Unit Plan Template Guide

Understanding By Design Framework

Course

Science 6

Units

Developed For: Mr. Basi- Balmoral School

Time Frame

Air/Aerodynamics
Flight
April 4-22, 2016

Stage 1 Desired Results

Philosophy (Science):

Childrens curiosity provides a natural starting point for learning

Childrens learning builds on what they currently know and can do
Communication is essential for science learning
Confidence and self-reliance are important outcomes of learning
Children learn best when they are challenged and actively involved

Science Inquiry

Problem Solving w techn.

(AB GOV) General outcomes:

1.1
1.2

1.3
1.4

Bring focus to investigative activities,

based on their own questions and
those of others
Describe materials and objects that
have been observed and manipulated,
and identity what was done and found
out
Construct, with guidance, an object
that achieves a given purpose, using
materials that are provided
Demonstrate positive attitudes for the
study of science and for the
application of science in responsible
ways

(AB GOV) Key objectives

Air/Aerodynamics
6-5 Describe properties of air and the interactions of air
with objects in flight
Flight
6-6 Construct devices that move through air, and identify
adaptations for controlling flight
Big Ideas:

Air is a mixture of gases

Air behaves like a fluid
When and object moves through the air, there
are forces acting on the object
The shape of an object moving through air
influences the strength of different forces acting
on it
Control of a flying object is achieved by
changing the flow of air around its surfaces
Space crafts do not fly in air and are designed
differently from aircrafts
Every problem had a context and component
parts

Stage 2 Assessment
Performance Task(s) during unit
-Using the components of air and flight to create blueprints for a flying machine
(must be a detailed labelled diagram showing how air and components of flight will be used to help your
machine fly)
-Build your flying machine
-We will testing our flying machines outside for:
- distance
- movement

- most exciting flying

-creative design
(prizes will be awarded!)
Rubric for performance
