Procedures (45 minutes total)

1. ( 3 min.) At the conclusion of the proceeding lesson students will be handed a couple of
hand outs, a laminated scale card and a plastic baggie of plastic chips to place aside.
Students will also pull out their kazoos, and put them to the side untouched until it is time
to use them.
2. ( 5 min.) Students will listen as the teacher explains what melody and scale is (using the
board too).
3. ( 3 min.) Students will name off instruments that play melody, in a discussion.
4. ( 3 min.) Teacher will talk about the scale and treble clef, showing students on the board.
Students will also have a scale handout to look at.
5. ( 5 min.) Students will then take out the laminated cards and plastic chips they were
given and create a scale. Then they will add in patterns: Up, Down, Skip, Step, & Repeat.
The teacher will go around the class and make sure everyone understands this concept.
6. ( 10 min.) Students will gather in groups around the class room and each be given a
boomwhacker. They will then, as groups, arrange the scale by listening to the sound the
instruments make. Then the teacher will correct them, if needed. Then students will play
the scale up and then down. After that the groups will have to add in skip, step, and
repeat. After that students will pick a simple and short song to put together onm their
boomwhackers to play.
7. ( 2 min.) Students will put away the boomwhackers and sit down in their seat and take
out their kazoo.
8. ( 4 min.) Students will be instructed to play ABC, TWINKLE TWINKLE, & BA BA
BLACK SHEEP on their kazoos. Then will talk about how through the melody we can
hear the tune, and how in this case the tune was the same, through the songs are different.
9. ( 3 min.) The teacher will introduce Solfege and students will pull out their handout to
look at the hand positions as well. The teacher will guide them through each hand
movement. Students will sing along as they are guided through Solfege.
10. ( 5 min.) Students will then watch a clip from the sound of music, noting the scale.
11. ( 2 min) Students will put away their musical work and kazoos then return to their seats
in preparation for the next lesson.

Evaluation:

Students will be evaluated through a participation and discussion of the lesson.

Modifications and Extensions:
