Warfare in the Vietnam War.


Introduction
This lesson is designed so that you will know the tactics that were used by the Austalian Army and the Viet
Cong in Vietnam.
The questions that you will answer are:
1) What did the Australian Army think the best way to deal with the Viet Cong was?
2) Name and describe the tactics that they used to achieve this.
3) What was Operation Crimp?
4) Research a Viet Cong tunnel.
-what was the average distance of the tunnels?
-what rooms would have been in the tunnels?

Task
Your task is to answer the four questions.
The answers will vary in length.
1) short reponse. (3 marks)
2) extended response. (6 marks)
3) medium length reponse. (4 marks)
4) extended response. (6 marks).
The answers are to be in the format of a full sentence. The length of answer should be the equilevant as to
what was expected in your recent exam.

Process
To complete this task you need to conduct research on the internet.

After you get the information you need to answer the question being. Answers are to be written in full
sentences. not bullet points.

Evaluation
What should be in your answers.
For question 1- Did the Australians believe that the best way to deal with Viet Cong was by actively
engaging them and destroying them?
For question 2- The Australians developed three tactics that the Army used. You need to name these
three and then describe each one in some detail.
For Question 3- when did this take place? how many were involved? What did the American and

Australian soldiers find?


For Question 4- You need to describe the tunnels in detail, what did they contain? to help you need in this
you can copy and paste a diagram of one and use it to point to the features.

Conclusion
When you complete this assignment it will be clear how different the Vietnam War was to other conflicts
that Australia had fought in. In the other wars that Australia had fought war in (World War 1, World War 2,
Korean War) they were fighting against a visible enemy. How would the presence of tunnels affect the
mentality of the soldiers stationed there?
