"Adolescence and Parental Influence." Psychology Today. Sussex Publishers, LLC, 20 Sept.
2010. Web. 24 Mar. 2016.
This blog post goes in-depth about how parental influence can affect young
children and adolescents. It also elaborates on how they look up to the
parents and how the different actions affect the kids, not just what the
parents are saying. The author gives good points on how exactly parents do
these things---parents not only (blank), but they also (blank). It helps that the
author also has a Ph.D. in child development, so we know that the source is
credible.
Canter, Michael, prod. "Parental Control." Parental Control. MTV. Los Angeles, California, 6
Sept. 2005. Television.
The parents do not like their child's boyfriend or girlfriend, so out of a panel of potential suitors,
they choose two. Their son or daughter has to go on dates with both suitors chosen while to old
boyfriend or girlfriend watches the entire thing with the parents. In the end, the son or daughter
has to pick either one of the new choices or their old boyfriend or girlfriend. This show is
basically about parents trying to control who their son or daughter is in a relationship with.
Usually the old girlfriend or boyfriend is not a good influence on the son or daughter.
Aseltine, Robert H.. A Reconsideration of Parental and Peer Influences on Adolescent
Deviance. Journal of Health and Social Behavior 36.2 (1995): 103121. Web. 22
February 2016.
This article is relevant to my topic because it discusses the influence that not only parents, but
also friends and peers, have on adolescent behavior. The main influence on adolescent behavior,
according to the article A Reconsideration of Parental and Peer Influences on Adolescent
Deviance, is actually the friends of the adolescent and not the parent. Parental attachment and
supervision do not strongly correlate to drug use and bad behavior. This article was published in
1995, but is still very relevant in 2016. There has long been debate on who has more influence
over a teenager, the teenagers parents or the teenagers friends, and this article seems to finally
settle that debate. One of the main strengths of this article is the fact that it has many studies
listed from various years ranging from 1947 to 1960 to 1964 to 1968 to 1976 to 1979 which

show that the reason for delinquent behavior stays the same over the years and through
generations. The main weakness of the article is that I have access to only a brief portion of it
and I would have to pay to see the full article. I believe this piece would stand up very well to a
strong critical evaluation from an academic standpoint due to how the writer uses fact to support
his arguments, not just opinion. I am hoping to use this source as a building block to prove that
although friends have more influence on bad behavior than parents, a parents negative influence
could lead their child to pick bad friends.
Eisenberg, Nancy, Amanda Cumberland, and Tracy L. Spinrad. Parental Socialization of
Emotion.Psychological Inquiry 9.4 (1998): 241273. Web. 22 February 2016.
This article is relevant to my topic because it discusses the socialization of emotion.
Socialization as used in the article, Parental Socialization of Emotion, means that children
inherit and get used to the negative and positive ideas given to them by their parents. This article
shows that there is a correlation between parental reactions to childrens emotions and childrens
emotional reactions, low social skills and self-esteem due to the negative reactions of parents.
This article was published in 1998, but I believe that it is still a valuable piece to use in a
research paper in the year 2016. The topic of how parents influence teenagers has been discussed
throughout history and is something that isnt new; however, this article notes that the issue of
physiological influence is actually more serious than we think. This articles strength is how it
compares negative responses from parents to its effect on children socially and mentally. A
weakness is that it I do not have full access to the article, to my knowledge. This may change
once I access this site on a school computer, but so far I only have access to a section. By reading
the abstract and the section I am able to see, I am hoping that I can read more because I feel like
this article would be a huge asset to my research. Statistical standpoints would attribute to my

paper greatly because numbers and facts from other peoples research would show how big of an
issue this really is.
Howell, Frank M., and Wolfgang Frese. Adult Role Transitions, Parental Influence, and Status
Aspirations Early in the Life Course. Journal of Marriage and Family 44.1 (1982): 35
49. Web. 22 February 2016.
This article is relevant to my topic because it talks about the immediate consequences of
parenting, teenage marriage, and dropping-out of school. The article comes from the Journal of
Marriage and Family. The article was published in 1982, making it a little less relevant to the
topics it tackles in 2016, but is still important to show that the issues were still the same in that
year. According to the article Adult Role Transitions, Parental Influence, and Status Aspirations
Early in the Life Course, dropping-out is the most likely result of an early adult role transition.
One of the major strengths of the article is that it very directly tackles the problem of parental
influence on adolescents and how quickly that influence causes them to transition to an adult
role. It also uses a scientific study and facts to back up its arguments. The major weakness of the
article is the date of its publication, making it less relevant for todays audience. I believe that the
article would do very well on its own against a strong academic criticism due to the science
behind it. This source will be entered into my essay to prove that parents do have a major
influence on their childrens academic success. If the parent has a negative influence, then the
child will be forced into an adult role early and, as the article points out, their academic
aspirations spiral downward, leading them to drop-out. Therefore I can assume that if the parent
has a positive influence on their child then the academic aspirations will not suffer and might
increase.

Murray, Joseph, and David P. Farrington. The Effects of Parental Imprisonment on Children.
Crime and Justice 37.1 (2008): 133206. Web. 22 February 2016.
This article is relevant to my topic because it discusses the negative effects that a parent being
imprisoned can have on their child or children. The article, The Effects of Parental
Imprisonment on Children, was published in 2008, making it extremely relevant. The authors,
Joseph Murray and David P. Farrignton, are very credible due to their degrees in the fields of
Criminology. The article states that the number of children with imprisoned parents is increasing
in the west, and talks about all the risks a child faces while having an imprisoned parent, such as
antisocial behavior, offending, mental health problems, drug abuse, school failure, and
unemployment. A major strength of the article is the authors, as both are very credible in their
field. Another strength of the article is the fact that it was published in 2008. A weakness of the
article is the lack of data and concrete evidence, as it cannot prove a correlation between the risks
listed and a parent being imprisoned. I believe that this article could stand up well to an academic
critique based on the credibility of the writers. I plan on using this article in my essay to show
how the imprisonment of the parent has a major, dangerous influence on a child or children. The
article attempts to point out that crime runs in families, so if a parent or both parents are
imprisoned then there is a greater chance for the child to be influenced negatively by this and
also turn to a life of crime.
Smith, Thomas Ewin. Adolescent Reactions to Attempted Parental Control and Influence
Techniques. Journal of Marriage and Family 45.3 (1983): 533542. Web. 22 February
2016.
This article is relevant to my topic because it discusses what kind of effect a parents control and
methods have on the behavioral compliance of the youth. The article, Adolescent Reactions to

Attempted Parental Control and Influence Techniques was published in 1983. The articles
purpose was to find out how much control parents should exert over their child or children to get
the optimal level of obedience, and also to find out which methods worked best for obedience.
One of the main strengths of the article is the fact that it uses scientific studies as data. The major
weakness of the article is the year it was published, making it less relevant today as times have
changed and control and influence techniques have changed. The article would stand strongly
against a strong critique from an academic standpoint due to the evidence used from studies. I
will use this article in my essay to show how the differing control and influence techniques effect
the adolescents behavior. While too little control and influence lead to undesirable behavior,
complete control should also not be exerted by the parents. For an optimal behavioral response,
parents should find the balance between too much control and influence and too little.
