Winning Cultists to Christ

PUBLISHERS NOTE
The

writer has given a candid, careful, correct and

comprehensive exposure, without malice to anyone,
of the errors of the dangerous and popular cults. He
sharply and effectively combats the true inward nature
and fallacies of their heretical teachings.
In the question of their beliefs and practices the
book is a complete and comprehensive antidote to
these cults. The questions relating to their doctrines
are exhaustively discussed.
If this little book helps to rescue just one soul from
the clutches of the cults the publisher is rewarded.
Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheeps
clothing but inwardly they are ravenous wolves (Matt. 7:15).
For I know this that after my departure savage wolves
will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from your
selves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away
the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, an remember that
for these three years I did not cease to warn everyone night
and day with tears (Acts 20:29-31).
That we should no longer be children tossed to and fro
and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery
of men, in the cunning craftiness by which they lie in wait to
deceive (Ephes. 4:14).

PREFACE
I

have always felt that in Spirit and tendency the

Seventh Day Adventists and Jehovahs Witnesses are
contrary to the Gospel. These were the two main cult
groups that existed in South India where I grew up.
Later I came across and even confronted the other
cultist groups that are listed in this study resource.
After careful study and prolonged investigations,
I realized that cults and heresies are modern delusions
or systems of errors from propagated by their
founding fathers and continuing to spread till this day.
Unfortunately, all these cult-initiating leaders have
mixed their own false doctrines with the correct
teachings of the Bible - thus deceiving many innocent
Christians into believing that their new-found teachings
are the correct ones. This mixing of Biblical truth and
man-made error is found in all the cultist groups that
are dealt with in this handbook.
Many of the persuasive arguments that disciples of
the cults put forth takes scripture verses referring
to signs of the times - out of context. This often
is appeals to the emotions and concerns of young
Christians who are baffled at the natural calamities and
war-like events happening in their time.
From my early adolescence I became acquainted
with the cultists who frequented our home to argue
:4:

Winning Cultists to Christ

with my father, the late Evangelist C.V. George. Their

arguments and the answers my Dad gave them
prepared me to confront what they refute or what
they refuse to accept. They believe they have the right
key to the prophecies and that theirs is the correct
interpretations, with no chance of any mistake. They
consider themselves as the victims of oppression from
various churches and governments. They emphasize
their call to suffering persecution in their writing,
teaching and preaching.
Each, in their strange doctrines, alienate themselves
from the social, economic, religious concerns of the
world around them - which is doomed to total
annihilation.
Their interpretations of the Scripture, especially
those that refer to End Time Events, are without
proof. The history and development of Christianity, the
history and development of human civilization, and the
voice of present day society are opposed to these
interpretations.
In religious matters, one expects to find progress
and development of religious freedom, history of
persecutions, the spirit of the age and the country.
However, cults take a low opinion of human nature
and isolate themselves while the opinions of the public
on current issues and the general tendency of human
civilization progress in the opposite direction.
So, more and more people are being deceived
in the name of religion. Youths comingfrom broken
:5:

homes with poor, shabby self-image are easily

convinced by the false doctrines of the cults. Young
men and women who faced disappointments in love
affairs, those who are victims of sexual perversions,
and those who are disappointed in established
churches because of neglect they experienced - each
of these are often easy prey for the cultists.
In Matthew Chapter 24 Jesus foretold the decline
and apostasy as signs of the last days. The Bible
warned us about the False Christs, false prophets and
false teachers. Jesus warned His disciples about the
serious Denials of the end times:

Denial of God and the Savior (Jude 4).

Denial of the Deity of Jesus Christ (2 John 7-11).

Denial of the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh

(1 John 4:3).

Denial of Christs atonement (2 Peter 2:1).

Denial of the power of godliness (2 Tim. 3:1-5).

Denial of Sound Doctrine (2 Tim. 4:3,4).

Denial of Authority (Jude 8).

These prophesiesrefer not toto heathenism, or

other religions, but to cults arising from Christendom.
A few of these cults and their founders, or most
notorious propagators, are noted below. These
represent a rise of deceivers who depart from the
true Biblical Faith:

There is a mastermind behind every founder and

leader of a cults or heresy. Satan himself - the deceiver
(2 Cor. 11:13,14). Well experiencedin human nature,
his main objective is to divert man from the atoning
work of Christ. Instead, through cults, Satanpresents
religions that exhorts man to be good, kind, socioreligious activists. To this end, heutilizes a syncretic
system of belief - selecting whatever is best in other
faiths and illogically compromising them. He leads
people away from recognizing Christ, the savior of the
world, to reject the so great a salvation wrought by
Christs redemptive work on Calvary.
Christians need to know their Bible. There is a
crying need for revealing these erroneous beliefs in
the searchlight of Gods Word so as to release men
and women entangled in the web of false doctrines.
This book, though arranged to give only useful
facts about cults and heresies, completely covers the

seven most damaging cults prevalent in Christendom.

Besides, the reader may find some writings slightly
adapted to give clearer light upon the way false
teachings creep into the church. The chapters ahead
were written to serve as a guide book to Christian
workers as well as teachers and students in Theological
Institutions.
With hope and prayers that this book will aid
Christian workers to win cultists to Christ and serve
as a helpful reference for Bible Colleges, I do present
this study manual, for the glory of God and expansion
of His Kingdom.

age. I have great news for people who are not
interested in reading big books. This book by
Dr. C.V. John about various cults in the world would
bring the benefit of reading eleven books. I call this
book a mini encyclopedia of cults although it contains
only less than 200 pages. One unique thing about this
work is that it gives a comprehensive and cogent
description of the Eastern Cults such as Astrology,
New Age Movement and Yoga.
Dr. C.V. John is a prominent global preacher of the
Gospel of Lord Jesus Christ. He spent most of his
young life in the remote North Eastern part of India.
He adopted the life-style of the tribal people and
endured physical deprivation for the Kingdom of God.
God used him to proclaim the Gospel throughout the
world for many years. He is the most qualified person
to write this book because he has dealt with numerous
cults in his day today life. Most of his knowledge
did not come from other books but from his own
personal experience debating with different cults.
He hails from a family of preachers and apologists.
His grandfather was one of the founders of the
Ezhumattoor Brethren Assembly in Kerala, India. As a
child I used to listen to his sermons and testimonies
every week. His preaching also helped to shape and

formulates my Christian life. C.Vs father, known as

Evangelist C.V. George was an eloquent and scintillating
speaker, an outstanding Bible teacher and an invincible
debater.
Different cults existed from the early history of
man. There are more than 3000 cults existing in
America alone. Cults flourished during periods of social
and political upheavals. Cults were prevalent after the
fall of Rome, during the French Revolution, and in
England during the Industrial Revolution. Cults arose
in japan after Second World War and in Eastern
Europe after the fall of Communism. Some abnormal
circumstances in life make people more vulnerable to
cult recruitment and they include loneliness, broken
relationships, economic and financial problems. These
situations create the desire for quick simple solutions.
Cults provide various solutions which are accompanied
by structure, authority and close social contacts,
elements that people needed and which most of us
take for granted in the course of our everyday lives.
We may think, how could anyone fall for that and
why do they believe such lies? How could they have
been conned like that?
On November 18, 1978, Jim Jones and more than
900 members of his People Temple committed mass
suicide in the jungle of Guyana. Joness followers drank
cyanide - laced Kool - Aid to commit suicide. He
attracted educated and uneducated people, Whites,
Blacks, Jews and the rich and the poor to his cult.
: 10 :

On March 26, 1997, 39 members of the Heavens

Gate cult had committed mass suicide, believing their
souls would be transported to a spaceship trailing the
Hale - Bopp comet.
While writing this today October 15, 2015 I read
a news from Associated press about the death of a
teen by the teens own parents. Two teenage brothers
were brutally beaten in church - one fatally in an effort
by their parents, sister and other members to get them
to confess their sins, police said Wednesday in a case
involving an insular congregation that had sparked
gossip and suspicion among neighbors.
Today hundreds of similar incidents are happening
throughout the world.
The cult recruiters have some common behaviors.
They are excessively friendly at first sight. But true
friendship takes time to build.
They will invite you for free meals, lectures and
workshops.
They will pressure you to do something you dont
really want to do.
Those People may seem just like you. This
manipulation technique is to disarm your vigilance.
They promise swift solutions to difficult problems.
There are hidden persuaders all around us in our life.
If you are not rooted and grounded in the Word of
God, the enemy is going to destroy your true identity.
Today, more than ever, we need the insight of a
: 11 :

learned Christian, master apologist, and theologian like

Dr. C.V. John to guide us in cult evangelism. This work
epitomizes the best in cult apologetics. This work
includes the best contemporary information about the
onslaught of the cults around the world. Today cultism
would have a devastating impact on the Church. The
line of demarcation between the cults and Church
is being blurred and in some groups it is being
obliterated. Today Cultists use Christian terminology
while pouring their own meaning into the words, even
fooling many evangelists. But this work by brother
C.V. John is an answer to the problems created by
various cults. I recommend this book with prayers.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
In

the past 5 decades of my ministry as a Bible

teacher, I had to confront leaders and followers of
various cultist groups, here in India and overseas. One
of the most eye - opening time was my four times
discussions with the leaders of Mormonism in Virginia,
USA who happened to be the immediate neighbors of
my children.
I was also contacted by several evangelists and
Christian workers of evangelical faith who requested
me to write booklets on some of these cults, they
could use for immediate reference while facing the
misled cult followers and sold-out leaders. This book
is the outcome of these requests and my altercation
with the cultist leaders.
Seven Cults and 4 eastern philosophies are included
in this volume. I have included the eastern philosophy
because that is the root for some cultist cults. My
intention is to print booklets separately on each of
these heretic groups for Christian workers to carry in
their pocket.
I do thank all my partners in the global mission for
the Lord, who challenged, encouraged and inspired me
to write this handbook.
: 13 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

I am indebted to many authors whose books I

was able to refer. I do appreciate all Christian workers
who spent time with me discussing these topics and
giving me their valuable thoughts.
I am thankful to Mr. J.G. Paul, my partner in
Christian Missions for the past 3 decades for helping
me in organizing these pages in a logical order and
also preparing charts that simplify the each topic for
readers.
My thanks to my son-in-law, Mr. Randolph
Forrester King for doing the proof reading and make
it presentable to the esteemed readers.
Thanks to Ebenezer Printers for producing this
volume in attractive form with appealing cover design
and easy to read fonts.

DEDICATION
This

book is gratefully dedicated to the memory

of my beloved father Mr. C.V. George, Evangelist who
was one of the most well-known Christian Apologists,
church planter, author and great exponent of the
scriptures.

I have esteemed him as my model preacher.

I have dreamed to become an apologist and

debater like him.

I was taught faith-life by his life-example.

I had the privilege to listen to his live debates

refuting the fallacies of the cultists.

God, in His grace allowed me to follow the footsteps of my father

I do dedicate this book in thankfulness to God

for letting be born, nurtured and raised in a spiritually
gorgeous environment supervised by my beloved
father. This book will ever remain as a well-earned
legacy of my cherished father who lived and defended
the faith for six decades.
All glory belongs to my precious savior and Lord
Jesus Christ, who chose me and put me into His
glorious ministry to Declare and Defend the Gospel.

Winning Cultists to Christ

INTRODUCTION
Winning Cultists to Christ
What is a cult?
A cult is a religious group or movement which
misrepresents, misinterprets and distorts the central
message of Christianity.
A cult is different from a religion. A religion is a
system of faith and worship; it involves a world-and
life-view. Religion is a lifestyle. A religious man tries to
live a lifestyle harmoniously with the power or powers
he believes control the world.
A cult is a deviation from a world religion. It denies,
misinterprets or perverts the orthodox creeds of faith
of a religion. Most of the cults are deviations from
historic and Biblical Christianity.
Cults claim the support of Christ and the Bible.
Cults contain elements of truth and error. It is difficult
to identify cults because they claim Bible as their
foundation and they hide their beliefs that are contrary
to the Holy Bible. Untrained Christians often mistake
some cultists as evangelicals.
There are two layers of people in every cult. The
top leaders are the deceivers. They are not open to
changing their stand. The lower layer is the deceived.
: 17 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

They are the followers. It is our responsibility to

witness to them and lead them to Jesus Christ for their
salvation.
Therefore, this article is not written to ridicule the
cults. It is written to help Christians know what the
cults believe. That will enable us to witness more
effectively to those entrapped in cults. Our aim is not
debate. Our passion is to declare the Gospel and pull
the deceived out of heresies. Our calling is to lovingly
and yet uncompromisingly bring Biblical truths to
persuade them.
How to identify a cult?
The four basic operations of math, when applied
in the following manner to any religious group, will aid
Christians in detecting errors which characterize a cult.
1. + Addition + : They add something to the Word
of God. In other words, the Bible alone is not the
source of authority. This extra-Biblical revelation
can be the books or visions of an individual or a
group.
2. - Subtraction - : Cults often subtract from the
person of the Lord Jesus Christ. They make Him
less God or inferior to the Father. They Deify
man (often the founder of the cult) or the group
and humanize Jesus Christ.
3. x Multiplication x : Cults multiply the requirements
for salvation. Often they give a list of works
necessary to complete salvation. They preach a
: 18 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

gospel of Faith + Works for Salvation. But Biblical

Christianity preaches that faith gives salvation and
true faith produce works.
4. Division : Cults try to divide the loyalty of
their members between God and the cult or its
leader. They often focus on devotion to their leader
or group.
Ignorance about the traits of cults will mislead the
Christian to label a cult as evangelical. Careful study of
this paper with open mind will help Christians to
safeguard against heretics.
Characteristics to identify cults:
1. Extra-Biblical Revelation: The leader or selected
people claim special insights, visions and revelations
over and above the Bible. This is used to intimidate
and manipulate followers into conformity.
2. Devaluation of Christ: Cults oppose His deity and
make Him inferior to God the Father.
3. Denial of justification by grace alone: Cults
always add something else as a requirement for
salvation.
4. Exclusivity: Cults proclaim that their follower alone
will be saved. They are the central community in
Eschatology.
5. Elitism: Cults believe all other groups are inferior,
apostate or false.
: 19 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

6. Information control: Cult leaders decide what cult

members should read, know or believe.
7. Authoritarianism: Disagreeing with the cult leader
is disagreeing with God.
8. Submission: Cult followers must address the leader
with special titles.
9. Guilt Ride: Cult leaders develop instill guilty
feelings among their followers if they disregard the
group or leader.
10. Intimidation tactics: Cult leaders scare their
followers with threatened bad consequences if they
disobey cult leaders.
11. No individuality or personal liberty: Cult
followers are often brainwashed by the cult leader.
12. Conformity: Cults often strictly regulate the type
of dress, style of clothing or lifestyle permitted for
their followers.
13. Charismatic leader: Cults often focus on their
leader, not on Jesus Christ alone.
14. No accountability for the leader: The cult leader
does not have to listen to any other.
15. Financial exploitation: Cult leaders often highly
emphasize finances. All followers are to give tithes
and sacrificial contributions. Meanwhile, the leader
has no financial accountability.
: 20 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

16. Isolation: Cult followers are asked to separate from

others in their lives including family and friends.
Faithfulness to the group is sacred.
17. Legalism: Cults often demand that new members
work hard to get the approval of the group.
18. Unrealized hopes: Cults often feature prophecies
of second coming, healing, revival, blessings, etc.
Though unfulfilled, these entice people to the sect
just like gambling or addiction.
19. No assurance of salvation: Cult leaders are
evasive when asked about their New Birth in Christ.

Clarification of Cults
1. Bringing New Truth:
Bringing new truths previously unrevealed, which
supersede or contradict prior revelations.
They claim they have something more than just
the Bible and its inadequate message.
They give no choice of testing their teachings
and practices, but assert strongly that their
exclusivity proves their anointing by God.
2. Scripture interpreted differently:
Claim extra-Biblical revelations.
Claim they alone interpret the mysteries in the
Bible.
: 21 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Interpret scriptures unreasonably and out of

context to justify their peculiar doctrine.
Interpretations based on the belief that popular
church teachings and practices are of paganism,
human reasoning and custom, not the Bible.
3. Source of Authority:
Non-Biblical authority - sacred writings that
supersede the Bible.
Believe the Bible is not truly the final authority
because:
- Mormons believe Bible has been changed,
corrupted and misinterpreted.
- Christian Scientists believe the Bible is mistaken,
corrupt and inferior.
- Unification Church believes Bible is incomplete.
- Many cultists claim the final authority is the
Bible as interpreted by their cult leader.
4. False teaching about the person of Jesus Christ:
Jesus as described by the cults is not He who is
revealed in the scripture, it is always someone
less (2 Cor. 11:4) than the Bibles eternal God
who became flesh.
To the Jehovahs Witnesses, Christ did not exist
as God from all eternity.
To the Mormons, Jesus is the first-born spirit
child one of the gods, brother of Lucifer.
: 22 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

All cults deny the deity of Jesus Christ.

5. Attack orthodox Christianity:
Cultists argue that the Church has departed from
the true faith. Helena P. Blavatsky, the founder of
modern Theosophy said, Christianity is now the
religion of arrogance, par excellence, stepping stone for
ambition, a sinecure for wealth, shame, power; a convenient
screen for hypocrisy.
6. Two-aced:
Cult leaders often call themselves Christians but
they deny the fundamentals of Faith.
Cults may act like they are another denomination
of Christianity, but their internal teachings
disagree with the Scripture.
7. Outright denial of Trinity:
Cults have an inadequate view of the Holy Trinity.
They may attack the Biblical doctrine of Trinity
as pagan or Satanic in origin.
Cults often deviate from the doctrine of the
triune God, (a common belief in ancient
religions) and the nature of God.
8. No sure foundation for their theology:
Cult doctrines change frequently or are
contradicted by further revelations.
Cults learn a doctrine to change a doctrine.
: 23 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Beliefs and practices once enforced may be

prohibited later.
9. Strong central leadership:
Cults consider their leaders as messengers of God
with special freedom and access to God.
Through this direct relationship to God, the
leader dictates the theology and behavior of the
cult.
The leader exercises enormous influence and
power over the group.
For belief, behavior and lifestyle, the cult members
depend totally upon their leader.
10. Salvation by works:
The Gospel of the grace of God is totally absent.
Often cults teach believe in Jesus Christ but
do this or follow that for salvation.
Always attach something to the doctrine of
salvation.
Salvation is a process not just of accepting
Christ but with works.
11. False predictions:
Cult teachers make bold predictions of future
events allegedly as revealed to them by the
inspiration of God. When none of these events
come to pass they are exposed as false prophets.
: 24 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Christians must beware of any group which

possess any of these characteristics and should fight
a good fight of faith, as the Apostle Paul did.
Why are cults growing in number?
1. Instead of emphasizing preaching and worship,
many cults stress teaching and training every
member to be a missionary of the movement.
2. Often members are expected to do door-to-door
visitation, sharing and witnessing.
3. Prospective members frequently are given much
personal attention through friendship, fellowship
and home Bible classes.
4. Cult literature is made available in massive quantities
with attractive formats and at very affordable costs.
5. Cults often use mass media for propaganda and
contacts.
6. Cults frequently run very effective correspondence
courses.
7. Many cults run excellent educational institutions,
offering good education and drawing people.
8. Often tithing and sacrificial giving is mandatory.
9. Many cults are sensitive to universal human needs
and social concern. They often operate excellent
charity organizations.
10. Cults exploit the spiritual vacuum, hypocrisy and
lethargy in churches. The ignorance of churches
: 25 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

about the cults enhances the growth of cults.

When the Christians retreat the cults advance.
Bible has spoken clearly about cults (Matt. 7:15-23,
24:5; 1 John 2:18-19, 4:1-3; 2 Peter 2:1-2, 3:16-17;
1 Tim. 4:1-3; 2 Cor. 11:13-15).
How should Christians respond to the cults?
1. Christians should be taught to know the real so
that they will easily identify counterfeit.
2. More churches should conduct special seminars
and classes on the cults. This would prepare more
Christians to answer the questions of the cults
(2 Tim. 2:15,24-25).
3. We need more good literature that clearly refutes
the heresies of cults.
4. Train more Christians to ask questions the cultists
cannot answer. Especially theological questions
about God, Trinity, Jesus Christ, Bible, Salvation,
Eschatology, etc.
5. Encourage believers to enthusiastic evangelize.
6. Patiently, prayerfully and lovingly counsel the
followers of a cult. These are the DECEIVED
(2 Tim. 2:24-26). Do not encourage or entertain
the leaders and teachers of a cult. These are the
DECEIVERS (2 John 9-11).

JEHOVAHS WITNESS
Introduction:
Jehovahs Witnesses claim they are Christians. This
article aims to prove they belong to a cultist group
promoting several heresies. Our goal is not to ridicule
or insult them. Our desire is not to argue with them.
Our sincere passion is to witness to them and win
them to Jesus Christ, for their salvation. Our hope is
to equip every Christian for witnessing to Jehovahs
Witness followers.
History:
Charles Taze Russell, the founder of Jehovahs
Witnesses, was born on February 16, 1852 in
Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in the USA. He grew up in the
Seventh Day Adventists. Its founder Ellen G. White
and leader William Miller predicted that Jesus would
return in 1843. But He did not come. Then the date
was postponed until 1844. Christ did not come. Again
a new date was set for 1874. Because He did not
come even in 1874, Russell and his friends began to
clarify that Jesus Christ came spiritually and He will
take the saints after 3 years. But that also did not
happen.
: 29 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Russell left the Seventh Day Adventists and started

Jehovahs Witness. Zion Watchtower Magazine
became the official advocate for Jehovahs Witness
doctrinal position in 1878. Watch Tower Bible and
Tract Society was formed. Because their peculiar
doctrines and heresies could not be proved by the
Bible, they printed their own New World Translation
Bible. To suit their doctrinal position, this Bible is used
(NWT).
In later years Russell had many legal battles with the
government. He also divorced his wife and did not
maintain a good testimony.

Jehovas Witness false beliefs

contrasted to the Christian Position
Bible:

Jehovahs Witness: They follow their own NWT

Bible. In the New Testament they have used the
Hebrew word Jehovah for God instead of using
the correct Greek Word Kurios (Lord) for Jesus
Christ. It is mistranslation. Jehovahs Witnesses
argue that the Bible can be understood only by
the interpretation of Watch Tower Society. The
Bible is the word of God. But its interpretation is
decided by the decision making is Jehovahs
Witnesses.

Christian Position: Adding, changing or taking

away any part of the Bible is serious sin (Rev.
22:18,19).
: 30 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Trinity:

Jehovahs Witness: Three gods in one.

Christian Position: Trinity. One God revealed in

three persons - Father, Son, Holy Spirit (John
14:9-12, 16:8-13; Matt: 3:16,17; Acts 5:3,5; 1 Cor.
16:19; Eph. 4:30).

Diety of Christ:

Jehovahs Witness: A god mighty, but not

almighty. First and the best of Gods creation.
So he is Gods son, but he is inferior to God
(Matt. 3:17, John 8:42, 14:28, 20:17 and 1 Cor. 11:3,
15:28).

Christian Position: Gods Son is not an angel. He

is God. Angels were commanded to worship the
Son. The Father says the throne of the Son is
forever. Father calls Him KURIOS (Greek) which
means the Son is the ruler and possessor of all
things (Isa. 9:6; Zech. 12:10; Micah 5:2; Rev. 1:7;
John 19:34,35; Heb. 1:5-14).

Death of Christ:

Jehovahs Witness: Christ died on a stake, not on

a cross (Gal. 3:13; Acts 5:30).

Christian Position: A number of verses state that

Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross (Matt. 27:40,42;
Mark 15:30,32; John 19:17,19,25,31; 1 Cor. 1:17,18;
Gal. 5:11, 6:12,14; Eph. 2:16; Phil. 2:8, 3:18; Col.
1:20, 2:14; Heb. 12:2). There is a rebuke against
: 31 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

those who deny the cross of Christ. We are asked

to preach the Cross and be proud of the cross of
Christ.
Atonement:

Jehovahs Witness: Christs human life was paid as

a ransom for the obedient humans.

Christian Position: Christ tasted death for

everyone (Heb. 2:9).

Resurrection of Christ:

Jehovahs Witness: Christ was raised from the

dead as an immortal spirit person (1 Peter 3:18;
Rom. 6:9; Rev. 1:17,18).

Christian Position: Jesus Christ rose again from

the dead with a physical body (Luke 24:39).

Return of Christ:

Jehovahs Witness: The return of Christ took

place in 1914. No eye can see him. His presence
is spiritual.

Christian Position: Christ will come bodily. Every

eye shall see Him. Nobody can fix the date of His
return (Matt. 24:30,31; Acts 1:9-11; Zech. 12:4,10;
Rev. 1:7).

Holy Spirit:

Jehovahs Witness: The Holy Spirit is not a

person but a force. The Holy Spirit is not God.
: 32 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Christian Position: The Holy Spirit is the third

person of the Trinity. He is not a mere force, but
a real person. Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit
are equal to the Father (God) in essence, but
subordinate in operation. The Holy Spirit has all
the characteristics of a person and all the attributes
of God. He has emotions (2 Cor. 3:17; Acts 5:3,5).

Death:

Jehovahs Witness: Death is the end. The grave

is hell. The soul does not exist after death. There
is only a state of unconsciousness. Human life stops
when breath stops, like animal life (John 11:11-14;
Psalm 6:5, 146:4; Eccl. 9:10).

Christian Position: The soul is fully conscious after

death. The story of the rich man and Lazarus and
the words of the Apostle Paul (Luke 16:19-35; Rev.
6:9-11, 15:1-3; John 14:1-4). Stephen and Paul were
sure of their meeting the Lord and living together
consciously after death (Acts 7:56; Phil. 1:21-24).

Hell:

Jehovahs Witness: There is no place called hell.

The grave is the end. There is no place for
punishment. There is no existence after death.
Dead ones are recreated at resurrection (Matt.
25:41-46; 2 Thess. 1:6-9).

Christian Position: There is literal fire, torment,

memories, weeping and gnashing of teeth in hell
and it is for eternity (Luke 16:19-35; Rev. 14:9-11).
: 33 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Earth:
Jehovahs Witness: Earth will never be destroyed
or depopulated (Eccl. 1:4; Isa. 45:18; Ps. 78:69).
Christian Position: The present earth will be
burnt. It will be purified by fire. There will be a
new heaven and new earth (Rev. 21:1, 20:11;
2 Peter 3:10-13; Rom. 8:19-23). This present earth
is polluted by the sins of humanity. It is under the
curse because of mans sin. The earth is waiting
and groaning for the day of redemption that will
take place when Christ comes again.
144,000 chosen ones to Heaven:
Jehovahs Witness: Heaven is limited to 144,000
individuals of the Jehovahs Witnesses. These
individuals are called before 1935. They include
male, female; married, unmarried; and also children.
They include non-Jews also. Some of them may be
alive even today, about 8,000. The other believers
of Jehovahs Witness will be part of the great
crowd who will occupy paradise earth.
Christian Position: The 144,000 are Jews from the
12 tribes of Israel. They are virgin males only with no
deceit found in their mouths (Rev. 14:1-5, 7:3-8).

Questions to ask the Jehovahs Witness,

to which they will have no answer:
Allow them to base all questions and answers on
the Bible translated by them, New World Translation
(NWT).
: 34 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

1. In what sense John the Baptist was the forerunner

of Jehovah? Why did Jehovah need a forerunner?
(Matt. 3:3; Mark 1:3; Luke 3:4; John 1:23). [New
World translation mistranslates Kurios as Jehovah
instead of LORD.] Why dont you recognize that
Jesus Christ is called Jehovah? [Is this another
question?]
2. If Jesus is an angelic creature who became a man
to die and to become a glorified spirit, how can
He be the same yesterday today and forever? (Heb:
13:8). God never said to any angel, though art my
son (Heb. 1:5).
3. How can Jesus be a god in the light of Isaiah
43:10,11?
4. Jehovah will not share His glory with any created
being (Isa. 42:8, 48:11). How then could the Lord
Jesus Christ ask the Father Glorify thou me
alongside yourself with the glory that I had along
side you before the world was? (John 17:5). How
could Peter ascribe glory to Christ? (2 Peter 3:18).
How could angels, Elders and living creatures
ascribe glory to the Lord Jesus? (Rev. 5:12). How
can Jesus return to the glory of His father? (Matt.
16:27).
5. How can Jehovah refer to Himself as pierced?
(Zech. 12:10; Rev. 1:7).
6. How can Jehovah and Jesus reveal themselves in
the same name I AM? (Exo. 13:14; John 8:58,
18:5-6,8).
: 35 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

7. If Jesus was just a man or angel why did He accept

worship from man (Matt. 2:2, 8:11, 14:33, 15:25,
28:9,17, Mark 5:6, 15:19; Luke 24:52; John 9:38).
8. Why did God say Let all the angels of God
worship Him/Christ? (Heb. 1:6).
9. Isaiah 6:1-10 speaks of Jehovah. John 12:37-41
refers to the same passage and applies it to Jesus
Christ. Why do you refuse to recognize Jesus is
Jehovah?
10. How can both Jehovah and Jesus be called First
and the Last? (Isa. 41:4, 44:6, 48:12; Rev. 1:11-17;
2:8, 22:13).
11. In the light of Acts 4:12, are we saved in the name
of Jesus or in the name of Jehovah?
12. What happened to the body of Christ? Ask for
the scriptural reference to back up the Watchtower
claim that His body was dissolved into gasses or
it is being preserved as a great memorial.
13. If Jesus Christ is not God, why did He not correct
Thomas when Thomas addressed Him as, My
Lord and my God? (Matt. 20:28).
14. There are 120 Old Testament references to
Jehovah quoted in the New Testament as applied
to Jesus Christ. How can Jehovahs Witnesses claim
Jesus Christ is not God? How can Jesus Christ be
inferior to God?
15. Were the early Christians witnesses of Jehovah or
witnesses of Jesus Christ? (Acts 1:8; 1 Cor. 15:1-4;
Rom. 10:9, Acts 2:32, 3:15, 4:33, 13:30,31).
: 36 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

16. Jehovahs Witnesses started in 1874. Prior to that,

did God have no true representative on earth?
For the 90 generations between then and Christs
resurrection, did God not care for humanity?
(Matt. 28:18-20).
17. The Holy Spirit, Paul and Jesus address God as
Father nine times, never as Jehovah. Should not we
call Him Father? (Matt. 6:9, 11:25, 26:39,42; Mark
14:36; Luke 10:21, 22:42, 23:14, 17:1; Rom. 8:15;
Gal. 4:6).
18. What is your explanation of the many failed
Jehovahs Witness prophecies, especially the dates
that you had fixed for the return of Christ? Do
these false prophesies not prove that they were the
work of false prophets? (Deut. 18:20-22).
When their prophecy failed, they spiritualized the
return of Christ.
Jehovahs Witness is a cult, having many heresies
listed above. The most heretical teachings are: Jesus is
not God, The Holy Spirit is not God, Christ will not
return bodily, The soul has no existence after death,
There is no Hell and only 144,000 Jehovahs Witnesses
will go to heaven.

Doctrines of Jehovah Witness

Authority
No articles of Faith or authoritative statements
of faith.
Theological views are found in their various
publications-the Watch Tower, The Awake. The
doctrines that proceed from these publications
are considered Authoritative.
They contend that scriptures are their final
authority; they misuse the scriptures to establish
their peculiar beliefs. As their heresies could not
be proved by the Bible, they printed their own
bible, The new world translation bible.
Trinity
JWs are Unitarian in their teaching on the
godhead.
There is no authority in the Word of God for
the doctrines of trinity-they claim.
The origin of trinity is from Nimrod who
married his own mother. It is pagan-they say.
Satan is the originator of Trinity.
Jesus Christ
- A created being
- The chief of angels
- Highest of Gods creation.
His true deity stoutly denied.
: 38 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

He was the first and discreet creation of

Jehovah God.
He was the start of Gods creative work.
While on earth He was a perfect man,
nothing more and nothing less.
Jesus was not God the son.
Christ Jesus the divine was born three days
after the crucifixion.
He is a mighty god, not the Almighty God,
who is Jehovah.
The Holy Spirit
Denies the Personality of the Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit is not a person in the godhead.
There is no personal Holy Spirit.
The spirit of God is any power or influence
which God may be pleased to exercise.
The Holy Spirit is not a person, and is therefore
not one of the persons in the trinity.
In the writings of Jehovah witnesses Holy Spirit
is a significant omission.
The Man
Denies man has a soul.
Man is a soul, but does not have a soul.
The claim that man has an immortal soul and
therefore differs from the beast is not scriptural.
The serpent (the devil) is the originator of the
doctrine of the inherent immortality of the soul.
: 39 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

The Atonement
Stripped of any expiatory element.
Idea of substitution is entirely absent.
It is bringing into harmony with God so many
of His creatures under full light and knowledge
to avail themselves the privileges and opportunities of new covenant.
The ransom does not guarantee everlasting life
to any man, but only a second chance.
That which is redeemed is that which was lost.
One un-forfeited life could redeem on forfeited
life but no more.
All what Christs atonement achieved was to
purchase for man the right of continued
existence.
As a human being, He gave himself as a ransom
for men.
Resurrection
Denies physical resurrection.
Teaches spiritual resurrection.
After His death and resurrection Christ became
a quickening spirit and took on different
materialized forms.
Sin and Judgment
Death is annihilation. Hell is tomb/grave which
is retribution for sin of the perverted.
: 40 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Man with sin will be forewarned and given a

second chance. Only few receives penaltyannihilation.
Man by sin does not lose a heavenly paradise,
but only an earthly one.
Sin, therefore, has only a temporal and not an
eternal significance.
God is too good to sustain an everlasting hell.
The grave and physical deaths are the only hell.
The penalty of the second chance is annihilation.
Devil is the author of eternal torment.
Salvation
Since Christ atoning work gave the sinner only
a second chance man is left to be his own
savior.
Men will be given a second chance for salvation
during the millennium.
Second trial will be more favorable than the first.
Christ is not the mediator.
Earth is mans heaven. There will be no other.
Christs sacrifice is not complete but is being
completed by the witnesses.
The Church
Both Catholic and Protestant ecclesiastical
systems had their origin with the Devil and are
now under his supervision.
: 41 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Therefore they constitute the Anti-Christ.

Organized Christianity is hypocritical and selfish.
There is no real love among church people.
The entire church is against Jehovah.
This Devils organization is designated in the
prophecies as an Image of the Beast.

The Second Advent

Sensational interpretation of prophecy.
JWs assert that Christ returned to the temple in
1914 and cleansed it in 1918 for judgment on
sinful men and Satans organization.
Since Christ did not rise physically, neither did
he return physically, nor will He.
We should not expect Lords second coming to
be in a body visible to human eyes.
Earthly Governments
JWs own no allegiance to any human governments.
They repudiate patriotism.
Considers independent of any government
other than Jehovahs theocratic government.
Do not salute the flag of any nation.
The Satan
The ultimate end of Satan is complete annihilation.

More Questions to the

Jehovah Witnesses
All scripture is given by the inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction,
for correction in righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16)
Do you accept this?
1. If you do not accept the Holy Bible as the one
authentic source of our revelation of God
a) Why did Pastor Russell write his six volume
studies in the scripture?
b) Why do you choose those portions which
suit your teachings, and deny the whole
body of scripture which contradicts your
claims?
c) If all scripture is not authentic, as the Bible
itself claims to be, who are you to be able
to choose which is to be relied upon? Pastor
Russell claimed (watch tower, Sept. 15, 1910)
that his studies on the scriptures were
practically the Bible itself, and of more
value than the Bible. God says, (2 Pet. 1:20)
No prophecy of the scripture is of any
private interpretation. Who is right - Pastor
Russell or the Bible?
d) Why have you been unable to accept
existing translations? If a new version (the
New World translation and the Emphatic
diaglott) is needed to strengthen Jehovahs
Witness teaching, is that not strong evidence
: 45 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

that the teaching is unscriptural? Charles T.

Russell, who claimed to be a Greek scholar,
when handed a Greek New Testament in a
court trial in Hamilton, Canada, on March
13, 1913, admitted under oath that he did
not know one Greek from another. Then,
who are the translators of the new world and
Emphatic Diaglott translations? Can you
prove that they were Greek scholars?
2. If, as you claim, only 144,000 will be among the
redeemed, what chance of salvation do you
have?
a) Surely with the success which the Jehovahs
witnesses claim for themselves there must
have been over 144,000 Jehovahs witnesses
since the movement started in 1874. Were
those all redeemed or were some of them
lost? If some were lost in spite of being
Jehovahs witnesses, what assurance do you
have that you are among the elect? And why
do you seek to persuade others to join your
uncertain state?
b) Do you realize that Jehovahs witness books,
Prepa-ration (1983) and Riches (1934),
recognizing that the number 144,000 had
already been completed, the new classes
among Jehovahs witness followers, and none
of the present Jehovahs witnesses are among
the 144,000?
: 46 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

i) If you know this, why do you use this

number for propaganda?
ii)If you do not know this, read those books
and see what class you are in.
c) To what tribe of Israel do you belong? The
144,000 referred to in Rev. 7:4-8 concerns
Jews only. If this passage is not the source
of this number for the Jehovahs witnesses,
what authority do you claim for using this
number?
d) The very next verse in Rev. 7:9 claims that
among the redeemed is a great multitude
which no man could number, of all nations,
and kindred, and peoples and tongues.
Who is right - the Jehovahs witness or the
Bible?
e) In Rev. 14:1-5 these are first fruits
indicating others are not. Who are redeemed,
and virgins. Do Jehovahs Witness qualify
for that?

SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTISTS
Introduction:
Seventh-Day Adventists love to be known as
Christians. They are not. Seventh-Day Adventism
(SDA) is a cult with several heretical teachings. The
burden of this article is not to expose them with a
goal to insult or ridicule. The aim is to educate and
equip true Christians to witness to the members of the
SDA and win them to the Lord Jesus Christ.
History:
William Miller, a Baptist minister, interpreted Daniel
8:14 to mean that Christ would return between March
21, 1843 and March 21, 1844. His prophesy failed to
come true. A new date, in October 1844, was set. But
Jesus did not follow Millers prescription. Later Miller
confessed his error of setting dates and he died in
1849. He was honest to admit his mistake.
Ellen G. White and her husband James White were
part of this date setting with Miller. Mrs. White was
accepted as the prophetess of Millers followers and her
inspired counsel and visions were considered equal
in inspiration and infallible like the Bible. To save face
concerning the failed prophecies, she interpreted that
: 50 :

instead of our High Priest coming out of the Most

Holy of the heavenly sanctuary, he for the first time
entered second compartment of that sanctuary to
perform Investigative Judgment (explained later) as
part of His atoning work. He is continuing to do this
work to complete His work of redemption.
The Name:
Seventh-Day Adventism is the name given to this
cult because of the two special emphases on Keeping
the Seventh Day (Sabbath Keeping) and date setting
for the Advent of Christ.
It is a cult:
Seventh-Day Adventists want to be perceived as
Evangelical Christians. They seek a ministerial place
among protestant denominations. But Seventh-Day
Adventists claim they are the true and only remnant
Church. They declare that Satan has taken full
possession of other Churches. Seventh-Day Adventists
state that the prayers of Evangelical Believers are an
abomination to God. They go on to say that Christian
Churches are the Mystery of Babylon with the mark
of the beast because we do not keep the Sabbath.
Why should Seventh-Day Adventists get a place in the
Evangelical fellowships?
Their heresies prove beyond shadow of doubt they
are cultists. Some of their beliefs and teachings cause
embarrassment to Seventh-Day Adventists. All these
are written in her [Whose book?] book The Great
: 51 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Controversy and periodicals like Ministry Magazine,

Voice of Prophecy, Faith for Today, Spiritual gifts and
Revelation seminars. You will not hear many of their
false doctrines in their conferences and seminars. One
of their deceptions is only revealing these doctrines
after someone becomes an active Seventh-Day
Adventist.
To win over innocent and ignorant people,
Seventh-Day Adventists will only preach evangelical
truths to the people. After they are convinced and
ready for baptism, only then they will be asked,
Do you believe in the gift of prophecy for these
days? When they reply yes these newcomers are
hooked on the deception that the prophecies and
counsels of Ellen G. White are equal to the Word of
God.
Investigative Judgment:
This doctrine was formulated by one Hiram Edson
to cover up and save face because Christ did not
return in 1844 as White had predicted. This false
doctrine states that instead of returning to earth,
Christ has entered into the second compartment of
the sanctuary to continue the cleansing work and
complete the work of redemption. While He is
continuing His atoning work, we should work hard to
perfect our salvation in Christ.

The Bible: Seventh-Day Adventists give Whites

writings and counsels equal authority as the Bible.
: 52 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Whites writings and counsels are the final

determining factors for the interpretation of the
Bible. In her writings (Testimonies Vol. 5, Pages
661, 67, 492 etc.) White claims that her counsels
and writings are equally inspired as the Bible and
that she is a replacement for Christ.
White instructed all Seventh-Day Adventists
followers to interpret the Bible only according to
her writings. There is a prohibition of any
independent and private interpretation. On Feb. 7,
1887 the general conference of SDA passed the
resolution, That we re-affirm our binding confidence in
the testimonies of Sister White to the Church, as the
teaching of the spirit of God (ADA yearbook for
1914, Page 253.)

Deity of Jesus Christ: Seventh-Day Adventists are

confused about the person of the Lord Jesus
Christ. White writes that Jesus Christ is the chief
archangel Michael and at the same time he is the
Lord of hosts.

Satan the Sin Bearer: Another Seventh-Day

Adventist heresy says that Jesus Christ placed the
sin of humanity on Satan and then sent him for
destruction (Great Controversy, page 485). The
Bible says that Christ bore our sins on the tree
(1 Peter 2:24). Become a Seventh-Day Adventist
and it will be Satan who will eventually bear your
sins!
: 53 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Soul sleep: After death the soul of man does not

know anything. He is in an unconscious state.

Annihilation of the wicked: There is a denial of

literal eternal hell. There is no literal fire or torment
in hell. They preach that sinners will be destroyed
and cease to exist.

Salvation: By receiving Christ as your personal

savior, only your past sins, up to that moment are
forgiven. A condition for gaining eternal life is
obedience to the commandments of God. SeventhDay Adventists preach ANOTHER GOSPEL
just like Paul warns against in his epistle to the
Galatians.

Sabbath Keeping: White claims that in one of

her visions she saw the fourth commandment
glowing more than all others. God commanded
White to proclaim keeping of Sabbath as required
for salvation. Sunday keepers are doomed to
receive the mark of the beast and lose eternal life
(The Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 4, Page 505). For
Seventh-Day Adventists observance of the Sabbath
is required for completing salvation. For them,
salvation is by the grace of God plus human
works. Christ exclaimed, It is finished when He
died for our sins, but is not finished for SeventhDay Adventists. Observance of a special day is
required for their salvation, though Paul strongly
spoke against it (Col. 2:16,17).
: 54 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

No Mediator: Those who are living on the earth

when the intercession of Christ shall cease in the
sanctuary above are to stand in the sight of holy
God without a mediator. Through the Grace of
God and their own diligent effort, they must
be conquerors in the battle with evil... (Great
Controversy, Page 425). Obviously Seventh-Day
Adventists follow Whites writings over what is
stated in the Bible in Heb. 7:25.

Sin Recording Angel: White writes of an angel

who watches each person and records with terrible
exactness their each and every sin. Without a
mediator for the Seventh-Day Adventist man this
exact recording is terrible.

Consulting the Dead: White engaged in necromancy, communication with the dead, which is
expressly forbidden in Deut. 18:10-12. This took
place after the death of her husband (Recorded in
Retirement Years, Pages 161-163). Her dead
husband appeared before her, communicated to
her, gave her advice and both of them agreed to
keep in touch.

Assorted theories of this cult

White advocated Vegetarianism: Meat eating

will make man over-sexed she wrote. White also
believed that eating meat will turn a mans nature
to be that of the animal he eats. (This is a plain
contradiction against the Bible that states God
: 55 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

created the animals after each kind... and that

nature cannot be changed.
White endorsed a cold bath and a long stay in the
bathtub and placing cold towels on ones head to keep
cool.
She prohibited people from sleeping on feather
beds. But she wrote a letter and ordered a feather bed
for herself.
White made some rules on wearing adapted
dresses, with pants on the inside and a long dress on
the outside. Because this became uncomfortable and
complicated, wearing pants had to be discarded.
White believed that angels require golden cards for
gate passes into heaven.
White claimed that in visions she had traveled to
other planets and she had even met Enoch.
White spoke against wigs on the head, stating that
wigs will make people insane.
Various Prophecies of Ellen G. White:
White prophesied that Christ would return in 1843,
1844, 1856 and 1874.
White prophesied that the people alive in 1856
would be translated at the second coming of Jesus
(Testimonies, Vol. 6, Pages 131,132).
White said in the same Testimonies of Church
Vol. 1, Page 359, that the United States would be
humbled to dust by England during the Civil War.
: 56 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

It is surprising that there are 10 million SeventhDay Adventist followers now, in spite of these many
failed prophecies of the false prophetess.
Seventh-Day Adventists links with other Cults:

Seventh-Day Adventists & Jehovahs Witnesses:

Believed and predicted end of the world in
1843-44. Revised the prophesy to 1874 as the year
of Christs return. This too did not take place.
Jesus Christ is the chief archangel Michael, inferior
to God the father. There is no literal, eternal hell.
Annihilation of sinners. Soul Sleep. Investigative
judgment and Christs spiritual presence, instead of
physical return, are also very similar.

Seventh-Day Adventists & Mormons: Less than

20% of Whites writings are original. More than
80% of her writings are plagiarized from Joseph
Smiths writing.

THE CHURCH OF
JESUS CHRIST OF
LATTER DAY SAINTS (LDS)
(Mormonism)

Mormonism,

also known as the Church of Jesus

Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), has slowly crept into
India. Now, in 2012, there are 9,000 adherents to
Mormonism in our country. In Delhi alone there are
about 5000 + followers of this cult. In Bangalore there
are 1,100 followers. In the USA, LDS is the fastest
growing religion. Islam takes second place. The total
membership of LDS is more than 14 million
worldwide in 2011. The headquarters of LDS is in Salt
Lake City, Utah, USA.
There are 1,138 operating Temples of LDS in the
world. (Their well-established worship places are
called Temples). There are 79 Mormon temples in USA.
LDS has already resolved to construct a temple in
New Delhi. Their chosen second location India is
Bangalore. There is a slow infiltration of LDS in
Andhra Pradesh, especially in Hyderabad. LDS tries
hard to make others believe that Mormonism is a
Christian church. But close examination of LDS
doctrines reveal that it is anti-Christian and anti-Bible.
: 58 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Just like the Jehovahs Witness cult, LDS is very

active in aggressive witnessing and trying to proselytize
people to their faith. All the males in LDS are expected
to do compulsory missionary work for two years. LDS
adds their own Book of Mormon to the 66 books
of the Holy Bible and present it to people, claiming
that together it is the complete Bible - the most
reliable version. The Book of Mormon was written by
JOSEPH SMITH Jr., and first published in 1830.
It contains the visions and revelations Smith claimed
to have received from the angel Moroni. Mitt Romney,
a 2012 presidential candidate in the USA, is a staunch
Mormon. His visibility has raised the image and
respectability of LDS, and Mormon missionaries in the
USA mention Romneys Mormonism when proselytizing. The Mormon religion is one of the richest
organizations in the USA. The LDS pour this money
in to reaching people around the world who could be
easily persuaded to be converted to the religion,
especially in India.
We Christians should know about LDS. We should
witness to them in the love of Christ. We should do
all what we can to bring them to Eternal salvation and
assurance in Christ. We do not need to argue with
them. We should be able to answer them and also
refute their doctrines with Scripture.
To prepare this study, I have spent several hours
with some of their elders. I have read the Book of
Mormon. I have done much research. I am presenting
this booklet to you with a desire to establish you in
: 59 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

sound doctrine and to enable you to witness LDS

followers. It is also my prayer that the adherents of
Mormon religion will get saved through reading this
treatise.
Life and Death of Joseph Smith Jr., 1805-1844.
Born on December 23, 1805, in Sharon, Vermont,
New York to Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith. In the
spring of 1820, at the age of 15, he received the first
vision while praying in the woods in upstate New
York. He was visited by two personages he identified
as God the Father and His son Jesus Christ.
During September 21 & 22, 1823 the resurrected
MORONI appeared to Smith and told him of the
existence of ancient gold plates (tablets written by the
prophets but not recorded in the Bible) and instructed
him on his role in restoring the gospel.
On September 22, 1827 (4 years later) Joseph
Smith received the gold plates (tablets) from the angel
MORONI at the Hill Cumorah in upstate New York.
(It is from these golden tablets that the Book of
Mormon was translated.)
Along with the plates, Joseph Smith received the
Urim and Thummim, placed in silver bowls. These
were two stones like eye glasses that enabled Joseph
Smith to translate the Reformed Egyptian gold tablets.
This is the way the Book of Mormon was born.
Who was Moroni? Moroni was the son of Mormon.
Mormon had written the prophecies of the early
: 60 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

prophets mentioned above (Prophets Nephi, Jacob,

Enos and others.) The writings record the departure
of righteous Jews from Jerusalem in 600 B.C. and their
arrival in the Americas. The righteous Nephites and
the wicked Lamanites had a severe battle in A.D. 421.
(Lamanites were the darker skinned forefathers of the
Indians.) The righteous Nephites were defeated and
Moroni the son of Mormon was killed. The gold
tablets were buried on the western side of Cumorah
hill, in Palmyra, New York. After the resurrection of
Moroni, he took Smith to Cumorah hill and showed
him the place where the gold tablets were buried
(1823). But only four years later, in 1827, was Joseph
Smith given the Book of Mormon by Moroni.
Joseph Smith claimed that at the age of 30, on
April 3, 1836, Jesus Christ appeared to him and Oliver
Cowdery in the Kirtland Temple in Ohio. At the same
time, Moses, Elias and Elijah appeared and conveyed
priesthood keys to Joseph Smith.
In June 1830, at the age of 24, Joseph Smith was
arrested on charges of occultism, divination, using
seer stones to excavate and loot treasures from other
peoples properties. Though released, at the age of 33
he was again arrested and imprisoned at Liberty Jail,
in Liberty, Missouri (December 1, 1838 - April 16,
1839).
Joseph Smith became the mayor of Nauvoo,
Illinois. He remained a controversial figure. Many loved
him and believed in his religion. But others considered
: 61 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

him a crook and deceiver. The local newspaper, the

Nauvoo Expositor, published articles to expose the
extortion, immorality and polygamy of Joseph Smith.
In response, Smith raised the Nauvoo Legion of
5,000 people, burnt the printing press and declared
martial law. The governor of Illinois, Thomas Ford,
called Smith to Carthage for explanation. Fearing
reprisal, Smith crossed the river Montreal and escaped
to Iowa. But one of his wives EMMA requested him
to come back and prove himself to be a brave man
and not a coward. From that time on, Smith and his
colleagues adapted a Messianic flavor when describing
subsequent events, often quoting the scripture, As a
lamb that was led to the slaughter and claiming that
Smith was obedient to God and submitted to cruel
death (Martyrdom). Joseph Smith was arrested and
imprisoned in Carthage Jail.
The final day for Joseph Smith came on June 27,
1844. A mob of about 200 people surrounded the
Carthage Jail and climbed to the top floor where Smith
was imprisoned with his brother Hyrum Smith and
twenty others. Smith and his twenty companions tried
in vain to block the door and stop the mob. Then
Hyrum Smith, who had a gun, did shoot into their
assailants. Suddenly one bullet came from the mob,
hitting the left side of Hyrums nose. Hyrum fell down,
saying I am a dead man. Smith knelt down beside his
dying brother and cried, O, my brother Hyrum.
Then Joseph Smith took Hyrum Smiths gun and
: 62 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

started shooting from the window into the mob,

killing three people. The mob fired several shots,
hitting Smith. He fell from the window and died with
a cry of Oh, My God. (One of the senior Elders of
LDS in the Salt Lake Temple, in Salt Lake City, Utah,
Elder SALT, confirmed this story to the visitors in
1982. The followers of LDS try hard to alter the
version and make it look more like a Martyrdom.
Smiths death cannot be compared to the death of
Christ. Jesus died voluntarily. But the Carthage County
court records state that one Cyrus Wylock had
smuggled a pistol in to Hyrum Smith and this gun was
used to kill at least three people in the mob. It is even
reported by the leaders of LDS that Smith requested
for wine to be brought in for drinking because of the
terrible despair he was facing in prison. Smith did not
die willingly. He did not volunteer to die. But Jesus did
for our sake. There is no comparison at all between
their deaths.
Joseph Smith practised Polygamy, though the
Mormons try hard to refute it. Smith had at least 30
wives. Ten of them had their own husbands while
living with Smith. Some of the wives were in their
teens - as young as 14 years. Of course the wife about
whom we read the most is Emma Hale, who married
Smith on January 18, 1827. It is recorded that Smith
had a total of 11 children. Two of them were
adopted. Five of them died in infancy.

Doctrines of Mormonism
(Quotations from The Plan of Salvation booklet
published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
saints.)

Man (You and me) existed even before we

were born: You (man) lived with Him (God) as
a spirit before you were born on earth. You knew
and loved Him, and He knew you and loved you.
This period is called pre-earth life. You were sinless
in your pre-earth life.
Although your memory of it (pre-earth life) is
withheld, before you came to this earth you lived
in the presence of God, your Eternal father, and
His Son, Jesus Christ. You shouted for joy when
given the privilege of coming to this earth to
receive a body and to follow Gods plan for your
happiness.
Satan, one of Gods spirit children, rebelled
against our Heavenly Father Sadly, many of our
Heavenly Fathers children chose to follow Satan. In
the pre-earth life, you chose to have faith in Jesus
Christ and to follow Gods plan. Because of your
choice, you were born on earth. Satan tempted
Adam and Eve, to eat the forbidden fruit, and
they chose to do so. Their physical and spiritual
separation from God is called the fall.

God authored the fall of man: Adam fell that

men might be, and men are, that they might have
: 64 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

joy (Read 2 Nephi 222-25). Because of the

fall, you are separated from God physically and
spiritually. This separation is part of Gods plan for
His children. When you make wrong choices and
commit sin, you separate yourself to some degree
from God. The scripture call this separation
spiritual death

The Atonement of Jesus Christ: Because your

Heavenly Father loves you, He sent His Son, Jesus
Christ, to pay for your sins. This payment is part
of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. (This teaching
states that Atonement did not fully pay for mans
sin. Man has to add good works and endurance for
salvation = Salvation is not all by Grace. Salvation
is by the Grace of God plus the works of man.)
In paying for your sins, Jesus did not eliminate
your agency or personal responsibility - He will not
make you clean against your will. To receive His
help and strength, you need to exercise faith in
Him, repent and be baptized, receive the Holy
Ghost, and choose to follow His teachings for the
rest of your life. (Note: There are six steps to be
completed for salvation according to LDS:Repentance, Faith, Baptism, Receiving the Holy
Spirit by Confirmation, Sacraments and Endure till
the end. So, nobody can be sure of salvation until
death.)

A second chance for salvation, after death: At

your death, your spirit will leave your body and go
: 65 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

to the spirit world, which is a place of learning and

preparation. (Note: What about the sure judgment
after death - Heb. 9:27. What does it mean when
scripture says now is the accepted time and now
is the day of salvation in 2 Corinthians 6:2? Is this
Mormon teaching any different from the purgatory
doctrine of Roman Catholicism?)

Universal Salvation: In the end all will be saved.

Our Heavenly Father knew that many of His
children would never have an opportunity to learn
about Jesus Christ during their lives and that others
would choose not to follow Him. Because He loves
His children, God provided a way for those in the
spirit world to learn about His plan, have faith in
Jesus Christ and repent. Those who accept and
follow Jesus Christ will have peace and rest. (Note:
This teaching gives a second chance for all sinners
after their death. Because there is opportunity for
salvation after death, man can live as he pleases on
earth during his lifetime. This gives license to sin,
crime and violence.)

Degrees of Glory: After you are judged, you

will live in a state of Glory. Because every mans
works and desires vary, heaven includes different
kingdoms, or different glory.

Celestial Kingdom: Our Heavenly Father and

Jesus Christ reside in the celestial kingdom, If you
live according to the gospel of Jesus Christ and are
cleansed from sin by the Atonement, you will receive
: 66 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

a place in this, the highest kingdom, and You will

live in Gods presence and know complete joy.

Terrestrial Kingdom: People who refuse to

accept the gospel of Jesus Christ, but who live
honorable lives will receive a place in the terrestrial
kingdom. (Note: According to this all moral people
of all religions will be in this kingdom. Hindus,
Muslims and also all Christians who did not accept
Christ. So, we should not preach about hell and
judgment. People can live in this world as they like.
Does it not seem that to follow this teaching will
create a horrible world?)

Telestial kingdom: Those who continue in their

sins and do not repent will receive a place in this
Telestial kingdom. (Note: If so, why should
we preach the Bible? Why should we preach
repentance and righteous living on earth? If all are
going to be in one of the compartments of glory/
heaven, every man can live in sin as long as he is
on earth.)
(Other teachings listed in the booklet
The Gospel of Jesus Christ.)

Salvation: Even though a sinner repents, accepts

Christ, gets baptized and receives the Holy Spirit,
he cannot be sure of his salvation during his
lifetime. This is exactly as the Hindus and other
religions believe. It offers no assurance of salvation
during mans earthly lifetime.
: 67 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Endure till the end for (unsure) salvation: This

means good works are required for uncertain
salvation. So, salvation is the Grace of God plus
works of man. And you can never be sure of
salvation.

Holy Spirit: A sinner repents, believes in the

atonement of Christ, gets baptized and after that,
when the apostles lay hands on him and pray
(Confirmation), he receives the Holy Ghost. This
Holy Spirit leave him whenever he falls in sins.

Judgment and Hell: All people will ultimately be

in heaven, though their degrees of glory (the three
heavenly kingdoms) will differ. Hell is not literal. It
is the spirit world after death which in fact is a
place of preparation, purification and promotion.
The term hell is not literal hell with fire and
brimstone. Rather it is memory and feelings like
phantom pain.

Sacraments: Sacraments (baptism & Holy Communion) are required for completing salvation. In
sacrament bread represents the physical body of
Christ and water represents the blood of Christ.
Grape juice or wine are not used. (Note: Water is
used instead of wine. Grape juice represents blood
much better than water! Juice comes out when a
grape is crushed. Jesus was crushed. Why is feet
washing not practiced? Jesus said that we should
wash one anothers feet. If salvation can be
completed only by rituals, is that not ritualism? Is
: 68 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

that not adding works to the atonement of Christ?

Please read Ephesians 2:8-10).
Facts Mormons wont tell you when they call at
your door:
LDS are very active and aggressive in spreading
their doctrine. They visit homes two by two dressed
in crystal white shirts, black trousers, neckties and with
an Army haircut. They knock at the door and wait
for permission to come in. They are well versed in their
doctrines and they can quote from their religious book
very quickly.
The Following are teachings they will not disclose
to you in the beginning:
* That your church is wrong, your Bible is incomplete,
your Christian creeds are an abomination to God
and your Pastor is the hireling of Satan.
* That there is salvation only in their church. That
salvation is possible only by completing six steps:
Repentance, Faith in Christ, Water baptism,
Sacraments, Confirmation to receive the Holy Spirit
and Endure till the end.
* That those who have been through their temples
are wearing secret underwear to protect themselves
from evil. This evil includes non-Mormon
religion like yours.
* That they think familiar spirits are good, and
that the book of Mormon has a familiar spirit.
: 69 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

(Leviticus 19:31 says familiar spirits defile one and

are to be avoided at all costs.)
* That women receive salvation only through their
Mormon husbands and must remain pregnant for
all eternity.
* That they intend to be gods themselves one day
and are hoping to earn this exultation to godhood
by witnessing to others.
* That they intend to have many wives in heaven,
carrying on multiple sexual relations throughout
eternity, until they have enough children to
populate their own earth, so they can be Heavenly
Father over their own planet.
* That you were a spirit-child of [their] Heavenly
Father through one of His numerous wives and
you existed before you were born on this earth.
* That Mary wasnt a virgin at all but had sexual
relations with their Heavenly Father to produce the
Mormon version of Jesus Christ.
* That their leaders taught that Jesus had at least
three wives and children while he was on this
earth.
* That the Heavenly Father they ask you to pray
to, is really an exalted man that lives on a planet
near the star base Kolob, and is not the Heavenly
Father of the Bible at all.
* That Jesus was really Lucifers brother in the spirit
world, and it was only due to a heavenly council
: 70 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

vote that Jesus became our redeemer instead of

Satan!
* That there are over one hundred divisions in
Mormonism. They conveniently forget this while
criticizing the many denominations within the body
of Christ.
* That their so-called scriptures such as the Book
of Mormon, Pearl of Great price, Doctrine and
Covenants and even their official Mor mon
Doctrine statements contradict each other on
MAJOR doctrinal points. The King James Bible is
likewise contradicted.
* That the reason the Book of Mormon has no
maps is because there is not one scrap of archeological evidence to support it!
* That the state of Utah, which is predominantly
Mormon, has a higher rate than the national
average of wife-beating, child abuse and teenage
suicide.
* That their prophet Joseph Smith was heavily
involved in the occult when he founded
Mormonism.
* That they encourage visitations from the dead
relatives from the spirit world, a practice
forbidden in the Bible. (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
* That there are many accounts of Joseph Smiths
first vision besides the one they present to you,
and all are different.
: 71 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

* That their secret temple oaths are based on the

Scottish Rite Free Masons.
* That for years they considered the Negro race
inferior, and even one drop of Negro blood
prevented a person from entering their temple.
* That they expect Christ to return to their temple
in Missouri. (But they havent built the temple He
is supposed to return to. That property is owned
by The Temple Lot Mormons who have plans
of their own, and wont let the Salt Lake City
group buy it.)
* That they consider the Bible to be untrustworthy,
full of errors and incomplete.
* That the Atonement of Jesus Christ only partially
saves the believer.
* That according to Anton Loveys Satanic Bible, the
demon god of the living dead is called Mormo.
Is it just a coincidence that the Mormons are so
concerned with the dead?
* That on their Salt Lake temple they prominently
display an upside-down star which is a Satanic
symbol known as the Goats head. Why ?
* That they believe the Archangel Michael came
down to earth with several of his celestial wives,
and became Adam in the garden of Eden.
* That the Archangel Gabriel came down to earth
and became Noah in the days of the flood.
: 72 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

* That their prophet Joseph Smith prophesied falsely

many times. For example, he foretold the second
coming of Christ in 1891. [The Bible teaches that
one false prophecy puts the prophet under death
sentence (Deuteronomy 18:20-22).]
* That the Mormons brutally murdered an innocent
wagon train of settlers as they were travelling
through Utah, over one hundred men, women and
children, in the Mountain Meadows Massacre.
* That their founder Joseph Smith had 20-30 wives
and that he was a polygamist and immoral person.
* That their prophet and the founder of Mormonism
did not die as a martyr. Joseph Smith was killed
during a gun battle in which he killed three men.
* That Joseph Smith taught that there were
inhabitants on the moon, and another Mormon
prophet, Brigham Young, taught there were
inhabitants on the sun as well!
Some of my questions to the Mormon Missionary
who tries to explain salvation to me:
1) Why should I seek a salvation of which I can
never be sure, while I am so sure of my salvation
through Christ as promised in the scriptures and
by what I have experienced? (John 1:12, 3:16, 5:24,
6:37, 10:1,28). Are you asking me to give up the
gold to purchase the copper? Do you expect to be
foolish like that?
: 73 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

2) If baptism is required in order to receive the Holy

Ghost, is that not ritualism? If baptism is
necessary for going to heaven, are you stopping the
thief on the cross at the gate of heaven to whom
Jesus said, Today you shall be with me in
paradise? Are you planning to chase him out of
Paradise? Can anybody be saved without baptism?
3) Can a repentant believer receive the Holy Spirit
before baptism? You say that the Holy Spirit will
leave a person when he falls into any sin. If the
Holy Spirit comes and goes like that, what about
the scriptures that speak of the Indwelling, Sealing,
Anointing and Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
(Ephesians 1:12,13, 4:30).
4) Joseph Smith claimed God the Father first
appeared to him and then Jesus Christ (two
personages). He also said that in heaven Jesus
Christ and the Father will be two different
personalities. How do you reconcile these statements if Mormonism believes in a Trinity/Triune
God?
5) Is there any way Mormonism can prove that
Joseph smith was righteous, pure and moral? Why
should I follow the claims of a man whose very
life is under heavy reproach and shame in history?
Was he not immoral, polygamist and murderer?
6) Joseph Smith claimed that the purity of faith and
practice of Christian principles and doctrines were
diluted and degenerated in earlier centuries. Then
: 74 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

God appeared to Joseph Smith and gave a new

revelation written on gold plates and that is The
Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus
Christ. My Question: Instead of heralding the
truths of the Scriptures (66 books) and bringing
repentance and renewal in the church, why did
Joseph Smith create another Scripture and claim
that is Another Testament of Jesus Christ? Is this
not a deception and will this not inherit a curse
from God? (Revelation: 22:18,19). Is this not
another Gospel that Apostle Paul warned of ?
(Galatians 5:11,12; 1:6-9).
7) Joseph Smith taught that the light skinned people
(Caucasians) are the righteous Nephites and the
dark skinned people, including the American
Indians, are unrighteous. Is this not promoting
racial prejudice? Does this not imply that white
skinned people are sinless and brown skinned
people are sinners? Why should we the brown
skinned and dark skinned people of India give any
asylum or entry to Mormons who boast of racial
superiority? Let us be wise.
In conclusion, here is my ear nest plea to
members of the Mormon church (LDS):
Jesus Christ and His atonement is the only way for
salvation. The Holy Bible with 66 books is the only
Holy Scripture. Extra Biblical revelation beyond those
66 books and claims of prophecy is the foundation for
any cult, religion and heresy. Salvation is complete by
: 75 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

the repenting of sin and accepting Christ as savior in

the heart of a sinner (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans
10:9,10). You can get assurance of salvation here and
now, the moment you accept Christ as your Savior
and Lord (John 5:24; Romans 8:16; 1 John 5:10-13;
John 1:12, 6:37, 10:28).
If you are already a victim of Mormonism, I will
pray to God for you and your true salvation and
assurance while you are alive on earth. If you need
help and counsel please contact us.

CHRISTADELPHIANISM
(A quick look at Christadelphianism)

There

are two religious systems. Christian and

non-Christian. Though there are doctrinal differences
between sects, if there is unity on essentials that
pertain to salvation, then the sect is Christian. But any
sect that adheres to serious false doctrines that reject
the essential doctrines of salvation is non-Christian.
Christadelpinism is non-Christian because of some
very serious false doctrines they hold. For example
they reject the truths that Jesus Christ is God, they
reject the truth of a physical resurrection and they
reject salvation by grace through faith.
Its Origins
The Christadelphian religious group traces its
origin to Dr. John Thomas (1805-1871) who migrated
to North America from England in 1832. Following
a near ship wreck, he vowed to find out the truth
about life and God through personal bible study.
Initially, John Thomas found sympathy with the rapidly
emerging Restoration movement that stood against
sectarianism and unscriptural, traditional rituals and
practices of the mainline denominations. Both of
them questioned the orthodox, main stream Christian
beliefs.
: 79 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

However, Thomas had serious disagreements and

vehement debates with Alexander Campbell, the leader
of the Restoration movement. [I looked it up, and
its spelled Campbell.] Campbell advocated that many
of those traditional doctrines were basic requirements
for salvation. Thomas argued that Scripture does not
support a multiplicity of different doctrines and he
challenged people to continue with the process of
restoration to bring the church back to the first
century Christian beliefs. Their debates continued for
some time. A history appears in the book, Dr. John
Thomas, His life and work (1973) by Robert Roberts.
During this process of formulating his ideas,
Thomas was baptized twice, the second time after
renouncing the beliefs he previously held. He based
his new position on a new appreciation for the reign
of Christ on Davids Throne. The abjuration of his
former beliefs eventually led to his split (separation)
from Restoration movement.
Christadelphian community growth goes back to
May 1848 to 1850. This new teaching began to spread
in Scotland. Later Christadelphianism began to infiltrate
and take roots in North America.
Today the Christadelphian body remains divided
into number of fellowships. By far the largest isthe
central fellowship, with 55,000 members. A large
number of unmended Christadelphians exist in the
USA and Canada. Smaller fellowships include the
Berean Christadelphians, The Dawn Christadelphians,
: 80 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

the Old Paths Christadelphians and the Pioneer

Christadelphians.
Christadelphianism has made inroads into mainstream Christianity and congregational churches in
India also. We see their worship halls and Bible study
houses in different cities, including Bangalore where
I live. It is our responsibility to witness to them and
try to bring them back to the Biblicalpath.
The creeping in of this false religion into Christian
communities has become like an incurable cancer
hidden in some Christian circles because their
advocates cleverly deceive the ignorant and unlearned
children of God by mixing biblical truths with heretical
teachings. Christadelphians loudly proclaim the true
doctrines that we accept and they slowly brainwash the
innocent and ignorant after they are absorbed into
their religion.
The Bible has given clear warnings against such
people. The Lord has asked us to defend correct
doctrine and oppose false doctrines. That is what I am
doing through this writing. At the same time my
intention is to lovingly plead with the Christadelhians
to give up their heresies and accept Jesus Christ, the
true and living God, as their savior and Lord.
Its Attraction
Christadelphians promote a great thirst for Bible
study. Christadelphians are very diligent Bible students.
: 81 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

They are also zealous propagators of the New Light.

The sect encourages each member to study the Bible
for themselves
Its worship & Gathering Pattern:
Christadelphian groups are called Ecclesias, the
called-out ones. They have a weekly breaking of bread
ceremony, a public lecture, weekly Bible Class and a
womens meeting. There are no professional clergy.
Meetings are run by elders. Most women wear hats
during their services. Meetings are led by men only.
Its Characteristics
The cult has two outstanding characteristics:
* The Zeal:
Search the scriptures diligently.
They will compass the land and sea to make one
proselyte.
A prospective convert is cultivated with great
attention and cannot escape easily from them.
Their zeal is not outstanding in endeavoring to
reach the outcasts and sinful of our cities and
villages.
* Intolerence:
They are the only scriptural constitution of the
one body of which Jesus Christ is alone the
head.
: 82 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

They repudiate popular churches, believing there

is no salvation to be found in the enclosure of
any one of them.
Religious opinions and sacraments of all orders
and classes are nothing but strong delusions.
Object to the fundamental doctrines of Christendom.
They argue that in Christian churches there is no
real Bible teaching.
They label Christian churches as the abomination of the earth and the eight headed
beast (Rev. 17:3).
Its Creed
Christadelphianism denies all doctrines which the
Christian churches hold as essential to Christian faith.
They adhere to no creeds; however they do have a list
of 53 commandments of Christ, mostly drawn from
his words, but some from the Epistles. While posing
as the champions of true faith, they are in reality
among the greatest enemies of truth.
Bible: Christadelphians believe that the 66 books of
the Bible are the inerrent, inspired word of God.
Scripture is complete and sufficient for teaching the
way to be saved.
Its Status today
Christadelphians bemoan the fact they are
in decline. Some of their members are becoming
: 83 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

evangelical Protestants. But currently the presence of

Christadelphians is strongly felt in the south Indian
states.
Its Doctrines

The Trinity: Christadelphians reject the scriptural

doctrine of the Trinity. They teach that God is one
and does not exist in three persons. They hold
the doctrine of Unitarianism. Jesus Christ is not
the second person of an eternal trinity of god
(polytheism) but the manifestation of one eternal
creator.

Jesus Christ: They deny that Christ is the eternal,

incarnate son of God. Christ did not exist prior to
his birth by Mary. Jesus is the name of the Virgins
son, not that of eternal pre-existent God. Jesus is
the Father made manifest in the flesh, not a preexistent co-eternal Son of God. The Son is the
manifestation of the Father in a man begotten by
the Spirit. Christ had the same body as us - full of
the same properties and same desires (They
interpret Romans 8:3 sinful flesh and likeness of
flesh to mean the same. Being born from his
mother, Christ received the properties to sin.
Christadelphians do not worship Christ. They say
that Jesus Christ is a man and not God. They argue
that Jesus Christ cannot be God because he died.
God cannot die. They also reject the personal
pre-existence of Christ. Christadelphians believe
that Jesus was made of the same fallen, no-good
: 84 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

substance that composes the rest of humanity:

sinful flesh. Because of this, they are not Christians.

Holy Spirit: Christadelphians deny the personality

of the Holy Spirit. They argue that the Holy Spirit
is only a force of God that upholds creation and
does miracles. The Holy Spirit is the radiant invisible
power or energy from the Father. He is not a
personal God distinct from the Father.

Satan: Christadelphians reject the doctrine of Satan

as the source of evil. They reject the personality of
Satan. They advocate that God is the source of
both good and evil. The Devil is a scriptural
manifestation of sin in the flesh.

Atonement: Christadelphians deny the atoning

value of the death of Christ. This cult deprives
the doctrine of substitutionary sacrifice of Christ.
Christs death is seen as the expression of the
Fathers love. But this ignores the righteousness of
God demanding satisfaction for sin, as it means
Christs death paid no debt. According to the
Christadelphians, the death of Christ was not to
appease the wrath of God. They do not refer to
Christ as savior. The blood of Christ is not
believed to have power to cleanse us from sin. The
confession of Jesus as Lord is altogether ignored.

Death: Christadelphians do not believe that the

soul is immortal. The dead are in the sleep of
death, a state of unconsciousness. This is called
soul sleep. (We will deal with this doctrine later.)
: 85 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Bible speaks explicitly that believers will be

resurrected at the return of Christ. (This point will
be explained in detail in subsequent pages because
of the false theory of Christadelphianism on this
doctrine.)

Heaven: Christadelphians reject the literal heaven

promised by God. They argue that heaven is the
restored earth, with God reigning over His people,
and Jerusalem is its capital. The restored earth is
heaven for the saints. Going to heaven is a purely
gratuitous speculation.

Hell: Christadelphians reject the existence of hell.

Amended Christadelphians believe the wicked are
annihilated at death. Un-amended Christadelphains
believe those in Christ will be resurrected to
eternal life while the rest will remain unconscious in
the grave. They call this soul sleep. Everlasting
torment for sinners in literal hell is not acceptable
to the Christadelphians. Hell is substituted with a
system of conditional immortality.

Church: The word ecclesia is used by Christadelphians instead of Church. A Greek word, it is
usually translated church in English Bibles. It also
means a people called out which is the assembly
of believers. Christadelphian is a word created from
the Greek for Brethren in Christ (Brothers of
Christ). The name was coined by John Thomas,
the founder of this sect. But this false religion
: 86 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

has nothing to show they are brothers of Christ.

Christadelphians believe churches are autonomous.

Clergy: Christadelphians do not believe in a

hierarchical structure in religion. They do not have
paid clergy. Elected male volunteers conduct
services on a rotating basis. Members address each
other as brother and sister.

Worship Service: Sunday morning services include

worship with the Lords table (breaking of bread),
Bible study and a sermon. Sunday school is held
before this memorial meeting, for the children and
young adults. A mid-week class is held to study the
Bible in depth. All meetings and seminars are
conducted by lay members. Members gather in
each others homes, as early Christians did or in
rented buildings. A few ecclesias own buildings.
Christadelphians refuse to participate in any
military and police forces because they are
conscientious objectors. They do not vote in
political elections as they take direction from
Romans 13:1-4, which they interpret as meaning
that God puts into power those leaders He deems
worthy. To vote for candidates that do not win
an election would be considered to vote against
Gods will. To avoid the risk of such conflict,
Christadelphians abstain from voting.

Baptism: Christadelphians believe that baptism

is a requirement for salvation. So, baptism is
: 87 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

mandatory. They believe that members are to be

baptized by immersion at an age of accountability,
after they go through a pre-baptism interview
about the sacrament. Baptism is a visible demonstration of repentance and contrition. Baptism is
a symbolic participation in Christs sacrifice and
resurrection. They deny the validity of any baptism
other than their own. Communion, in the form of
bread and wine, is shared at the Sunday memorial
service.

Salvation: When yielded to repent and be

baptized into the name of Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins a person is born of water
through the influence of truth, having entered the
name his sins are covered, his transgressions
hid, his past life is cancelled, and he commences
a life of probation that may finally constitute
him a son of God. Only probation. There is no
assurance of salvation in Christadelphianism.

Often the cults hold a mixture of good, biblical

doctrines and at the same time advocate dangerous
heresies that are contrary to Biblical truths. So, the true
Christians have to be extremely careful in separating
the good from the bad and identify the cults that hold
heretical teachings. A believer has to beware of these
false doctrines and prevent them from coming to our
houses and misleading our children (2 John 7-12).
At the same time, it is our responsibility to witness to
them in Christian love and seek them to win for
Christ.

Helpful hints to confront Christadelphianism

In this brief article I am unable to refute in detail
all the heresies of Christadelphians. However, here are
some Bible Verses to prove they are wrong.
Trinity is Scriptural: A triune God (God in three
persons) is explicitly and repeatedly taught in the
Bible (Isa. 6:7,8; 63:8-10; Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14;
Phil. 2:1,2; Gen. 1:26; 19:24).
Jesus Christ is God Eternal. He is sinless. He existed
from Eternity (1 John 4:2,3; John 8:24,58; 17:5;
20:28; Romans 9:5; Heb. 1:3,6,8; cf Exo. 3:14; John
1:1-3,14).
Holy Spirit is a person, the third personage of the
Trinity. He is not a mere force or energy (Matt.
28:19; John 7:39; 14:16,17,26; 15:26; 16:17,13; 1 Cor.
12:11).
Devil (Satan) has personality. Satan is real, he exists
and he is not merely an idea (Job 1:6-12; Zech.
3:1-2; Matt. 4:1-11; Acts 5:3; Rev. 20:1-3).
Atonement of Christ is for the redemption of
sinners (Isa. 53:5; Matt. 20:28; Romans 5:9; 1 Cor.
15:3; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24; 3:18; 1 John 1:7; 2:2).
Heaven is literal, real and eternal (Luke 23:43; John
14:1-3; 2 Cor. 5:8; Phil. 2:23; 1 Thes. 4:17).
Hell is literal, real and eternal (Matt. 10:28; 25:46;
Luke 12:4,5; 16:19-31; Rev. 20:10-15).
Baptism is in obedience to the Lords Command.
Baptism is not for salvation. Baptism is for the
: 89 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

saved ones (Matt. 28:18-20; John 3:36; 1 Peter

3:20,21; 1 John 5:13).

Salvation is by Grace through Faith. Not by works;

nor by baptism. Salvation is only though Jesus
Christ (Rom. 3:24-28; 4:4-5; Eph. 2:8-9; John 5:24).

If Jesus is not God he cannot become our savior

and Lord. If he is not sinless he could not become
our substitutionary sacrifice. Jesus Christ alone had the
dual nature. He was 100% God and 100% man at
the same time. As man he became our representative
and died on the cross of Calvary for our sins. As God
he rose again from the dead, ascended into the
heavens and is coming again for our glorification.
As a man Jesus sympathizes with all our needs like
hunger, thirst, pains, poverty, grief, sadness, loneliness
and rejection. As God, Jesus Christ solves all our
problems and provides all our needs. He made the
lame to walk, made the deaf to hear, healed the sick,
made the lepers clean, calmed the stormy sea, raise the
dead and He rose again from the dead.
We do have such a wonderful, all-sufficient and
loving God. It is sad that Christadelphians have a
different kind of Jesus. Their name shares the same
root as Christian but they are not Christians.
Christadelphianism is a false religion.
Let me sum up the false doctrines of this cult in
seven points:

It robs Christ of His deity, pre-existence and

singleness.
: 90 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

It degrades the Holy Spirit to the level of an

impersonal force/power.
It denies personality to the Devil.
It caricatures the atonement.
It denies the eternal punishment of sinners.
It advocates soul sleep.
It robs the truth of assurance of salvation.

Is a Christadelphian a Christian? No. Why not? He

does not confess Jesus as Lord (1 Cor. 12:3). Do they
have the Holy Spirit in them? No. Why not? (1 Cor.
12:3). Because they do not have the Holy Spirit they
are unwilling to accept Christ as LORD.
Should we welcome such people to our homes and
entertain them? No. Why not? Because we are warned
by the Apostle John (2 John 7-11). Dearly beloved,
please safeguard your home and your church from the
creeping in of these wolves in lambs clothing.
Please fight the good fight of faith and proclaim to
everyone that Christadelphians are not brothers of
Christ but enemies of Christ.
At the same time, in Christs love, let us pray for
their salvation and strive hard to witness to them and
lead them to Jesus Christ, the only Savior and Lord.
Let us realize that most of them have become
victims/fallen prey to this evil teaching because of the
deception of Satan. Let us love them and witness to
them.

UNITED PENTECOSTAL
CHURCH (U.P.C.)
Although

its leaders like it to be known as the

Apostolic Church, the United Pentecostal Church
(UPC) has no Apostolic traits. Even Evangelical
Pentecostal groups have labeled UPC as a CULT.
My intention in this brief article is to educate
Christians about the false doctrines of this group and
to equip true Christians to witness to the dear people
who are under the false beliefs of the UPC.
History:
The UPCs doctrine is a rebirth of an old heresy
called Sabellianism, which was refuted and rejected by
the early Christian Church. Sabellius, a third century
Roman theologian, taught that God was one person,
not three, and that He appeared in modes or
manifestations - as the Father, as the Son or as the
Holy Spirit. For Sabellius, the Father alone was truly
God; the Son and the Spirit being repetitions of Him
in other modes or manifestations.
A rebirth of Sabellianism in a different form took
place in 1913 during the Apostolic Faith World Wide
Pentecostal Camp meeting in Arroyo Seco, just
outside of Los Angeles, California, USA. During a
: 92 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

baptismal service in the camp, R.E. McAlister, a

Canadian evangelist, exhorted the people to reject the
Triune formula (in the name of the Father, the Son
and the Holy Spirit) and baptize believers in the name
of the Lord Jesus Christ. One Mr. John G. Scheppe
was so inspired by this exhortation that he spent the
whole night in prayer. In the early dawn of the
following day, Mr. Scheppe started shouting Jesus
Only. He claimed that God had shown him the truth
about baptism in the name of Jesus only. Scheppes
revelation became the impetus for McAlister and
Frank Ewart (a Pentecostal pastor) to discuss in
detail Matt. 28:19, Acts 2:38. Matt. 17:8, John 10:30;
14:13, Phil. 2;9 and Col. 3:17. After the study of these
passages, these three people started advocating Jesus
Only movement.
McAlister and Ewart adopted the modalistic
interpretation of the Godhead. Unlike Sabellius, they
made Jesus - instead of the Father - the one God. To
them, Jesus was the one who manifested Himself
as the Father, as the Son or as the Holy Spirit.
The historic Trinitarian theology was repudiated
as unbiblical. This was the birth of Oneness
Pentecostalism or Jesus Only cult - which today is
popularly known as United Pentecostal Church.
Their Heresies:
1. They teach Uni-personality of God rejecting
the Biblical Doctrine of Trinity. They believe
that three offices are filled by one person - JESUS.
: 93 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

In other words, Father, Son and the Holy Spirit are

the three modes or manifestations of Jesus Christ.
This makes UPC a Cult.
2. They advocate water Baptism as a requirement for
salvation. A sinner, who truly repents and puts
his trust in the Lord for salvation, should also
be baptized in the name of Jesus only to complete
salvation.
3. They reject the baptism formula, in the name of the
father, the Son and the Holy Ghost (Matt. 28:19) and
baptize candidates in the name of Jesus alone.
4. They teach that initial Baptism of the Holy Spirit
is at conversion and it is evidenced by speaking in
tongues.

How to refute their False Teachings?

In this study, we will discuss in detail how to
correct UPC followers of their heretical Jesus Only
doctrine, which rejects Trinity.
We will only briefly comment on the other three
incorrect doctrines to state our position, because those
beliefs are shared by some Christians because of
interpretive difference.
1. God in three persons vs. Jesus only
The UPC argues that the Trinity doctrine is
unbiblical because the term Trinity is not found in the
Bible. True, Trinity is a word coined in the Apostolic
: 94 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

age to signify God in Three Persons. However, the

truth of God existing in three persons is amply
recorded in the Bible. There are other words not found
in the bible which are key concepts of our faith.
Rapture is not a word found in the Bible. But we
use that word because we believe that the Church
will be caught up together when Jesus comes again.
(1 Thes. 4:17) Caught up together = Rapture. The
word Monotheism is not in the Bible. But we believe
in one God which is monotheism.
UPC followers argue that the origin of the concept
of trinity is in paganism and that we have borrowed
this belief. The virgin birth, incarnation, blood
atonement and resurrection of the dead were beliefs
in pagan religions. Shall we discard the Biblical doctrine
of these truths, just because these beliefs also were in
the world in myths, superstitions, traditions and manmade stories? Shall we throw away those words just
because the world used it in a wrong sense? What
about the names of the days of the week: Sunday,
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and
Saturday? Did they not originate from heathenism?
Will you stop using these names for the days?
Trinity (One God in three persons) is clearly stated
in the Bible.
Deut. 6:4 reads, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God
is one Lord. The Hebrew word for God is Elohim
which is plural. The Hebrew word for ONE in the
above passage is echad, which is translated to mean
: 95 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

a corporate oneness. This means, God is a plural

number of persons, yet one. A clear meaning of the
Hebrew word echad may be also found in the
celebration of the Jewish Passover. The three pocketed
matza holder used during Passover is referred to as an
echad. Consequently, it is the middle of the three
matzas that is broken during the ceremony. The Holy
Trinity of God and the brokenness of the second
person of the Trinity are clearly revealed in this ancient
tradition. The echad, the one true God, is plural
and that is the Holy Trinity.
There is a plurality of persons in the Trinity (Deity):
Gen. 1:26; 3:22; Isa. 6:8; 48:16-18; Zech. 12:10. The
Bible speaks of one Godhead with three persons.
Each has individuality, self esteem (ego) and each one
is God within one Godhead.
Notice the repetition holy in Isa. 6:3: Holy, holy,
holy is the Lord of hosts. It glorifies the Father, Son and
Spirit.
The Father is God (John 15:17-24). The Father
cannot be the manifestation of the Son. One person
can be both a father and a son, but never is anyone
his own father!
The Son is God (John 1:1,14). The most serious
silliness/foolishness of the UPC movement is the
failure to recognize the subject-object relationship
among the members of Godhead. If there is no
object, one person is talking to himself and that is
: 96 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

meaningless. The very existence of an I and You

relationship denotes personality.
Lets look at some references and see the silliness
of having no object. If Jesus spoke to Himself it has
no sense. It is absurd. That will make Jesus a lunatic.
Was Jesus imitating the Fathers voice in Matt.
3:17? And suddenly a voice came from heaven saying ,
This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Who said, you are my beloved Son in whom
I am well pleased? (Mark 1:11). If Jesus was imitating
another voice claiming to be the Father, is he not a
fraud?
In Matt. 17:5, suddenly a voice came out of the cloud
saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Hear Him. Was this said by Jesus Christ? How can
it make sense? In verse 4 it is clear that Jesus and the
three disciples were on mount Harmon. Where was
the Father if the Son said this?
Father forgive them is a sham if Jesus talked
to Himself (Luke 23:34).
Into thy hands I commit my spirit, Jesus said in Luke
26:46. If there was no Father, then saying this would
make Jesus pathetic and a fraud.
The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3,4). The Holy Spirit
is a person, not a phantom, mode or manifestation of
Jesus Christ as the Oneness Pentecostal Cult UPC
claims.
: 97 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

The Holy Spirit is a distinct person from the

Father and Son. Note the I and He relationship in
John 14:16 & 26; 16:7,8,13,14. The Holy Spirit is not
a force or power. He is a person. He is God.
Acts 13:2 reads, As they ministered to the Lord and
fasted, the Holy Spirit said, Now separate to Me, Barnabas
and Saul for the work to which I have called them.
The Holy Spirit is a distinct person and HE (the Holy
Spirit has all the qualities and characteristics of a
person.
Gods oneness is a composite unity, not an absolute
unity (1 Tim. 2:5; Gen. 2:24; 34:16; Num. 13:23...).
I and my Father are one (John 10:33). ONE
equals EN in the Greek is gender neutral and not
masculine. It means one in essence or nature, not one
in person (ego/individuality/self).
We are one means in essence, in nature, in goal,
in purpose, in focus. We have already seen that the
same is true of the Hebrew word Echad which is
translated as ONE, showing the corporate oneness.
2. Is Baptism necessary to complete salvation?
NO. The Sinner is saved by regeneration, by
repentance of sin, and by belief in Jesus Christ as
Savior and Lord (Rom. 10:9,10,13; John 1:12; 3:16 and
5:24).
Paul said to the Philippian Jailor, Believe on the Lord
Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household
(Acts 16:31).
: 98 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved

Paul wrote in Romans 10:13.
Today salvation has come to this house Jesus said to
Zacchaeus (Luke 19:9). He was not baptized when the
Lord pronounced this.
Today you shall be with me in paradise said Jesus to
the dying thief (Luke 23:43). He died without
baptism, but he went to heaven. Baptism is a public
witness of our inward faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism is
in obedience to Christs command. Baptism is not for
salvation; it is our obedience to His command because
of our salvation.
The UPC cult quotes Acts 2:38 to argue for
Baptismal Regeneration. That verse says, Repent and
let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive
the gift of the Holy Spirit (NKJV). Peters message
climaxed with essentially the same exhortation as
preached by John the Baptist - the baptism of repentance
for the remission of sins (Luke 3:3). The difference is
that now - and ever since - both repentance and
baptism are to be in the name of Jesus Christ. This
means Christ is the only one who can provide
remission of sins. This also means that the baptism
has to be done because of the command and because
of the authority of Jesus Christ. It is not that baptism
is required for the remission of sins, but rather that
baptism is always inseparably associated in Scripture
with true repentance and faith.

The word translated as for is the Greek word eis

that can be translated in two different ways. One:
in order to be, in order to have or in order to get.
Two: because of , as a result of or with regard to.
The Bible repeatedly and strongly teaches that the
Repentance of sin and faith in Christ are the only
essentials for obtaining forgiveness of sins and
salvation. Therefore, the word for can only mean
because of the forgiveness of sins or as a result of
the forgiveness of sins. It cannot mean in order to
get the forgiveness of sins.
Let us check this sentence and try to interpret the
correct meaning: take two tablets of aspirin for your
headache. If you argue that the word for should be
interpreted as in order to get, then the statement will
read, take two tablets of aspirin in order to get your
headache. This interpretation is ridiculous because it
is a fact that the purpose of aspirin tablets is to
remove the headache. The correct interpretation will
be, take two tablets of aspirin because of your
headache.
Numerous Bible verses state and explain that
salvation is by repentance of sin and faith in Christ
(John 1:12, 3:14-18, 5:24, 11:25,26; Acts 10:9,10,13,43,
13:39, 16:31, 26:18; Eph.1: 12-14). We do not need to
add anything more for the forgiveness of sins. Eph.
2:8 & 9 reads, For by grace you have been saved through
faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of
works lest any man should boast. Baptism is a human
: 100 :

work. Adding baptism to repentance and faith as a

requirement for salvation is a heresy. Peters next two
sermons to unbelievers speak of forgiveness with the
act of repentance and faith in Christ without even
mentioning baptism (Acts 3:17-26; 4:8-12).
A verse in the Bible has to be interpreted in the
light of the immediate context and also considering the
general teaching in the whole Bible. We should not
pick out a verse and create a doctrine based on the
superficial appearance of the verse. We must follow the
correct hermeneutics.
3. What is the formula in administering Baptism?
Matt. 28:19 is the formula, In the name of the Father,
Son and the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38, 8:16, 10:48 talk about the authority for
baptism, In the name of Jesus Christ. This means
By the authority of Christ, because of the command
of Christ. The formula (in the name of the Father,
Son and the Holy Spirit) tells the HOW of baptism.
In the name of Jesus Christ speaks of the WHY of
baptism. We baptize born again believers by the
authority given to us by Jesus Christ. We administer
baptism in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy
Spirit.
4. Is Speaking in tongues the incontrovertible
evidence of baptism by the Holy Spirit?
No, it is not. The question in 1 Cor. 11:30 Do
all speak with tongues? draws the clear answer, NO.
: 101 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

1 Cor. 12:13 reads For by one Spirit we were all baptized

into one body - whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free
- and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. But all
of them did not speak in tongues.
Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a historical fact that
took place on the day of Pentecost for the formation
of the Church, the body of Christ. The moment a
sinner receives Christ as his savior, he is immersed
into that body. There is no scriptural demand or
instruction that a believer should wait for the baptism
of the Holy Spirit. Please note the three instances of
speaking in tongues during the transition period of
the formation of the Church.
Acts 2:4: This was the day of Pentecost, the day
when Baptism of the Holy Spirit took place. The
Church was born that day. As a sign, God gave the
ability for speaking in other tongues. The Disciples
spoke in other languages, though they had not learnt
those languages.
(Some people interpret this to read that Apostles
spoke in their own Aramaic language and the people
of 15 or 16 other languages understood what the
Apostles said in their own language. That cannot be.
If the Apostle spoke in one language and the heathens
understood in their own language, the gift was given
by God to the heathens, to the hearers.)
Acts 10:44-48: This incident took place in the home
of Cornelius, the Gentile. This incident confirmed
that Gentiles also are part of the body of Christ, the
: 102 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Church, just as the believers from the Jewish

community in Acts 2.
Acts 19:1-7: These were the 12 disciples of John
the Baptist. They had taken the baptism of John. John
had told them of Jesus Christ who will baptize them
in the Holy Spirit. When they heard the Word from
Paul, they believed and were baptized in water.
Then he laid his hands on them and they received
the Holy Spirit, with the sign of speaking in other
tongues, just as the believers from the Jewish
community and Gentile community. It was confirmed
that these people also (the disciples of John the
Baptist) have become the members of the body of
Christ, the Church.
So, these are the three incidents of speaking in
tongues mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles.
Putting these three incidents together, we conclude
that during that transition period of the formation
of the Church, speaking in tongues was given by God
as evidence to prove (confirm) that Jews, Gentiles,
Samaritans and the disciples of John the Baptist were
welcomed as members of the Church of Jesus Christ.
Now as it is written in Gal. 3:26-28 & 1 Cor. 12:13,
there is only one body and that consists of Jews and
gentiles, male and female. This phenomenon is no
longer required because at new birth a believer becomes
the member of the body of Christ that was formed
by the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
: 103 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Acts 8:1-17: In this portion of scripture, it is

recorded that the people of Samaria believed the
preaching of the Evangelist Philip. Peter was along
with him. Then they laid hands on the new converts
from Samaria. And they received the Holy Ghost
(v: 17). Though there is no mention of them speaking
in tongues, there is that possibility because this
incident also took place in the transition period of the
formation of the Church. Samaritans were looked
upon like dogs (untouchables, low caste) by Jews. But
these people also became members of the Church,
the body of Christ. So there is no difference between
Jewish believers, Gentile believers and Samaritan
Believers.
Mightily used saints of God like Billy Graham,
William Carey, Oswald J. Smith, Adoniram Judson,
David Brainerd, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon,
D.L. Moody, John Huss, Hudson Taylor and multitudes
of others did not speak in tongues. Would you dare
to say they were not baptized by the Holy Spirit?
Would you say they were less spiritual than you?
Advocates of tongue speaking quote the following
Old Testament verses and excite ignorant Christians to
speak in tongues (Isa. 28:11, 33:19; Ps. 114:1 cf: 1 Cor.
14:21).
But we know that these verses refer to the people
of Israel listening to the languages of the heathen
tribes whom they met and among whom they had to
live at times in their journeys. These verses do not
: 104 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

speak about Israelites speaking in other tongues that

did not exist in the world. They were communicating
in the languages of the heathens with much difficulty
(like stammering) because they were not trained in
those languages.
In the Gospels there is only one reference for
speaking in new tongues (Mark 16:17-18). The usage
here is new tongues and that means the existing
languages that were new to the apostles. They are not
unknown languages as some people claim. The word
unknown is added in some translations. But that
unknown is printed in italics to show the word was
not in the original text, but added for clarification that the languages were unknown to the Apostles/
Disciples, but spoken by others.
The world famous theologian and Bible expositor
Oswald Sanders wrote, Most of the tongue speaking today
is not from God, not from Satan but from the emotional ecstasy
of the speaker. It is possible to excite people to a high
level of emotional extreme, persuade them to utter
words they do not understand and then make them
believe that is speaking in tongues.
If it is not from God, the tongue speaking will be
one of these: Emotional ecstasy, deception by Satan
or purely the imagination of the tongue speaker.
I have seen extreme Pentecostal and Charismatic
leaders training believers how to speak in tongues!
People were asked to repeat some lines of a song
numerous times very fast; they were asked to repeat
: 105 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Hallelujah hundreds of times as fast as they could;

they were asked to keep their mouths half open and
their tongues kept in a particular position. I knew this
whole gimmick is an artificial and human mechanism,
to manufacture an unknown tongue.

FAITH HEALING MOVEMENTS
Sickness is a universal problem. From time immemorial man has been in search of cures for his various
illnesses.
Some Christians who are labeled charismatics do
make claims that they have the special gift of healing.
They publicize their healing campaigns, boast of
miraculous healings and project sensational reports with
exaggerated statistics of miraculous healings. Large
crowds gather in such public meetings expecting to be
healed or to witness healing Caught up in emotional
ecstasy at times, the healer and the sick announce a
miraculous healing, only to be proved false in a day or
two.
In India, public opinion has often come down
heavily upon these kinds of campaigns, resulting
in a prohibition of Christian public meetings by
the government. This is one of the causes for the
increasing restrictions against Christian gatherings in
public places in India. We Christians have brought
harm upon ourselves because of such deceptive claims,
sensational reports and false promises.
This is one of the reasons that motivated me to
write on this topic of Divine healers and their
miraculous healings.
: 107 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Illness has caused/is causing much suffering,

distress and death to humanity. No one - not even so
- called healers - has escaped from sickness, injury or
some other physical infirmity in their lifetime. How
wonderful and rewarding it would be if every Christian
could perform miraculous healing! They could simply
walk on the streets or move between the rows of beds
in a hospital, and the sick would be miraculously healed.
But this is not happening.
A close look at our Modern Faith Healers

Hobart Freeman founded the Faith Assembly, in

Indiana, USA, in the 1960s. He taught his followers
not to consult doctors, or take medicines or go to
hospitals. About 90 of his church members died.
Freeman was charged with negligent homicide. He
died in 1984 of pneumonia and heart failure.

William Branham, a reputed American faith healer,

died in 1965 of injuries from an automobile
accident.

A.A. Allen, another American faith healer, died in

1967 of sclerosis of the liver. He was an alcoholic.

Kathryn Khulman, a prominent American healer

who hosted the weekly US TV show I Believe in
Miracles in the 1960s and 70s, died of heart failure
in 1976 after battling the disease for twenty years.

Ruth Carter Stapleton, faith healing sister of US

President Jimmy Carter, died of cancer in 1983.
: 108 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

John Wimber, who claimed to have healed many

people in 1985 conferences in London, died of a
brain hemorrhage in 1997 following a recent
coronary bypass surgery.

Charles Fox Parham is the originator of the

Pentecostal movement of miraculous healing.
He created the entire system of Pentecostal/
charismatic faith healing. From that we have the
following prominent faith healers:
- Aimee Semple McPherson
- E.W. Kenyon
- Kathryn Kuhlman
- William Branham
- Oral Roberts
- T.L. Osborn
- Kenneth Hgin
- Kenneth Copeland
- Fred Price
- Jerry Savelle
- Charles Capps
- Norvel Hayes
- Robert Tilton
- Benny Hinn
- Larry Lea
: 109 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

And from Catholic Charismatics we have:- Father John Bertolucci [?? I couldnt find the
spelling you had in a Google search, but not
sure this is the same guy]
- Francis MacNutt
They all headlined healing in their meetings. But the
probable results of faith healing varies by healer!

Some say God heals all sicknesses.

Some say infirmities are for Gods purposes to be

fulfilled.

Some equate sickness with sin.

Some blame the Devil.

Some claim to have the spiritual gift of healing.

Some say they have no unusual gifts - God simply

uses us.

Some use physical touch.

Some simply speak forth.

Some anoint with oil.

Some simply pray for the healing.

Some send out prayer clothes (Acts 19:12)

Some spit on their hand and rub it on the head

of the sick.

Some make clay balls with spittle and place on the

infirmity.
: 110 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

There are other gimmicks too:

- Oral Roberts asked for Seed Faith Offering.
Money donated to him was said to bring
personal healing or miracles.
- Robert Tilton pledges special healings and
financial miracles to those who send him money.
The larger the gift, the better the miracle.
- Pat Robertson peers into his camera as if he
sees into others living rooms and announces
that somebody has been healed that very
moment.
- Benny Hinn releases his anointing on a room
full of people.

In their meetings people fall over as they are

slain in the spirit. People jump from wheelchairs
shouting that they are healed.

These healers make tall claims but their proof

cannot be tested. Not one of todays faith healers
can produce unquestionable proof of the miracles
they performed. They are suspected frauds - there
is no medically confirmed healing.

Faith healing movements are modern developments.

They are always ready to profit by someones
misfortune. As the saying goes, One mans pain
is another mans gain.

Space limitations do not allow me to list the names

of the hundreds of such crooks that are popular in
: 111 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

India - especially in the states of Kerala, Andhra

Pradesh and Mizoram where the Christian population
is higher than other states.
The visits, video shows and messages from these
healers can be seen and heard in most hospitals where
the sick people longing for healing send money to
them with the hope of healing. These healers play
on the emotions of the distressed and give them false
hope.
A faith healer in south India, Dinakaran,
accumulated money by this kind of deceptive tactics
and has become immensely rich. He assured my
cousin sister that she would surely be healed of cancer
if she kept his handkerchief under her pillow. He
demanded one thousand rupees for it and she sent it.
In three months the young lady died of cancer,
holding onto the handkerchief and the false promise
of a greedy man. The daughter of this miracle worker
died in a road accident. But he refused to bury her
for three days, claiming that his daughter would rise
from the dead. Eventually, the police had to come and
force him to bury her body.
The healing campaigns today are without any
justification or parallel found in the New Testament.
The prophetic scriptures warn us that the closing days
of this age will see a revival of supernatural/counterfeit
phenomena (2 Thes. 2:9,10). There shall rise false
Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs
and wonders; in so much that, if it were possible, they shall
: 112 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before (Matt.
24:24,25).
It pains my heart to see this happening in my own
country. When Benny Hinn visits India to perform his
so-called miracles, Evangelical Christians from all over
the country travel hundreds of miles to throng to his
campaigns in the cities of India. Gods strict punishment is reserved for these false prophets, though they
are successful and popular for the moment.
Zathangvunga and Laldenga were two self-styled
evangelists who crept into the evangelical churches of
Manipur state while I was living in north east India.
Both of them claimed hundreds of miraculous
healings. But not a single incident was proved. Neither
survived long. They have disappeared into oblivion,
though they wreaked havoc among the innocent and
sincere Christians who were not well founded on the
word of God.
Please do not misunderstand the meaning of my
treatise. Healings are happening today. God heals
whom He wills. God heals where He wills. But I do
not believe the Biblical gift of healing is present today.
GIft of Healing

A gift is a special qualification granted by the Spirit

to every believer to empower him to serve within
the framework of the body of Christ.

A Spirit-given ability for Christian service.

The word Charismata used in Romans 1:11, 12:6

is not limited to speaking in tongues alone. It refers
to all the gifts mentioned by Paul. It is unbiblical to
magnify just one gift, such as the speaking in tongues
or miracles or healings as is singularly manifested in
charismatic movements.

How are these two related?

Talents can be avenues through which the Holy

Spirit uses a persons gifts.

For example, the developed talent of a Christian

singer along with his gift of encouragement
delights, inspires and encourages the saints.

The Spirit of God expresses Himself through a

mans in-born talents.

Possessing a natural talent doesnt mean that God

will use it.
In like manner - The Holy spirit may choose to
give a gift of speech to a person who has no natural
ability to speak.
- When a person becomes a Christian, the Spirit
may intensify that talent with a supernatural
power - heightening, reinforcing and transcending it for the edification of the saints.

- (Ref: Leslie B. Flynn - Nineteen Gifts of the Spirit.)

Paul speaks of the gifts of healing (1 Cor. 12:9).
The use of the plural healings, indicates there are
more than one healing - healing of the body and
healing of the mind-as there is an integral relationship
between them.
What is the gift of Healing?
The gift of healing is the ability to intervene in a
supernatural way as an instrument for the curing of
illness of a person.
- Jesus healed (Matt. 9:35)
- Peter healed ( Acts 3:6-8, 5:15,16, 9:32-41)
- Stephen healed (Acts 6:8)
- Paul healed ( Acts 8:6,7)
- The 70 messengers Jesus sent out also healed.
What the gift of healing does not do?

Does not heal everyones sickness.

- Paul himself was sick (1 Cor. 2:3; 2 Cor. 11:30;
12:5,7-10; Gal. 4:13).
- Epaphroditus was sick (Phil. 2:25-27).
- Timothy was sick (1 Tim. 5:23).
- Trophimus was sick (2 Tim. 4:20).

Paul knew that his gift of healing could not be

employed to heal his own illness. At times God allows
: 116 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

the person to remain sick for some time. At times the

Lord allows a terminal illness that causes death because
it is appointed for every man to die. Therefore the
gift does not heal every sickness.
Healing does not depend on the faith of the sick
person. It is wrong to say that lack of faith in a
sick person prevents healing (John 9:1-3). Often the
faith healers fail to heal the sick. To save face they
blame the sick person, saying, your faith is not
strong enough for your healing!
Some illnesses are due to personal sin (1 Cor. 11:30).
Illness or recovery - they conform the believer to
the image of Christ, which is the purpose of God for
the believer. Therefore, exercise healing according to
the will of God. Gods plan for our illness is to
advance divine glory and our maturity.
All healings are not of the gift of divine healing.
- Egyptian magicians (Ex. 7:11,12,22; 8:7; 2 Tim.
3:8).
- Demon power (Acts 8:9-11, 13:8-10).
Throughout the Christian era, many miracles of
physical healing have supposedly occurred both in
Roman Catholic and Protestant circles. Many Saints
have claimed to have curative power. Many sicknesses
today are likely - psychological. Two things happen in
this:
- Genuine cure for imaginary ills.
- Imaginary cures for genuine ills.
: 117 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Satanic powers, psychic powers, laying on of hands,

brown thumb treatment, etc. contribute to healings.
Therefore, the spiritual gift of healing does not
explain all cures. God answers prayers for healing apart
from anyone with the gift for healing.
The Epistles do not command us to heal people.
But surely we must be concerned about the well being
of others. Read the advice from the Apostle James
(5:14-16). In case of sickness what must believers do?
-

The sick must make the first move. His

responsibility is to inform the elders.

The elders respond to the call. No publicity, no

campaigns, no commercialization. It is a private
setting, private counseling, private confession of
faults one to another.

Apply medications. In those days oil was used for

soothing pain, restoring health as home remedies.
This oil was not for sacred anointing. The elders
should give the sick one a good rub-down and lead
in prayer. The elders do the work of a physician.
Today it can be a surgery, scientific techniques and
modern medicines. James advices both pills and
prayers.

Make the sick comfortable through medication.

Then pray. It is not more prayer and less
medication or more medication and less prayer.
We do our part and God does the rest.

Then the healing comes from the Lord.

: 118 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Forgiveness and healing: The Lord heals the total

person - both body and spirit. The sickness may
be due to some sin. Soul sickness is worse than
body sickness. Sickness of the soul must be healed
with that of the body. Take up thy bed and walk,
thy sins are forgiven thee.

This is the divinely ordered procedure of healing.

This is Gods method for the ministry of healing.
God heals today. He is not in need of healers.
Faith Healers
Faith healers teach that miraculous healing is
available for all through the atonement of Christ;
Surely He took up our infirmities and by His stripes
we are healed (Isa. 53:4,5). The context clearly proves
the healing of the spiritual illness and infirmities come
through atonement (death of Christ). Of course we
cannot withhold the glad tiding of bodily healing from
suffering humanity. There are convincing evidences and
well authenticated cases of Christs healing touch,
without external influences, upon His saints. If healing
is not universally available, then those who encourage
it through healing movements are taking people for
a ride through their cruel deception. These healers
know that sick people will give anything in return for
their recovery. They know that people often give
more importance to physical healing than to spiritual
healing. So, the healers goals of lucrative gain play
havoc in Christendom. Further, public meetings where
miraculous physical healings are announced draw larger
: 119 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

crowds. So, preachers who crave fame and popularity

include and emphasize physical healing in their
campaigns.
This requires a brief study on the subject in the
light of the scripture:
Healing in the Bible

a condition, If thou will keep all the statutes, I will
put none of these diseases upon thee.

(Ref: Dr. R.V. Bingham - The Bible and the Body quoted from Cults & Isms by Oswald Sanders, 1980.)
Often people fall sick because they neglect these
laws of health from God. There is no miraculous
healing for callous, careless, dirty living.
God does not will to heal every one

Prayer of faith of the elders saves the sick (James

5:14-18).

Healing is Gods work with or without means.

Service of physicians not prohibited (2 Kings 20:7;
Isa. 37:21 John 9:6-11; Mt. 9:12).

Healings in scripture were instantaneous, not

gradual as in present day healings. They were
complete and permanent. Gods Sovereignty is
shown in the healing (Mark 1:42; Matt. 8:15; Luke
7:15).

Healed only the Jews (Matt. 10:5-8).

God did not choose to heal (Phil. 2:25-30; 1 Tim.

5:23; 2 Tim. 4:20).

God refused to heal (2 Cor. 12:7-10).

God delivers the sick in two ways

- by removing the sickness (1 Cor. 10:13).
- by giving strength to bear it (2 Cor. 12:9).
Personal faith of the sick not always required
(Matt. 9:32; Mark 7:35; Luke 22:51).
: 121 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Christ did not confine his healing ministry to

believers as do the healers of our day (Matt. 4:24;
8:16).
God controls, modifies or suspends the laws of the
universe at His will. It is what God pleased to do.
How did Jesus heal?
Look at the healing ministry of Jesus:

He healed with a word or touch.

- Healing the centurions servant (Matt. 8:6-7,13).
- Healing the woman of chronic bleeding (Matt.
5:25-34).

He healed instantly (Matt. 8:13; Mark 5:29; Luke

17:14; 5:13; John 5:19; 9:1-7). No progressive
healing.

He healed everyone (Luke 4:40; 9:11). All who had

any sickness.

He healed the organic illnesses - not headache,

body pains, etc. - The cripple, the blind, the deaf.

He raised the dead (Luke 7:11-16; Mark 5:22-24;

35-43).

Healing by the Apostles

Healing in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 3:16).

Healing in the power of Jesus Christ (Acts 4:4).

- They healed with a word or touch (Acts 9:32-35).
: 122 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

- They healed instantly (Acts 3:2-8). Not in stages.

- They healed totally (Acts 9:34). Not on an
installment basis.
- They healed every one (Acts 5:12-16, 28:9). Did
not pick and choose.
- They healed organic diseases, which are
incurable. Eg. The man at the temple gate.
- They raised the dead (Acts 9:36-42; 20:9-12).
Our so-called healers today do not exhibit these
traits in their healing campaigns.
How does sickness come to Christians?

Sickness inflicted by God. Though unexplainable to

human logic, a loving God causes afflictions upon
His people. Children are born with infirmities. Some
are born blind, deaf or mute. Some suffer from
illness from birth (Ex. 4:11). Mans mind cannot
comprehend Gods sovereign plan. Many of Gods
servants suffered physical illness for many years.
These include: Hudson Taylor, John Calvin, David
Brainerd, Frances Ridley Havergal, Robert Murray
MCheyne, Charles Spurgeon, Fanny Crosby. Many
others died of prolonged illness while serving the
Lord actively. Their physical weaknesses were not
the sign of their spiritual decline.

Sickness inflicted by Satan (Luke 13:11-13; Job 1).

Jobs sickness was the outcome of his piety. God
: 123 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

permitted Satan to afflict him (Job 1:6-21; 2:1-10)

not because of his sin but because of his integrity.

Sickness inflicted by sin. Miriam got leprosy

because of rebellion (Num. 12). Israelites were
warned of pestilence if they sinned (Deut.
28:20-22). They need to seek Gods forgiveness.
In counseling the sick, care must be taken not to
falsely accuse someone of sin in his/her life
without careful and prayerful self-examination (John
9:1-3). In some cases it may be of sin. Chastening
by God takes place in such cases. In other cases
it may be that God is shaping and sharpening
him/her for Gods glory. Therefore it is cruel to
accuse the sick for their sin or faithlessness.

God heals because He is the healer (Ex. 15:26).

God heals if our requests are made according to

His will (Matt. 21:22; John 14:13-14, 16:24; 1 John
5:14).

God heals in His own way

in answer to prayer.

in order to reveal His Glory.

in order to confirm that He is compassionate.

- God heals in His own time.
- God heals by His own means.
- God heals for His own Glory
: 124 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

- God heals in His own Sovereign will and

pleasure.
Let no man employ his own gimmicks, for his
popularity and profits sake.
Beware of so-called faith healers and miracle

SATANISM

(Church of Satan)

W hen

I started writing on cults, I thought

I would not write on Satan Worship because
I considered it a false religion like many other religions
in the world. I thought that Satan worship was
confined to the west. However, in recent years worship
of Satan has captured thousands of youths of north
east Indian States like Mizoram, Nagaland and
Manipur. These young men and women have come
out of evangelical churches and became victims of
Satanism and have started establishing Satans churches.
I have not seen any Christian preachers, theologians
or apologists withstanding the onslaught of this enemy
to safeguard our churches, especially the youths of the
church. Therefore, I am compelled to write on this
topic, though briefly, pointing out its origin, beliefs,
and dangers. Also, I want to provide scriptural
references to fight against this enemy of the Church.

A quick look at Satanism

Its Origin:
The worship of Satan, or the occult, is as ancient
as humanity. But a father of widespread satanic
: 126 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

practices in the 20th century is Anton LaVey, a former

police photographer. He announced the birth of a
Church of Satan on April 30, 1966. People figured that
he was just another San Francisco fanatic. Three years
later LaVey added life to his dream by publishing a
Satanic Bible. This is a manual of how to worship
Satan. Nearly a million copies were sold. As of 2015,
the book is in its 30th printing.
Its Attractions:
Satanism attracts the angry and the powerless.
Its followers are those who feel that they are misfits.
They are lured by promises of power, friendship, drugs
and sex. Youths in Christian churches who are not truly
saved, not fed spiritually, those who are discontent and
looking for a life of pleasure and earthly fulfillments,
easily fall prey to this dangerous cult. Much of this is
happening because Church leaders and preachers have
not given proper biblical teachings in their churches.
Its differences with Christianity
Satanism is Christianity reversed. It takes every
Christian teaching and reverses it. For example,
Christianity teaches love and kindness. Satanism
teaches hate and selfishness. Satanism repeats the
Lords Prayer in reverse. Satanism lauds greed and
revenge. Satanism says humans are just another species
of animal. Satanism teaches that all the sensual cravings
of man should be fed without any restriction.
: 127 :

Its Status Today

About 10% of American youths are followers of
Satanism. This is a shocking number. Two percent of
them are heavily involved. The estimates run as high
as 10,000 (ten thousand) small groups in North
America. The occult-related crimes tell that the
movement is ever-growing.
In India, there are satanic worshippers present in
the northeastern hill states. The movement is fast
growing in these states traditionally known as Christian
states - where people converted to Christianity from
animistic backgrounds.
The Background
Satanism as he wrote of it, was not an original LaVey
idea. His inspiration and materials came from Edward
Alexander Crowley, 1875, in the UK. Crowley was the
son of devout Plymouth Brethren parents. His
teachings so shocked people that they called him The
Beast. Crowley was an ardent worshipper of Satan.
His teaching is summed up by two of his quotes:
1. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the
law.
2. Good is evil and evil is good.
Crowley preached and practiced human sacrifice.
He was accused of sacrificing his own grown son in
a ritual as part of a Black Mass. Much of the Satanism
in North America is rooted and built on voluminous
writings of Anton LaVey and Alexander Crowley.
: 128 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

These writings made Satanism more popular among

the youth.
Satanism is Christianity in reverse and not only
theologically speaking. They memorize Lords Prayer
backward. They quote Psalm 23 backward. They spell
SATAN backward NATAS and LIVE backward
for EVIL.
They also distort the Old Testament sacrificial
system by mutilating and killing animals and humans.
(Jerry Johnson, The Edge of Evil: The rise of
Satanism in North America.)
Satanism is expressed in various ways:
Black Magic
Black Mass Drug Cultures
Blood Sacrifice Witch craft Sex clubs
Traditional Satanism
The worship of a personal and powerful Devil is
central to traditional Satanism. It involves rejecting
Christ and choosing Lucifer.
Satanism exists only where Christianity exists. It is
a religion founded upon the principles which
Christianity rejects and does everything Christians
speak or do, but in reverse.
The Modern Satanism
There is a new humanistic Satanism emerging
today, Modern Satanism. The most famous is the
Church of Satan. The emphasis of this cult is on
: 129 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

materialism and hedonism (doctrine of pursuing

pleasure). Satan is more of a symbol than a reality in
this religion. This cult is interested in the carnal and
worldly pleasures mankind offers. Pleasure seeking is
the philosophy of their life.
Nine Statements if Satanic Belief
1. Satan represents indulgence, instead of abstinence.
2. Satan represents vital existence, instead of spiritual
pipe dreams.
3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom, instead of
hypocritical self-deceit.
4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it,
instead of love wasted on ingrates.
5. Satan represents vengeance, instead of turning the
other cheek.
6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible,
instead of concern for psychic vampires.
7. Satan represents man as just another animal,
sometimes better, more often worse than those
that walk on all fours - who, because of his divine
spiritual and intellectual development, has become
the most vicious animal of all.
8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they
lead to physical, mental or emotional gratification.
9. Satan has been the best friend the church has ever
had, as he has kept it in business all these years.
: 130 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

(Quoted from Misguiding Lights, Stephen M. Miller.)

This is a sensually gratifying philosophy that
rebellious youth love to follow.
According to LaVeys Gospel:
Satanism is a selfish religion.
It believes in greed.
It believes in selfishness.
It believes in all lustful thoughts that motivate man.
This is mans natural feelings.
Three Primary Rituals Satanists Practice

Compassion Ritual to help someone: The

Compassion Ritual sees Satan as a benevolent being
ready to help those who put their trust in him.
Satanists practice this ritual to help someone outside
the group facing problems related to health,
finance, education, etc.

Hex Ritual to hurt someone: The Hex Ritual

shows the vindictiveness of Satanists. The target of
this ritual does not need to believe in the magical/
occultist powers. Most Hex Rituals are performed
upon the target in the early morning hours, because
morning hours are the times the subconscious
mind is dreaming and is more responsive for
outside influences.

Love Ritual to put a spell on some one you

want: The Love Ritual is simply sexual love in
: 131 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

action, practiced in their sheltered nook where

meetings and ritual performances are held. The
person performing the rite engages in sex as a part
of the ritual.
These rituals are as important to Satanists as
baptism and Lords Supper are to Christians.

Satanists believe that by killing something, the life

force is transferred from the sacrifice to the
worshipper. Therefore sacrifice plays an important
role in Satanism.

Satanists believe that terrifying and torturing the

sacrifice first increases a persons strength.

Satanists claim that they absorb the power of the

sacrifice by eating the animal or drinking the blood.

In public the Satanists keep their distance from

illegal activities but in the secret of their coven they
are more dangerous.
Human Sacrifice
Satanists sacrifice humans. Satanisms teachings
permit human sacrifice.
: 133 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

For highest spiritual working one must accordingly choose

that victim which contains the greatest and purest force. A male
child, perfect in innocence and of high intelligence is the most
satisfactory and suitable victim. Crowley in his book
Magik.
The only time a Satanist would perform a human
sacrifice would be if it were to serve a two-fold
purpose:

To release the magicians wrath in the throwing of

a curse.

To dispose of a totally obnoxious and deserving

individual.

Though Satanic teachings permit human sacrifices,

they disassociate themselves from criminals. This
indeed is a contradiction.

True Satanists do not believe in breaking the

law. (This indeed is a paradox. Satanists contradict
themselves.)

But the police records show that these statements

are lies.
At the very outset we see clearly that these claims
are self-contradictory, because human sacrifice itself is
a criminal act and it is breaking the law.
How the Satanists recruit people
Teenagers are the most vulnerable, especially those
who feel themselves misfits.
: 134 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

To a disillusioned teen, a coven is pseudo family,

is secretive, tight knit, loyal and protective.

They look for whatever is lacking in a persons life.

The recruiters promise to fill this need. It may be
sex, drugs, power, companionship, etc.

The recruits are drugged, videotaped in sexual acts,

led in prayer to Satan to invite demons into their
bodies. The prayer is sealed with a blood ritual such
as the drinking of blood.

The initiation ritual into Satanism include:

Visiting graveyard in the dead of the night.
Walking across man-sized crosses.
Denouncing any belief in Christ.
Drinking the blood of animals that have been
skinned alive!

There are much more secretive associations and

practices.

The recruits do not dare to inform anyone. The

videotapes becomes a tool to blackmail them.

Study on Satanism cannot be complete without the

inclusion of a lesson on Satan himself.
A child of God cannot be touched by the hexes
and rituals of Satanism. The power of God is greater
than the power of Satan (1 John 4:4; Col. 2:15). Jesus
conquered Satan. His head is crushed. He is going to
be cast in the lake of fire. He will be in the eternal
torment of hell.
: 135 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Satan
Satan (the Devil) is not merely a mythological
figure. He is not a character from someones imagination. He is a person and has personal existence.
He had a beginning and will be judged by God.
He is alive and working.

The Devil is a skillful strategist.

The master Tactician.

He makes things obscure in the front.

He lurks behind every empty preaching.

He successfully guides arguments.

He employs the latest scientific methods.

His main aim is to deceive.

His main objective is to entice.

His main strategy is to ensnare.

Biblical Record about the origin of Satan

God created angels to do His bidding. They were
given different ranks and duties. The angel Lucifer was
in the highest position. He was the guardian to the
throne of God (Eze. 28:11-19). He was perfect. He
was beautiful. He was full of wisdom. He was created.
He was anointed. He was appointed. He was blameless.
He was in perfect harmony with God. He was in
the will of God, doing the will of God until
unrighteousness was found in him.
: 136 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

The fall of Lucifer, making him Satan, the devil

(Isa. 14:12-14)
Lucifer showed an outward expression of a
rebellion of his will against the will of God. The sin
of Lucifer was rebellion. By his rebellion he became the
adversary, Satan. The sin of Lucifer: The 5 I Wills:

I will ascend into heaven.

I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.

I will sit upon the mount of the congregation.

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds.

I will be like the most high.

When Lucifer fell, he was transformed into Satan.

When Lucifer rebelled, many of the angels with him
also rebelled. They were banished from the presence
and favor of God. These are the hosts of devils
performing the orders of the Devil, Satan.
We do not know when this event took place or
what things were there before the creation of man.
We can only speculate that the incident might have
taken place before the creation.
The creation of Man
God created man. Man was the crown of Gods
creation (Read Genesis 1:26 & 27).
Man was created in Gods Image.
Man was placed in a perfect environment.
: 137 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Man was in harmony with God, nature,

fellowmen and himself.
The fallen Lucifer, who became Satan, was envious
of mans special relationship with God. Read what
Satan did to Man in the third chapter of Genesis.
The fall of Man
When man yielded to the temptation brought by
Satan, it broke the special relationship between
man and God. Ever since the fall of man, God is
attempting to bring mankind back to Him while Satan
is trying to keep man away from God (2 Cor. 4:3&4).

Satan will use whatever method he can to keep

people from coming to Christ.

He convinces the world that he doesnt exist.

He raises false teachers who are sincere, full of

humanitarian zeal but unregenerate (2 Peter 2:1;
1 Cor. 2:14)

He creates a feeling in man:

@ That he is too bad to come to God.
: 139 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

@ That he is too good to need God.

@ That he did nothing wrong to need a savior.
@ That he has done some good works & God
has to accept him.
But, all have sinned and all need a Savior (Rom.
3:23, 6:23).
Our effective attitude towards Satan.

Be aware that Satan exists (2 Cor. 11:14,15).

Be aware that Satans motives are rebellious.

Be aware of his devices (1 Peter 5:8). He comes

with a variety of deceptions (2 Thes. 1:9,10;
Matt. 16:21-23; Rev. 12:9; John 8:44).

Be aware that Satan is finite. He is not all-knowing,

he is not all-powerful and He is not all-present.

Therefore, in order to stand firm against him,

realize that the power of God is greater than that
of Satan (1 John 4:4).

Realize that Christ came to destroy the works of

the Devil. (1 John 5:8).

Realize that we need to put on the full armor of

God (Eph. 6:11-17)

Remember that Satan is always pleased when

people trust in their religiosity rather than Jesus Christ.
Never forget that Christ is the ultimate victor and
Satan will be forever in the torment of hell.

Therefore, it is our responsibility to warn the youth

about the dangers of Satanism and trust the Lord

ASTROLOGY
All

human beings ask themselves

Who am I?
What is going to happen to me?
What will be my future?
What will be the future of my child?
Many people are worried about these questions.
Astrology claims to have the answers
Astrology, an ancient occultist art, resurfaced in the
20 century via widespread daily horoscopes in major
print and electronic media.
th

What is Astrology?
Astrology is an ancient practice which accepts that
the position of stars and planets has direct influence
upon a person and events related to his life. These
events can be determined from the position of stars
and planets through an astrological chart, known as a
Horoscope.
How is ones horoscope charted?
Steps:
1. The moment of ones birth.
: 143 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

2. Latitude and longitude of ones birth place.

3. Consider the true local time.
4. How to do this? Add or subtract 4 minutes to
each degree of the longitude of your birth place
to the east or west from the center of the time
zone in which you were born. This gives you the
True Time.
5. Convert the True Time into Star Time. This is
done by referencing a book containing the
positions of the planets in relation to the earth.
6. Check the star time in the astrological table to
find the individuals power of influence, the
ascendant - the zodiac sign that is rising on the
eastern horizon, at the moment of ones birth.
7. Align the ascendant with the 9 Oclock point on
the inner circle of the horoscope. You may read
from here the various zodiacal houses that
control your life and future.
Fallacies of Astrology
1. There is no scientific basis for the assumption that
stars foretell events and influence our lives.
2. Astrologists have no authority on which to base
the system they invented and to explain their own
world. If everything is predetermined by the
assembly of Zodiac, how did the original astrologer
determine the system accurately. Astrologists are
themselves also in the same system.
: 144 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

3. There are many systems of astrology which are

opposed to each other. The Astrology of the west
and east do not interpret the same behavior for
the same day.
4. Astrology is based on planets revolving around the
earth. Copernicus proved that planets revolve
around the sun not the earth. Therefore, the whole
assumption behind astrology has been proven
false centuries ago.
5. Astrologers based their system on seven planets,
including the Sun and the Moon. As the planets
Uranus and Neptune were not observable to the
naked eye they were not counted. However, why
wouldnt these previously undiscovered planets also
influence behavior and events in an individual? The
system breaks down quickly under critical
examination.
6. In reality, twins - born in the same time and in the
same place - live totally different lives. They are not
destined for the same course of life events.
7. Astrology fails to consider the people living in
other/ higher latitudes where periods of time differ
for the appearance of zodiac signs. The calculation
is possible only in latitudes lying closer to the
equator, other latitudes are left uninfluenced.
8. Note: I dont think this point provides anything
to the argument. In the last 2,000 years the
constellations have shifted. The constellation of
: 145 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Virgo is now the constellation of Libra. The

constellation of Libra is now the constellation of
Scorpio, and so on. A person who is born in
September will be in Virgo, where as the Sun
actually will be in Leo at that date. So, there will
be two different zodiac signs: One which is
stationary and the other slowly moving. Which
zodiac is to be used! No constellation in the sky
recurs, hence the astrological interpretations lacks
the very basis of comparisons. Note: This last
sentence is unclear.
(Indebted to Handbook of Todays religions by
Josh Mcdowell& John Stewart)
The Bible warns against Astrology
Astrological practices are condemned by God
because:

People try to understand the future through occult

means, rather than Gods word (Isa. 47:13-15).

To determine our lives by the stars contradicts the

Scripture (Deut. 4:19).

Astrology has no basis in reality. Therefore the

individual runs the risk of great loss: Loss of finance;
Loss of mental balance; Loss of opportunities; Loss
of trust in Gods Word (Dan. 2); Loss of choice.

Only God can reveal the future. Scripture holds us

responsible for our destiny.

2
NEW AGE MOVEMENT (NAM)
T he

New Age Movement has crept into the

evangelical churches, catching Christians unaware. This
cult is hard to identify because it has absorbed some
good tenets from many faiths: Judaism, Buddhism,
Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Christianity and Spiritualism. In fact the seeds of the New Age Movement were
already sown from the second century - occultism,
mysticism, astrology and metaphysical philosophies.
Gnosticism in the second century was a forerunner to
the fundamental beliefs of the New Age Movement.
The New Age Movement has had a variety of
names in the past including, the Human Potential
Movement (HPM), the Third Force, the Aquarian
Conspiracy, Cosmic Consciousness and Cosmic
Humanism. Though most refer to it as New Age
Movement today, many in the movement do not like
that name. However, they hold to most of the core
beliefs of the movement.
The New Age Movement is difficult to define
because of its syncretism of many faiths, the evolution
of its beliefs and practices that has occurred over the
years, and the way it adjusts to and compromises with
each new faith and religion that arises.
: 147 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

The New Age Movement has many sub-divisions,

but it is generally a collection of Eastern - influenced
metaphysical thought systems. Its conglomeration of
theologies, hopes and expectations is held together
with an eclectic teaching of salvation by correct
thinking and correct knowledge. It is a theology of
feeling good-ism, universal tolerance and moral
relativism.
Christian preachers and teachers often are not
aware of the serious dangers of this group and they
are not well equipped to confront and refute the
teachings of the New Age Movement. One main
reason is that most New Agers approach Christians
tactfully, initially emphasizing only the tenets that are
Biblical and dear to evangelical Christians.
The New Age Movement is not at all of the new
age. It is the Age-Old Movement of the eastern
religions dressed in appealing and attractive new terms
for the east and west. If left unchallenged, our
churches - even the pulpits - will be swallowed up by
this cultist theology. Being very much aware of this
dangerous truth, I thought it necessary to deal with
the subject and prepare the hearts of the saints how
to withstand this satanic onslaught in a new garment.
The major tenets of the New Age Movement
1. Monism: The fundamental belief of every
New Age Movement follower is ALL IS ONE.
This teaching means everything and everyone is
: 148 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

interrelated and interdependent. Ultimately there is

no difference between human, animals, things or
even God. Any differences between these entities
are merely apparent, not real.
2. Panthiesm: The fundamental belief all is one
brings about the logical assumption ALL IS
GOD. This means all of creation, animate or
inanimate, partakes in the divine essence. All
humans, animals, trees, rocks, hills, rivers, mountains
are gods or goddesses. This, in fact, is one of the
oldest and fundamental beliefs of Hinduism.
3. We are Gods: Because all is one and all is god
we are gods in disguise, though we are ignorant of
this truth. We are all Jesus in human form! Every
human being has got a portion of divinity in him
or her.
4. Man is Central: Humans are basically good and
have divine qualities from birth. If he knew this
truth, man would not live in fear or judgment. He
needs to know that he is not a sinner.
5. Self Consciousness/Realization: Though human
beings are divine, they are not aware of this truth,
because humanity is living in a metaphysical
amnesia. Man has forgotten his identity. He lives
in ignorance. Man must undergo a change of
consciousness and acknowledge his true identity
and his true potential as god. This is possible
through discipline of body and mind, through yoga
and meditation.
: 149 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

6. Reincarnation/Rebirth: Most New Age followers

believe in some form of reincarnation. Cycles of
birth, death and rebirth are essentials to ward off
our bad karma and to reach perfection. The
present condition is the outcome of ones actions
(karma) in a past life. Ultimate perfection is the
merging unto the ultimate Brahman, god which
is the perfect and ultimate force or energy. (There
is no belief in a personal God.) The perfection that
puts full stop to the cycle of rebirth is the reunion
with God.
7. Moral Relativism: New agers deny the law of
contradiction. They believe that two conflicting
statements can both be true. They think in terms
of gray, rather than black and white. Therefore they
teach that all religions are true and there are many
paths to God. This reminds us of the sayings, All
roads lead to Rome or Your Faith will save you.
There are no moral absolutes in the New Age
Movement. Therefore they advocate spiritual
tolerance of all true systems, all true religions.
They call this Harmonization.
8. God Is Impersonal: It (not He) is the ultimate
force or energy. It is omnipresent and benevolent.
Therefore it (god) will not condemn anyone.
Because New Age Movement tries to elevate man
to the ultimate god, they must lower the majesty
and personhood of the one true God.
: 150 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Origin of the New Age Movement

Christian church history tells us that a mystical
doctrine known as Gnosticism was born in the
second century. Though dormant for many years, it
began to grow again in the 1970s and 1980s through
occult and metaphysical religious communities. Its main
idea is personal transformation to a self-consciousness
(realization) as to who am I? Gnosticism succeeded
by various esoteric movements through Centurias
Rosicrucianism of the 17th century and Freemasonry,
Theosophy and ritual magic in the 19 th and 20 th
centuries.
In late 19 th century, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky,
co-founder of the Theosophical society, announced
the coming of a New Age. A period of mystical
brotherhood was expected. Practices of spiritualism
and astrology were encouraged.
Blavatskys successor Annie Besant predicted the
coming of a Messiah or world savior, who she believed
was the Indian Guru (teacher) Jiddu Krishnamurti.
In the 1940s Alice A. Bailey, founder of the Arcane
School, suggested the coming of a new Messiah,
the master Maitreya or future Buddha, in the last years
of 20 th century. Bailey established the triangles
program, to bring groups of three people together for
daily meditation for spiritual awareness.
One of Baileys followers, Benjamin Creme, an artist
and the editor of Share Magazine, announced in 1982
: 151 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

that the world savior, Messiah (Maitreya) would appear

that year. This prediction proved false. But the ideas
of New Age Movement did not die.
A new organization The Universal Foundation
was formed in the 1960s. Its wealthy leader Anthony
Brooke travelled widely, preaching that an apocalyptic
event would occur during the Christmas season of
1967. Though the event did not occur, an international
network of New Age Movement groups emerged in
response to this prediction.
In the 1970s, American Theosophist David Spangler
moved to the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland, where
he developed his idea of a New Age Movement. He
believed new waves of spiritual energy, signaled by
certain astrological changes (the movement of the
earth into a new cycle known as the Age of Aquarius)
had initiated the new age. Returning to the USA
in the mid 1970s, Spangler became a major architect
of the movement. He published books beginning
in 1976 with Revelation: the birth of a new age
which attracted many leaders from other occult and
metaphysical organizations. This could be considered
as the time of birth for the New Age Movement.
American Psychologist Richard Alpert was an
ardent advocate for the New Age Movement. He
received enlightenment in India and returned home
with the new name Baba Ram Dass. He spoke against
drug use for recreational hallucinations and selfrealization but advocated traditional spiritual disciplines
: 152 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

like Yoga and meditation for personal transformation

and self-consciousness.
Self-consciousness in the New Age Movement is
the realization that humans are gods - basically good
and with divine qualities. This realization helps New
Agers to discard fear of sin, death and the future and
gives them confidence that the re-birth will cease and
man will reunite with ultimate Brahman (God) which
is the perfection of power, force and energy.
New Age Movemnet in the Biblical Searchlight
1. New Age Movement is old: It is as old as the
garden of Eden! In Genesis chapter three we see
four propositions of Satan to Eve. Each of them
is the doctrine of the New Age Movement:
i. You will be like God

Pantheism

ii. You will not surely die

Reincarnation

iii. Your eyes will be opened

Change of
consciousness

iv. Did God really say?

Moral relativism

2. Monism is rejected in the Bible: Gods creation

is not an undivided unity but a diversity of created
things and beings. Creation is not unified in itself
but held together by Christ in whom all things hold
together (Col. 1:17).
3. Panthiesm is false according to the Bible:
Christianity is theistic. The Bible states emphatically
that God is personal, imminent, triune and sovereign.

God is separate from His creation, rather than

merely a part of the creation as pantheism would
teach.
4. Humans are not gods: Man is created in the
image of God, but he is not God (Gen. 1:26).
We have dignity and value because God created us
in His image (Ps. 8). But the New Age Movement
teaches that we are gods and we have divinity in us.
5. Occultism is condemned in the Bible (Deut.
18:9-13): New Agers flirt with the Occult in their
attempt to attain a change of consciousness to
realize they are gods. For this they use attractive
terms like Parapsychology, meditation, yoga and
spiritualism. But they are the direct contacts with
spiritualism/spiritual entities. The Bible warns us
against such dangerous practices and lists them
as divination and spirit channeling which are
detestable.
6. Reincarnation is refuted by Resurrection in the
Bible (1 Cor. 15): The doctrine of karma is
rejected by the Bible. Salvation is by the grace of
God and not by the works of man (Eph. 2:8,9).
Man will not be reborn after death. The Bible
clearly teaches in Heb. 9:27, It is appointed for men
to die once and after this comes judgment. There is no
second chance for self-improvement or for escape
from eternal punishment.
: 154 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

7. The Bible refutes moral relativism with

absolute truth: God gave us the moral law (Exo.
20:1-17). Nations and civilizations survive by
obeying these laws. It is foolish for new agers to
live in false hope that man can live as we like, do
what we like and be spared punishment because of
gods benevolence.
If morals are relative, deception will be right at
times. Stealing can be right in certain circumstances.
Adultery is justifiable because of a particular situation.
This leads to chaos and destruction. Lets apply it
to the scenario of driving a car. If morals are
relative, if there is only gray - with no black and
white, then everyone will be correct however they
choose to drive their car. When one new ager
thinks a traffic light is red, another may conclude
the light is green. They will crash into each other
with serious consequences. Moral relativism always
brings about irreparable, life threatening crashes.
Situational ethics is another form of moral
relativism expressed in Christian liberalism.
Relativism is absurd if applied to mathematics.
2+2 always equals 4. This is an absolute truth.
If New Agers applied the same relativism to the
absolutes of mathematics that they apply to the
absolute moral law, then they would argue that 2+2
can be 5 if the situation demands. Or 2+2 can be
3 in some difficult circumstances. The New Age
doctrine of moral relativism denies the absolute
: 155 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

moral law delivered in the scriptures. It is also not

conducive for a strong and thriving society.
8. The New Age teaching that men are gods is in
sharp contrast with the Bibles declaration that
man is a sinner (Rom. 3:10,11,23; 5:12; Jer. 17:9;
Luke 7:20-23). Why do even little children become
angry, speak lies, steal and seek to hurt others.
Interesting! They commit evil deeds even before
attending school or being impressed by the habits
of others. New Agers would argue these are not
evil habits at all because they are performed by little
gods. May be the benevolent god will close his
eyes to evil deeds and say these are not bad
deeds. No! Society will surely fall into chaos and
destruction if its people follow the New Age
doctrine of the singleness of man. This doctrine
is dangerous for any nation who is seduced by it.
History tells of their eventual destruction - Nations
that condoned homosexuality, abortion and the
like! Yet we do not learn from history. Sadly, many
countries today are giving license to these immoral
practices.
9. The New Age Movement teaches there are many
paths to salvation. But Bible states there is only
one way (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). How cruel it is to
direct a blind man standing on a precipice you will
be safe whether you turn to the left or to the right
or go straight ahead? New Age doctrines laughable
- yet incredibly cruel and dangerous in the end.
: 156 :

Conclusion
In the introduction we discussed the impossible
claims of New Age Movement followers. One such
claim is that all religions are true. Because of this,
the New Age Movement is seen as tolerant of all
other faiths. However, the New Age Movement does
not tolerate Christianity. Its followers say that
Christianity is narrow minded in its belief and
practices. Christianity directly contradicts the New Age
Movements core beliefs. Jesus Christ claims to be the
only one path to salvation. Jesus is the only way to
God (John 14:6).
Therefore, dear reader, beware of the New Age
Movement. They may approach you praising the Bible,
Jesus Christ and some of His teachings. They will not
disclose their in-depth teachings at the outset. By the
time you slowly realize the dangers of their doctrines,
you maybe already deep in their cultist beliefs and
behavior. Our churches, homes and children should be
protected from this dangerous cult (2 John 7-11).

HARE KRISHNA MOVEMENT
T he

full, correct name of this movement is

International Society of Krishna Consciousness
(ISKCON).
Hare Krishna means Lord Krishna, the Hindu
god they worship and whose name they chant
repeatedly.
Origins
R.C. Bhakdivedanta Swami Prabhupada founded
International Society of Krishna Consciousness
(ISKCON), on the instruction of his guru, to spread
his message to the west. Soon after reaching America
in 1965, sitting in Greenwich Village, he chanted his
mantra:
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna,
Hare Krishna, Hare Hare.
Hare Rama, Hare Rama,
Rama, Rama, Hare, hare.
This saffron robed Indian Guru attracted young
people of the generation who had denounced
American materialism and became hippies. The
hippies found freedom in drug culture, but many later
: 158 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

discovered its bad effects, and began searching for a

philosophy to guide them in a purpose-driven life.
Prabhupadas teachings offered the worship of
Krishna in discipline and unity. This appealed to these
disillusioned youths. Many Americans joined in the
early 1970s.
Swami Prabhupada died in 1977. By that time the
movement had seventy centers in major world cities.
(In January 1979 when I landed in Dallas Fort Worth
airport, on my first trip to the USA, several Hare
Krishna disciples approached me to witness. The
same thing happened in Houston airport and in many
other places where I traveled that year.)
The movement was governed by a body of
commissioners who were later dismissed for serious
misconduct. The movement still suffers under power
struggles between the eleven Gurus appointed to
administer the organization.
In the beginning of 21st century, the movement
encourages its followers to worship Krishna with their
families at home. Their websites give them the
instructions for practicing daily devotions.
At first the ISKCON did not appeal to Indians.
But in the 1980s, some wealthy Indians began paying
life-subscriptions to the movement. Today ISKCON
has huge temples, residential centers, cultural centers,
hotel services and vegetarian restaurants in many
Indian cities and other business centers in the world,
to raise money to propagate their teachings.
: 159 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

ISKCON Teachings
The cult originated in North India in the 16 th
century, and is based on the Hindu Scripture, the
Bhagavat Gita.

Worship Krishna as the supreme incarnation (not

as just one incarnation of Vishnu).

Soul of man is eternal.

Soul of man will reborn into another body

according to how a person lived in life.

To know a true spiritual relationship with Lord

Krishna, a devotee needs to give-up attachment to
the physical world, family and work.

If a person lives in close consciousness with Lord

Krishna, he will not be reborn into the body of an
animal or another human being. He will go to
highest spiritual abode known as Krishnaloka.

So, salvation lies in true conscious relationship with

Krishna.

All actions should be done for Krishna and then

they cannot be bad because Krishna is above good
and evil.

How to be a member of the Movement?

A person can gain membership in three stages:

In the first six months to live in the temple and

study the teachings of ISKCON.
: 160 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Then in an initiation ceremony the follower is given:

- A Sanskrit Name.
- Three strands of neck beads which the follower
should wear throughout his life.

* In the second six months the follower is given a

secret mantra to chant three times a day.
* Then he receives the sacred thread to wear over
the shoulder and across his chest.
* The final ceremony is only for special devotees
who take a life-long vow of poverty, celibacy and
commitment to preaching and doing good works.
Training of Iskcon followers

Cleanliness is of utmost importance, especially when

one visits the temple.

The day of every follower is closely planned on a

time schedule that includes:
- Chanting mantras
- Attending services
- Studying
- Completing chores
- Raising funds on the streets five to six hours a day

Follow a code of conduct:

- Alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco, eggs, meat and fish
are banned. Drugs are allowed only on Doctors
prescriptions.
: 161 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

- Wear Indian-style clothes

- Heads are clean shaven, except for a pig tail by
which they hope that Krishna will pull them up
to heaven.
- Time not to be wasted on sports, games, idle
talks, gambling, etc. It should be spent on
devotion to Krishna and on bringing others to
worship Krishna.
- Sex outside marriage is forbidden. Sex between
husband and wife is allowed once a month only
for procreation.
- The husband should conduct familys devotion
to Krishna. If his family burdens obstruct it, he
should leave his family in order to concentrate
on worshipping Krishna.
- Women are considered to be inferior, less
intelligent and untrustworthy.
ISKCON & Christianity
Upon the first impression, it may seem like Christians
and Krishna worshippers have some similarities. This
was one of the reasons for discontented and nominal
Christian youths to join ISKCON. Early on, rich and
affluent western youths, missing the required spiritual
food in their diet from their church or their parents
and restlessly seeking meaning, joined the undisciplined,
free life-style hippy fold. At the same time, ISKCON
: 162 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

rose on the horizon spreading answers through

discipline, meditation and personal devotion and
worship of Lord Krishna. Hoping this might be the
ultimate answer, the hippy community welcomed the
ISKCON.
Deceived by the syncretism of ISKCON - a
mixture of good from Christianity and other faiths even Christians began to join this cult. Because of this,
I felt strongly that I should include Hare Krishna
Movement in this book on cults.
Lets look at the similarities between Christianity
and ISKCON. Both:

Believe in a Lord to whom they commit their lives

in personal devotion.

Believe that God is noticeably different from man.

Believe salvation results in a personal relationship

with a personal God.

Therefore ISKCON seeks to de-emphasize differences when proselytizing Christians. They paint the
differences as a matter of semantics. But in truth:

ISKCON members believe and worship many gods,

of which Krishna is the most important one.

They worship idol and statutes of these gods.

They teach that Jesus was not God, but a devotee

of Krishna.

become one with, the ultimate reality (Brahman) in

which the individual no longer exists but become
merged into Brahman, the supreme God. Technically,
this is a perception not a process.
(Ref: Martin Goldsmith & Rosemary Harley - Who is my
neighbor 2006.)
Note: I think this needs a closing, similar to some of
the other chapters. As is, it feels like it just ends
abruptly and without context.
Conclusion
There is no assurance of eternal salvation in
ISKCON. There is no individuality for any person in
etrenity. Union with Brahma is the ultimate goal of
every person. This can be attained by Karma. But the
Bible explicitly teaches that man is a sinner and he
needs salvation and that is possible through Jesus
Christ who took the place of sinners and gave Himself
as substitutionary sacrifice. When a sinner accepts this
truth, believes in his heart and confesses by his mouth,
he gets instantaneous salvation and assurance (Rom.
10:9,10; 8:16). Followers of ISKCON die without
hope. It is my earnest desire and prayer to God that
these dear people would hear the Gospel of salvation
through Christ, accept Him as Savior and die with
assurance of salvation. It is with this burden I have
written this small article on ISKCON.

YOGA
What is Yoga?
Yoga is a school of Hindu Philosophy advocating
and prescribing a course of physical and mental
discipline for attaining liberation from the material
world and union of the self with the Supreme Being
or ultimate principle called Brahman.
It is an ascetic Hindu discipline involved controlled
breathing, prescribed body positions and meditations
with the goal of attaining a state of deep spiritual
insight and tranquility.
Hatha Yoga is the most commonly practiced
exercise in the west and it is a combination of difficult
postures with controlled breathing which focus the
mind to withdraw from the outside world and pave
the way for a mystical union with the ultimate
Brahman by losing self-consciousness, which is called
Moksha or Nirvana and this is commonly followed in
Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
In other words, Yoga is to suppress all activity of
the body, soul and mind to obtain freedom from the
visible world (Visible universe/material world is only an
illusion to Hindu philosophy) and be absorbed in
: 166 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Brahma and lose existence, which is called Moksha

or Nirvana. This is the salvation available in Hindu
teaching. It is a deliverance from the cycle of
reincarnation. There are 330 million gods in Hinduism.
In Yoga, every posture and each position of the
body is dedi-cated to one of the gods. Each yoga
pose is actually a posture of worship to one of
the Hindu gods.
The term YOGA (from the Sanskrit word YUJ)
means yoke or Unite body, mind and soul with
total concentration (focus/meditation) on a subject
until a person loses his own self-awareness, gets
deliverance from the universes which is only an illusion
and then merge with Brahman. This term and belief
originated in the Hindu Vedas and Upanishads in
the 5th century B.C.
Because of the space constraint in this booklet, let
me give an outline on the subject for your further
exploration and elaborate studies:@ Through the above mentioned concentration and
discipline, man may escape the five hindrances to
enlightenment: Longing for existence.
Malice.
Laziness.
Distraction.
Doubt.
: 167 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

@ Then he enters into a trance and levitation (an

illusion of being raised into the air) and there he
acquires the three knowledges:
Knowing his former incarnation.
Knowing the path of reincarnation.
Knowing the destruction of desire and ignorance.
@ Yoga can be practiced by:
Concentrated meditation.
Physical exercises designed to liberate the
practitioner from all awareness of himself and
the world around him.
Meditating on short word/sentence repeated
constantly (Chanting) until the practitioner loses
conscious awareness of life. (Often this is done
by focusing at the end of the nose, chanting a
mantra or repeating a praise/prayer.)
The Hindu philosophy of Yoga seeks to calm the
conflicting impulses in a person so that he may find
his true self and then be united with the ultimate
cosmic reality, BRAHMAN.
@ To achieve this:
A person needs to be freed from the consequences of his actions which his being trapped
in a cycle of birth and rebirth.
A person also needs to be freed from illusion
(this material world is just an illusion)
: 168 :

Different forms of Yoga

1. Raja Yoga: This is the basis of most yoga today.

Physical Exercise: to bring about mastery of the

body so that it may not distract the spiritual
concentration.

Breathing Exercise: to control vital energy that

enters the body through breath.

Concentration.

Meditation.

These are the by-products of disciplines. They

cannot be separately sought after. A person may gain
paranormal knowledge (knowledge beyond the sphere
of science and human calculations) and supernatural
abilities.
2. Hatha Yoga: This is the most common Yoga
practiced in the west. HA means moon and THA
means Sun. It is a belief that that body receives two
currents - one from the sun and the other from the
moon. As both are always at war, we experience
restlessness of our body and mind. If these two
currents can be brought to work together, a person
can be free to concentrate on his true self. Therefore
three activities are suggested:
Physical exercise.
Rules of food and Hygiene.
Breathe control.
: 169 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

@ These help to unite the two currents.

@ Makes a person free to guide the life-energy
which comes through breath to the spiritual
energy center situated at the base of the
spine.
In the West Hatha Yoga is popular as a physical
exercise.
In the East these three activities are only
preliminaries to the real yoga.
3. Gnana Yoga: Meditation on Hindu scriptures,
Hindu wisdom, Hindu Experience.
To get in touch with true self.
To gain absolute knowledge.
4. Karma Yoga: Work should be done as worship.
@ Not for personal fulfillment.
@ Not for personal satisfaction.
@ Not for personal gain.
Karma Yoga teaches that the results of mans
actions are gods responsibility.
5. Bhakti Yoga: This Yoga is by giving devotion to
one of the personal forms of VISHNU or KRISHNA.
To realize true self hidden by physical illusion.
To escape from the cycles of birth and death.
: 170 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

This includes:
@ Chanting of Mantras.
@ Worship of Krishna, the supreme reality.
6. Tantric Yoga:
Encourages using natural impulses of the body
to help experience ultimate reality.
Sexual relations are considered as a special means
to experience the ultimate oneness of universe.
Should Christians practice Yoga?

Because the underlying philosophy and ultimate goal

is to unite/merge with Brahman.

Because Yoga encourages preoccupation with self:

@ Self-knowledge.
@ Self- revelation.
@ Self-development.
@ Self-fulfillment.
@ Self-satisfaction.
@ self-redemption (Instead of salvation through
Christ)

Because it leads to increased acceptance and

openness to occult influences.

Because it teaches that all religions are true, one is

not better than the others.
: 171 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Because this contradicts with the uniqueness of

Christ and the Biblical view of salvation.

Yoga is popularized internationally. Yoga day is

globally celebrated in June 21, 2015. The present
government in India is trying to enforce (compulsory)
Yoga in schools, colleges and other institutions. It is
working hard to change India to a Hindutva nation,
with the explanation that Hindutva is a way of life
and not a religion. This is a forerunner for influencing
all Indians to adapt and follow the life style and culture
prescribed in the Hindu scriptures.
Though Hinduism is only the third largest religions
in the world, Hindu ascetics of India boldly assert that
Hinduism will be the largest religion in the world
by AD 2030. Yoga is only one of the eastern Hindu
philosophies subtly used in the easily gullible West,
focusing now mainly on Hatha Yoga and delaying the
other 4 varieties of Yoga.
Disillusioned by the lukewarm Christianity in the
1960s, dissatisfied by the affluence in the West, young
people gave in to drugs for trance and hippy life-style
for mental peace. It was during that time Yoga was
brought into the West by eastern sanyasis (Hindu holy
men) assuring liberation by Yoga. This became popular
because in Yoga also people get trance and are taken
up in the air with illusions, dreams, visions and
supernatural imaginations.
Because this infiltration is fast finding in the East
and West, following stories, testimonies and opinions
: 172 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

are given for wise choices by every reader of this

treatise:
Eastern Philosophy and Practice of Yoga is not
compatible with Christian Faith:
(Adapted from the writing of Dr. James Manjackal)
What is Yoga? The word Yoga means union, the
goal of Yoga is to unite ones transitory (temporary)
self, JIVA with the infinite BRAHMAN, the
Hindu concept of God... This God is not a personal
God, but it is an impersonal spiritual substance
which is one with nature and cosmos. Brahman is an
impersonal divine substance that pervades, envelopes
and underlies everything. Yoga has its roots in the
Hindu Upanishads, which is as old as 1.000 BC, and
it tells about Yoga thus, unite the light within you
with the light of Brahman. The absolute is within
one self says the Chandogya Upanishads, TAT
TUAM ASI or THOU ART THAT. The Divine
dwells within each one of us through His microcosmic
representative, the individual self-called Jiva. In the
Bhagavad Gita, the lord Krishna describes the Jiva as
my own eternal portion, and the joy of Yoga
comes to yogi who is one with Brahman.
In A.D. 150, the yogi Patanjali explained the eight
ways that leads the Yoga practices from ignorance to
enlightenment - the eight ways are like a staircase They are self-control (Yama), religious observance
(Niyama), postures (asana), breathing exercises
(Pranayama), sense control (Pratyahara), concentration
: 173 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

(Dharana), deep contemplation (dhyana), enlightenment (samadhi).

It is interesting to note, here, that postures and
breathing- exercises, often considered to be the whole
of Yoga in the West, are steps 3 and 4 towards union
with Brahman! Yoga is not only an elaborate system
of physical exercises, it is a spiritual discipline,
purporting to lead the soul to Samadhi, total union
with the divine being. Samadhi is the state in which
the natural and the divine become one, man and God
become one without any difference (Brad Scott: Exercise
or religious practice? Yoga: What the teacher never taught you
in that Hatha Yoga class in the Watchman Expositor
Vol. 18, No. 2, 2001).
Such a view is radically contrary to Christianity
which clearly distinguishes between Creator and
creature, God and man. In Christianity, God is the
Other and never the self. It is sad that some
promoters of Yoga, Reiki and other disciplines and
meditations, had misquoted some isolated Bible
quotations to substantiate their arguments such as,
you are the temple of God, the living water flows from
you, you will be in me and I will be in you, it is no
longer I that lives but Christ lives in me, etc. without
understanding the context and the meaning of those
words in the Bible. There are even people who
portray Jesus as a yogi as we can see now a days such
pictures of Jesus in convent-chapels and presbyteries
- Jesus presented in yogi postures of meditation!
: 174 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

To call Jesus a yogi is to deny His intrinsic

divinity, holiness and perfection and suggest that He
had a fallen nature subject to ignorance and illusion
(Maya), that He needed to be liberated from the
human condition through the exercise and discipline
of Yoga. Yoga is incompatible with the Christian
Spirituality because it is pantheistic (God is everything
and everything is God), and holds that there is only
one Reality and all else is illusion or Maya. If there is
only one absolute reality and all else is illusory, there
can be no relationship and no love. The Centre of
Christian faith is faith in the Holy Trinity, Father, Son
and the Holy Spirit, three persons in one God-Head,
the perfect model of loving relationship. Christianity is
all about relationships, with God.
In Hinduism, good and evil, like pain and pleasure
are illusory (Maya) and therefore unreal. Vivekananda,
the most respected icons of modern Hinduism, said
good and evil are one and the same (Vivekananda.
The yogas and other works published, Ramakrishna
Vivekananda Centre NY 1953). In Christianity the vexing
problem of sin as an offence against the Holiness of
God is inseparable from our faith, because sin is the
reason why we need a Savior. The Incarnation, the
Life, the Passion, the Death and the Resurrection of
Jesus are for us means for salvation that is to set us
free from sin and its consequences. We cannot ignore
this fundamental difference in order to absorb Yoga
and other Eastern meditation techniques into Christian
Spirituality.
: 175 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

The practice of Yoga is pagan at best, and occult

at worst. This is the religion of antichrist and for the
first time in history it is being madly practiced
throughout the Western world and America. It is
ridiculous that even yogi masters wearing a Cross or
a Christian symbol deceive people saying that Yoga has
nothing to do with Hinduism and say that it is only
accepting the other cultures. Some have masked Yoga
with Christian gestures and call it Christian Yoga.
Here it is not a question of accepting the culture of
other people, it is a question of accepting another
religion which is irrelevant to our faith based on the
Holy Bible.
It is a pity that Yoga has been wildly spread all
over from kindergarten to all form of educational
institutions in medicine, psychology, etc. calling itself as
a science while it is not a science at all; and they are
sold under the label relaxation therapy, self-hypnosis,
creative visualization, centering, etc. Hatha Yoga, one
which is wide spread in Europe and America for
relaxation and non-strenuous exercises, is one of the
six recognized systems of orthodox Hinduism, and it
is at its roots religious and mystical, which is the most
dangerous forms of Yoga (Dave Hunt, the seduction of
Christianity page 110) Remember the words of St.
Paul, No wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an
angel of light (II Cor. 11:14). It is true that many
people are healed by Yoga and other Eastern ways of
meditation and prayers. Here the Christian should ask
themselves whether they need healing and material
: 176 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

benefits or their God Jesus Christ in whom they

believe, who is the source of all healings and good
health.
The desire to become God is the first and second
sin in the history of creation as chronologically
recorded in the Bible, You said in your heart, I will
scale the heavens, above the stars of God I will set
up my throne; I will take my sit on the mount of
Assembly, in the recesses of the north. I will ascend
above the tops of the clouds, I will be like the Most
High (Is. 14:13-14). The serpent said to the
woman, You will not die. For God knows that when you eat
of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God who
knows what is good and what is bad (Gen. 3:4-5). The
philosophy and practice of Yoga are based on the
belief that man and God are one. It teaches one to
focus on oneself instead on the One True God.
It encourages its participants to seek the answers to
lifes problems and questions within their own mind
and conscience instead of finding solutions in the
Word of God through the Holy Spirit as it is in
Christianity. It definitely leaves one open to deception
from Gods enemy, who searches for victims whom he
can take away from God and the Church (I Pet. 5:8).
There are some people who say, there is nothing
wrong in having the practices of these, it is enough
not to believe the philosophies behind. The promoters
of Yoga, Reiki, etc, themselves very clearly state, that
the philosophy and practice are inseparable. So a
: 177 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Christian cannot, in any way, accept the philosophy

and practice of Yoga because Christianity and Yoga
are mutually exclusive viewpoints. Christianity sees mans
primary problem as sin, a failure to conform to both,
the character and standards of a morally perfect God.
Man is alienated from God and he is in need of
reconciliation. The solution is Jesus Christ The lamb
of God who takes away the sins of the world.
Through Jesus death on the Cross, God reconciled the
world to Himself. He, now calls man to freely receive
all the benefits of his salvation through faith in Christ
alone. Unlike Yoga, Christianity views Salvation as a
free gift, it can only be received and never be earned
or attained by ones own effort or works.
Today what is needed in the west, in Europe and
South Asia or elsewhere is the powerful preaching of
the message of Christ coming from the Bible in the
words of Jesus Christ, If the Son therefore shall make
you free, ye shall be free indeed (John 8:36). Eternal
individuality is the plan of God for every human
being, not extinction into nothingness or annihilation
or absorbing into Brahman.
Orthodox Hindu Scholars Contend There Can
Be No Christian Yoga.
T.K.V. Desikachar, the famous proponent of
Hinduism claimed emphatically, Yoga is from the Vedas.
And he continued, At its broadest, yoga, from the
root word yuj in Sanskrit, means to unite. Most
Hindu texts discuss yoga as a practice to control the
: 178 :

senses and ultimately, the mind. The most famous of

which is the Bhagavad Gita (dating back to 6 th-3 rd
Century BCE3), where Krishna speaks of four types of
yoga - bhakti, or devotion; jnana, or knowledge;
karma, or action; and dhyana, or concentration (often
referred to as raja yoga, though not all sources agree
on the term) - as paths to achieve moksha, the ultimate
goal for Hindus.
Of the four, the description of dhyana yoga has the
most in common with yoga as it is largely understood
today.
There, having the mind actively focused upon a single point,
with thought and sense activity controlled,
Sitting on a seat, one should practice yoga
for purification of the self.
With an aligned body, head, and neck-keeping
these steady, without movement;
Focusing the vision toward the tip of ones
nose without looking about in any direction.
(Bhagavad Gita 6:12-13)
Another Champion for Orthodox Hinduism, Baba

There can be no Christian Yoga. It was quite
astonishing to see on the flyer Christian Yoga!
This Thursday night. I could feel the wheels
spinning in my brain. Christian Yoga, I thought.
Now while Christians can practice yoga, I am not
: 179 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

aware of any Christian teachings about yoga. Yoga

is not a Judeo/Christian word! It is not a part of
the Roman Catholic teachings and certainly not a
part of protestant teachings. It is not found within
the King James Version of the bible. It is a Hindu
word, or more correctly a Sanskrit word from the
Vedic civilization. So how did we get Christian
Yoga?
From this I could conclude that Christian Yoga
could only indicate one of two possibilities:
1. Fundamentalist Christianity is threatened by yoga
and is attempting to take over this system that is
expanding and successfully teaching spirituality to
the masses.
2. Christianity is subconsciously attempting to return
to the spiritual roots of civilization - the Vedic
civilization.
I thought to myself, Why would they want to
take over yoga? Could it be due to the decline of
members within the Fundamentalist Christian church
within the last 60 years? Is this an extensive marketing
plan cooked up in some New York marketing gurus
head? Is it an attempt to water down the teachings
of yoga and import their own teachings into the
system? Or is it that they cannot stand not to own
everything spiritual?
I think the best reason might be that yoga, and
eastern spirituality, offered answers to the spiritual
: 180 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

questions that the spiritually hungry masses had.

It offered a practical, rational, logical, and truthful
approach to spirituality. It did not contain any form
of self-righteous condemnation, but offered love and
acceptance to all. It did not prey upon victims with
terms such as Sin and eternal damnation. But
most importantly, it had answers! It offered a practical
approach to cultivating a relationship with divinity.
It offered a systematic approach and an abstract
approach to meet the varying temperaments of the
spirituality hungry.
The second possibility was that Christianity was
itself looking for answers. Possibly the fundamentalist
view, inflexibility, and condemnation was no longer
fulfilling the needs of the masses or the leaders of the
church. Offering yoga classes allowed the Christian to
secretly practice Hinduism without having to renounce
their Christian tradition.
Possibly by embracing the technology of yoga and
meditation, the Christian church could finally return to
the idea of love and acceptance that it believed it was
founded upon. It is ironic that one religion would need
to look to another religion to teach them about love,
peace, harmony, and forgiveness. If successful, it could
embrace these ancient teachings and save itself from
what has been a steady decline in church attendance
of the past few decades.
But possibly in their wisdom, the current fathers
of the church realized that their time as a dominate
: 181 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

religion was coming to a close. So within America

they must absorb yoga before they are absorbed by it.
This is a common religious view that has appeared
numerous times within world history. Absorbing yoga
would allow the church to move their resources quickly
to India. Taking over the country (India) would allow
them to own all the spirituality, and then pick and
choose which tasty spiritual treats they would share.
After all they have 2000 years practice with this.
Indian being a loving, peaceful people, openly
embraced their brothers from the west. They looked
the other way as their temples were torn down. They
accepted it as karma as their families were torn apart
over differing religious beliefs. The Indians thought
it was thoughtful of the missionaries to dress up just
like swamis, to be just like them and to share in
their kindred spirit.
Modern day scholars from India frequently present
the attitude of let them have yoga, I am interested
in protecting Hinduism. I have heard this sentiment
on numerous occasions, but the reality is that yoga is
a part of Hinduism. Allowing one part to be taken
from Hinduism opens a door for the distortion of the
teachings. We must remember that the roots to
modern day yoga comes from Vedic Yoga. The same
Vedic Yoga that is the authority of Hinduism. Allowing
one branch to be severed from the tree of knowledge
will not necessarily kill that tree, but it can produce
strain and have an unbalancing effect upon the tree.
: 182 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Hinduism should reclaim its full heritage and not

allow other groups to rename its sacred teachings
under their banner, especially when they have no
history of those teaching within their own system.
If they wish to borrow and say this comes from our
brothers and sisters in Hinduism, then that is another
thing. But frequently some groups attempt to privatize
the information and present themselves as the original
authority. Hinduism should guard against its sacred
traditions becoming distorted and taken away. Scholars
at universities should take the stand that yoga is part of
Hinduism, though one is not required to be a Hindu to practice
yoga (Baba Prem).
In spite of the emphatic arguments of Hindu
scholars that YOGA is Hinduism, there are Christian
activists promoting Yoga even in their churches.

A Christians Rationalization of Yoga:

(Following argument is from a European, Catholic
Christian, Doireann Fristoe.)
The term yoga (from the Sanskrit word yuj,
which means yoke or to unite, as in uniting the
body, mind and spirit) was first used in Hindu texts
in the fifth century BC. Yoga originated in Hinduism,
and remains a large part of some Hindu practices
today.
However, things have changed in the last few
thousand years, and most yoga currently practiced
in America only slightly resembles the original practice.
: 183 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

In fact, most of what we call yoga in the West is not

truly yoga at all - it is only asana, the physical postures,
and pranayama, the breathing exercises. There are
myriad schools of thought in modern yoga and to
sum all of them up in a few paragraphs would do
them no justice. Hinduism involves yoga; all yoga is
not Hinduism.
Lots of things that were once pagan have been
co-opted by Christians and used for worship; the most
obvious examples being Christmas and Easter.
Christmas traditions of gift-giving, evergreen trees
and even mistletoe and holly originated in ancient
Babylon during the feast of the Son of Isis, which was
held on (drumroll, please!) Dec. 25. Even though most
biblical historians believe Jesus was born in September,
Pope Julius I declared in A.D. 350 that his birth would
be celebrated on Dec. 25 - most likely to make it easier
for the predominately pagan Romans to convert to
Christianity.
And Easter originally celebrated the Assyrian fertility
goddess Ishtar (hence the eggs and the, erm, rabbits).
Yikes!
To say that Christians cant take a practice that was
intended for something else and use it to worship
God is to ignore not only history, but the transformational power of Christ.
Is meditation, (Driscoll of Seattle argued),
Opening to demonism? Or is there a way we can
participate that is pleasing to God?
: 184 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Jesus tells us that when we pray, we should pray in

solitude and with few words (Matt. 6:5-8). During His
ministry, Christ often withdrew from His disciples for
hours to be alone with God (Luke 5:16). He was gone
for hours, but praying with few words - He was
meditating. Was he not chanting those few words?
Meditation is referenced throughout Scripture Jesus did it, David did it and the Lord exhorted Joshua
to do it (Joshua 1:8). Meditation is as integral to
Christianity as it is to Hinduism, but because of cultural
influences Christians have been convinced that the only
way to meditate is by sitting still and coaxing yourself
into a trance. Its not! You can meditate on the Word,
creation or even gratitude.
As Christians, we agree that nobody can come to
the Father but by Christ (John 14:6). Jesus gave us His
Holy Spirit to dwell within us and speak to us - and
others - on His behalf (1 Cor. 3:16, 6:19; Rom. 5:5,
8:9; Acts 2:38, 5:32).
One of my teachers refers to yoga as the process
of noticing. At its most basic, yoga is a physical
discipline involving stretching, strength training and
breathing exercises. By practicing the physical aspects
of the discipline, we develop an acute awareness of
the natural state of our bodies, increased focus and
heightened self-control (Gal. 5:22). If we are more
aware of the natural state of our bodies, how much
more can we be aware of when the Holy Spirit is
moving within us?
: 185 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Why do we pray? Why do we read Scripture?

To be more fully connected to God, of course. If the
Holy Spirit is dwelling within us, an inward practice is
not selfish or demonic - its necessary. For someone
with the spiritual gift of discernment, this practice can
be extremely valuable in cultivating your ability to
recognize truth.
Is it really necessary to be that aware of my body?
Paul says that offering our bodies as a living
sacrifice is a spiritual act of worship, and is holy and
pleasing to God (Rom. 12:1-2). Yoga is a fantastic way
to do that! Research has proven that yoga lowers
blood pressure, increases musculoskeletal health and
circulation, and decreases stress (prison yoga programs
have reduced recidivism by as much as 80 percent
in their participants). It can be used for insomnia,
depression, arthritis, asthma, hypertension and more.
It helped eliminate my frequent anxiety attacks, and my
roommate is using it to heal a spinal injury.
If we are freed of those distractions and
limitations, we are better poised to hear that still, small
voice and much more equipped to serve others.
If you have signed up for Yoga:We know that discernment is profoundly important
in the life of a Christian. In a yoga class, we should
be continually evaluating our own intentions and
actions - just like we should be doing with everything,
every day.
: 186 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

Driscoll of Seattle claimed that if you just sign up

for a little yoga class, youre signing up for a little demon class.
But we know Satan has no power over us that we do
not give him! If the class is chanting, you can take
that time to pray for those around you (though in five
years of weekly classes, Ive encountered chanting in
only one of them). Invite Christ into your yoga class
just like you invite Him into your home, your
relationships and your heart. Meditate on Him, Chant
praises to Jesus, Think on the blessings you received
from God (D. Fristoe)
One of the Lies Today
One branch or path of yoga is called Hatha
Yoga and this is probably what most people in the
West associate with the word yoga - believing it is
being practiced only for mental and physical health.
Some of the positions in yoga are not quite as
harmless as they may appear, but are obviously of
occult origin, as in the cobra, which is usually
followed by greeting the sun (suryanamaskar) - and
taking the pose of the mountain. These are all
positions which are designed to welcome Hindu gods.
(Each pose/position of the body and the organs are
dedicated to any one of the 33 million gods of
Hinduism)
In the Hatha Yoga Pradipika it mentions the
following in chapter one: Salutations to Shiva,
who taught the science of Hatha Yoga. It is the
: 187 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

aspirants stairway to the heights of Raja Yoga... Yogi

Svatmarama explains the science of hatha for one
reason - Raja Yoga.
So here we see clearly that Hatha Yoga was
specifically designed to lead the practitioner onto Raja
Yoga. Raja Yoga, however, is chiefly concerned with
the cultivation of the mind through meditation. (Hatha
Yoga is the most commonly practiced yoga in the
west.)
Shiva is also known as the Destroyer (of evil) or
Yogeshwara (Lord of Yogis). Shivas consort is Devi,
or Kali, the goddess of death.
Therefore, the idea that Hatha Yoga is purely
physical is very much a distortion of the truth (in
other words, an outright lie) and indeed begs the
question Why the cover up or confusion?
Ouija boards, Tarot cards, Astrology signs
and symbols may all seem harmless to some,
but like yoga, they have an idea attached
Of course, it could be asked whether something
purely physical can have any spiritual implications. One
needs only look at such practices as Ouija boards,
Tarot cards, Astrology signs and symbols may all seem
harmless to some, but like yoga, they have an idea
attached to them that is the problem.
A further example that shows how something
physical can have spiritual implications is to be found
in the account of the Garden of Eden. For in Genesis
: 188 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

chapter 3 we have an introduction to the enemy of

God and mankind, making the suggestion to Adams
wife, Eve, that by doing something purely physical
(i.e. eating from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge
of good and evil) she would not only receive a mighty
spiritual blessing, but would indeed live forever, and
become as a god.
The real result of this action was Adam and Eve
being cast out from Eden and the Fall of Man. Ever
since then, man has been trying to sneak back into
paradise by jumping over the hedge as it were (using
drugs and mysticism) by inward looking instead of
outward looking to God through Jesus Christ.
Yoga was specifically designed as a way to escape
the constant and never-ending deaths and rebirths of
reincarnation = Yoga is one way of obtaining proper
re-incarnation by fulfilling Karma!
Personal Result of Yoga - Awakening Kundalini
It may be true that the asanas (positions) and even
perhaps the pranayama (breathing) can have health
benefits, but the ultimate goal in yoga is something
much more sinister. Very few Western yoga teachers
actually touch upon this aspect of yoga - but according
to the ancient texts, it is indeed the main aim - the
asanas and the pranayama really intend to produce the
awakening of what is known as kundalini power,
which is taught as being a snake coiled around the
base of the spine.
: 189 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

When this serpent is awakened, it will then move

up through the body, through the chakras (the
so-called life-force centers) and once it reaches the
crown chakra (or the top of the head) it will explode
into the so called thousand-petalled lotus.
This is when the danger really starts, and for many
people from this point onwards it is almost impossible
to return to any semblance of normality. The ancient
texts actually include a warning about this, but most
Western teachers are either ignorant of it, being too
aware of the vast revenues that yoga can bring in, or
are indeed themselves deceived and are willingly leading
people down a very dangerous path.
Swiss occultist Carl Jung, in his book The
Collected Works of CG Jung - termed it a deliberately induced psychotic state. Now, in most societies,
deliberately inducing a psychotic state in oneself
would lead to various sections of the Mental Health
Act being quoted whilst having oneself bundled into
a white van by some police officers.
I myself came very close to this stage. After
I practiced yoga intensively (4-6 hours a day) for about
a year, I began to be very depressed and nervous, but
as I was unaware of the cause of this depression,
I continued to use yoga as a way of filling my day.
One day, whilst being deep in pranayama and
meditation, something in my mind exploded...
One day, whilst being deep in pranayama and
meditation, something in my mind exploded, and my
: 190 :

conscience turned white. Suddenly, there were beings

dressed in white robes at my side (in the corner of
my eye only, in my peripheral vision), telling me that
they would guide me into a new life if I would only
continue with my yoga.
I did not like that too much, and did not
understand what was happening; neither had any of
the books I had been reading mentioned anything
about this manifestation, so I stopped. I was left in a
sort of semi-aware state at that point (similar to the
point one would reach just before or after the peak
of an LSD trip), and I was also very much aware of
what I could only describe as a rent in the fabric of
this reality.
I went back into my asanas/pranayama the next
day again, and within minutes these spiritual beings
were back, with the same advice. They were insistent
that I listen to them. There was a palpable anger now
also given off by them, as I had consciously rejected
them by stopping the day before.
I stopped again, and never returned to it. But I was
always aware that these spirit-beings were angry with
me, and I had no peace at all from then on. Only in
drunken oblivion or drugs could I find any peace.
What Do You Do about It?
Things may not have become as bad as that for
you, but be aware anyway - if you practice yoga, you
practice Hinduism; and the more you do it, the more
: 191 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

you open yourself up to the spiritual side of it.

Thousands of others have experienced very similar
things while practicing yoga. Not all have been as
fortunate as I in being set free from this - many have
become insane, or indeed been driven to suicide.
It was at the point in my life when things really
got out of control that I met a Christian and I started
going to Christian meetings (more for the very decent
food than anything else). On the second meeting
I was offered the opportunity to really find and
experience God.
As soon as I had received this freely given gift
from God, a real peace came; the voices and pressures
left, and joy and realization came almost instantly.
The blackness that had followed me around (the rent
in the fabric of this reality) was also gone.
My life has changed drastically since then. Instead
of constantly focusing on myself I try to focus on
other people. Instead of trying to find self-fulfillment
through yoga, I found true peace. Yoga is a very
selfish way of life, yet it doesnt produce the results
hoped for. Instead it is a lie and brings only destruction.
How true are Christs words in Matthew 16:25:
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever
will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
So many try to save their lives (fill the void in
their lives) through all sorts of things, including yoga,
but the void will never be filled - they will end up
losing their eternal soul.
: 192 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

We live only once, and while here in this life, we

are to follow the example of Jesus Christ as presented
in the Bible. When we die, we must all appear before
the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may
receive the things done in his body, according to that
he hath done, whether it be good or bad
...Do you want to follow Shiva ...who is also
named the Destroyer - or Christ?
You have to make a choice: Do you want to follow
Shiva (who taught the science of Hatha Yoga) who
is also named the Destroyer - or Christ, who came to
heal and save, and who has proved by His life, death
and resurrection that He is Lord and that He loves us
without us having done anything to deserve it.
Yoga is not just a harmless physical exercise,
it opens the door to demonic control. On which side
do you ultimately want to stand? The devils or
Christs? The consequences are more serious than you
might realize.
John 10:10 - The thief cometh not, but for to
steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they
might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly (By, William Fife).
Place of Suryanamaskar and chanting of OM
in yoga practice:
Salutation (Bowing) to the Sun and repeating the
Vedic, Sanskrit term OM are the two unavoidable
ingredients for any successful Yoga Practice. However,
: 193 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

these two elements are not enforced in the West and

to non-Hindu practitioners in their Yoga exercises.
However, it is good to know the meaning and
purposes of these two elements to enable each of us
to make the trighyt choices in the light of your religion
and faith.
1. OM MANTRA DEFINED

Om (or Au m. , [ e~ u~ ] Sanskrit: C) is a sacred sound

and a spiritual icon in Dharmic religions. [1] It is also
a mantra in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. [2][3] In
Hinduism, Om is a spiritual symbol (pratima) [4]
referring to Atman (soul, self within) and Brahman
(ultimate reality, entirety of the universe, truth, divine,
supreme spirit, cosmic principles, knowledge)[5][6][7].
: 194 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

The syllable is one of the most important symbols

in Hinduism, [8] and is often found at the beginning
and the end of chapters in the Vedas, the Upanishads,
and other Hindu texts. [7] It is a sacred spiritual
incantation made before and during the recitation of
spiritual texts, during puja and private prayers, in
ceremonies of rites of passages (sanskara) such as
weddings, and sometimes during meditative and
spiritual activities such as Yoga [9][10].
Om is part of the iconography found in ancient
and medieval era temples, monasteries and spiritual
retreats in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. [11][12]
A related symbol IkOnkar is also found in Sikhism.
[13][14] The symbol has a spiritual meaning in all
Indian religions, but the meaning and connotations
of Om vary between the diverse schools within and
across the various traditions. The syllable is also referred
- )
--------),
aumkara (+E, Aumkara
-----to as omkara (+E, Omkara
.
.
and pranava (|h).
Om is an ancient Sanskrit word that was first felt
by rishis as they meditated. It was more about the
essence of Om than the chanting of it. Eventually as
the experience was shared the word came forth and
people started chanting it to get the experience of it.
So, you ask, what is the experience of Om?
It is somewhat difficult to describe with words
but Om represents everything. It is said to be the seed
of all of creation. Just like an acorn seed has the
immense power and beauty of a mighty oak tree. This
: 195 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

seemingly small word contains all the power of the

universe. It is the beginning, middle and the end of
it all or the past, present and future. Chanting Om
brings into your awareness the physical reality of this
world and your body, the subtle impressions of the
mind and emotions and the thoughts and beliefs of
your life and this world.
As the Mandukya Upanishad tells us the perfect
state or super conscious state and all that precedes it
are a part of Om. The sound can also be displayed
in its more complete form of AUM. When written
this way it appears as if the sound has three parts. In
actuality it has four.
The A (aahhh) sound represents the creation
aspect of the universe and all of the gross objects
within it. Ahh is the beginning of all sounds (this is
the most common letter that starts alphabets).
It connects us to our sense of self, the ego. With this
syllable you experience the existence of the world
through the activity of the senses. When you chant
this sound notice that it is produced in the throat and
back of the mouth where the tongue is rooted and
resonates in the lower abdomen. The first sound
embodies Sat, the sound that starts to bring you
back to unity, to the truth of your existence.
The U (oooh) sound signifies the maintaining
energy of the universe and the subtle impressions
of the mind. It connects us to an inner sense of
something greater than that which we can see and feel
: 196 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

with our senses. Oooh lets in lightness, clarity, balance

and goodness. When you chant this letter the sound
moves forward between the tongue and the palate up
to the lips and vibrates in the solar plexus. The sound
denotes Chit, an illumination of knowing, pure
wisdom.
The M (mmmm) sound characterizes the transformative energy of the universe and the thoughts and
beliefs of your beingness. This sound unites you to
the awareness of oneness. It allows you to slow down
in order to feel the connectedness of all that is. The
sound mmmm is produced by closing the lips and
it vibrates the crown of the head. The sound symbolizes
Ananda, to be at one with bliss everywhere with all
things.
The fourth sound is silence or anagata. It is the
vibration which is beyond verbal pronunciation. It is
pure consciousness of the Self or the Atman. The
unity of Sat Chit Ananda (I exist, I know, I am blissful)
is experienced here.
As you can see the experience of Om is
multifaceted. It truly is an experience of all in
everything. It is said that the sound of AUM includes
the entire process of sound and all other sounds are
included within it. Therefore, Om is called the seed
sound (bija), the original sound from which all other
sounds and worlds come from. This is why Om is said
to represent God, Brahman, Source, and Universal
Consciousness. Because it has the power to create
everything.
: 197 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

When chanting Om aloud, the sound will naturally

evolve through the tree phases corresponding tot the
three letters A-U-M. Like the experience of Om as a
sense of completeness and pure consciousness, the
three syllables are not distinct or separate phases,
but a continuous motion of the body, breath and
awareness.
Now, the true power of Om lies in the experience
of Om. Reading this can help the mind understand
but it cannot give you the experience. Chant this, by
yourself, with your friends, in your community. Allow
the experience of all the words above to soak into
your beingness. Feel the power each syllable has as the
sound vibrations move from the low abdomen,
up through the solar plexus and chest all the way to
the tip top of the head. Let the vibrations clear
and cleanse your energy system and chakras. Find
wholeness and healing in this easy to remember
mantra.
Many yoga classes begin and end with the
chanting of Om three times. This mantra allows the
energy of the group to begin the process of harmony
by breathing together and sharing in this mantra. It
tunes each person into themselves and reminds the
body and mind to set aside worldly concerns and to
turn your attention inward to the everlasting joy yoga
can bring. Repeating Om at the end of a session,
together with the traditional Namaste, is a
declaration of respect for the practice and each other.
: 198 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

It also allows you to carry forth the inspiration of

yoga to everyone and encourage growth in yourself
and others through your presence alone.
Om is an amazing tool that all people of all faiths
can utilize to bring focus and awareness to the greater
meaning of life.
Before the beginning, the Brahman
(absolute reality) was one and non-dual.
It thought, I am only one - may
I become many. This caused a
vibration which eventually became
sound, and this sound was Om.
Creation itself was set in motion by
the vibration of Om. The closest approach to
Brahman is that first sound, Om. Thus, this sacred
symbol has become emblematic of Brahman just as
images are emblematic of material objects.
The vibration produced by chanting Om in the
physical universe corresponds to the original vibration
that first arose at the time of creation. The sound of
Om is also called Pranava, meaning that it sustains life
and runs through Prana or breath. Om also represents
the four states of the Supreme Being. The three
sounds in Om (AUM) represent the waking, dream
and deep sleep states and the silence which surrounds
Om represents the Turiya state.
Because the first of the three states of consciousness
is the waking state, it is represented by the sound A
pronounced like A in accounting. Because the dream
: 199 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

state of consciousness lies between the waking and

the deep sleep states, it is represented by the letter
U which lies between the A and M. This U
is pronounced like the U in would. The last state of
consciousness is the deep sleep state and is
represented by M pronounced as in sum. This
closes the pronunciation of Om just as deep sleep is
the final stage of the mind at rest. Whenever Om is
recited in succession there is an inevitable period of
silence between two successive Oms. This silence
represents the fourth state known as Turiya which
is the state of perfect bliss when the individual self
recognizes his identity with the supreme.
The Symbol Om
Just as the sound of Om represents the four states
of Brahman, the symbol Om written in Sanskrit also
represents everything. The material world of the
waking state is symbolized by the large lower curve.
The deep sleep state is represented by the upper left
curve. The dream state, lying between the waking
state below and the deep sleep
state above, emanates from the
confluence of the two. The point
and semicircle are separate from
the rest and rule the whole.
The point represents the turiya
state of absolute consciousness.
The open semicircle is symbolic of
the infinite and the fact that the
: 200 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

meaning of the point cannot be grasped if one limits

oneself to finite thinking.
The Power of Chanting OM
1. The chanting of Om drives away all worldly
thoughts and removes distraction and infuses new
vigor in the body.
2. When you feel depressed, chant Om fifty times
and you will be filled with new vigor and strength.
The chanting of Om is a powerful tonic. When
you chant Om, you feel you are the pure, all
pervading light and consciousness.
3. Those who chant Om will have a powerful, sweet
voice. Whenever you take a stroll, you can chant
Om. You can also sing Om in a beautiful way. The
rhythmic pronunciation of Om makes the mind
serene and pointed, and infuses the spiritual
qualifications which ensure self-realization.
4. Those who do meditation of Om daily will get
tremendous power. They will have luster in their
eyes and faces.
Meditation on Om
Retire to a quiet place, sit down, close your eyes
and completely relax your muscles and nerves.
Concentrate on the space between your eyebrows and
quieten and silence the conscious mind. Begin to
repeat Om mentally while associating the ideas of
infinity, eternity, immortality, etc. You must repeat Om
: 201 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

with the feeling that you are the infinite and allpervading. Mere repetition of Om will not bring the
desired result. Keep the meaning of Om always at
heart. Feel Om. Feel that you are the pure, perfect,
all-knowing, eternal, free, Brahman. Feel that you are
absolute consciousness and the infinite, unchanging
existence. Every part of your body should powerfully
vibrate with these ideas. This feeling should be kept
up all day long. Practice regularly and steadily with
sincerity, faith, perseverance and enthusiasm in the
morning, midday and evening.
2. Suryanamaskar (Sun Salutation)
Following is a quotation from the Hindu Scholar
Shri K. Pattabhi Joise:
let me repeat that no asana practice is complete without
sun worship. Without its focusing of mental energies, yoga
practice amounts to little more than gymnastics and, as such,
loses meaning and proves fruitless. Indeed the Sur ya
Namaskara should never be mistaken for mere physical exercise
- for something incidental, that is, that simply precedes the
asanas of yoga. Therefore, it is necessary, before beginning
the sun salutations, to pray to Surya to bestow upon us the
good fortune of having only good thoughts, of hearing and
speaking only good words, and of attaining a sound and strong
body, so that we may have a long life and, one day, achieve
oneness with God.
For thousands of years Hindus have revered the
sun, which they call Surya, as both the physical and
: 202 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

spiritual heart of our world and the creator of all life

itself. One of the means of honoring the sun is
through the dynamic asana sequence Surya Namaskar
(better known as Sun Salutation). The Sanskrit
word Namaskar stems from namas, which means
to bow to or to adore. The familiar phrase we use
to close our yoga classes, namaste - te means you also comes from this root. The essence of its meaning
is the divine in me honors the divine in you. Each
Sun Salutation begins and ends with the joined-hands
mudra (gesture) touched to the heart. This placement
is no accident; only the heart can know the truth.
Surya Namaskar, or sun salutation, is included in a
regular morning ritual of prayer and worship. It is the
prayer of Lord Surya, the god of health.
The Sun Salutation is a prayer in motion. It allows
us to use the body as an instrument of higher
awareness, so that we can receive wisdom and
knowledge. The ancient yogis taught that each of us
replicates the world at large, embodying rivers, seas,
mountains, fieldsstars and planetsthe sun and moon
(Shiva Samhita, II. 1-3). The outer sun, they asserted,
is in reality a token of our own inner sun, which
corresponds to our subtle, or spiritual, heart. Here is
the seat of consciousness and higher wisdom (jnana)
and, in some traditions, the domicile of the embodied
self (jivatman).
There are twelve names for the sun in Sanskrit.
The Sun Salutation consists of 12 positions done in

succession. When one round ends, another one begins

in a perfect circle. Surya Namaskar is a general tonic
and complete warm-up for the entire body, which can
be done just as is, or as a warm-up before yoga asanas.
The Sun Salutations are said to remove bodily and
mental tensions, improve circulation, stimulate the
nervous system and raise the body heat. All joints are
loosened and lubricated. It offers great flexibility to
your spine. The muscles of the abdomen, pelvis and
spine are toned and strengthened. The breathing is
regulated, thereby calming the mind. If practiced slowly,
it has a calming effect. If practiced briskly, it is
invigorating. There are many variations on Surya
Namaskar, but here is one version:
History and Practice
Surya Namaskar is as rich in symbolic and mythic
overtones as it is in physical benefits. Theres some
disagreement among authorities over the origins of the
form. Traditionalists contend that the sequence is at
least 2,500 years old (perhaps even several hundred
years older), that it originated during Vedic times as a
ritual prostration to the dawn, replete with mantras,
offerings of flowers and rice, and libations of water.
Skeptics of this dating maintain that Sun Salutation
was invented by the raja of Aundh (a former state in
India, now part of Maharashtra state) in the early 20th
century, then disseminated to the West in the 1920s
or 1930s. However old Sun Salutation is, and whatever

it may originally have looked like, many variations

have evolved over the years.
In Hinduism, Surya is the chief solar deity, son of
Dyaush or Indra. He has hair and arms of gold, three
eyes, and four hands holding water lilies - the flower
that longs for the dawn. He is the only Indian god
ever known to be always shown wearing knee length
boots and in some cases distinct metal (copper) gloves.
The boots are an invariable rule in his sculpture as is
the atibhanga posture, the immobile erect stance of
perfection, the god who is the Cosmic Pillar and
support of the universe. In Hindu religious literature,
Surya is notably mentioned as the visible form of
God that one can see every day. Furthermore, Saivites
and Vaishnavites often regard Surya as an aspect of
Shiva and Vishnu, respectively. For example, the sun
is called Surya Narayana by Vaishnavites. In Saivite
theology, Surya is said to be one of eight forms of
Siva, named the Astamurti. His names depicting his
aspects, offspring and functions are many. He is
Savitur, the stimulating and animating Power of the
Sun; Pushan, the Messenger and Knower of the Ways;
Vivasvat, the Brilliant; Bhaskara, the Light-maker;
Dinakara, the Day-maker; Loka-Chakshuh, the Eye of
the World; Karma-Sakshi, the Witness of the Deeds;
and Graharaja, King of the Constellations. He is also
extolled as Aryaman, clear, discerning aspiration, and
Bhaga, happy spontaneity and the right enjoyment of
things which dispels the dream of error, sin and
suffering.

The Sun is the vision of the divine, whose light fills

all the worlds; it is also the cosmic symbol of the
Supreme. Surya is possibly the most popular Vedic
God. In Rig Veda III 62.10 he is worshipped as
Savitr, the source of life and light. He is also the source
of inner enlightenment as the famous gayatri mantra
suggests:
Om bhurbhuvahsuvah
Tat saviturvarenyam
Bhargodevasyadheemahi
Diyoyo nah prachodayat
O splendid and playful sun, we offer this prayer
to thee; enlighten this craving mind; be our protector;
may the radiance of the divine ruler guide our destiny;
wise men salute your magnificence with oblations and
words of praise.
Sun worship is often mentioned in the Ramayana.
Before Rama goes to fight Ravana, sage Agastya
advises him to worship Surya and chant the Adityahridayam, which destroys enemies, gives victory,
removes all sins and sorrows, and gives light to the
world. In the Mahabarata, the Sun is described as
Deveshvara, the God of Gods.
Start your day with reverence for the sun, and
harness its life-giving energy with Surya Namaskar.
Each Sunday morning, Christopher Key Chapple
opens his 8:30 yoga class with eight rounds of Surya
Namaskar (Sun Salutation). Students at the Hill Street

Center in Santa Monica, California, reach their arms

toward the sky and then fold forward to the ground
as if in prostration to the sun, expressing the same
reverence for the life-giving solar energy as did the
ancient yogis.
Repeating the sequence in each of the four cardinal
directions, the students perform a silent yet powerful
ritual of gratitude. Chapple, a professor of Indic and
comparative theology at Loyola Marymount University,
says the sequence not only wakes up the body but also
calls us to stretch our minds and spirits to the corners of the
universe, allowing us to feel the vast expanse of the cosmos
within the movement of our bodies.
To Chapple, Surya Namaskar is nothing less than
the embodiment of the Gayatri mantra, a sacred
prayer to the sun. As we sweep our arms up and bow
forward, we honor the earth, the heavens, and all of life in
between that is nourished by the breath cycle, he says. As
we lower our bodies, we connect with the earth. As we rise up
from the earth, we stretch through the atmosphere once more,
reaching for the sky. As we bring our hands together in
Namaste, we gather the space of the heavens back into our
heart and breath, acknowledging that our body forms the center
point between heaven and earth.
While its not always taught with such auspicious
intentions, the humble Sun Salutation - performed in
studios across the country as an energizing sequence
that links the body, breath, and mind - is nonetheless
deeply potent. It revitalizes every aspect of your being,
: 207 :

from physical to spiritual, says Shiva Rea, creator of

Prana Flow Yoga and founder of the Global Mala
Project.
Rea prefers the Sanskrit name for the sequence,
arguing that the translation to the English Sun
Salutation doesnt capture the intention and
experience of the word namaskar. Salutation, she
says, seems so formal and stiff. It has nothing to do
with the heart. Namaskar means to bow, to recognize
with your whole being. Reaching up, bowing forward
to the earth in prostration - the meaning is inherent
in the movement. Eventually, you are going to have an
ecstatic experience of the life force entering your
body.
Surya Namaskar also embodies the spirit of yoga
in the West: It is intensely physical but can be infused
with devotion. And like so much about yoga today,
it reflects both ancient ideas and modern innovation.
Understanding its history and meaning will allow
you to bring the healing energy of the sun and a
connection to the Divine into your own practice.
Practice - and Surya Namaskar, after it was grafted
on to it - is an innovation that has no precedent in
the ancient Indian tradition, but it was rarely
formulated as mere gymnastics, says Mark Singleton,
author of Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern Posture
Practice. More often, it was conceived within a
religious [Hindu] framework, and was seen as a spiritual
expression as well as a physical one. But in modern
: 208 :

India, for many people, it made complete sense for

physical training to be conceived as a form of spiritual
practice, with no contradiction implied.
So, it appears that Krishnamacharya was influenced
by both athletics and spiritual practice, and it was the
emphasis he placed on the breath and on devotion
that set his teaching of yoga asana apart from a purely
athletic endeavor. According to Mohan, co-author (with
his father, A.G. Mohan) of the forthcoming From
Here Flows the River: The Life and Teachings of
Krishnamacharya, it was the attitude of Surya Namaskar
that Krishnamacharya cared about. Whether he was
teaching the Vedic mantras or the sequence of
postures, the intention was the same. One is offering
salutation to the Divine, represented by the sun, as a source
of light removing the darkness of a clouded mind and as a
source of vitality removing the diseases of the body, says
Mohan.
Krishnamacharya taught the sequence to his
students, including K. Pattabhi Jois (founder of
the Ashtanga Yoga system), B.K.S. Iyengar (founder of
the Iyengar Yoga system), and Indra Devi (recognized
as the first Western woman to teach yoga around
the world). These students went on to become
internationally prominent teachers and to inspire
much of the practice in the West. As a result, Sun
Salutations became an integral part of our modern
practice.

Conclusion:
This article comes to you to give you some light
on Yoga and enable you to make right choices on
the matter. Therefore, let me conclude with few
questions to you:
@ If you are a Christian, what shall you do about
Yoga?
: 210 :

Winning Cultists to Christ

How can you advocate Yoga for Christians after

reading the sarcastic and yet true statement of
the Hindu Pundit, Baba Prem Vedavisharada?

How can any Christian be not burnt by playing

with the Yoga fire?

Why should you try to pick out some

clean items from a contaminated basket
of superstitions?

Is it wise to argue, this far and not farther in

signing up for Yoga?

Let me counsel you my friend:

Do not run into risk when you are not sure

about Biblical stand on it.

Avoid it if your conscience gives you doubt

( Rom. 14:23).

Flee from even the very appearance of evil

(1 Thes. 5:22-24).

Sign up for exercises that does not have any

religious essence.

@ Salvation is available here and now and you can be

assured of it :

Your inward looking will only reveal your sin and

inadequacy. Your outward looking to Jesus alone
will give you salvation (Acts 4:12; John 14:6;
Rom. 10:13).

Salvation cannot be obtained by self - discipline

and self-realization. Jesus alone can save. Offer

of salvation is from Christ and you must

receive that.

Salvation is not disappearance into oblivion, but

eternal life in heaven with God.

Repent of your sin and receive Jesus Christ as

your Savior and Lord- for true peace and eternal
