Venture Heights School Wireless Technology Use

A safe and secure wireless network at Venture Heights will provide students with new options for using technology at
school. In addition to using school devices on the wireless network, students will be able to use personal devices such as
cell phones, laptops, tablets, and iPads to access the internet.
Personal devices will be subject to the same protocols as school based devices. In order to ensure safe use of personal
devices while on the school wireless network, students must log on to the school system with their school-assigned
usernames and passwords. This will mean that personal devices will be secured by the school division Barracuda Firewall
protection as well as tracked and monitored for appropriate use.
While using the wireless system with personal devices, students continue to be subject to the Prairie Spirit School
Division Network/Internet Acceptability Use Permission Form that is signed by students and parents. A copy of this form
is located on the school website.
Additional school expectations regarding student use of personal devices at Venture Heights School include the
following:
1. During classroom use, sharing of personal technology can take place only with specific permission of the device
owner. This is supported by teachers.
2. The school or school division does not assume responsibility for care of student personal devices or responsibility for
damage or loss of these devices.
3. Internet access can take place only with permission of the teacher and only during class time.
4. During non-structured times such as recess, before school, and after school, the wireless network will be turned off.
Consequently, during these times, student use of personal devices will be through their own personal data plans and
subject to school appropriate use guidelines.
5. In addition to the division acceptable use guidelines, Venture Heights School emphasizes that the division Harassment
Policy, specifically cyber bullying, pertains during school use of personal devices. Additionally, use of student or staff
images can only take place for purposes agreed to by the teacher and only with permission from the subject of the
image.
