Assignment No. 1
(NME-602 MD-2)- To be submitted by 10/3/16

Q 1) (Attempt Any two Parts of the following):

(a) A pair of gears is to be designed to transmit 4 kW at 600 rpm of the pinion to a gear
rotating at 150 rpm . 20 degree FD involute teeth are to be used . The centre distance should
be as small as possible. Only from strength considerations (Lewis Equation), determine the
module, face width & number of teeth on gears, assuming spur gear drive or helical gear
drive.
(b) A pair of carefully cut gears with 20 involute teeth is to transmit 25kW at 300 rpm of the
gear at a speed reduction of 5:1. The pinion should not be smaller than 76 mm in pitch
diameter & is made of forged C-30 steel with a hardness 250 BHN, and drives cast iron gear.
Select a suitable spur gear or helical gear pair & determine module, number of teeth & face
width of the gears.
(c) Give an account of failure of gears. What condition must be satisfied in order that a pair
of spur gears may have a constant velocity ratio?
Q 2) (Attempt Any two Parts of the following):
(a) A 100mm(pcd) helical pinion drives a 300 mm(pcd) gear. The pinion shaft has 60 N-m of
torque applied , and the pressure angle & helix angle are 20 degree & 30 degree respectively.
Determine the tangential force, radial force & the axial force on the gear.
(b) Give an account of gear classification. Name the gears that can be used for non-parallel &
non-intersecting shafts.
(c)A hardened steel worm rotating at 1250 rpm transmits 12 kW to a phosphor bronze gear
with a transmission ratio 15:1. The centre distance is 225mm & teeth have 14 1/2 FD
involute form. Design the drive.
Q 3) (Attempt Any two Parts of the following):
(a) Discuss the advantages & disadvantages of stub gear tooth. (1)For a hardened steel worm
& gear the centre distance is 480 mm. Transmission ratio is 20. Find the axial module & lead
angle.(2) A double threaded worm has a lead angle of 20 degree . For a pitch of 30 mm, what
is the diameter of the worm?
(b)

Answer the following in brief:

Interference in gear teeth & its remedy.

Formative number of teeths in helical gears.
Methods of gear manufacturing
What is conjugate action ? Differentiate between involute & cycloidal teeth.

(c) A 20 degree normal pressure angle helical pinion having 20 teeth & helix angle of 30
degree transmits 3kW at 30 rev/s . The speed ratio is 4, normal module is 4mm & the face
width is 36mm. Calculate the maximum contact stress in the tooth if the gear & pinion are
made of steel.
Q 4) (Attempt Any two Parts of the following):
(a) 2) A pair of helical gears are used to transmit 18 kW at 8000 rpm of the pinion. The
teeth are 20 degree stub in diametral plane & the helix angle is 45 degree. The gear & the
pinion have a pitch diameter of 320 mm& 80 mm respectively. Both gear & pinion are made
of cast steel with a allowable static strength of 100 Mpa. Suggest a suitable module face
width for the gear pair & check the strength of the design in wear.Take modulus of elasticity
for cast steel as 2*105 Mpa & es = 618 MPa.
(b)A pair of worm & worm wheel is designated as 1/30/10/10. The input speed of the worm
is 1200 rpm. The worm wheel is made of centrifugally cast, phosphor bronze & the worm is
made of case hardened carbon steel 14C6. Determine the power transmitting capacity based
on the beam & wear strengths.
(c) Calculate centre distance, speed reduction, worm & worm wheel dimension for worm
gear designated as: 1/30/10/8

Q 5) (Attempt any one part of the following ):

(a) Explain worm gear terminology along with their advantages/disadvantages &
applications. A worm gear box with an effective surface area of 1.5 sq.m is operating in still
air with a heat transfer coefficient of 15 W/m2 C. The temperature line of the lubricating oil
above the atmospheric temperature is limited to 50 C. The worm gears are designated as,
1/30/10/8 . The worm shaft is rotating at 1440 rpm & the normal pressure angle is
20.Calculate the power transmitting capacity based on the thermal consideration.
(b) Design the teeth for two herring bone gears for a single reduction speed reducer whose
velocity ratio is 3.80. The speed reducer is to transmit 27 kW when the pinion turns 3000
rev/min . The helix angle should be 30 & the teeth are to be 20 stub in the plane of rotation.
The length of the face of the pinion should not exceed twice the pitch diameter.
