through mitosis where the cell growth stops and starts dividing. It may sometimes stay in Gap 0
for a while. This is where the cell rest.
**She asked worried**
Diana: why does the cell get a mutation in the DNA?
Doctor: when DNA replicates a DNA can occur for three reason we call them risk factor. This
increases your chance of cancer, but doesnt mean you will get cancer. One it can hereditary
conditions, two outside forces like sun, smoking, etc., and just being unlucky. The DNA doesnt
copy itself right.
**Bailey yawned**
Bailey: sorry, Im tiredI had to study for an exam
Doctor: Its all right, where was I.
Diana: What is D.N.A.
Bailey: I know this doctor
**she said with grin and a positive tone**
Bailey: There are four macromolecules, nucleic acid is the polymer and nucleotide is the
monomer, and D.N.A/R.N. A makes up nucleotides and nucleotides make up nucleic acid.
Doctor: thats right someone is paying attention in class.
** The Doctor gets up and brings them a pamphlet. **
**Diana reads out loud**
Diana: D.N.A and How its Replicates *was the tittle*. DNA is is a molecule that carries most of
the genetic instructions used in the development, functioning and reproduction of all known
living organisms and many viruses.
Doctor: Skip down to where it says Mitosis, but first read on how D.N.A replicates.
Diana: In interphase when the cell is in phase S is where D.N.A replicates. Im confused
Bailey: mom your embarrassing me.
Doctor: Its okay a lot of people dont get right way. Maybe this will help.
** doctor pulls out twizzlers**
Doctor: See this twizzlers is what happens in the S phase and it get pulled apart and gets a
complementary strand. This is called semi conservative replication, this helps so that less errors
can occur. Instead of recreating itself without a model.
Diana: errors?
Doctor: yes, errors, if the D.N.A doesnt replicate right it can cause a mutation, which can cause
cancer.
Bailey: arent there check points to make sure this cant happen?
Doctor: yes, but some times they can be suppressed, and not do there jobs.
Diana: How does base pairing work?
Doctor: D.N.A is made up of phosphate, deoxyribose sugar, nitrogenous base, and there two
different types of nitrogenous base. They are called purines and pyrimidines. There are two
purines called Adenine and Guanine, and there are two pyrimidines called thymine and
cytosine.
Bailey: number one rule is that purines has to be connected to pyrimidines.
Doctor: Adenine connects with thymine, and Guanine connects with cytosine.
Diana: Mitosis has five steps, the first step
**nurse comes in**
Nurse: sorry to interrupt, but you have another patient that is waiting for you.
Doctor: Lets make another appointment in a week to talk about treatments.
Diana: thank you for your time.
** Diana and bailey walked to the car and on the way home
they are both quiet, Diana opens the house door. **
Bailey: Im to get ready for bed.
** she told her mom as she walked up the stairs. While Diana
went to the kitchen and grabbed a wine of glass and poured
herself some wine, and went to the living room and sat down
on the sofa and took off her shoes. She started reading the pamphlet
the doctor gave her. **
Diana: Mitosis has five steps, the first step Prophase. Prophase is where the centrioles move to
the side of the cell. And the D.N.A which is nucleic acids in a strand become chromosomes. This
happens when D.N.A wraps around protein which is called a chromatin and when it condensed
becomes a chromosome. When two identical chromosomes come together, they connect by a
centromere which are known as sister chromatids.
Bailey: mom, have you seen my toothbrush?
Diana: check the bottom of the sink there should be a new packet
Bailey: thanks mom
**Diana keeps on reading**
Diana: prometaphase is where mictrotubes extend from the centrioles and start reaching for
sister chromatids. Metaphase attach to the centromere and buts the sister chromatids in a
line. Anaphase is the step where the sister chromatids get pulled apart. Telophase is where the
cell pitchs in and cytokinesis happens in animals is where the cell divides.
** Diana gets up from the sofa and takes the last drink of red wine and
heads up stairs. She opens her daughters room and walks in to kiss bailey on her head.
Bailey lays there pretending to be asleep as she hears her mom talk. Diana leaves. Bailey faces
the roof of her bedroom staring and looking for some answers. **
Bailey: I have cancer; I have an uncontrolled cell growth that is happening in me. I have
mutation that could have happen in interphase because of my D.N.A didnt copy right, or my
D.N.A didnt pair right, and why me? its not hereditary conditions and it wasnt because of my
environment, but because Im unlucky to have gotten a mutation.
** she fell asleep**
