Areal Grid Special Controls

Isotropic & Anisotropic
Isotropic smoothens out dog-legs
Smoothness factor
Controls the spacing and distribution of grid lines
Orthogonality factor
Produces I-J line intersections as orthogonal as possible
Honour fault end
Attempts to put a grid corner at the fault end
Tolerance setting (distance) collapses grid lines within the
vicinity of the fault end

Fault Handling Overview

Vertical Coordinate Lines

Transmissibility across I & J faces only
Sloping Coordinate Lines
Cells in a column are in the same fault block
Transmissibility across I & J faces only
IJK Zigzag Stair Step
Cells in a column can be in different fault blocks
Transmissibility is across I, J & K faces

Vertical Zigzag - IJK Faults

Rescue only
Faults are zigzag in cross-section (k)
Each cell in column may have different Block ID
Uses fault surface not the traces
Transmissibility across I, J and K faces
Transmissibility control via MULTNUM and MULTREGT keywords

How to Set-up IJK Gridding

Y-faults, Reverse faults:

View Fault Framework to identify

Y-faults and/or Reverse faults

Set Gridding Controls to Zig-Zag
In the Vertical Gridding tab, set
Faults to IJK
FloGrid will automatically grid
complex system

Reverse Fault Gridding Rescue only

To allow FloGrid to use extra k-layers to model repeat section in a reverse fault:
Gridding Control tab: reverse fault must be selected as zig-zag and set to
ignore slope
Vertical Gridding tab:
Set Fault as I, J & K faces
Set up layering as proportional with user-selected number of layers,
then click on Set Layering & note the total number of layers
Click on the Advanced Layering

Select the bottommost unit

Use Refine Selected Block Units to put in Y extra layers with 0 weight,
where: Y = #layers noted before * number of reverse faults

You will see in the log window a message about the total number of

reverse faults FloGrid has detected as well as the number it is allowed

to create

Final Review: Guidelines for Modeling Faults

Sealing faults should be gridded using I or J control

lines/polygons
Truncated cell option available (snap-to-fault)
Non-sealing faults can be zigzag
Use IJK zig-zag option for Y faults, intersecting faults
Slope grid along reverse faults or use special IJK-Reverse
Consider HC zone while choosing slope
Noisy fault surface can affect IJK fault gridding
