Vocalrestorvoicerestistheprocessofrestingthevocalfoldsbynotspeakingandsingingtypically
followingviralinfectionsthatcausehoarsenessinthevoice,suchasthecommoncoldorinfluenzaor
moreseriousvocaldisorderssuchaschorditisorlaryngitis.[1]
Thepurposeofvocalrestistohastenrecoverytime.Itisbelievedthatvocalrest,alongwith
rehydration,willsignificantlydecreaserecoverytimeafteracold.[2]Itisgenerallybelieved,however,
thatifoneneedstocommunicateoneshouldspeakandnotwhisper.Thereasonsforthisdiffersome
believethatwhisperingmerelydoesnotallowthevoicetorestandmayhaveadehydratingeffect,[3]
whileothersholdthatwhisperingcancauseadditionalstresstothelarynx.[4]
