Mediterranean,itwasgreat.Sailingships,whiletheycouldbelessreliableintermsofspeed
wherewindwasunreliable(and,whilenotheldhostagebytheprevailingwinds,theprevailing
windsplayedahugeroleininfluencingtheirspeed),packedmorestoresandcouldmore
reliablycrossgreatdistances.Combinationshipswereshipsthatcoulduseeithersailsoroars
topropelthemselves.Whilebasicallyeverygalleyhadasail,theywerentreallysailpowered
theirspeedcamemostlyfromoars.Bythelate16thcenturyweseethattrendbegintochange
withtheintroductionofthegalleass(whichwasclosertoacombinationship).Galleasseswere
alsoagreatdealmoreseaworthythangalleys:afewaccompaniedtheSpanishArmadain
1588,havingproventheirusein1571atLepanto.Bythe17thcenturyitwasprettyclearthat
sailingships,byvirtueofcannons,hadeclipsedgalleys.

Buthowfastwerethey?Assumingidealconditions(favorablewinds,askilledcrew,etc.),a
sailingshipcouldaveragearound6knotsoveratrip.Thattranslatesto168milesperday,
assumingsailingdayandnight(itwasntuncommontojuststopsailingatnight,especiallyin
unfamiliarwatersornearcoastlines).Asaruleofthumb,sailingatlessthan3.5knotstypically
meantashipwassailingwithunfavorablewinds(tackingintothewindisaslow,laborious
process).Butthequalityofacrewisalsoaratherlargeinfluence.Lessexperiencedcrewswill
tendtosailmoreslowlysimplybecausetheylacktheexperiencenecessarytomakethekinds
ofrapidadjustmentsnecessarytokeepasailingshipgoingattopspeed.

Galleyspeedsareeventougher.Galleyscouldmaintainamodestpaceortheycouldeffectively
sprintattheirtarget(thiswasespeciallycommoninancientwarfarewhentheyhadrams
sprintsatupto12knotswerententirelyoutofthequestion).But,forthemostpart,youcould
probablyexpecttogetabout3knotsoutofthemonareliablebasis.Shipsthatwerecrewedby
professionalrowers(likethoseemployedbyVenetiangalleys)aremorelikelytoreachhigher
andmoreconsistentspeedsthanshipscrewedlargelybyslaves(ie,mostgalleys).Ofcourse,
professionalrowersarealotmoreexpensivethanslaves.

Riverscomplicatethemath.Theydonthaveconsistentspeeds.Agoodruleofthumbis3
knots.Butthisisntconsistentitspossibletosailalongtheinsidecurveoftheriver,wherethe
currentisweaker,butthatismoredifficultwithdraft(howfardownintothewatertheship
extends).Sailingshipstendtohavegreaterdraftthanoarpoweredships.

Asforprevailingwinds:thatsabittougherbutmorebecauseofgeographythananythingelse.
IfWesterosworldisroughlythesamesizeasEarth,andassumingtheequatorislocatedsouth
ofDorne(orinsouthernDorne),thentheprevailingwindswouldblowfromeasttowest

(easterlies)southoftheNeckandfromwesttoeast(westerlies)northoftheNeck.Iwouldnt
weightthesemorethanoneknoteitherway.

Inthecaseofshipslikecogs(sailingshipsthatarelargelyusedtomovestuffaround),Id
expectthemtomoveslowlycomparedtoeverythingelse.Thosekindsofshipsarebuiltforhold
space,notforspeed.

So,tosummarize:~5knotsforsailingshipsand3knotsforcogsandgalleys.Longshipswould
probablyconsistentlyexceed6knots(theNorseweresupposedlyabletosailtoNorwayfrom
Icelandin3days,whichwouldsuggestanaveragespeedof8knots)callit~7knots.Rivers
wouldfunctiontoincreaseordecreaseashipsspeedby~2knots.

HOWLONGTOTRAVELBYLAND
Letsgetthisoutoftheway:horsesarenotmotorcycles.Ifyoukeepyourhorseatthegallopall
day,itwillbedeadbylunchtimeandthenyourestuckwalking.Themainbenefitofhavinga
horsewhenyoutravelisthatyoudonthavetowalk.Or,ifyourehaulingstuff,thebenefitisthat
ithaulsthestuffforyou.Horsesdontmagicallymakeyoutravelfasterunlessyouretraveling
shorterdistancesoryouvegotarelaystation(likethePonyExpress)orhavehalfadozen
sparemounts(liketheMongols).

Horseornot,theaveragetravelspeedforsomeonenotladendownwithpackanimalsor
wagonsorthelikeisabout3milesperhouroverthecourseofperhaps8hours(remember,
youvegottostopforeverythingfromtakingaleaktocookingdinner).Alordandhisescort
couldprobablymatchthatpacewithouttoomuchtrouble(andpossiblypushanaverageof4
mphwhenalternatinghorsesbetweenthewalkandtrot).

Armies,ontheotherhand,werenotoriouslyslow.TheOttomanskeptextremelydetailed
recordsoftheircampaigns.Inthecaseofthe1663campaigntoHungary,theOttomanarmy
spent52daysmarching(foratotalof231hoursatthemarch)and67daysatrest(119days
total).Inthecaseofa1638campaigninMesopotamia,theOttomanarmyspent121daysat
march(544hoursatthemarch)and76daysatrest(197daystotal).Inthecasesofthe1663
campaign,theOttomansaveraged4.44hoursatthemarchwhentheywereactuallymovingin
thecaseofthe1638campaign,theyaveraged4.49hoursatthemarchwhentheywereactually
moving.Giventheremarkablydisparatetypography,itssafetosaythat4.44.5hoursatmarch
wasreasonablyconsistentovermostpremodernarmiesthatweremarching
throughfriendly
territorywithprepositionedsupplypoints
.TheOttomanshadsupplydepotseverythree
leagues,afterall,andthatmeantthattheirsupplytraincouldbeshortersinceitwouldntneedto

Whilethereareafewexamplesofarmiesreachingfasterspeeds(VegetiussaystheRoman
legionscouldmarch20milesin5hours,whichsuggestsanaveragespeedof4mphbutthats
thesupposedrate,nottheactualrateobtained),thesetendtobeveryspecificexamplesthat
dontgiveagoodideaofhowlongittookarmiestogetplaces.

TatarauxiliariesinOttomancampaigns,whofamouslyhadlotsofsparemounts,achieved
basicallythesamespeedperhourbutcouldstayonthemarchfor12hours.
