LESSON PLAN: Shapes

March 7-10, 2016

Standard:
CCSS.1.G.1Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining

attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
CCSS.1.G.2Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-

circles) or three- dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular
cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.
CCSS.1.CE.2.1 Use textures in two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art.
CCSS.1.CE.2.4 Plan and use variations inline, shape,/form, color, and texture to communicate ideas or feelings in
works of art.

Objective:
The students will be able to identify and compare the characters (i.e. number of vertices and sides, closed or open) of different
shapes (i.e. square, rectangle, triangle, trapezoid, and circle).
The students will be able to build the different shapes out of pretzel sticks and marshmallows.
The students will be able to create an artwork by drawing one or more of the shapes learned.
The students will be able use create composite shapes from the shapes learned.

Script

(4 days/1
hour each
day)
Day 1:
Square &
Rectangle
(45 min)

Teacher will implement a

mini-lesson on vertices,
sides, open, & closed
and the difference
between squares &
rectangles (20 min)
o Definitions

o Use students as
models

Day 2:
Triangle &
Trapezoid
(45 min)

Students will build

squares and rectangles
by using pretzel sticks
and marshmallows and
glue their models onto
their handouts. (5 min)
o Students will
complete the
square and
rectangle portions
of the handout.

Students will work with

their groups to complete
pages 636-638 of their
workbook. (10 min)

Teacher will review the

workbook problems. (10
min)

Teacher will review (5

min)
o Definitions of
vertices and sides
o Attributes of
squares and
rectangles
Teacher will teach about
triangles and trapezoids
(20 min)
o Students model

Students will be
working in small
groups to
understand the
problems from
the workbook.
Lesson involves
a lot of visuals
and hands-on
activity.
