Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.
ic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

I created the logo in Adobe Illustrator. I used dotted lines to create the circles
for the logo as well as the border. I chose fonts that had plenty of contrast. One
is an all caps serif font and the other is a script font. The colors are pulled from a
Design Seeds color scheme. Once the logo was created, I opened up a 2-page
document in Adobe InDesign. There I created the text for the name and business
information. I repeated the logo on the letterhead and again on the business
card. I also repeated the dotted border to tie the design together. I took the
medium blue color from the dots and found the lightest hue of that blue and
made that the background for the business card.

Event Ad
Description:

A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word

and a scanner.

Date:
1/29/16

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 15 | Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools:

Microsoft Word | HP Officejet 6500 Scanner | PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

Create a full-bleed design
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:

I scanned the image of the lady practicing yoga. I added the box of blue to the
right to mimic the blues from the sky and mountains, and also to keep the feel of
the ad calm. I chose white for the text because of the high contrast against the
blue. I kept the fonts clean and simple. There is a lot of white space in the photo
as well as in the blue box on the right. I used an Oldstyle font for the name of the
retreat and I used a clean sans serif font for the rest of the text.

Brochure
Description:

A two sided (duplex), tri-fold, offset, full-bleed brochure.

Date:
3/26/16

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 15 | Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools:

Adobe InDesign | Adobe Illustrator | Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

I created the brochure design and layout in Adobe InDesign. I split the layout into
three sections. The front of the brochure is an offset fold, so when its folded and
closed, the soccer ball on the grass image continues on the page beneath it.
For the large soccer ball in the inside of the brochure, I used the quick selection
tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove the background of the image. I used the refine
mask dialogue box to smooth, feather, and shift the edge to make a softer image
that doesnt look so stark and cutout against the brochures background. I then
placed the image of the soccer ball into InDesign where I used the text wrap
option to wrap the text in the center around the alpha channel of the image.
I created the original logo for BenD United Soccer. I designed the logo in Adobe
Illustrator. I used a live trace to create the black parts of the soccer ball. I used the
pen tool to draw the shield.

Photo Design
Description:

A personally taken photograph that has been edited/formatted using Photoshop.

Date:
2/3/16

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 15 | Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools:

Nikon D90 Camera | Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of an image. ge.

Process:

I took a picture with my Nikon D90 camera. I metered the sky and took the
photo to capture the blue. I made focal point of the water converging along the
bottom and right third of the image. I uploaded the photo into Photoshop and
edited it using levels, sharpness, selective color, and vibrance. I used Photoshop
to design the decorative chevron banners and the typography elements.

Logo
Description:

Three logo variations for the same company.

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 15 | Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.

Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

I created this logo for Winterwood, an acoustic music band. The entire logo
is created in Adobe Illustrator. I used the os and the d to serve double duty
as both the letters in the band name as well as the tuner keys on the top of
the guitar neck. I chose a mahogany, brick color for the guitar neck and then
worked in a triadic color scheme to pull the whole design together. You can see
what the logo looks like in full color, greyscale, and as a negative space against
a color background.

Web Page
Description:

A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Date:
3/9/16

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 15 | Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools:

Notepad++ | Adobe Photoshop | www.W3.org HTML validator

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how
it appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

I created this web page using Notepad++. I manipulated HTML and CSS code to
create this design to showcase my logo. I also used the http://www.W3.org HTML
validator to check all of my HTML and my CSS to make sure everything validated.
After I wrote my content and inserted my image, I attached a pre-made CSS
document to my HTML. I pulled colors from my logo to coordinate my webpage
to the colors in the logo. I pulled up my logo in Photoshop and found the
coordinating HEX colors using the eyedropper tool. Then I used those colors in
my CSS. I also changed my fonts to Arial Black and Palatino Linotype. I declared
a back up font just in case the viewers browser didnt have these exact fonts.
I added padding around the logo to give it ample white space and breathing
room and to make it the focal point of the page. I also added padding to the
text to set them apart from the edge of the webpage.

Photo Montage
Description:

An inspirational montage made by the blending of three images, and the

use of typography.

Date:
2/9/16

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 15 | Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I cropped the image of the stormy ocean. I used the lasso in Photoshop to pull
the rainbow from another image into this one. I used a mask and a 100% opacity
brush to soften the edges of the rainbow. I used a 30% opacity brush to soften the
whole thing and blend it into the stormy ocean. I found an image of falling rain
and layered that over the ocean image. I used a blending mode and reduced
the opacity to make the raindrops really subtle. I added in the typography by
grabbing the purple color from the water and finding contrasting fonts that work
well to convey the quote. I positioned the white copy so it forms a very subtle
continuation of the rainbow shape to further emphasize the design. I added the
border and erased part of the edges to allow the key words in the quote
to break through.

Flyer
Description:

Black & White promotional flyer to promote a graduate leadership conference.

Date:

Course/Instructor:

COMM 130 15 | Sara Tranberg

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links
intact.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links it.

Process:

I started out with four sketches for ideas. I liked the one with the square elements,
so I recreated my sketch in InDesign. I used strong contrast to create the title by
putting a bold text against a black background. I used alignment throughout
the entire design. Every element aligns with something else. I used Photoshop to
mask the image. By doing so, I created a strong sense of white space. The small
squares are repeating elements and they are following the rule of odds because
they are always in sets of three.
