Martu Women Rangers Sharing Traditional Knowledge

By Zan King, Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ)

Last August, 42 Martu women and seven

non-Aboriginal staff came together for
a four-day plant and bush medicine
workshop. The women, most of who
work as rangers, came from three Martu
communities to meet at an important
place on Martu country called Yulpu, in
the Great Sandy Desert.
The workshop was a response to a request
from some younger Martu women who
had expressed their eagerness to bring
together senior Martu women in a forum
which would allow them an opportunity to
learn and practice this important traditional
knowledge.
The women rangers worked hard before
the event collecting seeds and medicine
plants to share at the workshop. Fiona
Walsh from CSIRO, an ethnobotanist
who has worked with Martu for over the
past 20 years facilitated the camp. Senior
women shared information about a variety
of plants and guided the younger women
through winnowing, yandying [separating
seed by shaking in a special shallow dish],
and grinding different types of seed.

Parnngurr School visited one afternoon

to participate in the intricate process of
making a traditional kalaru seed cake
[Samphire, Tecticornia arborea]. Nancy
Taylor, senior Parnngurr woman, and ranger
explained, We are working on making
kalaru seed cake and showing the kids so
that they can learn. The young generation
can learn for the future.
KJ sees cultural knowledge as part of its
vision to build and support strong and
sustainable Martu communities. KJs Senior
Cultural Advisor, Muuki Taylors message is
clear. When the old people are finished,
the young people must keep going, looking
after country. All the future generations
should be working to look after country.
KJs land management programmes are
funded by a mix
of Commonwealth
Working
on
Country,
State,
corporate, not-forprofit funding and
through the Martu
Living
Deserts
Project.

Bike Week

Bike Week has been held annually in

Western Australia for over 30 years
celebrating people on their bikes for
transport, sport and fitness, or just for
fun. The Shire of East Pilbara celebrated
Bike Week with the launch of their new
Recreation Map which outlines the shared
use bike/walk trail network and shows
the many sports and recreation facilities
in town. The community was invited to
join in the social ride allowing cyclists
the opportunity to chat and take in the
sights of Newman. Over 20 riders cycled
the 7 km ride followed by a free healthy
breakfast. Support was provided by St John
Ambulance with their vehicle and bicycle
crew. Accredited WestCycle Trainer, Richard
Wood instructed children aged from 4 to 10
years in the valuable safety lessons, on the
importance of wearing a helmet, and basic
road safety messages over two workshops.
Despite the heat, the kids enjoyed the
sessions and came away with a greater
understanding of how to ride a bike safely.

Volunteers Help Newman Visitor Centre

In response to an enquiry for assistance
in moving Stan Hilditchs truck featured in
the Newman Visitor Centre, Mike Manson
contacted them. With excitement, the wish
list of tasks grew.

The day also introduced some of the

volunteer crew to the visitor centres
offerings including an extensive retail
range and they had not heard of the
accommodation available.

For six hours on a hot March day, BHP

Billiton Iron Ores Mt Whaleback Dewatering B-Crew, all Newman residents,
dedicated themselves to helping the
Newman Visitor Centre. They not only
relocated the truck and other heavy items,
they relocated shelving and large photos,
cleaned high rafters and windows, and also
cleaned the air conditioning units in the
visitors accommodation.

The smiling faces of the visitor centres

staff marvelling at the change spoke much
of the efforts the BHP Billiton crew put in.

The visitor centre, one of Newmans not-forprofit organisations, provides information

for tourists and locals, organises mine site
tours, manages the accommodation units
on site, helps promote the region, retail
products, along with other services.
Barbara ODriscoll, Manager of the
Newman Visitor Centre, said We are all
extremely thankful for the assistance we
received. It was a major job that we had no
idea how to tackle that was made so simple
with the right people.

Naomi Ahmedi from BHP Billiton Iron Ore

said that, We are part of the communities
in which we operate and we strive to
be a positive and active participant in
community life.. Our aim as a business
is to work alongside host communities,
such as Newman, to help achieve ongoing
economic development and social benefits.
Our employees choose to volunteer
directly with some of these outstanding
community organisations, such as the
Newman Visitor Centre, to witness firsthand the important work they do for the
community.
The Newman Visitor Centre says they are
keen for this crews return next year and
are already working on a list of chores.

Family and Youth

Services Hub
Newman will be getting a new Family and
Youth Services hub providing a central
location for related services, an information
and referral service, as well as a point
for supporting and facilitating volunteers
throughout the community.
This is the outcome of several years of
consultation processes.
The Shire of East Pilbara Councillors have
endorsed the scope and discussions
are underway with prospective funding
partners including BHP Billiton, Royalties
for Regions, and Lotterywest. Once funding
is secured it is thought that the hub should
be completed in about two and a half years.
The facility is to be purpose-built for
services to co-locate while allowing for
separate entrances for specific groups and
storage space. Interested existing services
include the Newman Mainstreet Project,
playgroup, scouts, girl guides, and the
current youth centre. There will also be
meeting and social spaces, certain health
and wellbeing services, along with art,
craft, and manual workshop areas.
The separate entrances are intended to
encourage each user group to create a
sense of belonging which would be of
particular benefit in attracting teenagers.
Shire of East Pilbaras CEO, Allen Cooper,
is quoted in the North West Telegraph as
saying, The staff will know the intricate
details of each community service and
will have both the time and understanding
to refer or direct families to the most
appropriate services.
And further that The Community Referral
Centre will also provide information
dissemination services to community
services and will play a pivotal role in
engagement and partnership brokerage
amongst community agencies.

International Womens Day Gala

By Nicole Willis

International Womens Day aims to

celebrate the social, economic, cultural
and political achievements of women. For
the twelfth consecutive year, Newman
Mainstreet Project Inc. has proudly
presented a fantastic evening as it did on 4
March this year.

Thanks also to the Master of Ceremonies,

Jackie Bickendorf, for taking on the role of
narrator for the Murder Mystery night to
complement The Great Gatsby theme.
This theme was embraced by all with a
room filled with flappers, gangsters, and so
many feather boas.

Well done to the nominees this year:

Emma Paul, Denise Boreham, Anita Grace,
Jo McGowan, Jackie Bickendorf and Nicole
Willis. These ladies are honoured through
this award to thank them for all they do
in this community to keep the spirit alive.
These ladies are only a few of the many
women in our community who give so
much of themselves.

This event is not made possible without

endless planning as well as dedicated
volunteers who assist with all facets. As the
driving force behind this event, we thank
numerous people for making it happen in
2016.

Congratulations to Newmans very own

Woman of the Year award winner, Jo
McGowan, for her on going dedication
to the animals of SAFE, contributions to
numerous committees in town, and being
an emergency foster carer in town.
It was awesome to have world-renowned
author and cartoonist, Kaz Cooke speaking.
She is well known especially for her witty
cartoons and one of her book Up the Duff.
Kaz had the room entertained with her
funny and inspiring speech. It had been a
few years in the making trying to get Kaz
up here for this event, but she has said she
would love to return.
It was truly an honour to have Elstreia
open up the evening with a traditional
Martu Welcome to Country, the first Martu
woman to do so at such an event, and we
hope to have her return for years to come.

The Mainstreet Committee: Andrea

Newley, Rose Kemp, Natalie Martin,
Amanda Comer, Jo McGowan, Mel Nelson
and Lisa Rickert; along with their dedicated
partners including Leigh Willis, Brad Comer,
Steve Smoor and Nathan Kemp.
Thanks to Alison McKenzie and her partner,
Steve Bilich, who for the past three years
have been dedicated to not only the
setting up and packing away of the event
but ongoing support for Mainstreet in the
community.

Volunteers from groups within the

community:
Centrals Footy Club
Newman Scouts
East Pilbara BMX
Donors of prizes and equipment:
Kevin Mitchell from Chasing Stars
Coates Hire - electronic sign
GSC Hire - scissor lift
NSHS - early access to the gym and use of

Jeff Doggett from Pilbara 4WD & Trucks chauffeuring the ladies home at the end of
the evening
Special mention to Adamas Jewellers for
donating the gorgeous award winners prize
for the second year in a row. Adamas is BHP
Billitons preferred supplier of diamonds
and BHP employees are entitled to a
substantial discount on quality diamonds.
The caterers on the night:
KG Thai - delicious canapes
AJ Drowley from Magical Cake Creations dessert

Steven Smoor, aka DJ Smoo, who came out

of retirement for the evening to provide
the music and lighting, which were well
received.

The IWD evening is made possible by BHP

Billitons ongoing support of this event and
especially the Production Planning team
who helped set up for the evening.

School Based Trainee

By Kim Bowering, Vocational Education and

Training, Newman Senior High School

Newman Senior High School has partnered

with local businesses and Megan Brouwer,
Apprenticeship Support Australia, providing
increased opportunities for students to
undertake a school based traineeship as
part of their Western Australian Certificate
of Education (WACE).
A school based traineeship involves the
student completing four days of school
classes, being enrolled in a nationally
recognised certificate II or III and working
a minimum of eight hours per week.
The traineeship provides students with
the knowledge and required skillset to
competently complete their qualification
and increase their ability to transition into
full time employment.
The uptake from employers has been
overwhelming,
with
opportunities
out-weighing student numbers in the
programme. Subway, Newman Chamber
of Commerce and Industry, the Shire of
East Pilbara, V Swans, and Newman Senior
High School have all taken on trainees with
opportunities were also offered by Hilditch
Pharmacy, East Pilbara Independent
Support (EPIS), and Newman Golf Club
Wholefoods Caf.
Employing a school based trainee provides
a fantastic opportunity for students to

embed themselves into a community

organisation with potential employment
following their Year 12 completion. We
sincerely thank these businesses for their
ongoing support and contribution towards
work experience and education. NSHS
looks forward to increasing opportunities
for students in 2017.

Newman Senior High School

Trade Training Centre
BHP Billiton provides tremendous
support to NSHSs Trade Training Centre
and its participants. Providing real work
fabrication tasks for students to complete
on behalf of the Mt Whaleback mine site,
mentoring and, most recently, offering the
Year 12 participants the opportunity to
engage in an extension activity with Tom
Galloway and the first year apprentices
at the Newman Training Centre. Three
students took the opportunity to engage in
a four day Perform Computations Course,
testing their skills and improving their
knowledge and understanding of trade
based mathematics.
Working in an adult learning environment
has given students an insight into
expectations, should they pursue a trade
pathway. Thank you to BHP Billiton. This
opportunity will definitely have a positive
impact on the students future.

Rottnest Channel Virtual Swim

Fair Go Games

There was no sign of the down turn at the

Newman Aquatic Centre on 27 February
for the annual Virtual Rottnest Channel
Swim event. With ten teams and one solo
competitor. It was definitely the place
to be. A beautiful morning, a fantastic
atmosphere and a 6:30 am mass start, the
race was on!

Quite a few new faces this year, amongst

veterans of the event, with everybody
supporting each other with big High 5s at
the end of the pool to signal and send off
the next swimmer.

The Shire of East Pilbara, supported by

BHP Billiton, hosted the Fair Go Games
in March on Emu Oval in conjunction with
the Welcome to Newman event which
included a mine site tour.

The event catered for all swimming

capabilities. You did not have to be a
squad swimmer. It was the taking part that
counted raising money for Royal Flying
Doctor Service (Western Operations), onwater safety and compliance providers,
Fremantle Volunteer Sea Rescue Group,
and the 1,500m iconic vessel, the Leeuwin
Ocean Adventure Foundation. So far the
entire event has raised $297,404.23

The afternoon and evening saw fun and

games along with a BBQ, bouncy castle
and water obstacle course. This was a good
family event with all ages in attendance.
DJ Rev enthusiastically ran the games
including three-legged races, obstacle
courses, egg and spoon, puzzles, tug-o-war,
and more.

There were 71 competitors including one

solo swimmer, two duos, five teams of four,
three novelty teams (up to 10 people), and
15 Lap Accrual Swimmers who swam the
20 kms solo over the month of February
including a six year old girl and nine year
old boy. There were over 30 spectators and
supporters.
Solo
Kevin May, the one solo swimmer,
completed the 20 kms in just 8 hours 12
minutes.
Duos
Team Titans 5 hr 35 min
The Dolphins 6 hr 42 min
Teams of 4
4-by-4 6 hrs 28 mins
3 girls and a guy getting wet 7 hrs 17 mins
Newman Orecas 6 hrs 14 mins
The Stokers 7 hr 40 min
Novelty Teams
Pilbara Mermaids 7 hrs 6 min
The Young and Reckless 9 hr 21 min
Lap Dancers 8 hrs 52 min

This event was sponsored by Karma Resorts

and supported by the Shire of East Pilbara
through facility hire, pool entry fees,
staffing, food, and masseuse. There was
Jeab the masseuse to massage swimmers
during breaks, along with beautiful food
catered by the Newman Golf Club Whole
Foods Caf.
Newmans amateur swim club, The Orecas,
entered three teams; two duos, and a team
of four who were all amazing.

Thanks go especially to the Shires Pip

A huge congratulations to all competitors

for supporting this event. Thank you to
the Shire of East Pilbara and Andrew
Price, Coordinator Aquatic Services, and
his pool staff for organising such a great
event. Again a very successful event at the
Newman Aquatic Centre with the biggest
turn out ever.

Working together to support

the local community
BHP Billiton is proud to support the Western Australian Police.
Through our Social Investment Program we have been working with the
Newman Police Station to combat drug and alcohol abuse and improve
community safety.
This year we donated two drug testing units which will be used for
roadside testing and to assist the local police to understand drug use
trends within the town.
Ensuring the safety of everyone in our local communities is a core value of
our business.
