The world that Beowulf depicts and the heroic code of
honor that defines much of the story is a relic of pre
Anglo-Saxon culture. The story is set in Scandinavia,
before the migration. Though it is a traditional storypart
of a Germanic oral traditionthe poem as we have it is
thought to be the work of a single poet.

The Anglo-Saxon period lasted for some six centuries, from the
arrival of Germanic invaders from the continent during the early
fifth century AD to the Norman Conquest of 1066.

-The Anglo-Saxons invaded what is current-day England around the
year 450, and were the dominant group until the Norman invasion in
1066. The group consisted of three Germanic tribes: the Angles, the
Saxons and the Jutes. The Anglo-Saxon people pushed the native
Britons to the region now known as Wales.
-Anglo Saxon Religion. The Anglo-Saxons were pagans when they
came to Britain, but, as time passed, they gradually converted to
Christianity. Many of the customs we have in England today come
from pagan festivals. Pagans worshiped lots of different gods.

further differences because of varying contact with Rome.
The tribes participating in the invasion were the northern
tribes, although not the far northern tribes in modern
Norway and Sweden. The Saxons had the greatest contact
with Rome. The Angles had muh more limited contact.
And the Jutes were virtually unknown to the Romans.

Each group of Anglo-Saxon settlers had a leader or war-chief. A strong
leader became 'cyning' - Anglo-Saxon for 'king'. Each king ruled a
kingdom and led a small army. There were many quarrels and wars
between kings, to see who was the strongest.

Combine the information into a logical, coherent paragraph that tells the story of the historical and literary time period.
o Remember that a solid, comprehensive, senior-level paragraph is at least 8-10 sentences.
o Remember that it has a topic sentence and a concluding sentence.
o Remember that you may include information that you recall from research but may not necessarily be part of the graphic organizer above.

You should create a piece of writing that show how seniors take task, purpose, and audience into careful consideration, choosing words,
information, structures, and formats deliberately during the writing process. Merely copying and pasting information will not meet the Common
