Maple on Main Art Exhibit

Open Call
The Roxbury Arts Group is partnering with Fleischmanns
First to create Maple on Main, an exciting two-day exhibit
accompanying the Annual Maple Festival in Fleischmanns,
NY. Maple on Main opens April 2, with an artist reception
from 4-6 pm. The exhibit will feature a wide array of maple
inspired work and will bring life to a vacant storefront, 1053
Main Street, for the duration of the Festival.
We ask artists to submit works for
consideration that are inspired by,
based on, or created from maple
trees, syrup, leaves, etc. Artists
are encouraged to use this exhibit
as a challenge to go outside their
comfort zone and experiment with
new ideas. Looking for inspiration? Check out Edward Ruschas, Annie, Poured from Maple Syrup (1966), and
Grandma Moses, Sugaring Off (1943).
Possible mediums could include 3-dimensional objects,

for installation and delivered to the Roxbury Arts Group office by March 18, 2016.

Union Grove Distillery Opens

Fleischmanns resident Todd Pascarella and his
partner, Brian Mulder, have opened their
farm licensed distillery for business earlier
this month. Named for the lost town of Union
Grove, now under the Pepacton, the distillery
recently had a soft opening
and then debuted for Presidents week. Union Grove
offers tours of their facilities
and tastings of their freshly
distilled vodka, and will also
have mixed cocktail specials
featuring their vodka in the
tasting room, as well as by
the bottle sales, and other
merchandise. Union Grove
Distillery products are available in local liquor
stores as well as local drinking establishments.
Located at the corner of Routes 28 and 36,
they are open Wednesday through Saturday,
noon to 9pm. For more information visit,

FLEISCHMANNS RED LETTER NAMES

Fleischmanns Red Letter Names,
from the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories
One of the most well-known residents of our area in the years between the World Wars was coloratura soprano
Amelita Galli-Curci. Sul Monte, her home in Highmount, was her summer retreat for many years. (The main
house was actually on the Delaware County side of the line, but other buildings were on the Ulster side.) But
her first visit to the Catskills (long before her 1921 debut at the Metropolitan Opera) was to Fleischmanns,
where she rented a home on Depot Street. The Galli-Curci Theatre
in Margaretville was named in her honor, and
she performed there on its 1922 opening night.
She left our region for good in 1937, but was
fondly remembered here for many years. She
died in California in 1963
Mme. Galli-Curci was born in Italy, initially
studying to be a pianist. But her voice impressed
the noted composer Mascagni, who advised her
to sing. She made her operatic debut in 1906.
Her first performances in the US were in 1916, and she enjoyed
great success both in the opera house, and as one of the major recording stars for RCA Victor. She retired from singing in 1937.
The Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories has a multi-item
Galli-Curci display.
