Lesson Content
What Standards (national
or state) relate to this
lesson?
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.8
Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and
pennies, using $ and symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and
3 pennies, how many cents do you have?
Essential Understanding
How do you order coins to help find the total value of a group of coins?
When provided with a word problem involving coins, students will be able to order the
coins based on value and determine the sum, 80% of the time.
Rationale
Students must be able to master this strategy in order to have more strategies
available to them to use when faced with real life money situations.
Formative Evidence: Teacher will be taking observational notes throughout the lesson,
as well as asking students to self evaluate through out the lesson. Students group
activity sheet will be observed through the lesson to determine if they are able to
move on to the independent work.
Summative Evidence: The student will turn in their self evaluation sheet and the end of
the lesson. Students independent work in the workbook will also be reviewed.
What background
knowledge is necessary
for a student to
successfully meet these
objectives?
What misconceptions
might students have
about this content?
Student will probably struggle with counting the sets of different value coins using the
same value. If this occurs then I will refer back to the challenge question and how it
assisted us to place them in order based on value but that we must remember that
different coins have different values.
Lesson Implementation
Teaching Methods
Time
1. Who is
Each content area may require a different step-by-step format.
responsibl Use whichever plan is appropriate for the content taught in this
e?
lesson. For example, in science, you would detail the 5 Es here
(Engage/Encountering the Idea; Exploring the Idea;
Explanation/Organizing the Idea; Extend/Applying the Idea;
Evaluation).
1.
Review
Teacher will ask students to turn and talk with their table
teams and discuss What did we learn yesterday? Teacher will
be walking around and touch and go conferencing with as many
groups possible.
We will then discuss as a class what was talked about. What
I discussed with ____ was or What my partner said was
2.
Introduce skill focus
So far from the discussion and your self reflections from
yesterdays lesson you have shown me that you are ready to
move on to the next skill.
Teacher will then introduce the skill focus for this lesson:
Ordering coins by value.
Teacher will then ask a student to read the essential question
for the lesson:
How do you order coins to help find the total value of a
group of coins?
Have students highlight in the book. Ask why we need to
learn this, have students turn and talk then discuss.
3.
Challenge Problem
Teacher will then pretend to spill coins onto the floor. The
teacher is to pick up the coins and place them on the white board
being projected on the ELMO. Question should be written on the
mini white board and projected for students to see. Then the
teacher will say I want to buy a packet of gum, it costs $1.17, do
I have enough?
Model problem
Teacher can completely model a problem, or may call on a
student to come up and work the problem. Teacher should be
asking guiding questions during this time.
Group Activity
By the Spoonful - Students will be placed in groups of 3 and
will receive a bowl full of the plastic coin sets. The students will
be instructed to take turns spooning coins out of the bowl and
determining the total amount of the coins. They are to fill out the
worksheet provided. The teacher is to be touch and go
conferencing with the groups and checking to make sure they are
doing the activity correctly. Once a student has demonstrated
that they have mastered the activity the Teacher should allow
them to move on to independent work.
2.
Independent work
Teacher will instruct students to move into their workbooks
and complete the On Your Own section. Teacher should be
walking around checking students work and allowing them to go
on to the Problem-Solving section when appropriate.
3.
Wrap up
Allow a student to come up and review the H.O.T question.
Remind students of Essential Question and review possible
answers.
2. Last checkpoint- Ask students to complete the last check
point on the self evaluation. Have students turn in sheet.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
Students are exposed to money in their personal life in situations like allowances.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
The local community uses coins on a daily basis.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
I will enrich the lesson by allowing the students to move forward on their own. An
enriching homework page will also be provided to these students, in place of the
normal math pages.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
I will differentiate for students who need additional language support by referring them
to the math word wall that is available in the classroom. They will also have their math
reference notecards available to use during the activity and independent work. I will
also be available to clarify any misunderstanding of the word problems.
Accommodations (If
needed)
D.S (ELL)- Math key words are provided on the math wall for the student to refer to.
Student is also allowed to ask for clarification if there is a word he is unfamiliar with.
Students will also have their math reference notecards available to use during the
activity and independent work.
E.A (ELL)- Math key words are provided on the math wall for the student to refer to.
Student is also allowed to ask for clarification if there is a word she is unfamiliar with.
Students will also have their math reference notecards available to use during the
activity and independent work.
