Your neighbors son came home from school

today with the following homework problem:

-3|-2x3|

Your neighbors son is convinced that the

answer has to be positive because it is an
absolute value problem. Is he right? Write
1-2 paragraphs explain how you might teach
him about the rules of absolute value and/or
multiplying integers.

Balance this equation by writing another

equation on the right side that uses at
least 1 absolute value.

About Signed Numbers

7

In algebra, you learn that you can add and subtract

negative numbers. To avoid confusion, a signed
number may be enclosed in ( ) parentheses, but
they arent always.
A positive sign indicates either addition or a
positive number. A negative sign indicates either
subtraction or a negative number.
Simplified Way of

Sum or Difference

Meaning

+5 + (+6)

Positive 5 plus positive 6

5+6

+3 - (-4)

Positive 3 minus
negative 4

3 - (-4)

-2 + (-3)

Negative 2 plus negative

3

-2 + (-3)

Writing

Using the number line you can visualize

how to solve the problem. Start with the
first number and move either right or left
depending on the sign that follows.
-1 + (-4) =

-6 + 5 =

4 -10 =

2nd: Learning the Rules

10

Now that you can see how it works

both using integer tiles and the
number line, lets learn some rules
to help you quickly be able to solve
integer equations.

The words for this song are written on a slide
#20 so you can copy them down later.
The sign of the larger number is
positive so the answer is positive.

Changing Signs
11

In order for the song to work each number can only have one sign in front of it.
If there are two signs in front of a number then use the following rule to replace
the two signs with one sign. (click the video below to see/hear it in action.)

Same signs add, different signs subtract.

Rules
++=+
- -=+
-+=+-=-

Examples
6 + (-3)
- 5 + +6
- 2 +2
+ 7 (-4)

63=3
-5+6=1
-22=-4
7 + 4 = 11

Subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive:

Variable: A letter that stands for a number.

Coefficient: A number that multiplies a variable. In the

term 3y, 3 is the coefficient.

Variable with no coefficient: If there is a variable without

a coefficient, the coefficient is always +1. (example: 1z is
written as z).

Term: Algebraic expressions are made up of one or more

terms. Each term is a number, a variable or a coefficient
with a variable. (examples: 3x, 4n2, 2xy, z, and 9).

Like Terms: are groups of two or more terms that have the
same variables and exponents. 4 and 7 are like terms
(without a variable); 2r and 5r are like terms, with a
variable, and so are 3x2 and -7x2 .

Ordering Like Terms: terms should first be put in
