Grant Proposal Letter of Intent: Stop Anemia in Migrants

10 February 2016
To whom it may concern:
The Stop Anemia in Migrants (SAM) seeks support for developing an
innovative program to help reduce the high prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia in
female Syrian refugees who have migrated to Hungary. We are requesting
$20,000,000 for over a two year period.
SAM has recognized that iron-deficiency anemia is the primary nutrition
concern in Syrian female refugees due to the additive factors concerning the difficult
journey to Hungary, lack of access to food, lack of familiar foods, and greater risk for
iron deficiency in female.
Goal: Reduce the prevalence of anemia among female Syrian refugees
migrating to Hungary.
Health objective: By December 2017, the incidence of the anemia in female
Syrian refugees who has migrated to Hungary will be reduced by 20%.
Behavioral objective: By December 2017, 70% of female Syrian refugees
who has migrated to Hungary will be able to add 2 iron-rich food to their diets.
SAM is a community based program that will be carried on a secondary prevention
level.
The following is our proposed intervention:
1.Check the blood status of female Syrian refugees through a blood test and
determine the prevalence of anemia among them.
2. Provide seminars about basic information on iron-deficiency
anemia, including the causes and symptoms of anemia, the outcomes of anemia,
and how to prevent anemia.
3.Provide information about identifying iron-rich food, teach them how to
increase iron consumption in their diets with low cost, and teach them how to
incorporate iron rich foods available in Hungary in Syrian cuisine.
4.Provide iron supplements and iron-rich food.
5.Check their blood status again, monitor and evaluate the program.
The general timeline of SAM:
- Start - April, 2016: Check the blood status for all female Syrian refugees to
define who has anemia. Calculate prevalence of anemia
- July-August, 2016 - Teach female Syrian refugees information about
anemia. Provide them iron supplements and rich-iron foods.
- Follow up 14 months.
- October, 2017- check the blood value again

- December, 2017 - calculate prevalence of anemia again and conclude the

intervention
After two years, SAM strives to achieve the following outcomes:
1. The prevalence of anemia among female Syrian refugees decreases.
2. The incidence of anemia among female Syrian refugees decreases.
3. Female Syrian refugees are able to recognize and add iron-rich food in their daily
meals.
The total budget required for SAM is $20,000,000 and are allocated on:
1. Blood Tests - $3,000,000
2. 3 Executive Directors Salaries- $85,000/year/person for two years - $510,000
3. Iron Supplements - $5,000,000
4. Iron rich/fortified food - $8,000,000
5. Booklets/handout - $1,490,000
6. Seminars - $2,000,000
We appreciate your time in reading this letter of intent, and we hope, with your
support, SAM will be able to enhance the lives of female Syrian refugees. We intend
to submit a full proposal with additional information in the near future.
Sincerely,
