of how diversity works in our society
and how everyone looks at it, how it should be embraced, and how to advocate respect and proper
viewpoint at diversity, by the power of English language.

V. Specification of Activities
Dancing Books- A mob of dancers will gather on the grass facing the CTE Hall, after the Opening
Mass. The difference of this from previous Reading Fests Flashmob is the additional human props
portraying books of different kinds by every faction and the rest of the members will wear some
creative manifestations of the content of the book the group decides to represent. Aside from
emphasizing the value of reading, it also invites openly the other students to join the cause of
promoting the value of reading and to take part on the activity.
Literary Competition: Divergent Edition This activity will display and enhance ones oral and
written communication skills. It is taken on a different light as it centers on discovering, embracing,
and promoting the language of diversity. For oral communication, the Story-Telling paves way to
a discovery of personal stories that make one remarkably different from other people, the
Interpretative Reading shows how tolerance and respect can conspire to embrace the truth of
diversity, and the Extemporaneous Speaking allows the advocacy and promotion of proper mindset

and attitude towards our differences. On the other hand, in written, the Essay-Writing puts these
things (discovering, embracing, and promoting) together as it must revolve around the main theme
while Poetry-Making puts more highlight on the diversity of human emotions, which will be read
by the writers for a later event.
Whispers of the Heart (Part I and Part II)- Given that February is a month designed for
celebrating the wonders of love, this activity provides an avenue for the participants from different
year levels to feel the varying emotions that spring from and with love. It is a creative and heartfelt
way of presenting emotions through poetry reading, as every poem mirrors the present stand of
ones heart. Divided into two categories, the first one is to be held in the afternoon for elementary
and secondary levels and the other in the evening for tertiary level. The first category is anchored
on the theme, Celebrating the Diversity of Emotions.
Lecture Cum Demo-Teaching- This activity will provide lecture-demonstration lessons that aim
to build awareness among the future teachers on the up-to-date pedagogies in teaching Grammar
and Literature considering the needs of the present-generation learners. The speakers will be the
BUCE professors in the English Department.
Search- This Search will widen everyones perspective on individual differences; assigned with
different virtues or quality to uphold, the candidates shall speak and act with skill and conviction
according to what he or she represents. Production number, Character Exposure, Picture Analysis,
Reenactment of Selected Scenes from the Divergent series written by the contemporary writer
Veronica Roth, Question and Answer Portion, and Announcement of Winners will comprise the
entire activity. It will be held at Bicol University Integrated Laboratory School (BU-ILS)
Elementary Department.
Amazing Race- This activity is educational in purpose, at the same time, it allows the participants
to display unity in spite of distinct preferences and conflicting ideas. The test goes with the tough
decision-making they must work on as a group to overcome the challenges of every station.
Quiz Bowl- This activity will assess how much have they learned in the Lecture Cum-Demo
Teaching and how vast is their knowledge on the subject area English, both in Grammar and
Literature categories.
