Literacy events are writings that are undoubtedly extensions of the authors life and
experiences. Keishas and Troys literacy practices, both written and oral, are certainly
extensions of their lives. For example, in Keishas play, Jus Living, the protagonist
was based on her brother and the protagonists mother was based on her mother. In Troys
rap, Family Fam, the experiences of the speaker is based on Troys own circumstances.

Keisha and Troy both make use of literacy events to tell their livelihoods.
2.
Vernacular writing is text or texts written in the authors native language or dialect.
The vernacular language that Keisha and Troy used can be described as colloquialism. In
their works, they preferred to use the local youths choice of speech in place of standard
English. This can be seen in the excerpts included in the study. The choice to use
watchin young brothas or skanless instead of watching young brothers or
scandalous lies in their audience. The young authors are writing for their peers and they
intend to do so by using the language that they and their intended audience are
comfortable with.
3.
Aural consumption is the taking in of information through means of listening. Both
Keisha and Troy intended for their works to be performedor at least said out loud
instead of read. Although Keisha had written versions of her plays, poems, and song
lyrics, she stated that they achieved their fullest effect and were more meaningful
when spoken. Troys works were almost completely just in his head; those that he did
write were intended to be performed. Both young writers took advantage of not just
written language but also tone and other verbal techniques to emphasize their messages.
