The Alberta Emerald Foundation

Albertans are passionate about balancing the development of rich

resources with environmental stewardship. Celebrating its 25th year,
the Alberta Emerald Foundation (AEF) is proud to recognize and
showcase the extraordinary achievements made by individuals and
organizations who are dedicated to protecting, preserving, enhancing
and sustaining the environment.

Our Mission

Recognizing, celebrating and inspiring environmental excellence.

We Value

Recognition of environmental excellence

Communication and collaboration with others.
Promotion of environmental attitudinal change.
Integrity and credibility of the Alberta Emerald Foundation.

The Emerald Awards

This uniquely-Albertan award showcases our provinces environmental

success stories across all sectors. Presented annually since 1992, the
AEF has recognized over 260 recipients and 550 finalists through the
assistance of a panel of third-party judges. By elevating the ingenuity
and dedication of the Emerald Award recipients and finalists, the AEF
inspires others to assess their everyday environmental habits and
practices, leading to a healthier and cleaner environment.

With funds from sponsors and individual donors, the AEF provides microgrants to youth-led and youth-targeted environmental projects and
initiatives across the province (aged 25 years and under). The AEF strives
to allocate over 100 grants every year.
Youth Environmental Engagement Grants have been awarded to
gardening and naturalization projects, environmental awareness
programs, composting, recycling and waste management projects,
energy consumption monitoring programs, and field trips to zoos,
outdoor classrooms, museums and other environmental education
centres.

The Ron Kruhlak Award

From the dozens of Youth Environmental Engagement Grant recipients

awarded each year, one project or initiative is selected to receive the
Ron Kruhlak Award of $1,000 cash.
This special award honours Mr. Kruhlaks extraordinary contributions to
the AEF over the past 25 years, while rewarding inspiring youth-led or
youth-targeted initiatives and projects for their excellent environmental
stewardship.

The AEF and Youth

The AEF believes in inspiring the next generation of eco-heroes by

supporting Albertas youth in their environmental efforts. Each year,
over 7,000 youth participate in activities supported by the AEF, like the
Youth Environmental Engagement Grant program, the Ron Kruhlak
Award and the Youth Category Emerald Award.
