Americawontherevolutionarywar,andthewinnerstendtorewritehistoryfortheirown
benefit,LukeandIarguedthattheBritishwerehadeveryrightintheiractionstowardsthe
coloniesandthecolonistswerentjustifiedintheAmericanrevolution.Weusedaprimarily
logicbasedargumentwithcarefullyselectedfactsanddetailstosupportourposition.
OnestrategyIusedwasomissioncombinedwithEthos.Forexample,oneofour
transitionshighlightsthatBritishcitizensinBritainwerepaying35.8timesasmuchintaxesas
thecolonistsinPennsylvaniawhiletrue,theaverageforallthecolonieswasthatBritainswere
payingcloserto10timesmore,not35.(13colonies)Thiswasdirectlyfollowinganinterview
whereitwassaidthattheBritishwereunfairlytaxingtheAmericans.Thisofcourseattackedthe
Ethosoftheintervieweeandguidedtheaudiencesopiniontowardsourpurpose.Similarly,we
utilizedtheAmerican,French,&Spanishcasualties,andonlyusedBritishdeaths,notincluding
casualtiesorGermandeaths.ThiswasusedtopumpupthetheEthosofBenedictArnoldand
downplaytheEthosoftheotherinterviewees.Bymanipulatingtruthstopresentfactsinsucha
waythatwerestilltrue,butdeceptiveintheirsupportforourposition,Ibelievewecreateda
muchmoreconvincingargument.
Thehistoricalcontextisthatthisdocumentarytakesplaceduringthemiddlepartofthe
revolutionarywar.AtapointwhereBenedictArnoldhasswitchedsidesbutsupportisgrowing
fortherevolutionarycause.(Holmes)ThedocumentariansarefromBritainandseetheopinions

oftheAmericansasajoke.Assuchtheyaregoingtodoeverythingintheirpowertodownplay
theAmericanreasoningforthiswar.WhilealsoomittinganyvalidreasontheAmericansmight
give.Theyareattemptingtogathersupportfortheirkingastheirintendedaudiencearethe
upperclassmenofGreatBritain.
Byadoptinganontraditionalviewforourargument,Iwasabletobetterunderstandthe
revolutionandtheinfluencesonbothsidesofitthatimpactedthecourseofAmerica,andworld,
history.Ironically,takingtheperspectiveoftheBritishandresearchingtheirsidehasconvinced
methatthedifferencesbetweentheAmericansandBritishwerestrongenoughtojustify
Americanindependence.ByarguingtheoppositepointIhavestrengthenedmyownviewsof
historyanddevelopedastrongerunderstandingoftherevolution.Whilegettingaunderstanding
ofotherculturesandviewpoints.OneimprovementthatIbelieveneedstobemadeissettinga
standardforthetechnologypeopleuse.Ittookmewelloveranhourjusttoopenavideofrom
oneofmygroupmembers.
