5.a] What are state machines? Explain the different types of state machines?
b] Consider the dining philosophers problem described for the case of m=3
philosophers with the following protocol:
• each philosopher begins in a thinking state
• to eat, the philosopher must:
put up the left fork
put up the right fork (and immediately commence
eating)
• to think, the philosopher must:
set the left fork down
set the right fork down(and immediately commence
thinking)
Model this problem using Petri nets with three identical processes (one for each
professor) and three resources (the forks).
6.a] What is a Poisson process? List out the Poisson postulates and its properties?
b] Suppose that telephone calls arrive randomly throughout the day at an office, at an
average rate of two calls per minute. Assuming this to be a Poisson process:
a) How many calls can be expected between 2:00 and 2:05?
b) What is the probability that more than one call will be received between
2:00 and 2:01?
c) What is the probability that more than one call will be received between
2:03 and 2:04?
