was taught throughout the week. The rubric is attached below.
V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives
Overall, the students did a great job on this unit. They showed a strong
understanding of the topic, Dental Health. The students were engaged with
questioning, discussions, visuals, and hands-on activities throughout. For my preassessment, I assessed them on a kid writing prompt. The students had to finish a
sentence that read, I take care of my teeth by and then drew a picture to go
along with what they wrote. For this pre-assessment, the students were
encouraged to use their prior knowledge on the topic of Dental Health whether
it was how to brush your teeth or what do you use to clean your teeth. The
students performed well with only points taken off for major grammatical errors.
Since I assessed my students before beginning the lesson on what they
already knew about taking care of their teeth. I figured I could better assess
them at the end of the unit on what they specifically learned throughout the unit
about taking good care of their teeth. I used practically the same sentence starter,
which read, I will take care of my teeth by I also used the same rubric to

score the students with adding only minor changes. The rubric was split into two
sections. The students were scored based on their topic, meaning if they related
the picture and sentence together along with writing about something that pertains
to dental health and taking care of their teeth. They were also scored on their
grammar. Since it is approaching the end of the school year, I figured the students
should be making improvements with their writing and spelling. Therefore, I
assessed the students on whether they followed grade appropriate grammatical
rules such as putting a period and spelling words correctly or close to it based on
what they hear. The students were able to earn a total of six points.
Overall, the students did an excellent job. Out of my 15 students, 12 of
them received full credit. This meaning, they received the highest number of
points possible for each section on the rubric, in which they received a 6/6. My
other 3 students who did not receive full credit lost points when it came to not
staying on topic and having grammatical errors that made it hard to comprehend.
Two students have lost 1 point each for not staying on topic and/or not relating to
what was taught throughout the week. One student said, I will take care of my
teeth by visiting the dentist with my pet dinosaur. The other student said, I will
take care of my teeth by brushing my dogs teeth. Therefore, these two students
didnt show me anything specifically that they learned on how they can take
care of their teeth. My other student who did not receive full credit lost one point
when it came to their grammar. This student lost 1 point for misspelling words
that werent really common mistakes for their grade level. It seemed as if they just
wrote down any letters and werent really listening to letter sounds as they spelled
the word out. They also forget about their punctuation (period) at the end of the
sentence. Hence, 3 out of my 15 students received a 5/6.
In addition, I assessed the students on their participation and how they
engaged with the riddle activity. I used this as their formative assessment. I
simply gave each student a check mark if they did so. All students received
credit for this portion of the assessment.
B. Remediation Plan
For my one student who did not receive full credit due to grammatical
errors, they will continue to be engaged in daily writing/grammar lessons.
The teacher will pay closer attention to their progress and write down specific
letter sounds that they are still struggling with so that they can specially work
on them during intervention time. For my two students who lost credit due to
not staying on topic or writing something that related to what was taught
during the unit, they will be later assessed during recess or center time on how
they can take care of their teeth. They will be informed of what they can do
and then will be questioned during this time once again to ensure that they
comprehend the importance of dental health.
C. Personal Reflection

1. How was my time-management throughout the lesson?

Throughout the lesson, time-management wasnt as great as my
past lessons. The Kid Writing took a little longer than was expected due
to having each of the students present what they wrote/drew. Though, it
did put extra time on the lesson, I was happy because it helped me to
better assess each student as well. This meaning, it helped me to
understand exactly what they drew instead of just taking a guess and
maybe mistakenly taken off points because the picture doesnt display
what they were trying to write about. Due to this, I wasnt able to squeeze
in their ceremony without rushing. Therefore, with minor changes, I
presented the students with their certificate and toothbrush right before
they began their recess.
2. Did the students receive enough instruction to comprehend the
importance throughout the whole unit?
Based on the students feedback during questioning and discussion
as well as their assessment results, I believe enough instruction was given
to the students. During the students overall review, each student
participated in some way. If there were students who didnt raise their
hands as often, I called on them independently in which they answered
correctly. Some students did need more prompting then others at times.
However, they still showed a strong understanding of the topic of Dental
Health.
3. What were some of my strengths and weaknesses throughout the unit?
Strengths:
o Creative review game (got students engaged and moving
around)
o Great discussion and questioning- used prompting
techniques such as, Ill wait until everyone has an
answer or So-and-so knows; does anyone else know?
o Positive Ceremony to engage students and show how
proud you are as well as how important the topic of Dental
Health is.
Weaknesses:
o Time-management (maybe just read the students responses
yourself out-loud instead of having each student come to
the front of the classroom-then question if needed).
o More reinforcement of behavior management when needed
(if students dont want to listen or participate, have them
sit in the back of the classroom so they dont distract the
students around them)
