Fear of What is Next
Has there ever been something you are scared for prior to it happening? Fear
can be incorporated into many people's lives in many different ways. When one is
sitting home alone and running through their mind all the possibilities of what is going to
happen next. This could be a good or a bad thing depending on the situation at hand.
The fact that you have no idea what is going to happen next pushes you to live one
hundred percent all the time. The reason there is no hesitation to over react in cause of
fear, is because most people think there is no way to prevent a mistake to happen, but
that comes with hard work and intensity throughout your whole life.
The thought that one day you could be riding your bike and then the next day you
are paralyzed in a hospital should motivate you to do great things while you can.
It was almost morning when I reached the front of the line. A guard took hold of
my arm and jerked me toward him.I winced and made a face as he jabbed a pen
into my wrist. The man grinned. "You don't like it?" he asked. He slapped my face
with his open hand, knocking out two front teeth. Blood spurted from my nose
and mouth."You think this hurts? Just wait! You know where you are?"(David
Faber).

This quote is explaining that one day he was in a safe house and then the next day he
is at a concentration camp at the holocaust about to get tortured. He had no intentions
of getting a pen stabbed in his wrist but the guard had all intentions to do that to him. He
was fearing that in the future that would happen. After that all he can think about is, is it
going to happen again, what is going to be next?
You can use the fear that you are generating to do something bad or good. If you
are thinking that a robber is going to come in and kill you that is bad unless you use that
thought to go out and buy a gun. Or you could think I dont have much time i could get
shot or die from a concussion, so I am going to live in the moment and take whatever
life throws at me. Paul Maxwell said, The suffering of a family member shakes us with
our powerlessness, and our failure to fix them. Once one realizes fear is only brought
upon you after something happens to your family or your family tells a scary story is
when one can realize there is no going back. Lets say its gameday, the stage is set
and the stands are full, you are playing quarterback and the first pass of the game you
throw a pick six. Now the initial thought strikes what am I going to do next time I have
the opportunity to pass it? Will I throw another pick? If that had never happened then
one wouldnt be scared. The cause of the fear is the first thing that happens and the
effect is what you do because of it. One day there will be a college coach that walks up
to you and asks you about something, are you going to be prepared for that moment?
Your wrestling coach walks up to you and asks if you want to move up to first
place and how you can prove you will dominate at the top level. What are you going to

say? Are you going to be prepared, are you going to show your coach what you are all
about? These questions are something one needs to ask him or herself before they fear
not being ready. If you channel the fear into a positive thought, like if you are scared that
a coach is going to ask a question that you might not know the answer to, dont fear it
just learn from it. Commonly known as chronophobia or being scared of the future
makes it so you are never wanting to age or find out what is in store for you. The causes
can be as severe as depression or as light as anticipation. While anxiety is defined by
uncertainty, human anxiety is greatly amplified by our ability to imagine the future, and
our place in it, even a future that is physically impossible. If one can see their future
they are more likely to fear more. With imagination we can ruminate over that yet to be
experienced, possibly impossible scenario. We can see that something is going to
happen even when in the present there is nothing happening.
Fear can in a way be interpreted as a superstition. For example, if one would be
thinking about hitting a deer on the road all week, that will give them more of a chance
to hit the deer in real life. My mom once said, There is only one way to face your fear,
live in the future. If you dont worry about everything, the good and the bad it will help to
clear your mind and get over the phobia you have. When noticing all the good things
that are going right, put aside all of the bad things in your life and dont ever say the
future is too much to handle. You will no doubt break down if youre scared to talk to a
girl and when you ask her out and she says no because you were too scared in the

Hennings 4
past. To prevent from breaking down one could make a list of questions to see if they
want to know what to talk to a girl about. But this subject really could go anywhere or

anything, when life throws you a hanging curveball you smash it. You dont just expect
to be great, it comes with the type of chemistry you have and the confidence you have
going into the event.
This topic can be a broad one but if one narrows is down, school is one of the
bigger topics. In a testing environment there are two mentalities to have, Im going to
ace this test, or I am going to fail this test. If you are too caught up in being scared to
take the test because you are going to fail it there is a bigger chance that when you
decide to take the test you will actually fail it. Joseph Ledoux said, Fear and anxiety are
in the brain because they helped our ancestors and theirs cope with lifes challenges. But
when these states interfere with our ability to survive and thrive, one has an anxiety
disorder. One other thing that one could be scared of is a workout. This is a major one
because in a weight room there are usually a lot of people that want to get big so they are
in there everyday until you fear going in the next day because everyone can do more
than you.
Pride is a big part in getting over the fear of what is going to happen next. The
soldiers go into war every single day not knowing what is going to happen to them. The
pride and dignity that they have for this country pushes them to not think about getting
killed. They think about one thing, and one thing only, do the job that they were
assigned. Theres only one thing in life that people should focus on, and that is the job
Hennings 5
they have at hand.(Paul Maxwell) This just means that in life we have upper class and
lower class and if you are on the lower class you do your jobs plus whatever the
upperclass makes you do. If you are on the bottom you are more likely to fear the top
guys and what they will make you do next. Throughout ones life they will be asked to do

things that shouldnt be their job and they will have to say yes because their scared of
what theyll do if he says no.
One person might argue that there is no such thing or there is more upside to
being scared of what is going to happen in the next moment of your life. David Faber
said, Upside to fear? yes, heaven. This might be a small quote but it has so much
meaning behind it. The only upside fear brings you is death and going to heaven where
you dont have to worry about bad people in the world that went to hell. One may not
think that fear is controlling your life but once they see that actions caused by fear are
more stressful and full of tension they will realize that their whole life they have been
holding back. In a life as short as this one you cant be scared of the future you have to
embrace whatever comes in whether it is good or bad.
Fear makes you think about what is going to happen next. The fact is that this
wont go away unless one loses emotion, but I dont remember the last person that did
that. The point of the matter is in life if you dont let lose and enjoy it you will be sitting
on your couch being scared for your life, getting more and more scared every year.
