and its easy to read. I tried to do the same thing when creating my book. I used white construction pape
GBC binder, crayons, colored pencils, and markers. This book is targeted to ages 3-5. I think Pumpkin
Counting is a book that will capture the students attention and enhance their curiosity. They will be ea
to know what they will count on the next page. I tried to make it simple and easy to read for this age gro

The activities that follow the book are connected to VA Building Block, Number and Number sense, (Rea
counting book) block 1. The objective is for the students to learn about sorting, estimating, graphing,
counting, and recognizing shapes.

1. For Sorting, I will give the students a handful of different size of cutout pumpkins, (small, medium, an
large, then ask them to sort them by size.

2. For estimating, I will bring in a pumpkin. I will ask the students to estimate how many seeds are inside
the pumpkin. I will write the students names on the board next to the number they estimate. After
completing the activity below the pumpkin will be carved. The class will count the pumpkin seeds togeth
and compare their estimation to how many seeds there were in the pumpkin.

3. For graphing, I will construct a picture graph with the students. Each student will choose their favorite
shape (triangle, square, and circle) for the eyes, nose, and mouth of the pumpkin. They will put the shap
they pick on the graph. The class will count to determine which shape was picked most for the eyes, nos
and mouth. I will then carve the pumpkin based on the graph.

4. For recognizing shapes, and counting, I will make a game for the students to play. First, I will review th
basic shapes with the students (triangle, square, and circle). The board game will have a blank pumpkin
it. On the left side of the board game will be the key to what shape to draw based on the number rolled.
For numbers 1 and 2 the students will draw a triangle, for numbers 3 and 4 a square, and numbers 5 and
a circle. Students will take turns rolling the dice and drawing the correct shape.

Artifact Rational
I wrote and Illustrated this homemade book in CHD146, Math, Science, and Social Studies for Young
Children, in Fall 2014. In this class we had to create a homemade childrens book, that introduces math,
science, and social Studies. We were also assigned to turned in a two paragraph write up that connects
this activity to Virginia Building Blocks. I developed this book to show my ability that I can write and also
illustrate children's book.
This artifact demonstrate my growth as professional because it shows my understanding on how I can
create an artifact such as this to teach children math, science, and social studies at the same time. It falls
under Standard 5: Using content Knowledge to build a meaningful curriculum, and it addresses
the key element 5c. Using their own knowledge, appropriate early learning standards, and other resources
to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful , challenging curricula for each child. This artefact falls
under this standard because It teaches children two subjects math and science in one book. I can do, as I
mentioned on my write up a lot of fun activities that fallows after introducing this book to children.
This artifact demonstrate my growth as a professional because it shows my understanding on
integrating different subjects. I learned to make my first homemade book, the book that was written and
illustrated by me. I was able to connect this book to VA Learning Blocks, and make so many fun math
activities that can be connected to the book. I will use this book and the activities with my kindergarteners
every fall to teach them math, and science at the same times.
