III. Subject Matter/Content
A. Prerequisite skills

1. Knowledge of how to take care of your teeth.

2. Understanding of food that is healthy vs. not healthy.
B. Key Vocabulary
1. Safe- protected from or not exposed to danger or risk; not likely to be
harmed or lost.
2. Unsafe- not safe, dangerous.
C. Big Idea
1. The students will be able to differentiate and identify foods that are safe
and unsafe for your teeth in order to maintain good oral health.
D. Content
1. How can different foods affect your teeth?
a. Unsafe vs. safe food
2. How much unsafe food can you consume before it has an effect on your
teeth?
a. Brush your teeth right after eating sweets/sugary foods.
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. The teacher will start off the lesson by saying, Yesterday, we learned
about oral hygiene skills to keep our teeth clean and healthy. Today, we are
going to dig a little deeper and learn what foods are safe and unsafe for
our teeth. In order to maintain a healthy smile, we not only have to have
good oral hygiene skills but we also have to watch what we eat.
2. The teacher will then ask, What foods do you think are safe for your
teeth? and What foods do you think are unsafe for your teeth?
a. Allow students to collaborate and then call on volunteers to
answer. As the students answer, write their answers on the board
using a t-chart (one side titled safe and other side titled
unsafe).
3. The teacher will then say, What do the foods that are unsafe for your
teeth have in common? (Sugar, sticky) and What do the food that are
safe have in common? (not sticky, low in sugar)
B. Development
1. The teacher will pass out a worksheet to each student portraying a maze.
The students goal is to arrive at the healthy tooth. However, the student
cant bump into any foods that are unsafe for their teeth.
2. Before beginning the worksheet, have the students go through the maze
and circle all the unsafe foods with a red crayon.
a. Discuss the items the students circle.
3. Afterwards, the teacher and students will complete the maze as a class.
4. Have students put their worksheets away in their folder.

5. The teacher will then pass out a tooth worksheet that displays two teeth.
Their goal is to make one tooth a happy tooth (draw smile face) and make
the other a sad tooth (draw sad face). They will also receive a bag of items
that display unsafe and safe foods for your teeth.
6. Each student will first categorize the foods by either safe or unsafe.
Once they are finished, the student will hold up their thumb showing that
they completed the first step.
a. The teacher /teachers aide will come over and check if they
categorized the food items correctly. If they made a mistake, the
teacher will prompt them in the right direction to fix it.
7. The students will then make a collage on each tooth using their Sad
Tooth/Happy Tooth worksheet.
a. The students will glue the appropriate foods on the correct tooth.
b. Place unsafe foods on the sad tooth and safe foods on the happy
tooth.
8. If students finish early, they may go on their IPads or draw quietly.
9. When the students complete their collage, the teacher will call on
volunteers to share.
a. Have students come to the front of the classroom and tell their
classmates what they put on each tooth and why.
b. Teacher will guide them through presenting by asking questions
throughout.
10. The collages will be collected when all students are finished and used as a
formative assessment.
C. Closure
1. To close the lesson, the class will participate in a trivia game. The class
will be split up into two separate teams. Each team will have a Sad
Tooth and Happy Tooth posted on the board.
2. One student from each team will come up the board at a time. The teacher
will display a food that is either safe or unsafe for your teeth. The two
students at the board will either swat the sad tooth or happy tooth using a
fly swatter.
a. The teacher will display 10 pictures; given each student a turn.
b. The score will be taken using a tally sheet.
3. All participates will receive a sticker at the end of the game.
4. The teacher will have the students return to their seats and close the
lesson with a discussion on what they learned throughout the lesson.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. For students who fall easily behind, provide a buddy for extra
assistance.
2. Move students to the back of the room that become easily distracted by
other students around them.
3. Provide extra time for students to complete assignments/activities if
needed.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative
a. The students will be assessed on their Sad Tooth/Happy Tooth
collages. The students will be assessed by using a checklist split into
three portions. Each portion will be worth 2 points each.
i. Did the students categorize the unsafe and safe foods correctly
before beginning collage?
ii. Did the student use the appropriate foods to complete the sad
tooth?
iii.
Did the student use the appropriate foods to complete the
happy tooth?
2. Summative
a. There is no summative assessment at this time.
V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives
Based on the formative assessment results, the students performed great.
This assessment was considered my main performance assessment on the
students within the unit. The goal of the students was to sort various foods
based upon if they were safe for your teeth or unsafe for your teeth. I assessed
the students using a checklist that was split into three different assessment
questions. The questions consisted of, Did the student categorize the unsafe
and safe foods correctly before beginning the collage? Did the student use
the appropriate foods to complete the sad tooth? and Did the student use the
appropriate foods to complete the happy tooth? Each question was worth two
points making it a total of 6 points the students were able to earn. The
students first goal was to sort the pictures of food they received before
pasting them onto the collage. This step set the stage for the other steps to
follow.
Based on my 15 students who were present, 13/15 students received full
credit which was a 6/6. My other two students lost 1 point each when it came
to, Did the student categorize the unsafe and safe foods correctly before
beginning the collage? These two students had minor errors which included
getting 1-3 pictures confused and/or switched around. I didnt deduct the 2
full points because the students were able to correct their mistake after having
a little prompting. Therefore, 2 out of my 15 students received a 5/6.
B. Remediation Plan
Based on the results of the assessment, I concluded that no major
remediation plan is necessary. The students showed a strong understanding of
safe vs. unsafe foods for your teeth by providing me with feedback when it
came to questioning and having open-discussions. Although, I did have two
students who did not receive full-credit, I was able to talk to them on the side
and remind them of what to look for in safe and unsafe foods for your teeth.

They were able to correct themselves and continued to answer questions

correctly when it came to the closure of the lesson. However, this topic will be
reviewed when closing the unit of Dental Health. Therefore, students will be
reminded of the material and assessed further.
C. Personal Reflection
1. How was my time-management throughout the lesson?
Throughout the lesson, time-management did not seem to be a
problem. I also get nervous because you never know with kindergarten
especially when you are incorporating a hands-on activity. I was able to
start the lesson when planned and ended with a little extra time. Therefore,
I was able to squeeze in a read-aloud on one of the books that was in my
text set. I had the students choose. This was actually really good because
it allowed the students to engage in more content and also calmed them
down before heading to lunch.
2. Was enough instruction provided in order for the students to fully
comprehend what was being taught?
Based on feedback from questioning, discussions, and assessment
results, I believe that the students did receive enough instruction to
comprehend the material that was being taught. There could never be
enough reinforcement throughout a lesson especially for younger students.
Therefore, I do wish I wouldve put more emphasis on ice and acid
foods being unsafe for your teeth. I found that many of my students were
surprised when they learned this because you automatically assume that
ice is good for you due to it being water. Students also think limes and
lemons are good for you but they never considered how bad acid is
towards your teeth. Overall, the students gave positive feedback which
showed me that is was an effective lesson.
3. What were some of my strengths and weaknesses throughout the lesson?
Strengths:
o Good discussions with the class.
o Added more content based material than what was planned.
o Got everyone involved-gave students enough time to think
before answering.
Weaknesses:
o Provide more visuals.
o If students dont want to participate-pay no mind to them.
o Reinforce behavior management when students arent
listening and/or paying attention.
