Poultrytakesitsname,likeotherroadsnearbysuchasMilkStreetandBreadStreet,fromthevarious
produceoncesoldatCheapside(meaning"marketplace"inOldEnglish).JohnStow,writingattheend
ofthe16thcenturynotedthat"thepoulterersarebutlatelydepartedfromthenceintootherstreets".[1]

History
Inthe15thandearly17thcentury,Poultrywasnotedforitstaverns,butfewwererebuiltaftertheGreat
Fireof1666.[2]
ThechurchofStMildredPoultryoncestoodonthenorthsideofthestreet.RebuiltaftertheGreatFire
tothedesignsofSirChristopherWren,itwasdemolishedin1872[3]anditssitesoldandusedtobuild
theGreshamLifeAssuranceoffice.[2]In1891,HenryB.Wheatleywrotethat,withtheremovalofthe
church,
theclearingawayoftheoldhousesonbothsidesoftheway,andtheerectionintheirplace
oflargeblocksofofficesandshopsofconsiderablearchitecturalpretensions,andthe
generalwideningofthethoroughfare,thePoultryhassince1850beenentirelychangedin
characterandaspect.[4]

Thestreetgaveitsnametoaprison,PoultryCompter,oncelocatedthere.Itwasabrickbuildingwith
fifteenwards,oneofwhichwassetasidespecificallyforJews.Itwasclosedintheearly19thcentury,
anditsprisonerstransferredtothenewWhiteCrossStreetCompter.[5]

Notablebuildings
Althoughrelativelyshortinlength,Poultryisthelocationofanumberofnotablebuildings.No1
PoultryisapostmodernofficeandretailbuildingwhichishometotheCoqd'Argentrestaurant,which
includesarooftopterraceandformalgarden.AsmalllaneoffPoultry,Grocers'HallCourt,leadstothe
liveryhalloftheWorshipfulCompanyofGrocers,oneoftheCity'soriginaltwelvegreatlivery
companiesthatrankssecondinthecompanies'orderofprecedence.Themainentrancetothehallison
PrincesStreettothenorth.
At2735PoultryistheoldheadquartersofMidlandBank,aGradeIlistedbuilding.Itwasusedasthe
"secretlocation"forthefilmingsetfortheweeklongChannel4televisionshowTheBankJob,
broadcastin2012.Thesetwasmadetolooklikearealbankvaultwithacageandlargemetalvault
door,althoughoncloserinspectiontherewasalotofMDF,thedoorwasmainlywooden,andthe
"marble"stairsthatleaduptothevaultwerealsowood,paintedtolooklikemarble.Thisisknownas
'trompel'oeil'.
