Montage

Montage

Description:
An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of
typography.

Date:
2/16/16

Course:
COMM 130 14 (Online) - Jason Stucki

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
Select good quality images

Process:
I first selected a quote that I wanted to use and selected a temple and then I started designing.
On the background chevron patter I applied a Hue/Saturation mask to change the color.
I pasted the temple on and applied a layer mask to better blend the temple into the image.
I then included the texture picture, changed the opacity, and set the blending mode to Darken.
Then I selected the text I wanted to be the focal point of the quote and chose two typefaces.
During he process I changed the placement of the text to be more like stairs leading to the top.

Logos

Logos

Description:
A logo for a photography company.

Date:
2/20/16

Course:
COMM 130 14 (Online) - Jason Stucki

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will
appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to
them.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares,
symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it
with the pen/pencil, but delete the image before submitting.)
Refine one logo with variations for color.

Process:
I first started sketching a few ideas by hand to get an idea of what I wanted to do.
Then created a few of those designs in Adobe Illustrator to see which ones I liked best and
narrowed down to three logos.
Next I refined that logo and then added a different color to it until I found something fitting.
They were then placed on an image next to each other to see what the the final logo would be.

Process:
I first started sketching a few ideas for a logo and then created it in Adobe Illustrator. I was able to
tweak it to use it in Adobe InDesign and start creating a letterhead. I brainsotrmed a few ideas and
created some of the best ideas before choosing one to refine. It was the refined until the client

Objectives:
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for stationary. Photos are okay on business card
and letterhead as additional design elements. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above
center on a vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use
periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.

Process:
I first started by sketching ideas for a logo and creating some of the best ideas in Adobe Illustrator.

Imaging
Description:
A project to demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. An original photo within a
design.

Date:
2/6/16

Course:
COMM 130 14 (Online) - Jason Stucki

Program(s)/Tools:
T5i Canon Camera
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the
layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (nondestructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.

Process:
I started first by choosing a color scheme. I decided on the color I did because it was warm and
inviting unlike the winter outside. I made the caramels and the cookies and I took the image with
my camera. I used the regular yellow light inside because I wanted the image to be warmer. I
then brought my photo into Photoshop and used these specific editing techniques listed in the
Objectives. I then created a document in Photoshop that was 8.5 x 11 where I created my design.

audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:
I was able to start with a css document that had some coding in it already. I created an html
document and inserted code to attach the css document to it. I resized my logo created in
Illustrator to fit well on the page and then included it on the website. I then edited some of the
code to change the color and placements of some objects.

Brochure
Description:
A pencil shaped accordion fold brochure about tutoring.

Date:
3/25/16

Course:
COMM 130 14 (Online) - Jason Stucki

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop
Microsoft Word

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One
should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape
of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:
I first started by creating a logo for the client. I then moved into InDesign to do a few different
brochure layouts before deciding on one to pursue. Next I collected the images and created the
text I wanted to use. I edited some of the images so that they could be text wrapped or have a
transparent background. Then I included the text and images while fixing problem areas that did
not show up before they were included. The brochure was critiqued and finalized before giving it
to the client.

Flier
Description:
A black and while flier created to promote a leadership conference.

Date:
1/24/16

Course:
COMM 130 14 (Online) - Jason Stucki

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process:
I started by creating a sketch 1/4th of the size the flier was going to be. After sketching and putting
my idea on paper I created two of the designs in Adobe InDesign and selected the one that was
more appealing and then refined it further. The lines used at the top and bottom are for repetition
and to appeal to a younger audience. Graduate is emphasized to create a focal point with the
contrast and to show that those who have recently graduated should take an interest in it. I was
provided with the information, picture, and logo to include on the flier.

Event Ad
Description:
A color event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Date:
1/30/16

Course:
COMM 130 14 (Online) - Jason Stucki

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
HP Scanner
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process:
I scanned the image of the man that I used, and was able to crop the image while scanning it. I
then choose to work with rectangles because that was the shape my image was in and it did not
look well cropped differently. I went with green and blue colors because they were two of the
main colors on the scanned image. I choose the title font because of its thickness and the ability
to still read it well. The text font was chooses for readability and the big contract between the title
typeface.
