Assignment 1: Information Literacy

Part 1
First scholarly journal article.
a) List the keywords you used to find the articles.
I used the key word emerging technology in the CCBC Library search engine to obtain
4,644,602 results but further narrowed my search when I limited the search to Available
in Library Collection, Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals, and Academic Journals
obtaining 1,072,031 results.
b) Identify the database you used.
I used the CCBC Smart Search to research the emerging technology topic.
c) Why did you choose this database?
I chose this database because I know that CCBCs Library database is approved by the
school and the professors and that the resulted articles, if I were to further write an essay
on these articles, would be a good academic source.
d) Cite DB article 1 in APA or MLA format.
.This is the MLA formatting for my first article:
Spitsberg, Irene, et al. "Capitalizing On Emerging Technologies." Research Technology
Management 58.4 (2015): 17. MasterFILE Premier. Web. 13 Feb. 2016.
e) Insert a screen print of the search results to show you filtered to only review scholarly
articles (take a screen print of the entire window). Use the windows snipping tool,
CTRL+Prtscrn, ALT+Prtscrn or FN+Prtscrn then paste it into this document

b) Identify the database you used.

I used the Science Direct search engine to research the emerging technology topic.
c) Why did you choose this database?
I chose this database for two reasons. First, because it was in the CCBC Librarys
database system, so I knew Science direct would be academically correct. Second, I
chose Science Direct over the other technological databases, such as Science Journals,
GreenFILE, and others, because the database was described as, Large collection of
science, technology and medicine in full-text (current + last 9 years) and bibliographic
information in the CCBC Library database. To me, that seemed current with todays
occurrences.
d) Cite DB article 2 in APA or MLA format.
This is the MLA formatting for my second article:
Aharonson, Barak S., and Melissa A. Schilling. "Mapping The Technological Landscape:
Measuring Technology Distance, Technological Footprints, And Technology
Evolution." Research Policy 45.(2016): 81-96. ScienceDirect. Web. 13 Feb. 2016.
e) Insert a screen print of the search results to show you filtered to only review scholarly
articles (take a screen print of the entire window). Use the windows snipping tool,
CTRL+Prtscrn, ALT+Prtscrn or FN+Prtscrn then paste it into this document.

Part 2
a) Write a paragraph summarizing the article in 3-4 sentences. Include the title of the article.
I read Wait not in vain from The Economist which was about organ
preservation. Rana sylvatica, a frog, has a special ability to replace the water from their
body with glucose mobilized and freeze their body when facing lethally cold
temperatures without damaging their organs to keep them safe and then thaw out their
organs when the weather warms up. Researchers are trying to accomplish this feat to help
save more lives by finding a way to safely and effectively freeze and preserve organs
from organ donors and then thawing out the organs when the appropriate time comes that

they need them. Major ramifications occur, however, when freezing human organs
because humans organs are filled with a great deal of water and when water freezes, it
crystalizes, damaging the organs tissue. Various researchers are further exploring
cryopreservation, the conservation of organs in cold temperatures, to help achieve future
preservation of organs to those who need them most.
b) Cite Internet article 1 in APA or MLA format.
This is the MLA formatting for the Wait not in vain article:
Wait not in vain. The Economist. 6 Feb. 2016. Web. 13 Feb. 2016
Part 3
a) List the keywords you used to do the search.
I used the keywords organ preservation in the zdnet.com search engine.
b) Cite Internet article 2 in APA or MLA format.
This is the MLA formatting for the article:
Fang, Janet. Supercooling organs buys time for transplants. ZDNet. 30 June 2014. Web.
13 Feb. 2016.
c) Run the same search (using the same keywords) on two different search engines. Identify
the search engines you used.
I typed in organ preservation in search engine Google and search engine Yahoo.
d) Create a table to compare the results from the two search engines was one search
engine better than the other, why, how. How many search results did you receive? Etc.

articles.

I noticed that when I typed in organ preservation in both search engines, both of them
resulted with the same article as their first one. From this, I conclude that both search engines
keep current with new research.
Part 4
a) Time when was it written? Has it been updated?
Wait not in vain was written February 6, 2016. No, the article was not updated.
b) Relevance does it relate to your topic or answer your question?
Wait not in vain does relate to my topic emerging technology. To come up with a
machine that will gently, efficiently, and cautiously freeze organs is definitely and
emerging find.
c) Authority who is/are the author(s)? Are they qualified to write about this topic? How do
you know?
The authors were not shown; however, The Economist is a credible source as they stated
on this site:
http://www.economist.com/blogs/freeexchange/2008/10/how_credible_are_we
d) Accurate is the information trustworthy? Is it supported by evidence? Has it been tested
for accuracy?
Yes, the information is trustworthy and supported by evidence through observations and
tests.
e) Purpose why was it written, to inform, sell, persuade? Is there a bias or is the material
objective?
Wait not in vain was written to inform the public of the research happening to help
preserve organs for a longer period of time. This article was unbiased due to the fact that
it was telling of researchers work and nothing more.

Internet article 1
The ease of finding an article on the Internet is fairly easy. However, there are so
many results and many of them are not published and/or credible, so sorting through
them can be tedious. The articles found are very current and up to date giving the latest
research results to learn from. With Internet sources, before you even delve deep into the
article and research, it is important to find out if the source is credible, which can be
difficult.
Database article 1
Finding articles in a library database is very easy and compatible with the
Boolean Search. The articles found in the database, however, are not as current with the
times, dated more than 30 days of the current date you are researching the topic.
Authority is much easier in a database because the database only accepts articles of
credibility.
