Hospital hits 50

By Jessica Howard

Its been half a century since Ballan

Hospital opened its doors.
The establishment began as a small bushnursing hospital in the 1960s and has since
evolved into a $14-million business.
However the story began way back in 1944,
when two sisters, Jane Rhodes and Jean
Rylan, created a fundraising campaign in
the hope of establishing a hospital in their
town. The idea came after the death of Mrs

Rhodes son Norman, who lost his life in

action in New Guinea.
The provisional committee worked
tirelessly to raise the funds, yet despite
their enthusiasm, it was 22 years before the
hospital officially opened.
The first patient was admitted on July 21
1966 and four months later the hospital
welcomed the arrival of its very first
newborn baby.
Fifty years later, Ballan and District Health
and Care employ 170 staff members and

The country practise offers everything
from general patient enquires to palliative
care and everything in between.
CEO Wayne Weaire said he was honoured
to celebrate the half-century feat, which he
believed was a fantastic representation of
the Ballan community.
This hospital is a sign of what can be
achieved when a community really works
together. With an initial donation of 1,300
and a lot of hard work, the doors finally

Through the help of this town we have
funded the Aged Care Hostel and of
course, the more recent GP Super Clinic.
It continues to be a wonderful story of
community partnership and we have
grown to become one of the absolute top
models of rural and community health
care in Victoria. We have people all over
the state coming to see how we operate.

juicy strawberry forest during a pick-your-own twilight
market at the farm earlier
this month.

By Jessica Howard
Fruits of Life have taken a
fresh approach to growing
strawberries.

Daughter, Tanya Mauff said

there wasnt a single strawberry left.

The Bacchus Marsh farm

have created a vertical strawberry forest that is pram and
wheelchair accessible, easy
on the back and synthetic
chemical free.

We had three registers going and despite selling out of

everything, we were pretty
much ready for the next
event just three days later.
Its obviously very weather
dependent but they do grow
back very quickly, she said.

The innovative forest is

home to 3,800 PVC-pipes
with 24 strawberry plants in
each.
Farm-owner, Sam Dellios
said it was five long years
of trial and error before the
farm was near perfect.

We tried different techniques to find the friendliest

way for the whole family,
and rather than the conventional way of growing, this
offers the opportunity for
everyone to be able to pick
[strawberries], he said.
Its still not perfect, there
could always be improvements; but this way of growing is more sustainable and
offers a lot more opportunity. There are 91,000 strawberry plants here; thats

Its been a very long process to get here, but everyone seems to just absolutely
love it. Any age group can
come; the grandmas and
grandpas can walk through
without having to bend
down to pick, and we have
provided a big enough aisle
space so that it is pram and
wheelchair accessible.

around two-thirds more
than that of conventional
growing, despite the area
being the same.
A drip-feed watering sys-

tem, which Mr Dellios created himself, runs along the

top of each row of pipes and
trickles down throughout
each plant.

It was probably the hardest

part of the vertical harvest to
create, Mr Dellios said.

On cool days we would go

through around 10,000 litres

of water a day which is actually very conservative. On

a hot day it would be around
20,000 litres.
The community enjoyed the

Just golden on the plains

By Jessica Howard
If there were a music festival youd raise your boot to
it would certainly be Golden
Plains.
The boutique event celebrates music in all its forms
and offers an experience unlike any other. The diverse
line-up paired with frontstage couches, a natural
amphitheatre, the freedom
of BYO and a giant pink flamingo has quickly solidified
its reputation as being one
of the best music festivals in
the country.
This year marked the 10th
anniversary
of
Golden
Plains, which was born
17-years after its sister festival, Meredith. The popular
three-day events were created by Chris Nolan on his
family farm, with the first
gathering host to just 250
people.
Golden Plains now welcomes 8,000 punters each
year, with tickets selling out
within minutes through an
in-demand ballot system.
Although smaller and more
relaxed than that of its sister
festival, Golden Plains offers

the same quirky pleasures;

from the round of applause
when the sun sets at Inspiration Point to the raising of a
boot to mark the crowds appreciation for an artist.
This years line-up welcomed the likes of Violent
Femmes, C.W. Stoneking,
NO ZU, Royal Headache,
Freddie Gibbs, Tyrannamen,
Gold Class and headliners
Eddy Current Suppression
Ring, who graced the stage
for the first Golden Plains
in 2007. The headline slot
was the also the Melbourne
bands first performance in
six years.
Bass player, Brad Raymond
Barry (aka Rob Solid) said
it still felt like a surreal
dream.
Playing the first [Golden
Plains] was an honour in itself, then to be asked to play
the number ten is beyond
words, he said.
I wasnt event sure if wed
play another show ever, then
we got offered Golden Plains
and everyone was into it, it
blows me away. Jams leading
up to the gig were really fun
and songs fell back together
really quickly so it all felt

right.
Bacchus Marsh resident
Sam Reale, who attended
the Meredith amphitheatre
for the fourth time, said the
festival was one of the only
events that embodied what
music festivals were traditionally about.
Music festivals are important culturally and I think
Golden Plains seems to be
the only festival that genuinely cares about that aspect
of it, he said.
The best part about the
festival is the freedom to do
what makes you happy for
three days.
Reale said the highlight of
this years festival was seeing American punk rock
band, Violent Femmes.
Seeing 8,000 people go
clap clap clap clap to Blister in the Sun was hilarious. Tip of the hat to Golden
Plains for their scheduling
prowess.
Golden Plains Festival is
held over three days during
the Victorian Labour Day
long-weekend. For more information visit www.aunty.

Millrose Quilting and Gallery
sported even more colour than
usual last month when internationally renowned textile
designer Kaffe Fassett came to
town.
The San Francisco-born artist
is well known for his extravagant patterns and intricate
designs, and demonstrates his
talent to quilt makers all over
the world.
Kaffe visited Ballan over two
days from February 26, where
he held lectures in front of
close to 200 quilt enthusiasts at
the Ballan council chambers,
before heading to the Millrose
Gallery for champagne, nibbles and a book signing.

Colourful Kaffe

Millrose Quilting and Gallery owner Sue Bartleman said

the participants, who came
from all over Victoria, wore a
rainbow of clothes to welcome
Kaffe to the town.
It was such a beautiful day
and everyone walked from the
council chambers down to the
gallery, so you saw this stream
of very colourful people, it was
gorgeous, she said.
During his lecture Kaffe told
the story of a knitting mill he
went to in Scotland, which
he left with all these different
coloured wools. He was sitting
on the train opposite this lady
and he said you need to teach
me how to knit before I get
home, and basically in 20 minutes she did. So that was in the

early stages and a few years

down the track he started doing the patchwork fabrics.
Ms Bartleman said Kaffe was
a household name for anyone
interested in quilting, so it was
no surprise that the lectures
had sold out within days.
We actually didnt even really have a chance to advertise
ourselves, this little mention
was put on their website and
straight away we had people
ringing us to book in. He has
such a following and a lot of
people have been using his
patterns and fabrics for years,
she said.
It was a real honour to have
someone of that calibre come
here, and for us it meant that
a lot of people that perhaps

had never been here before

could visit for the first time,
which gives us a lot of good
exposure.
Weve had really great feedback too, a lot of people have
been emailing us saying how
much they enjoyed the lectures and actually having the
chance to meet him. Everyone
really enjoyed how generous
and humorous Kaffe is.

Farmer Fury
By Jessica Howard

A 3.5 per cent rate increase could mean Moorabool

Shire farmers are forced to sell up.
Local farmer Chris Sharkey spoke to Steve Martin
on ABC Radio Ballarat last week, stating that the
increase in rates was becoming unsustainable.
We cant handle it, he said.
As a business, and we do run it as a business now
its not just a lifestyle, Ive put a limit on how many
years we can last until it affects us too much and then
that will be it, we will probably have to sell.
Mr Sharkey said the rate variation was just another
increase on business costs that had been going on
for far too long.
Particularly in the position where we are, we are in
a reasonably low rainfall area and the years havent
been too good to us the last few and we cant afford
it for much longer. We pay $30,000 in rates, thats
just for our business, and its just dad and I, we dont
employ anyone else. Its lean and mean and it is just
us on the plains.
The problem is that everyone knows that it is a
problem and a lot of people have tried, but you get
the run around. If you go and complain about your
rates they tell you to put in a valuation objection in,
so you do that and you go through that process, and
then that is pretty much it, thats about as far as you
can get.
Mr Sharkey said with the help from Cr. Paul Tatchell
they have progressed a bit further than most.
It is only that we pushed a bit harder and managed to
get Paul on board to give us a bit of a hand and help
us a little bit, but we have now come to a grinding
halt.

RATE CAPPING

Council to submit their option

By Jessica Howard

Ratepayers in the Moorabool Shire

may see a 3.5 per cent rate increase as
Council submits an application to the
Essential Service Commission.
A special meeting of council held on
Wednesday March 23 saw councillors
vote on whether to accept the state
governments 2.5 per cent rate cap,
adopt a 4.15 per cent increase or a 3.5
per cent rate increase.
Deputy Mayor Paul Tatchell put
up a motion of zero per cent and to
not proceed with an application to
the ESC, which was seconded by
councillor Dudzik however voted
against by Councillors Spain, Toohey,
Sullivan and Edwards.
Alternate motions were then put
forward by Cr Dudzik, who asked for
a 2.5 per cent rate cap, and Cr Spain,
who asked for a 4.15 per cent rate
increase.
All alternate motions were lost.
The meeting then proceeded to a vote
on the original recommendation: that
Council would submit an application
for a rate cap variation of 3.5 per cent (1
per cent above the cap) for the 2016/17
financial year.
The rate variation would be based
on the increase of other charges and
fees under a user-pays model to
be cost-reflective including indirect
costs. Examples of increased charges
may include water transfer station
charges, animal registrations, food
premises registrations and septic tank

Pattons Prayer
with Pastor Merv Patton

The Purpose of Pain

Everyone will experience pain
in their lifetime. Either physical
pain, mental, emotional or relational pain, no one is exempt.
Dr. Paul Brand was a medical missionary, who pioneered work with lepers in
India, and saw the suffering
that they went through. One
of the problems with leprosy
is that the leper can no longer
feel pain in the leprous parts
of his body, and Dr. Brand
talked about what a tragedy
that was. He said, If I had the
power to eliminate human pain,
I would not exercise that right.
Pains value is too great.
Pain protects. When a
healthy person has an injured leg, he develops a limp
that causes him not to put
weight down on it. A leper
will sometimes wear away
a wounded part of his body
because he feels no pain.
He might burn a cigarette
down until it burns his skin
and never feel it. He doesnt
have pain to protect him.

Thank God for pain. It tells

us something is wrong and
protects us from harm.
Every living person will experience emotional pain, at
some time or another. Sadly,
too many people have a
lifetime of mental and emotional pain. We live in a generation today that feels pain,
but rather than trying to get
the pain settled, we seek a
sedative.
Thats one reason many are
on drugs. Thats why some
people look to alcohol or
gambling or get involved in
an affair. But as much as we
try to avoid it, we need the
pain to tell us there is an infection or a sickness that has
to be dealt with.
Victor Frankel was sent to
a concentration camp and
clung on to hope by finding
significance in his suffering;
saving countless lives by
helping others do the same.
Mother Teresa was born

in Albania, and as a young

Nun she was sent to Calcutta where she found her
purpose in easing the pain
of the local people. Every
day Mother Teresa was
confronted with suffering,
which undoubtedly was
painful to her, as she fed,
clothed, taught and counselled people.
It would seem that every
hero inevitably comes to a
moment of crisis, either before or during their struggles, when it seems that all
will be lost. Nobody who
looks at a high achiever can
ever know the pain that
person has gone through on
their lifes journey.
All poets, song writers, politicians, teachers and artists
can pay tribute to loneliness,
and to times of silence. On
Jesus first excursion after
being baptized by John, he
was led into the wilderness
for 40 days, where he encountered deep loneliness,

hunger, scorching heat and

the battle to stay alive. At
his weakest moment, Satan
whispered his temptations
into the ear of the God Man.
Jesus held onto the word
of God as he replied, It is
written
Something significant happens to us when we are
void of what we depend on.
There is significant purpose
and promise in your pain.
It is too easy to become embittered because of pain,
loneliness and rejection,
but if we can find purpose
in our pain, we can become
an answer to someone elses
problem. The pain you are
experiencing now might be
your lifes purpose later.
Remember that pain is important because it tells us
that something is wrong.
If we didnt feel pain, we
wouldnt know we were
sick, and we wouldnt seek
an answer.

Harmony in the classroom

Students at Darley Primary School were excused for being out of uniform last Monday 21 March.
The school held an assembly in their gymnasium to celebrate Harmony Day. This saw students dressed in costumes
that represented different cultures and diversity within Moorabool and Australia.
African drummers were part of the celebration with their colourful costumes and musical instruments.

Fatal

VicRoads has confirmed that it is investigating road safety
improvements for the notoriously dangerous Geelong/
Bacchus Marsh Road.
East Ward Councillor Tonia Dudzik raised the issue at the
March council meeting, saying that a delegation of concerned
residents had approached her over the issue.
VicRoads Regional Director Ewen Nevett said the safety
of drivers on its roads is VicRoads highest priority as the
organisation works to increase the safety and travelling
experience of all road users.
While we havent had formal discussions with Moorabool
Shire Council, we are aware of the communitys concern
about the Geelong/Bacchus Marsh Road, he said.
We are currently investigating a number of potential road
safety improvements that will be considered for future
funding programs.
The Geelong/Bacchus Marsh Road has a 100km/h speed
limit and has seen an increase in average daily traffic over
the past five years, increasing by 100 vehicles to 5,800.
In the same five-year period to July 2015, there were 13
crashes on the 4km stretch of road in Balliang East, including
two fatalities.

Councillor puts call out

for more women

By Jessica Howard

New statistics following the

celebration of International
Womens Day has revealed the
disappointing number of women in local government.
Whilst female councillors in
Ballarat and Melton account for
more than 40 per cent, Moorabool Shire and Hepburn Councils are part of ten local governments with just one female
councillor in each.
Federal Member for Ballarat,
Catherine King said it was
heartening to see Ballarat and
Melton doing so well in terms of
equal representation and with
council elections later this year,
now was the time for women
who might be interested in
council to consider standing.
While its important that organisations like councils and
governments adapt and become
workplaces that inspire great
contributions from all sectors
of society, including women,
I think we need to encourage
women to put their hand up in
the first place, she said.
Women need to know that
their experiences and perspectives are just as valid as any
other and that their contributions can make a real difference.
Whether in politics, business or
a host of other fields we all benefit from their input.
During the 2012 election, only
215 of the 631 councillors elected in Victoria were female - a
measly 34 per cent.
Moorabool Shire councillor
Tonia Dudzik recently spoke
to 3BA radio host Ed Cowlisha
on Ballarat Today, stating that
she believed women were not
always encouraged to run for

Council.
I dont think that we encourage them enough and I suppose that people look for role
models in the world and so if
half our council were women,
then women would think it was
normal for women to run for
council, but we dont actually
have that.
Mrs Dudzik, who is the first female councillor for Moorabool
in eight years, told Cowlisha she
looked at the previous all-male
council and thought, how can
these people represent me?
I was active on a number of
council issues before becoming
councillor and when I looked
at [the councillors] they were
all old men and there wasnt a
single woman. I thought, how
do they speak for women and
how do they speak for families
because they dont have the perspective that women have, she
said.
We need to start encouraging
women. Those who dont think
they should stand for council
need to look at the whole service of what council provides.
Council can deal with issues to
do with childcare, kindergarten, maternal and child health,
roads, the environment, libraries, garbage, sporting ovals and
parks and who doesnt what to
have a say in that? Do you not
want things to be better; do you
not want a better place for your
children?
So I would say to women, get
out there, stand up and run for
Council.
All Victorian councils will go
to election again in October
2016. For more information visit
https://www.vec.vic.gov.au.

Relocating to unfamiliar territory

Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV

Deciding to buy a new home and move to a new

location - is an exciting time in your life but that
decision is only the start of the journey.
For those already living in a regional area, and
looking to move to a new location within Victoria,
the new area is likely to require some adjustment,
in terms of work, schooling and general day-today living.
Similarly, those taking a tree change and
moving to regional Victoria from the city will find
life very different in the new location. For these
buyers, it might be a move to a town or village
known only from holidays.
Pre-purchase research before buying is always
very important, but all the more so when
purchasing a home in an all-new area. In the first
instance, talk to local agents, who will know the

best areas that are right for you and that will meet
your longer-term needs.

You can also view recent median house and unit

prices on the REIV website, which will provide a
further indication of areas that are most affordable,
or best fit your budget.
While price will influence your decision, there
are many other important considerations. These
may include being close to health and education
facilities, or adequate sporting facilities. Do
you want a rural or city feel or perhaps a
complete tree or sea-change? And, perhaps most
importantly, what are the local employment
opportunities like?
Its also worthwhile working out what are must
haves and what youre willing to compromise on.

After choosing your preferred location, it is

advisable to have a closer look first-hand. Visit the
area, and aim to talk to other residents and even
local business people.
Also, seek out library and community
noticeboards, read the local newspaper and its
website for local activities, community groups
and classes.

If you are considering a move to a rural area, check

the zoning there may be certain restrictions
about what you can do. The local council can be a
great source of information.
Gathering all this information will not only help
ensure you are buying into an area which offers
what you want; it will enable you to settle more
quickly into your new community.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

State Championships

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics had 10 athletes represent their Centre last weekend at the State
Track & Field Championships held at Casey Fields, Cranbourne. The Centre claimed 3 medals.
William Lalor won Gold in the Under 11 High Jump with a jump of 1.43 metres and Silver in
the Discus, throwing 30.26 metres. Training partner, Jarvis Miles also won silver in the Under
12 Discus with a best throw of 34.76 metres.

Three Consecutive
Premierships

Ballan Bowling Club

Jarvis Miles Discus Silver

William Lalor High Jump GOLD and Discus SILVER.

Ballan has become the first

club in history to win three
consecutive
Division
9
premierships after defeating
Beaufort Golf by 16-shots in
the grand final.
A challenging green, that
had significant rainfall on
it in the days leading up,
and the resilience of the
opposition made sure the
victors had to fight hard to
earn the title.
The three-peat was made
possible
after
turning
around an early three-shot
deficit at afternoon tea to run
out 75-59 winners.
A dominating 22-shot by
Alan Love and his team was

the standout performance

of the day to put the overall
result beyond doubt.
Its fantastic to clinch the
premiership after being the
standout side all season,
Love said.
Credit to all of our bowlers,
they played so well and
never took their eyes off the
prize.
Weve made history today
which is an added bonus and
I think well be celebrating
the efforts of winning this
title for a long time.
Paul McNaughtons team
trailed at one stage by 17-1
before staging a comeback of
epic proportions to only lose
by three-shots.
John Ellery also suffered
the same fate, going down
by three-shots in a contest
that wasnt decided until the
final end.
The club will now look
towards promotion into a
higher division in Ballarat
District Bowls Division
Weekend Pennant next
season.

Grand Finals
Ballan Tennis Club ended a
very successful 2015/16 season with five out of six junior
teams travelling to Buninyong to play in Grand Final
matches. All of the Ballan
teams were faced the challenge of playing the Number
One ranked teams in their
respective grades.
C Grade
C3 players Ben Conroy,
Jamie-Lee
Speakman,
Prathic Sundaram and Rachel Young won their first
premiership over a strong
Buninyong side.

The C4 team of Lauren
Bertoncello, Ethan Owens,
Manni Vincent and Zeb

in a nail-biter, the young Ballan team drew with Dunnstown forcing the match
into a sudden death play-off.
Dunnstown finally managed to overcome the gutsy
Ballan team. Dunnstown 2
(19-3) def Ballan 2 (19-0).
Ethan Owens received the
Most Consistent player
across the entire Association
for the C4 Grade.
C2 team players Guy
ASpeculo, Ethan Bertoncello, Ben Campey, Adam
Furlong and Luke Hallett

had a perfect start to the

day winning the first set 6-0,
however, struggled against a
strong Navigators team who
came back strongly from
that point to win on the day.

performers across the Association for the C4 Grade.
B Grade
The Ballan team of Joel Bertoncello, Lachlan Conlan,
Lachlan Furlong, Connor
McLeod and Owen Robertson found themselves up
against a strong Dunnstown
team. They fought hard all
day and were in the match
right up until mid-way
through the final two sets,
when Dunnstowns consistency finally won-out.
Dunnstown 4/30 def Ballan
