Brainstorming Session Lesson

Brainstorming Session to create a Group Occupational Report

Name of Instructor: Jeffrey A. Meck
Program Title: Computer Service Technology
Course Title: Computer Service Technology
Unit Title: Professionalism in the workplace
Lesson Title: Brainstorming session
Lesson Objectives: The lesson is a Brainstorming Session to create a Group Occupational Report.
The objective is to have a brainstorming session in which we develop a group report of the
Occupations in Computers and Networking the students researched. The goals of the
brainstorming lesson are twofold. On the surface, it to glean the best information from the
students previous research on occupations and produce a master document from their selections.
The not so obvious, primary goal is to get the students to learn how to confidently share
knowledge in a group setting, as well as learn to listen, receive and organize information from
others students.
Time (length of lesson): 45 min, 20 min sharing and student commentary brainstorming and 10
min. assessment of the students absorption of the content and the students reactions to the
brainstorming group session.
Equipment and Materials needed: Instructor guide, student research in digital format, upload
fileserver and feedback forms.
Academic Standard(s) and Anchor(s) and/or Common Core Standard addressed by this lesson:
PA Core Standards 13.3.11 C. Evaluate conflict resolution skills as they relate to the workplace:
Group dynamics, Managing/leadership, Mediation, Negotiation, Problem solving.
PA Core Standards 13.3.11 B. Evaluate team member roles to describe and illustrate active

Technical Standard(s) or Competencies taught in this lesson:
POS 15.1202. 1003, Utilize the team approach to deliver customer service.
Introduction: This lesson is a brainstorming educational group meeting in which they will
create a list of everyones best ideas from a round-robin discussion. The idea is to become
familiar with the brainstorming strategy. The goal is to obtain their input on the ideas on the
Occupational Research reports they completed previously. The session will be successful if the
student takes ownership in the execution of the brainstorming meeting.
Body:
The strategy is that we can learn from knowledge and ideas shared by students in a group
brainstorming meeting. The instructor will explain the additional benefits of exposing the
student to public speaking, listening skills, and sharing the new ideas that occur on the spur of the
moment. It will be explained that this will be practicing skills in a safe environment so they will
be prepared for their future work and business experiences.
The instructor will introduce the structure of a Brainstorming group session, the group leader and
Recorder of information. The instructor will explain the parameters and turn over the meeting to
the group leader.

Then they will get to share and discuss their ideas three occupations they researched.
We will break the class into our groups previously selected by the instructor.
Each group will let the leader control who speaks and for how long in a round-robin
brainstorming discussion. Everyone shares one idea (or all 3 if time allows) from the
information you found out in a previous research assignment about the topic of
Occupations and Careers in the IT (Computer and Network) field.
Share your first choice and why you chose it, but do not repeat an item unless each of
your other ideas has been already used. Before the meeting, you formatted your material
into a common bullet format (shown in that assignments rubric).
You are asked to be polite, listen and remain quiet while someone else is speaking
The leader will also keep the questioning and comments orderly by assigning turns for
the students who raise them. The amount of time each member will have will be
determined by dividing the time available by the number of students sharing.
The recorder will list the first occupational choice, the name of the contributor and
collect digital copies of their prepared research information. The original research
document will be uploaded to the classroom fileserver. After the meeting the recorder
will cut and paste these into a single list to be distributed to the members of your group
and each of the other groups.
The students will fill out a feedback form noting their choice of one other persons idea,
why it interests you personally and things you learned. There will also be questions for
the students about the brainstorming session to evaluate the success of the teaching
method and its design.
Summary: The lesson will use the brainstorming method, The students will discuss the
occupational choices described in the meeting and ask the person sharing questions they have.
Finally the class will fill out a feedback form.
Evaluation/Student Assessment: Attached are the students feedback assessment form to be
completed at the end of this lesson plan.
This will be few questions to evaluate absorption of the content and their thoughts of the
effectiveness of the brainstorming strategy. One of the assessments used for the teaching strategy
will be done by observing and taking notes of the students sharing and the groups interaction.
