Define the
Problem
What need or

want must be met by the solution?

We will design and construct a new crane for a construction company that will hold the greatest
amount of weight before failing before march 15. By using the engineering design process and create
a model applying the Pythagorean theorem create a prototype for the crane and test is for failure and
effectiveness of the design by completing the crane strain

Identifying criteria and specifying constraints
5. Identifying criteria and specifying constraints
What are the criteria and constraints of the design problem?

Date: 3/3/16

Criteria
Ability to hold the greatest amount
of weight before failing
20 inches is the maximum
Joints glued
Include hook
Attacked to tower
Hold 14 inches from tower center

Constraints
Composites
When sizing a crane, one cant just look at the
heaviest model at a radius and compare it to
the composite of the crane at the matching
radius
Add in the weight of the rigging, weight of the
block, weight of the lines, weight of the ball
attached to the string.

Step 9.)Testing and Evaluating the Design, using specifications

As you create your solution, you will perform tests to make sure that the solution is
meeting the needs of the given problem. If your solution does not work, you may need
to repeat the previous steps of the Engineering Design Process, until you find a
functional design. In the space below, document the type of tests you conducted and the
results.

Step 10.)

Refining the Design

Based on your tests, what design refinements should be made to the prototype to
ensure that it can satisfy all of the criteria and constraints of the design problem.

Refinements
We could relocate the string, so the weight would be more evenly distributed. We could also add more
materials to the boom so it could withstand more weight. We should also add triangles to the sides to
distribute the weight more evenly.
