Brochure
Description:

A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date:
3/26/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 15

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop

Objective:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Use quality images and portray a message that is clear
Use Photoshop and InDesign

Process:
For this brochure I set up my Indesign document in two pages. I used a ruler to half the page
on both sheets. I then proceeded to used a background image that was a water color pink.
I designed my teacups in Illustrator. On the bottom I used a green bar that was repeated
throughout my brochure.
On the inside I set my paragraphs and headings so they all matched. I then used different
sized pictures to create a visual hierarchy. I used the green bars to continue the repetition in
my piece. I also used my spoon image for the text wrapping. I I used a few more images on
the inside to help bring color and interest.
On the back of my brochure I changed the background to white. I used a green bar for a
repeating element. I used a monochromatic color scheme.

Montage
Description:

A spiritual montage made by blending two different images, using typography and putting a
filter on one of the images.

Date:
2/13/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 15

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Photoshop

Objective:
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements

Process:
I downloaded three separate images. I then used the temple image as my background and
sized it to 8.5 x 11. I opened the vintage couple in a different window and used the magnetic
lasso tool. I set the feather to 40%, went around the part of the image I wanted. I then placed
the vintage couple in the upper left hand corner and used the black paint brush. I set the
opacity to about 50% and softened the edges, and blended it with the temple photo. I put
a sepia filter on the vintage couple to help the color flow with the overall piece. placed the
modern couple in the bottom right hand corner and used the black paint brush, set at 50%, to
get rid of any lingering background. I kept the couple solid and did not blend them in as I did
with the vintage couple. The modern couple represents the now so they are solid, while the
vintage couple represents the past, so they are blended. then used the clone stamp in the left
hand corner to get rid of a lamp post. I used the eyedropper tool and took the color of the bow
from the modern couple groom and used that color for the font.

Imaging
Description:

Demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. Using a specific color scheme in a
poster layout with an original photograph.

Date:
2/16/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 15

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Photoshop

Objective:
Learn basic photography skills, use a color scheme and design a poster around the photo. Know
how to crop and adjust picture in Photoshop.

Process:
Once I selected the photo I planned a color scheme that would enhance the poster and not
fight against the photo. I used red monochromatic color scheme because it seemed to
compliment the photo the best. I was really looking for a good contrast but harmony at the
same time so this color scheme worked out the best for my photo. I uploaded the photo to my
computer and in Photoshop I used the following to adjust the photo from its original format
to the format it is in the photo. I used levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance. Once I
adjusted the photo I started to design the poster. I wanted the design to be simple so I went
with some basic shapes. I started first with the shape on the left. I wanted it to cover part of
the photo to create visual interest. I then used different sizes of the shape and different shades
for a good visual. I then used simple rectangles to create repetition and harmony in the poster.
I wanted my photo to be in the center because I wanted it to be the main focal point.

Event Ad
Description:

This is a color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraising event using only Microsoft word
and a scanner.

Date:
2/2/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 15

Programs/Tools Used:
Microsoft Word, Scanner, and Zamzar (PDF converter).

Objective:
Understand image sizing and how pixels work. Use a scanner. Create a full bleed design
and use a color scheme and type face that are professional. Learn how to design in Microsoft
Word.

Process:
I used a scanner to scan an image from the BYU Magazine. After uploading the scanned image
into Word, I played around with the different color filters. I wanted to use only the colors
pink for the multiple photos because pink is the main color used to represent fighting cancer.
I used different shades of pink to create contrast, harmony and repetition while keeping with
the theme of pink. I also offset the pictures for visual interest, to create movement. I wanted
to show the different stages of the final kick, to highlight the main theme of the event, Score
goals against cancer. I used really bold font for the title because I wanted to attract the
viewers attention and used smaller more simple writing for the information about the event.

Stationary
Description:

Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo.

Date:
2/29/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 15

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Illustrator

Objective:
Create a logo for a company. Use logo to design business cards and letterheads. Use proper
typography. Keep designs simple and include the proper information.

Process:
I used the rectangle and circle shapes, and layered them on top of one another to create the
look of a cellphone. I then place a large letter A on the cellphone because that is the first letter
in my business name.
For my letter head I wanted to be simple and understated because it would be used to write
on so I didnt want to clutter up the page. I used simple blue lines to run across the top and
bottom. I also used the letter A as a watermark to remind the user of the logo of the company.
I also placed my actual logo in the top right hand corner and made it smaller accompanied by
the name of the business in contrasting type and color. On the left hand corner I placed my
name and business details in smaller type because I did not want to take away from the logo
and company name.
For my business cards, on the front I wanted to use my logo, so I made a clipping mask. I
want my customers to know my logo and be very familiar with it. On the back I included
the same information on my letter head. I used the logo but this time I centered all the
information and so it flowed on the card. I tried using different alignment but it kept throwing
the card off and making it look unprofessional.

Web Page
Description:

A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Date:
3/14/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 15

Programs/Tools Used:
Notepadd ++, Illustrator, Khan Academy and W3schools.

Objective:
Create a webpage with an original logo. Know how to use HTML and CSS. Use hex colors to
match colors properly.

Process:
I used my logo as inspiration for the web page. I wanted to use the same colors, or colors that
were in the same family for the whole page. I stayed with a lot of blues, and accented with
black and grey. I used really bright colors on font that I wanted to stand out, and really dark
font for the large sections of text that would take longer to read. I used a thicker boarder to
mimic the look of my phone. I also added a little more of a margin so the writing doesnt look
too cramped. I adjusted the heading so my title fit properly, before it was hanging too low,
but I brought it up. I then adjusted my logo so it aligned with the text and was equally spaced
between the header and the first paragraph.

Logo
Description:

Create a logo for an organization

Date:
2/25/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 15

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Illustrator

Objective:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image. Use
Illustrator tools and market research to know if you are reaching your audience.

Process:
I originally made three separate logos and had family and friends vote on them. My original
logos were very simple in design because most logos in life are simple. However I readjusted
my logos and gave them a little more dimension but not much because I wanted my logo to
be simple. I stuck to basic shapes and colors like the examples that were given to us, especially
the examples given in the sample blog. I used vibrant and bright colors because it is a paint
store I am representing so I wanted something attractive and fun. I also used two different
types of font that really contrast because I wanted the type to really stand on its own. I based
my ideas and design off the many simple logos that I see every day when I am out and about,
and I thought it was important to channel that simplicity.

Objective:
Use a personally created logo and design the front and back of a business card using the
principles of design

Process:
For this project I used basic shapes found in adobe Illustrator to create my letter head and
business cards. I used simple colors that would be calm and eye catching. I used the rectangle
and circle shapes, and layered them on top of one another to create the look of a cellphone. I
then place a large letter A on the cellphone because that is the first letter in my business name.
For my business cards, on the front I wanted to use my logo, so I made a clipping mask. I

Flier Project
Description:

Black and white promotional flier for a graduate conference

Date:
1/23/2016

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 15

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Illustrator

Objective:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.

Process:
The creative process on this flier first began with sketches. I played around with different
shapes using the design principles from the chapters we studied. I used the thick black lines
for repetition, and the white circles above. The repetition of these pieces creates unity and
familiarity throughout the flier. The focal point of the flier is the title itself, I highlighted the
one word to really grab attention. I used smaller print for the body copy and used white space
to help offset the shapes and wording.
