Classroom Management Plan

Seating Plan

The seating in the classroom is set

up in the shape of a horseshoe.
With this shape, students are all
close enough to see the smart
board and hear me when Im at
the front of the classroom. I have
arranged students in a way that I
feel will set them up for success in
the classroom. Chatty students are
dispersed among the quiet ones,
and academically stronger
students by the weaker ones. The
seating plan will be changed about
once each month.

Classroom Rules

My teacher mentor has preestablished rules that the students

are aware of. I have established
two blanket rules with my students
that cover all of those preestablished rules as well as some
additional rules.
Respect: the feelings of others,
the differences of others, the
opinions of others.
Responsibility: for your actions,
for your body.

Classroom Procedures

-At the beginning of the week,

students are given a handwriting
assignment, a problem of the
week (math), a spelling list, and an
incorrectly punctuated paragraph.
Throughout the week, students are
to study/work on these at home
for homework and bring them
back on Friday to be marked
and/or tested.
-Students have an agenda that
they are to bring to and from
school each day. They write down
their homework, any upcoming
events, or notes to parents that
need to be seen. There are two

different agenda checkers each

week that will go around and
check each students agenda to
ensure it has been completed.
-On Mondays and Fridays
students begin the day with PE.
They know to get their agendas
out, change their shoes, and line
up quietly for gym. From Tuesday
to Thursday, students begin their
day with Language Arts. They all
know that when they get to their
desks, they are to take out their
LA duo tangs and copy down the
handwriting sentence from the
smart board. After this, they know
to wait quietly for the next
instruction.
-At the end of each day, students
are given 10 minutes to clean up
the classroom (pick up garbage,
sweep, vacuum, chairs away, etc.)
and get their backpacks ready for
home-time.
Whole Class Management

-Brain Breaks: If students are

required to do a lot of sitting, or
they are getting fidgety, I stop
them and do a brain break for
about 1-3 minutes. This helps
them to regroup and focus for the
remainder of class. I plan to bring
in a jar with a bunch of brain break
ideas folded inside and choose
them that way.
-Attention grabbers- Students
are used to a couple different
attention grabbers. Too Infinity
And Beyond, Shark bait Hoo
Ha Ha, If you can hear me, clap
once Freeze, etc. Students are
also very familiar with the quiet
Coyote hand signal which works
well for management in the
hallway.
-Popsicle sticks- There is a jar at

the front of the class that has

popsicle sticks with student
names. This may be used on many
different occasions to call upon
students during whole class
discussion or to create groups, etc.
-Partner System- I have preestablished a partner system for
all students. Each student has a
small paper taped to the top
corner of their desk that lists four
partners (linked to a unit we are
currently working on, ex. gear
partner, pulley partner, etc.).
When an activity comes up where
they need to pair up, I simply tell
students to work with their gear
partner or pulley partner, etc.
Red Cups & Blue Cups- When
students are working on projects,
they will each have a red cup and
a blue cup. If everything is cool
they keep the blue cup stacked on
top. If they need help, they stack
the red cup on top to let me know.
In the mean time, they are to
move on and work on something
while I make my way to their desk.
Individual Management

Standing desks- We have

brought in two desks for the back
of the classroom that are
designated as standing desks.
These are empty and are available
to use if individual students are
sick of sitting and need to stand
up for a while. There are a few
students in particular that these
desks are very helpful for.
Plan of action- A specific student
in the classroom has specific plans
he/she is required to follow in
terms of behaviour. This includes
reporting to a teacher before and
after recess to avoid problems that
have arisen in the past. In the

future, I plan to create an

individual plan for this student
regarding managing his/her
actions when he/she gets upset.
-There are also a couple
students behind grade level
academically that are given
individualized/adjusted
assignments so they are able to
excel.
ELL- For our ELL student in the
first acquisition stage of language
learning, we have an ipad for
him/her to use for translation
purposes. He/she knows to grab
this ipad when he/she does not
understand and to ask for help if
still unsure.
Fidgets- In the future, I plan to
bring in fidgets for students that
are able to focus better when they
have something in their hands.
There will be a few of these in the
classroom and they will be shared
among the students, but those
that need them most will get
priority.
P.E Management

Squads- I have created squads,

so that when students first enter
the gym for phys. Ed. they know
exactly where to go and what to
do. This creates a very smooth
transition from the classroom and
eliminates wasted time at the
beginning of class. These are also
handy for grouping students
quickly.
Whistle- Students know that
when I blow the whistle one time it
means freeze and when I blow it
twice, it means to bring it in and
sit down.
Equipment- If a game/activity we
are playing requires equipment, I
ask for volunteers to help set up

and put away to save time.

Students are happy to help and it
makes things a lot easier.
Water Breaks- Students are not
to leave the gym to have a drink
of water. The periods are very
short, so students may get a drink
before PE and/or on the way back
to the classroom. Exceptions may
be made depending on the activity
we are doing.
Bathroom/Drink Procedures

Hands signals- Previously

established hand signals are used
for students to get a drink, go to
the bathroom, go to their locker,
and sharpen their pencil. If a
student is making one of these
hand signals, I simply give them a
nod and they go on their way. This
eliminates the disruption of
lessons on many occasions. It can
also eliminate embarrassment,
depending on the student.
Rules- Students know that only
one person may go to the
bathroom and get a drink at one
time. If there is one student gone,
they will have to watch for that
student to come back before
going. Also, if it is within five
minutes until a break (recess or
lunch), they should wait until then
go.
