Dear Band Director,
It is my pleasure to present the 20072008 Belwin
catalog of new music for concert bands of all levels.
Building on the creative energy of our outstanding
team of composers and arrangers, it is always our
goal to introduce a wide variety of musical choices
within our educationally-sound series to ensure you and
your students the greatest opportunity to succeed.Youll find
original contest and festival works, arrangements of folk and
classical repertoire as well as arrangements of music from around
the world.Of course, were always pleased to provide the hottest
pop literature arranged to our same series standards.
The CDs included in this package contain excerpts for all of our
newest concert band selections.The first disc includes titles from
our Young Band, Beginning Band and Very Beginning Band series
for young and developing bands. The second disc demonstrates our
new Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Classic Band titles as well
as a few gems from the Donald Hunsberger Wind Library for more
experienced ensembles.Be sure to visit alfred.com/downloads

Meet the Composers

Leroy Anderson
Firmly entrenched in American
popular culture, his music can
be heard almost everywhere.
A composer of distinctive and
delightful orchestral miniatures,
Mr. Anderson built a catalog of well-known
works including Sleigh Ride, The Syncopated
Clock, and Blue Tango.

Jerry H. Bilik
Jerry Bilik is an American composer, arranger,
songwriter, conductor, and director of stage
productions who has worked with Dick Van
Dyke, Leonard Bernstein, Barbra Streisand,
and Neil Diamond. He served with the USMA
Band from 19551958 as their chief arranger
and has taught at Wayne State University
as well as his alma mater, the University of
Michigan. He is currently the vice president
for creative development for Disney on Ice.

Jerry Brubaker
Exclusive Writer

Jerry Brubaker has written

many works for band and
orchestra including originals
and transcriptions. He served
for years as chief arranger for the United
States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. and
is a graduate of the Eastman School of
Music (NY) and the Catholic University
of America (DC).

Jack Bullock
Exclusive Writer

Recognized as an authority in
the field of instrumental music
education, Jack Bullock is in
demand as a guest conductor,
clinician, and adjudicator. Dr. Bullock holds
bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in
music education.

Frank Erickson
Born in 1923 in Spokane, the legendary
Erickson arranged for military bands during
WWII and earned BM and MM degrees from
the University of Southern California where
he studied composition with Halsey Stevens.
Mr. Erickson taught at UCLA, San Jose State
College and served as musical editor for
several band catalogs. He served as an active
clinician, guest conductor and lecturer until his
death in 1996.

Ralph Ford

Exclusive Writer

Ralph Ford is associate

professor of music and director
of bands at Troy University (AL).
He is in constant demand as a composer,
arranger, clinician, technology consultant,
adjudicator, and conductor.

Donald Hunsberger
Donald Hunsberger is retired
from his position as conductor
and music director of the
Eastman Wind Ensemble and
Eastman Wind Orchestra of the
Eastman School of Music (NY). He has been
deeply involved in wind band development
and repertoire stimulation throughout his
career and is a widely sought-after conductor,
composer, and arranger.

Victor Lopez
Exclusive Writer

Former lead trumpet player

for the Miami Sound Machine,
Victor Lopez is currently
Executive Director of the Division of Life Skills
and Special Projects. An acclaimed composer
and arranger, he holds music degrees
from the University of Florida and Florida
International University. Mr. Lopez has recently
completed his doctoral degree in Educational
Administration and Supervision at Florida
International University.

Kevin Mixon
Kevin Mixon teaches
instrumental music in Geneva,
New York. He holds degrees,
summa cum laude, from
Syracuse University (NY) and
the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign).
In addition to composing, he is rapidly
gaining recognition as a noted consultant,
clinician, and prolific author within the field
of music education.

Roy Phillippe
Roy Phillippe has written a
prolific body of work that has
been performed by many
leading ensembles, and has
worked with such musical
legends as Stan Kenton and Henry Mancini.
He holds a music degree from Kent State
University (OH).

James D. Ployhar
Exclusive Writer

James Ployhars career spanned

19 years of public school
teaching in addition to numerous
clinics and workshops. He was
one of the most well-respected composers in
the field of music education, having over 600
credited music publications.

James P. Ripley
James C. Ripley is Assistant
Professor of Conducting and
Ensembles at the Eastman
School of Music and Conductor
of the Symphonic Wind
Ensemble at the University of Rochesters
River Campus. He teaches undergraduate

conducting at Eastman and serves as

Associate Conductor of the Eastman Wind
Ensemble and the Eastman Wind Orchestra.
Dr. Ripley received his D.M.A. in conducting
from the Eastman School of Music, where he
studied with Donald Hunsberger.

Elena Roussanova
Lucas
Elena Roussanova Lucas was
born and raised in Moscow,
Russia and started her music
education at age three with the
noted piano teacher Anna Artobalevskaya.
Elena received her music degrees at IppolitovIvanov College of Music (Piano) and the
Tchaikovsky Conservatory (composition).
Elena is a member of the prestigious Russian
United Composers Union. She is currently
Assistant Professor of Composition at the
Berklee College of Music, (MA).

Robert W. Smith
Robert W. Smith is internationally
known and respected for his
wealth of compositions and
arrangements. He holds music
degrees from Troy University
(AL) and the University of Miami (FL). He is
currently a Professor of Music at Troy University
(AL) teaching music composition, production
and business.

Michael Story
Exclusive Writer

Michael Story has written

extensively for college, high
school, and junior high
school groups, as well as for
professional groups including the Houston
Pops Orchestra. He is a solid and dynamic
writer and holds degrees in music from the
University of Houston (TX).

Carl Strommen
Carl Strommen teaches
orchestration and composition at
the C.W. Post Campus of Long
Island University (NY) and was
Director of Bands at Mamaroneck
High School (NY). An ASCAP award winner, he
continues to maintain an active commission,
clinic, and writing schedule. Mr. Strommen is a
graduate of Long Island University (NY) and
The City College of New York.

Douglas E. Wagner
Douglas E. Wagner is the former
chair of the Performing Arts
Department of North Central
High School in Indianapolis,
Indiana. Devoting much of his
time to composition and arranging, he has
published works for choir, band, orchestra,
piano, and voice.

Happy 100th birthday

Leroy anderson!
A

t the height of his career in the mid-1930s,

Leroy Anderson began arranging for Arthur Fiedlers
Boston Pops Orchestra. Later, Fiedler encouraged
him to write his own tunes for the Pops. His 50+
compositions virtually define the sound of the
contemporary American pops orchestra.

In 2006, the instrumental community

lost two of their most prolific and
cherished figures, Warren Barker and
James D. Ployhar. Though they are no
longer with us, their music lives on
throughout the world.

Warren Barker

(Grade 3)

Within the concert band community,

Warren Barker was very well known
for his many fine arrangements of
music from Broadway musicals and
Hollywood films. His Capriccio and
his Concertante for Solo Piano and
Band are outstanding original compositions. Barker
received his formal education at the University of
California, Los Angeles, and he studied privately
with Henri Prentis and Mario CastelnuoveoTedesco. He served as staff music director for
Warner Bros. Records from 1948 to 1960 before
becoming a freelance composer for television and
motion pictures. He wrote scores extensively for
many television series; a partial listing includes
Bewitched, Daktari, The Flying Nun, The Ghost
and Mrs. Muir, Ripcord, That Girl, Brackens World,
My World and Welcome to It, and Room 222. A
resident of Red Bluff, CA, Barker kept active as a
frequently sought after composer and arranger. He
served as guest conductor of the Foothill College
Symphonic Wind Ensemble in 1988 and 1989.

James Ployhar remains one of the

most respected composers in the
field of music education, having over
800 credited music publications. He
was the author of the Contemporary
Band Course, which was translated
into French and Norwegian, and is now in use
throughout Norway.
Mr. Ployhars extensive background in orchestration
includes work with Knud Havalde of the Danish
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. His music has aired
on network television, and has been performed
internationally in Europe, Japan and the Pacific
Rim nations.
In addition to over 19 years of public school
teaching, Mr. Ployhars career as an educator also
covered numerous clinics and workshops at the
college and university level. His academic credits
included a BS from Valley City State University
(ND), an MA from Northern Colorado University,
and graduate study in composition under Morris
Hutchings Ruger at California State University-Long
Beach. His frequent appearances as a clinician/
conductor were enthusiastically welcomed
throughout the United States, Canada, Norway,
Germany, and England.
Mr. Ployhar was the recipient of the National
Band Association Citation of Excellence offered for
outstanding contributions through bands and band
music. He also received the Distinguished Alumnus
Award from his alma mater and was a dedicated
member of the American Bandmasters Association.
