What is Mellon Transfer Student Research Program?


A. The Mellon Transfer Student Research Program aims to aid
transfer students at the College by facilitating their ability to
conduct serious and rigorous research, giving them the
support and training they need to succeed, and helping
them develop mentor relationships with faculty members.

A. For accepted applicants, students will register for an


independent study or V-section in the spring with their
faculty mentor.

What will the students receive for being part of the program and
for carrying out the research project?
A. In addition to course credit, students will receive a stipend
of $350.

Who can apply to this program?


A. Undergraduate transfer students at Brooklyn College.

What are the requirements to be eligible for this program?


A. To be eligible, students are required to have a 2.75 Brooklyn
College GPA and a 2.75 Transfer GPA.

What are the expectations from the faculty members?


A. The faculty members agree to mentor the students and
commit to meet regularly with their student(s).

What will the faculty members receive for their time and

effort?

What does the applicant need to submit while applying to the


program?
A. The application cover sheet.
B. A 1-2 pages long research proposal that outlines the
proposed project and plan.
C. A cover letter from the student applicant.
D. The student applicants resume (if applying as a team, then
resume and cover letter of each student applicant in the
team).

Where should the students drop off the application for this
program?
A. The students should drop off the application at the Dean
Richard Greenwalds Office, 3238 Boylan, by 5:00 PM on the
deadline date.

What does A Team Project consist of?


A. The faculty applies with a team of up to four transfer
students with a specific research project. The faculty
member writes up the proposal and the duties as part of
the application process and share this with the student(s) so
that the division of labor for each is clear.

What does Student Research Assistant consist of?


A. The faculty member appoints a student as a research
assistant. Faculty will benefit by having a student to assist
with research; student will benefit by becoming involved in

A. Tuesday, April 19, 2016.

program?

What is required of the accepted students in the program?

A. The

faculty members will also receive $350 in


research/travel money as well as V-section/independent
study workload credit.

How many forms of research projects are there for the


students to take part in?
A. There are three forms of research projects the students can
take part in, and they are:
a. A Team Project
b.Student Research Assistant
c. Independent Student Researcher

a substantial research project, developing research skills


within their particular interest, and building a mentoring
relationship with a professor. Students will submit a
research paper based on this original research and register
for an independent study V-Section with the professor.

What does Independent Student Researcher consist of?


A. A student or a group of students applies with a sponsoring
faculty member and submit a proposal and a budget for
travel or research supplies. The student(s) will be registered
in an independent study V-Section course in which they will
work on the research topic. In the proposal, students need
to demonstrate some knowledge of the topic and have
done previous research in the area. They would need to
describe how they plan to move ahead with the research
and why they need funding.

(jentin@brooklyn.cuny.edu), and Jeanne Theoharis
(jtheoharis@brooklyn.cuny.edu). They can be contacted
with any question regarding the research program and the
application process.

3114 Boylan Hall.
