Less than two years after the Army
contract was announced, Martin's
Pershing missile roared off its pad
to pass its first flight test. The project was right on schedule.
This exciting new "shoot-andscoot" solid propelled wea pon can
move up on its own all-terrain carrier or by airplane. It destroys major
targets over a wide selective range.

WORK IN THE CLIMATE OF ACHIEVEMENT

The nimble Pershing:

we don't leave
well enough alone.

76

The first Pershing tactical missile system was delivered to the Army in
1962. Since then, our Martin division
has manufactured and delivered
scores of them. The highly mobile
Pershing has performed so successfully on duty with the Army that a
major improvement effort is now under way to increase its rate of fire and
reliability.
The Pershing tactical missile system is perhaps the most remarkable
big weapon the Army has. lt consists
of a 34-foot missile with an atomic
warhead and a completely mobile
transpo1t and launching system.
Four tracked vehicles, which can
travel as fast as 40 mph, carry the missile, its portable launching pad and
fire control center, a communications
center and a power station. The specially trained Pershing crews can thus
range far and wide over extremely
rugged terrain, keeping always in
communication with their headquarters, yet avoiding enemy surveillance.
Once deployed and set up, the twostage, inertially-guided missile can be
fired in minutes over ranges of up to
400 miles. lt gives the Army a fast,
mobile nuclear capability to support
battlefield operations. Pershing is now
on duty in Europe.

Martin and the Army Missile Command led the Army-industry team
which designed and built the Pershing. lt chalked up the best tactical
missile development record ever seen
at Cape Kennedy. At the same time,
military an d industry managers
worked hard to produce an effective
missile system at the lowest possible
cost, while adhering to rigid quality
and reliability standards. Since production began in 1960, for example,
Martin has reduced its share of the
missile's cost 54 per cent.
Now, with Pershing successfully
deployed in the field, the Army has
assigned Martin to make major improvements in the missile system. A
program is under way to increase rate
of fire and reliability. lt centers on a
new mobile fire-control center and a
new erector-launcher. In a parallel
program, improved components are
being developed for the missile itself.
The improvements now planned
will permit Pershing to assume an
even greater role in support of the
Army's mission.
The several divisions of Martin Marietta
produce a broadly diversified range of produ cts, including missile systems, space
launchers, nuclear power systems, spacecraft, electronic StJstems, chemicals and construction materials. Martin Marietta Corporation, 277 Park Avenue, New York, N. Y.

Martin Marietta's commitment to

mission success continually proves itself
with systems which perform in the hostile
environs of the battlefield and deep space.
For example, Copperhead, a
cannon-launched, laser-guided artillery
shell, withstands a 9000 G muzzle blast
and unerringly finds its target.
And Pershing, the Army's most
powerful missile system, has proven
itself in more than 400.test and training
Jaunches in the last two decades.
This same dedication to mission
success translates into other programs,

among them TADS/ PNVS, Titan, the

Hellfire laser-seeker, ASALM, Pave
Penny, the Patriot missile and the Space
Shuttle extemal tank.
Uncommon systems such as theseand many others that we produce-all
have much in common: Whatever their
mission, Martin Marietta's first order of
business, and ultimate goal, is to make
themwork.
