One of the best architects currently working in Barcelona explained one day at a
conference the origins of the tender that
gave rise to one of his latest museums in
a former industrial complex in Barcelonas
Poble Nou district, which occupied a whole
block of the Cerd plan. It was a tender to
construct a building that was initially destined to be the corporate head office of
a real estate group; subsequently, a block
of offices for rent and only later third time
lucky the headquarters of the museum
of a private foundation which demonstrates, once again, that the use is not the
important thing in architecture. A building
that had to be housed within a series of
abandoned warehouses, not a particularly edifying former existence, so much
so that the five invited bidders decided to
pull it down and plan a new building

t18 034
Stephen says This is a necessary intervention in the landscape at a key moment when climate change is already
creating new shorelines and habitats.
Established salt marsh is being eroded
by a combination of rising sea levels
and falling landmass and the entire littoral environment is in a state of flux.
The implications for wildlife and flora
as well as people are challenging
and raise awareness of a particularly
21st century sort of tension and anxiety in our society where place is much
talked about - yet where people are
increasingly out of place and out of
step with nature.

The whole exercise from originating the
ideas, developing the design, seeing the

The winner of a national design competition run by SPUD (Space, Placemaking and Urban Design) has been
announced. The competition to design a structure, known as The Observatory, will provide a residency
space for artists to work in over a 2
year period. It will be an architectural
installation that becomes a sculptural
intervention, a meeting space, a shelter, a look-out and a work space for
a series of artists residencies to take
place.

no puedo agradecer suficiente a
Mina, Lauren, Ross y Ed su increble trabajo y dedicacin. Nuestro trabajo no habra sido posible
sin el apoyo continuo de Feilden
Clegg Bradley Studios y Jane
Wernick Associates. Estamos muy
contento por haber sido elegido
entre tan duros competidores y
ahora estamos mirando hacia
el siguiente paso para trabajar
con Mark y el equipo de SPUD a
fin de realizar el Observatorio. /
Charlotte Knight, of the winning
team, said: The team and I have
been through a fantastic journey
over the last few months and I
cannot thank Mina, Lauren, Ross
and Ed enough for their incredible hard work and dedication.
Our work would not have been
possible without the continuous
support of everyone at Feilden
Clegg Bradley Studios and Jane
Wernick Associates. We are overjoyed to have been chosen from
a selection of such strong entries
and we are now thoroughly looking forward to the next step of
working with Mark and the team
at SPUD in order to realise The Observatory.
The panel felt their winning design cleverly delivered on all the criteria of the
competition and produced an elegant
structure, that although contemporary in
form is rich in texture, tradition and personality. The structures are crafted from
sustainable materials and are respectful
to their environments. Initially a striking
silhouette in the landscape, they slowly
reveal themselves as you approach,
with an exterior surface of charred wood
cladding, complex woven tarred marlin
rope screens and subtle interior detailing.
These quiet spaces will provide a retreat
for the resident artist and a place of discovery for passers-by.
t18 045
t18 046
The Study and The Workshop, are responsive to the landscape through their ability to rotate. This will allow the structures
to act as shifting framing devices to the
landscape beyond and encourage the
artist and audiences to interact by blurring the boundaries between public and
private. The resident artists will be able to
orientate The Observatory to take maximum advantage of daylight and vistas,
or to create shelter from the prevailing
weather. The Study will provide a private
and reflective space for the artists to work,
while The Workshop will allow for a range
of interaction with the general public.
The Observatory will arrive pre-fabricated
to site, the light-touch and simple installation methods causing minimum disruption and disturbance during installation
and removal.

The design features an intense relationship between its occupants and the nature around. So the relationship between

PRODUCTION
The design of Polymorphic was inherently
sustainable, due to the financial constraint of a $1000 budget. The design was
broken down into small and linear pieces
that maximized the quantity fit on a sheet
of plywood. In total, the entire installation
only used 18 sheets of plywood, which
were utilized at over 90% efficiency.

AC: More progress means more production, and more production means the

t18 142
AC: Yes. The issue is the same. The material cycles are closed off in the process of
satisfying demand and in doing this we
need to generate an energy model that
does not produce any waste.
Fs: The sustainability of alternative energies. Isnt it true that the cost of producing a solar panel is only slightly more
than the panel itself produces?
no extraeremos ms petrleo.
AC: This is whats called the Energy Return on Investment (EROI). In the USA in
the early 20th century, it took one litre of
oil to produce 100 barrels, and over time
that yield has fallen; right now the ratio is
1/18. As soon as we get to 1/3 or 1/5 we
wont be extracting any more oil.
Given this perspective, alternative energies are more productive than oil.
t18 143
energas no renovables.
But to move from non-renewable energies to renewable ones, we need to introduce a very high level of access to that
energy. Renewable energies produce a
return on investment after four years of
use. However, to move over to renewable
energies, we need to make a huge investment in energy that can only be achieved
through non-renewable energies.

AC: Yes, but they are unsustainable because they themselves said that they
were going to solve the problems of industrial society using the very materials that
industrial society provided. The problem
lies in satisfying industrial society and its
changing demands.
The architecture of Mies is the most classic of all in his attempt to explore the expressiveness of these materials and their
organization. Nowadays, a Mies might

Shigeru Ban is the standard-bearer for using a material such as cardboard, which is
renewable. He doesnt do this with a view
to standardizing its use as an everyday
component but rather from a desire to
explore it as a material. He creates knowledge and operational capital for anyone
wishing to work with it.
Fs: are some materials more sustainable
than others?
AC: There are no good or bad materials.
Metals can be very good as a material,
depending on how they are used, and
wood, if employed to manage the landscape, is fantastic; but if you only use it
for home carpentry youll end up being a
participant in the destruction of a tropical
rainforest.
Everything depends on how you use it. If
you use aluminium and then throw it away
you are sparking off a disaster, because a
great deal of energy goes into producing
aluminium and it is highly polluting.
Yet aluminium is extremely long-lasting
and you can reuse it. In this case, its a
capital asset. We come back to the closed
cycle we mentioned earlier. We need to
change one form of energy for another; if
you throw the material away, you have to
start the productive cycle all over again. If
you reuse it, the only energy cost is that of

National parks can be visited, but nobody can intervene in them; a National

a tree falls, its left to lie there, nobody

its own resources, without any outside intervention.
Today, we are seeing a return to traditional construction experiences. The University of Grenoble in France (CRAterre)

The conference room at my headquarters, Vivers Ter, is made from thatch with

FS: But this doesnt guarantee sustainability. In a closed cycle there is also
environmental pollution from the transformation of the material, and you need

The interaction between the permeability and the greenness of a city creates

Ascensin a Sumvitg.
estrecho, sinuoso, y a veces, vertiginoso
camino.
But while you get to Bruder Klaus by motorway, the road to Sumvitg is long, narrow, winding and sometimes quite vertiginous.

probablemente, algn aislante trmico.
t18 173
The shell
This represents the most eye-catching element of the church. The success of its expressiveness is due to the adoption of the
traditional building solution of overlapping roof tiles. Transposing them onto a
curved surface turns them into scales.
The main volume consists of a completely
vertical guide cylinder in the shape of a
teardrop; it is 14 metres lenght and 6.5
metres breadth with 19 structural ribs
per side. The skin is formed by a double
sheet which includes an air chamber
and, very probably, some kind of thermal
insulation. The shell is fixed to the ribs by
metal connecting rods.
The interior layer is a metal sheet separated by about 20 cm from the exposed
structure of the interior so that it offers a
weightless backdrop that emphasises the
presence of the ribs.
Once you have been inside the chapel
for a while, you notice that the metal surface takes on a radiance which imbued
the space with a kind of aura.
The exterior sheet of wallboard is not visible, although it takes the support pins for
the wooden panels.
Small larch panels cover the whole of the
surface in contact with the exterior. Their
design displays two unusual geometric
features; the vertex, and the overhang at
the entrance door to the chapel.
The upper part of the shell is an uninterrupted strip of horizontal window about
50 cm high, going round the whole perimeter of the nave. This elevated position makes the ceiling the protagonist
inside the church. On entering, your gaze
is drawn inexorably upwards. Although it
covers an area of no more than 65 m,
the chapel of St. Benedegt exudes the
feeling of a building dedicated to worship. Even when there is no one else inside, it feels natural to adopt quiet, cautious movements.
t18 174
The small size of the nave made it essential to magnify the geometry of secondary ribs which are placed in an equidistant internal division all around the
perimeter, positioned approximately one
metre apart from each other.

Una de las maquetas expuestas es precisamente del proyecto de las termas de Vals;
y 50 m2; siempre referidos a medidas medias
aproximadas.

almost womb-like, with a bare cross and

given us a binary system of ones and zeroes, of on and off, but candles give off
their diffuse light full of nuances, doubts

CONCIENCIA Y ARQUITECTURA
CONSCIOUSNESS AND ARCHITECTURE
sociedad lquida empieza a desecharnos
As the autumn years approach we begin to recover, at last, the capacity for
introspection that leads us to question
ourselves from the viewpoint of earned
freedom. Liquid society begins to throw
us aside like consumer goods and with
it we are given back the opportunity for
creative imagination and we use it!
