establishmenttenyearsago.Inhonoroftheirimportancetothecommunity,PCHwillcelebrate
their10thAnniversaryat5p.m.onApril6,2016attheSojournerTruthNeighborhoodCenter.

Thiseventwillbringtogetherdonors,friends,communitymembersandstafftocelebrateall
theyveaccomplishedincreatingdiverseandhealthycommunities.

Guestswillenjoymusicprovidedbythelocalbrassband,SojournerTruthNeighborhoodCenter
Drumlineandthelocalmarchingband.Alocalrestaurantorcommunitybasedorganizationwill
provideHorsdoeuvres.

misplacedbyKatrinabacktoNewOrleans.Inourfirst10yearswevehelpedover412
individualsandfamiliesbecomehomeowners,andwecantwaittocelebratewiththem.

ProvidenceCommunityHousingfostershealthy,diverseandvibrantcommunitiesbydeveloping,
operatingandadvocatingforaffordable,mixedincomehousing,supportiveservicesand
employmentopportunitiesforindividuals,families,seniorsandpeoplewithspecialneeds.The
organizationsgoalistoassistresidentsinattainingselfsufficiencythroughaprogrammodel
thatleadtoeducation,employmentandhomeownership.Providencehasdevelopedaframework
ofsupportiveprogramsandresources,housedattheSojournerTruthNeighborhoodCenter,as
partofitscommitmenttothecommunity.ProvidenceprovidesresidentsoftheFaubourgLafitte
andsurroundingneighborhoodswithqualityprogrammingforchildren,seniors,adultsand
youth.

HistoryNarrative

TerriNorth,PresidentandCEOofProvidenceCommunityHousingmadeithermission
toformanorganizationthatwouldaddresstheimmediateneedsforaffordablehousingafterthe
devastationofKatrinaIn2005,ourcommunitywasshatteredandourliveswereturnedupside
downbyHurricaneKatrina.Eventhoughwegrievedourlosses,thepeopleofthiscommunity
beganputtingthepiecesbacktogetherimmediately.
TheArchbishopoftheRomanCatholic
ChurchofNewOrleans,AlfredHughes,asksTerriNorth,JimKellyandCharlotteBourgeoisto
helpthecityinitseffortstobringback,andprovidehousingfor,allthepeoplewhowere
displacedbecauseofHurricaneKatrina.Ayearlater,in2006,ProvidenceCommunityHousing
wasestablishedandbecamean
independentnonprofitcommunitydevelopmentcorporation.
ThemissionofPCHistofosterhealthy,diverseandvibrantcommunitiesbydeveloping,
operatingandadvocatingforaffordable,mixedincomerentalandhomeownershiphousing,
supportiveservicesandemploymentopportunitiesforindividual,families,seniorsandpeople
withspecialneeds.Thiscommitmenttothecommunityiswhatinspiredthemtocreatethe
SojournerTruthNeighborhoodCenter(STNC),thehubofalltheservicesPCHoffersforthe
residentsoftheTreme,Lafitteandsurroundingneighborhoods.
PCHhascreatedathreetierstructuretofulfilltheirmission.Thismodelincludes:Real
EstateDevelopment,Homeownership,andCommunityBuildingandEngagement.In2009,they
propelledtheirrealestatetierforwardbyworkingwithEnterpriseandL+Mtodevelop
FaubourgLafitte,adynamiccomplexofmixedincomeaffordablehousing.Faubourgisoneof
fourNewOrleanspublichousingcomplexesredevelopedafterHurricaneKatrinaintohealthier
communities.
In2014,Providencetooktheircommitmenttocommunitymemberstoanewlevelby
providingcommunityservicestomorethan3,900communitymemberslivinginthe
Treme/LafitteneighborhoodthroughcommunityserviceinitiativesatSTNC.Providing
supportiveservicestohelpindividualsleadsthemtolivemoreselfsufficientlives.Infact,these
servicesweresowidelyreceivedthat,inJulyofthatyear,PCHlaunchedacasemanagement
servicemodel,whichaddressedtheimmediatesupportneedsofunstableindividualsand
families.

PCHiscommittedtohelpingNewOrleaniansandhavemetthemanychallengesof
rebuildingandrehabilitatingpropertieswithastrongandunyieldingdetermination.Todate,
PCHhasdevelopedmorethan1,200unitsofhousingandhelped412individualsandfamilies
becomehomeowners.Providencehasmaderealchangeintheaffordablehousingmarket
postKatrinaandarecommittedtoalltheworkyettocome.AsNorthsaid,Therewillneverbe
awaytohealallthewoundsKatrinacaused,but,workingtogether,wecanmakethecityabetter
placeforallofus.

Providencedevelopsquality,energyefficientandaffordablerentalsforseniorsand
mixedincomefamiliesinpropertiesscatteredthroughoutNewOrleans.

PCHpartneredwithUjamaaCommunityDevelopmentCorporationin2007toopenSt.
Ann,aseniorcommunityintheTremeneighborhood.TheLouisianaHousingFinanceAgency
awardedProvidencetaxcreditsvaluedatmorethan$38milliontorebuildandrevitalizefive
residentialcommunitiesforlowincomeseniors.Inthenextfewyears,PCHpartneredwith
ChristopherHomesandtheSistersoftheHolyFamilytoopenfivenewInns.PCHevenraised
$3milliontoprovidecomprehensivesupportservicestoassisttheseniorsastheyreturnedhome.

InMarch2009,PCHcompletedconstructionofSt.Bakhita,acomplexwith100new,
affordablegreenhomesforfamilies.Thesehomeshavetransformedtheneighborhoodandwere
sopopularthatanadditional16apartmentswerecompletedonthepropertyinMarchof2011.

options,fromloanapplicationandapprovaltoclosingthedeal.
PCHprovidesfundingintheformofsoftsecondmortgagefinancingtomakehomes
affordable.
Thisfundingallowsbuyerstobetteraffordtheirmonthlymortgagepaymentwhilealso
buildingequityintheirhome.

Thehomeownershipprocessisadauntingtasktothinkaboutandtakeon,andPCHhasbeenso
successfulbecauseofthathandholdingprocessfrombeginningtoend.Beyondthat,their
successhascomefrombuildingacommunitywithonehomeowneratatime.

toaffordableandtimelytransportation.
EighthundredandfortysixindividualshaveaccessedPCHsonsiteCapitalOne
ComputerLabwith193participantsworkingonspecificcomputerbasedtraining
programs.
FourhundredandeightyeightresidentsinPCHsJobReadiness/Employmentprogram
havebeenreferredtotrainingprograms.
Onehundredandtwelveofthoseresidentshaveeithersecuredemploymentorare
currentlyinaprogram.
