Boys and Girls Club Activity Plan

Throughout my time at the Boys and Girls club at the Johnson site, I noticed that even
though the children are extremely diligent in both school work and playing. However, the
children lack a sense of respect for their peers and sometimes even the volunteers and staff
members. This affects their social development because it is an unpleasant experience for the
people surrounding them when they work and talk with them. Academically, they wont have
respect from their academic community because they are not presenting appropriate behaviors
and manners which will not enable them to learn to their highest potential. I created my lesson on
the golden rule which teaches the younger children to treat others the way they want to be
treated. By learning early on in their lives about treating others kindly, their academic and social
development will be a smoother process because they are able be kind to their fellow peers. By
embracing and understanding the concept of the golden rule, these children will be able to
connect easier with the communities that enter their ecological systems as they develop and they
will form stronger academic bonds that make the entire academic process a smoother journey.
THE GOLDEN RULE ACTIVITY PLAN (30-45 Minutes)
Objective: I will be able to treat others the way I want to be treated.
*Bring cupcakes as a treat/ incentive for the kids*
Supplies/Materials needed: color pencils/markers, pencils, paper, cupcakes, printed worksheets,
Do Unto Otters book from the library
1. Ask the kids if they know or have heard about the golden rule and what is it? Remind that
the old original saying was do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
2. Read Do Unto Otters and clarify the otters and others saying. It is a book about a
rabbit who has new neighbors that are otters. The rabbit knows nothing about otters and
he gets the advice from an owl that tells him to simply treat his new neighbors the way he
would like them to treat him. On pages with the different languages ask Does anyone
know how to say ____ in a different language? to engage the children in the story and to
make sure they are paying attention.
3. After reading the book, as response questions, have each child answer one question:
Remember a time you were:
a. Friendly?
b. Polite?
c. Honest?
d. Cooperated?
e. Shared?
f. Kind?
4. Pass out the Golden Rule worksheet and tell them theyre going to think of something
that you would like others to do to you that you would do to them. For an example, show
them my example of the worksheet. Have them work on it for ~15 minutes. Ask if anyone
wants to share what they wrote and drew. This will show if the children truly understood
what the golden rule is and how it should be implemented in their lives.
5. Give the children a cupcake at the end for their hard work and effort!
