Transition Curves

Transition Curve
Introduced

between a straight line and a curve or

between two curves.

It

facilitates the gradual change from straight line

to a curve or from one curve to another.

What

happens as soon as a vehicle enters a curve?

It experiences a
centrifugal force

There are chances for

the vehicle to derail,
overturn or slip

How can we avoid this??

10

r = Radius of the curved banked road

m = Mass of the moving vehicle

11

Let v be the maximum speed of the vehicle

Assuming the force of friction to be

negligible when the vehicle is moving at a
high speed, the forces acting are:
Weight = mg
Normal reaction exerted
by road surface on the
vehicle, N
Horizontal component of
N = NSin
Vertical component of
N = NCos

12

The

vehicle has no vertical motion.

So,

N Sin directed towards the centre of

the curve provides the necessary
centripetal force.

13

Dividing

get,

second equation by first we

14

The super
elevation () is
independent of
the mass of the
vehicle

15

v is the maximum safety speed with which

vehicle can be safely driven along a
banked road. This is also independent of
the mass of the vehicle.
