and Black & White Holstein cattle. This herd has been on ofcial test for nearly 40 years
with current ofcial DHIA records indicating a herd average of 2X 19,644 milk, 4.11%

bad news and better news when it
comes to children being bullied.
The good news is that the
incidence of bullying among teens
is at an all-time low.
The bad news is that one in
five kids still experiences bullying.
The better news is that there
are steps that parents, teachers
and others can take to prevent the
problem.
What To Do About Bullying
1. Spend at least 15 minutes a
day talking with your child.
Research shows this can build the
foundation for a strong relationship, boost your childrens confidence and build effective strategies
for facing bullyingwhether children are being bullied, engaging in
bullying or witnessing bullying.
2. K n o w w h a t s g o i n g o n a t
school, who their friends are and
any challenges they face. Read
class newsletters and school flyers. Check the school website, go
to school events, meet teachers
and counselors at Back to School
night. Know how to reach the parents of classmates.
3. Encourage kids to speak to a
trusted adult if they are feeling
unsafe or are bullied, or see others
being bullied. The adult can give
comfort, support and advice, even if
he or she cant solve the problem
directly. Sharing concerns and fears
with a safe and caring adult can
bring about meaningful solutions.
4. Talk about how to stand up to
kids who bully. Give tips, including
using humor and saying stop
directly and confidently. Talk about
what to do if those actions dont
work, such as walking away or
seeking help from an adult.
5. Ta l k a b o u t s t r a t e g i e s f o r
staying safe, such as staying near
adults or groups of other kids.
6. Urge kids to help others who
are bullied by showing kindness or
getting assistance from an adult.
7. Model treating others with
kindness and respect. Kids learn by
observing adults. Even if it seems
like they are not paying attention,
kids watch how adults manage
stress and conflict, as well as how
they treat their friends, colleagues

Court Reporters Help Record Veterans Stories

(NAPSA)Once again, court
reporters are making sure that the
stories of Americas veterans are
recorded for future generations.
2013 marks the tenth consecutive year that the Veterans History Project (VHP) has worked
with the National Court Reporters
Foundation (NCRF) and the
National Court Reporters Association (NCRA).
The mission of the Veterans
History Project at the Library of
Congress American Folklife Center is to collect, preserve and make
accessible the personal accounts of
American war veterans so that
future generations may hear
directly from veterans and better
understand the realities of war.
U.S. Representative Ron Kind
(WI-3) proposed the Veterans History Project after interviewing
veterans in his own family at a
reunion. His wife, Tawni, a court
reporter, knew that transcriptions
would ensure the accessibility of
interview content.
To date, more than 2,800 interviews in the VHP collection have
been transcribed by court reporters. Once a court reporter transcribes an interview, the transcription is sent to the Library of
Congress to be added to the veterans collection, and in many

Not only do court reporters
serve VHP by transcribing oral
histories that are submitted to the
Library of Congress, they also
dedicate their time as volunteer
interviewers.
I cant tell you how rewarding
its been to me to work with such
dedicated professionals at VHP,
and with court reporters who
unselfishly volunteer their time

future generations of Americans
will know of the sacrifices made to
preserve our freedom, said Beth

Program Coordinator.
NCRF is also an ardent ambassador for VHP, and has promoted
VHP Days on Campus at various
court-reporting schools and firms.
Most recently, NCRA held a VHP
Day during the 2012 NCRA Convention in Philadelphia, and is
planning a VHP Day during the
2013 NCRA Convention in Nashville, Tenn.
In addition to recorded interviews, VHP also depends on volunteers to donate veterans original photographs, letters, military
documents, diaries, journals, twodimensional artwork and unpublished memoirs.
NCRF is a 501(c)(3) charitable
organization, and the philanthropic arm of the 18,000-member
professional association for stenographic court reporters, NCRA.

From Malt-O-Meal to flying

Lynn Carlson was working

at Malt-O-Meal in Northeld,
Minnesota when he decided to
he had to try out the career he
had been thinking about... crop
dusting.
I got the bug when I
watched the spray planes on
our farm when I was a kid,
Carlson said.
Carlson grew up south of
Wendell on the family farm. He
graduated from Elbow Lake/
Wendell High School in 1967
and soon joined the Navy as a
hospital corpsman. Based in San
Diego he learned to y and got
his pilot ratings. But once he
was out of the Navy, Carlson and
his wife, Robin, settled down
in Northeld, both working
for Malt-O-Meal. But he went
back to the family farm often,
had always loved the area... and
ying... and gured out a way
to put them together.
When I told the people
at Malt-O-Meal my plans they
were all for it, said Carlson. In
fact, for several years I would do
my crop spraying in the summer
and continued to work for them
in the winter.
Carlson said agricultural
aviation had always intrigued
him.
It takes a special breed of
person to do it. You dont break
the rules, but feel like you are.
In 1985, Carlson started
Carlson Ag Aviation on the
family farm ten miles west of
Elbow Lake. He built his own
runway and paved it. There are
hangars and outbuildings where
a worker mixes all the product
right on site. Carlson never has
to leave his plane. He sprays
herbicides, corn fungicides,
insecticides on soy beans and

sugar beets and more.
We spray when the farmer does not want to drive over
the crops that are there, he said.
Minnesota has around 150 ag
aviators in the state, working
primarily the western part of
the state, North Dakota, and
South Dakota.
Carlson has just crossed
the 15,000 hour mark piloting
an airplane. He has a Commercial Pilots License, and is
Instrument, Multi-Engine, and
Seaplane rated.
Carlson said ag aviation is
even more popular in southern
states such as Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas where rice
is raised.
They even apply fertilzer
by plane for rice.
Carlsons main work plane
used to be powered with a huge,
and very loud, radial engine.
But that engine failed once in
1998, resulting in a crash, and
now he ies an Air Tractor 502,
with a 750 horsepower turbine
engine.
Its just like the engines
on a 737 jet, but smaller and
with a prop.
The plane costs around
$1 million new and the pilot
is protected like the driver in a
race car with a metal cage, air
bags, air conditioning, and re
protection.
He also owns a Cherokee
Lance he ies for recreation
and travel.
Ag aviation has changed a
great deal since 1985, not only
are the airplanes more powerful, comfortable and safer,
but the spraying itself is more
efcient. No longer doess

the pilot have to rely on a
o
agman on the ground to
show where his next pass
will be. The planes no longer use foam or colored
trailers they drop for the
same purpose. Carlsons
plane is equipped with
GPS, and his passes are
accurate to within one
meter. He can actually
leave a eld and come
back the next day and
start spraying exactly
where he left off. He
can also punch into
on onboard computer
the exact amount of
product he is applying
per acre.
The company
celebrated their 30th
anniversary this past
fall, and Carlson announced he was selling the business to
his son, Boone, and
Boones wife, Charity.

semi-retire, said
Carlson. I will still
be working on the
ground and in the
ofce.
Boone, who
does not y, will be
running the business end of things

recalls working as part of the
ground crew with his father.
The family moved back when
he was ten. He will still work
at Barrett Farm Supply and the
two businesses, although totally
separate, mesh well together
because their busy times do
not overlap.
Carlson Ag Aviation currently has two pilots: crop dusting veteran Buzz Amundson,
and 22-year-old newcomer

Andrew Asleson.
Andrew is a local kid who
works for Prairie Air and told
me one day he wanted to try
ying, said Carlson. He got
his license last year and Buzz
and I have been working with
him, teaching him how to spray.
We are just like mother hens.

generation to work on the family farm.

We have a lot of pride in
the business and want to keep
it in the family, said Boone.
Our customers will benet.
Charity and Boone have

three sons so, hopefully, the
business will continue into yet
another generation.
That would be grandpas
dream, said Carlson.
