Agent
Agents are sent to Main Events, Side Events, and Investigations to perform an
action. They bring back a report at the beginning of the next turn.

Character
Character refers to anyone in the game that isnt the player, an Agent, or the
King. The definition of Character therefore includes all the Nobles and any minor
NPCs that appears in Main Events, Side Events, and/or Investigations.

Character and Investigations Log

The Character and Investigations Log is a book where the player can find
information about Agents and how they work. They can also see short
biographies of all the Nobles, and their portraits. Any and all Evidence gathered
from Investigations will also be logged on the appropriate Characters page.

Conspiracy
A Characters plan to assassinate the King.

Current and Past Events Log

The Current and Past Events Log is a bundle of scrolls where the introduction to
every single Main and Side Event is stored in chronological order.

Evidence
Evidence is the information you gather about Characters during Investigations.

Investigation Report
An Investigation Report is a letter brought in by an Agent after they have come
back from an Investigation. It contains the Evidence.

Letter From the King

A Letter From the King is how the player is informed of new Main Events.

Location
Main Event Notification
A Main Event Report contains details about actions taken and happening
pertaining to the previous turn during a Main Event.

Main Event Report

Pawn
6

A game piece which represents an Agent. Each Agent has a Pawn of their own.
They are visible at the bottom of the Map screen, on a narrow board. From there,
they are dragged onto the map to perform actions.

Portrait
The portrait of a Character (visible on the map and in the Character and
Investigations log), and/or the portrait of an Agent, only visible in the Character
and Investigations Log.

Report

Section 3 Overview
Game Summary
???

Structure Summary
Kingmaker consists of twelve different Main Events, and it culminates in a Royal
Wedding where the King gets married. The King is the host of these Main Events
and is at risk of being assassinated in each of them. As the spymaster, it is the
players job to manage their agents to find out who the possible assassin(s)
might be before the day of the Main Event. There are Scripted Side Events and
Trait Events during the Main Events that give clues to help the player. The player
can also Investigate individual characters to collect evidence, and then choose to
Arrest or Assassinate them.
The player will automatically move on to the next Main Event after completing
the preceding one.
Basic structure:

A change of Main Event will be marked by a Main Event Report which arrives at
the end, and a Main Event Notification which arrives at the beginning of the next
one.
The number of Scripted Side Events and Trait Side Events will vary depending on
the Main Event.

Platform

Kingmaker will be published on the Apple App Store and Android Store. The game
will be available to download on any device running iOS and Android.

Section 4 Agents
There are four (4) different types of agent, each of which is based on an
archetype. Each agent has:
-

The ability to investigate

A Personal Skill

Agents have their own Portrait as well as their own Pawn. The Agents Portraits
are used in and can be seen in the Character and Investigations Log, along with
short biographies detailing what their abilities are. Their Pawns are used in
Investigation Reports ??? and on the Map. ???

4.1 Agent Types

The Spy
The Spy is a sly individual with keen senses, stalking the shadows unseen and
finding secrets. They can range from trained professional to barely more than
thieves.
Spies are the most common and versatile agents, although they lack a Personal
Skill.
When investigating, spies have a higher chance of obtaining a higher level of
information (see Glossary), revealing the motives behind an action.

The Enforcer
The Enforcer is clearly indicated as being someone based on physical skill and
strength. The image should be based around the ideas of soldiers, thugs,
bodyguards, bounty hunters, warriors, etc. Think The Hound/Jorah Mormont from
Game of Thrones.
The Enforcer allows the player to use the Arrest option, which removes the
Character in question from play and will affect the Unrest Level based on the
evidence gained prior to arresting.

The Assassin
The Assassin is clearly indicated as being someone who uses subterfuge and
stealth. The image should be that of cat burglars, spies, saboteurs, and
murderers.
The Assassin allows the player to use the Assassinate option, which instantly
removes the targeted character from play, and increases the Unrest Level. This
provides the player with a method of stopping a conspiracy very quickly if
necessary.
9

When investigating, The Assassin has a chance (depending on the character

being investigated) of revealing details about assassination methods, such as
medicine being bought that could be easily turned into poison.

The Socialite
The Socialite is clearly indicated as being someone who is charismatic, wellspoken, influential, and duplicitous.
The Socialite allows the player to Spread Propaganda, which will reduce the
Unrest Level by 5%.
The Socialite will often obtain additional information from following
(investigating) characters.

4.2 Personal Skills

Arrest
Arresting a character can be done as a single action, in one turn, only by an
Enforcer. Arresting a character requires at least one previous investigation. If
several investigations had been done before, yielding different tiers of evidence,
the highest evidence tier is the one which counts (multiple tier 1 evidences wont
help with the unrest).
Arresting with different tiers of evidence will cause the following changes to
unrest:
Tier 1 (Innocent/Unrelated): +15%
Tier 2 (Mildly suspicious): +5%
Tier 3 (Highly suspicious): -5%
Tier 4 (Incriminating): -15%

Assassinate
Assassinating characters will always increase unrest by 10%, but it can be done
even without any evidence.

Spread Propaganda
Spread Propaganda can be used by Socialites. Doing so will reduce unrest by 5%.

4.3 Agent Pawns

Agent Pawns are used in the Map screen. The Pawns are on a board at the
bottom of the screen. From there they can be dragged to a Character to allow
them to act. The player can also tap on the Pawns to see which Agent they
represent and what possible actions they have.

The Spy
10

The Enforcer

The Assassin

The Socialite

4.4 Gaining an Agent

There are two ways the player can gain an additional Agent:
1. The player successfully completes a Main Event. The player will be
presented with an Agent Recruitment screen. The selected Agent will be
added to the Agent Pool, and their Pawn will be added to the board on the
map.
2. Specific Side Events will allow the player to recruit or swap Agents. Usually
this happens at a cost of Unrest Level.

4.5 Losing an Agent

There is one way the player can lose an Agent.
In specific Side Events, it is written that sending the wrong Agent will have them
killed or captured. If and when this happens, they are removed from the Agent
Pool, and their Pawn is removed from the board on the Map screen.

11

Section 5 Traits
The Cast of Characters includes all the Non-Player Characters (NPCs) in the
game. They are a pool of suspects, and can only interact with each other, and
not the player.
Each Character is given several traits, which firstly serve to create InterCharacter Events, and secondly obscure suspicious actions for the player.
Some traits conflict and the cast can interact with each other according to both
traits and random number generation.
For example:
The Dukes Son may have the Drunkard Trait. This means there is a X%
chance of him starting a fight with The Best Friend. In this case, if The Best
Friend has the Hot-Tempered Trait, it will ensure he will gain the Hates: The
Dukes Son Relationship Trait. Further Events can spring from this hatred
between the two Characters.
The trait system causes the Cast of Characters to act with personality without
the need for excessive scripting.

5.1 Trait Types

There are two different types of Trait.

Personal Traits
There will be two (2) Personal Traits for each Character. The Trait Pool is divided
into two groups of equal length: A and B. Traits which would not make sense
together are placed in the same group, as only one trait per group is chosen
when a Character spawns.
Group A

1 Poor
3 Cruel
6 Pious
8 Brave
9 Liar
10 Paranoid
11 Northern
15 Marksman
17 Rich
19 Rogue

Group B

2 Drunk
12

4 Loyal
5 Conspirator
7 Coward
12 Friendly
13 Antagonistic
14 Stupid
16 Ambitious
18 Martial
20 Clever

These pertain to the Character alone, and any interaction with other Characters
is non-specific.
For example:
The Drunkard Trait, in the previous example, affects what Events are triggered
by The Dukes Son. If another Character is needed in that event, a random
choice is made by the game. This is what is meant by non-specific.

Relationship Traits
Relationship Traits pertain directly to another specific Character.
Relationship Traits:

Friend
Enemy

When a character is spawned, he or she is assigned to one of two teams.

Characters in the same team are allies, characters in opposite teams are
enemies.

Section 6 Assassination Methods

Here is a list of all the Assassination Methods in the game, accompanied by the
traits associated with them.

Section 7 Events
7.1 Main Events
Main Events are Events where one or multiple Conspiracies targeted at the King
take place. Only one (1) Main Event can take place at a time.
???

14

Main Event Notification

The player will be notified of a Main Event in the form of a Main Event
Notification, which looks like a Letter From the King.

7.2 Side Events

Side Events are divided into two types.

Side Event Notification

Side events are shown directly to the player through a pop-up screen. This
screen can only appear when the player is viewing the Map screen. It will include
the description of the event, a generic image, and present the choices the player
has (Send Agent and Ignore). There will also be verbal clues to indicate to the
player which agent will obtain the best result from any given Side Event.
If the player chooses to Send Agent, they then have to select one of their agents
to send. The Agent Selection will appear on the same screen upon tapping Send
Agent. The result of their actions will be reported in a Side Event Report at the
end of the Turn, during which the agent is unavailable.

Scripted Side Events

Scripted Side Events occur on specific turns between a Main Event Notification
(start of a Main Event) and the end of the Main Event.
Scripted Side Events are always related to the current Main Event, and serve to
give clues as to who the Conspirator(s) might be.
The player will receive a Scripted Side Event Notification to inform them of the
start.
The player will be able to Send an Agent, or to Ignore the Event.

Trait Side Events

Trait Side Events are randomized, and are about various stabilizing or
destabilizing (Unrest Level) events occurring throughout the city. The player will
be able to send different agents to the event, which will affect its result.
Side events may be in small chains, meaning some of them may be related to
each other. However, many are single-time occurrences. The results of
succeeding/failing Side Events almost always results in some kind of change in
the Unrest Level and is the main way to affect the Unrest Level.
Side Events are tagged with a Seriousness Level, which determines when they
appear. Side Events with a High Seriousness Level have potential to affect the
Unrest Level by a higher percentage. They also carry a higher risk of causing the
player to lose an Agent. Side Events with a High Seriousness Level will only
appear when the Unrest Level is also high.

15

Mild: Any Unrest Level

Medium: >50% Unrest Level
High: >70% Unrest Level
The result of this is that the game will become more risky the closer the player is
the losing.

Section 8 Investigation
Investigation is the main method the player will interact with the Cast of
Characters.
Sending an agent to a Character or Location is accomplished by dragging the
icon to the desired destination and then choosing an option:
1 - Investigate
2 - Action (Arrest, Assassinate, Spread Propaganda)
3 - Cancel (Will send the agent back to the agent pool so he can be dragged
elsewhere)
At the beginning of every turn in a Main Event, the player can select a Character
and choose to assign an Agent to them. Different Agent Types are more effective
at investigating people with certain behaviours, depending on the Characters
Traits.
There are a number of Locations on the map, in which Cast members can take
residence when they move into the city. Their location is fixed, but the characters
will choose a random empty one. Empty residences do not show up on the map
until a character moves in them, to prevent clutter.
Only one agent can be sent to each person or location in a given turn. Agents
which are currently involved in Side Events cannot be used for investigation in
that turn.

Section 9 Conspiracy Chains

Conspiracies are triggered at the beginning of a Main Event, and conspirators are
chosen as soon as they start from the currently available cast.
Conspiracies are in essence attempts to overthrow or assassinate the King, or
destabilize his regime.
Conspirator behaviours are not random, but they are tiered depending on the
assassination method. These tiers are be scripted as subroutines, with some
steps being randomised (depending on the conspirators other traits) to prevent
them from becoming too predictable.
Assassination methods are randomly chosen when the conspirator trait is
assigned.
16

Section 10 Turns
The player can spend as long as they like in the Desk screen, Map screen,
Character and Investigations log etc. and it wont affect the progression of the
Turn.
A Turn only ends when the player has used all available Agents. Alternatively, the
player can end a Turn by tapping on the End Turn button on the bottom left
corner of the Map screen.
If the player taps the End Turn button before using all available Agents, a
notification will pop up reminding the player that there are Agents that are still
available.
A new Turn will start immediately after. The results of actions takes in the
previous Turn are shown at the beginning of a new Turn.

Figure 1 - Next Turn Button

Figure 2 - Next Turn Button Tapped

Section 11 - Evidence
Evidence is information about a Characters actions.
Evidence is gathered through Investigation. Any Evidence gathered is included in
the Investigation Report at the beginning of the next Turn after the Turn the
agent(s) was sent to Investigate.
Send Agent(s) End Turn New Turn Receive Investigation Report
including Evidence

11.1 Tiers of Evidence

Evidence is ranked by suspiciousness and organized in four tiers. It can be
reviewed at any time from the characters file.
Tiers of Evidence are important when it comes to Arresting a Character. Arresting
with different tiers of evidence will cause the following changes to unrest:
Tier 1 (Innocent/Unrelated): +15%
Tier 2 (Mildly suspicious) +5%
17

Tier 3 (Highly suspicious) -5%

Tier 4 (Incriminating) -15%
Arresting a Character who only has Tier 1 Evidence against them (i.e. they are
clearly innocent) will increase the Unrest Level by 15%.
Arresting a Character who has Tier 4 Evidence against them (i.e. they are clearly
guilty) will reduce the Unrest Level by 15%.
Evidence doesnt stack, meaning only the highest Tier of Evidence that a
Character has against them will count.
For example:
If the player arrests a Character who has Tier 1 Evidence and Tier 2 Evidence
against them, only the Tier 2 Evidence counts, and the Unrest Level will increase
by 5%.

Section 12 Story
Kingmaker is set in an unnamed medieval city. The King getting married soon
and is hosting a number of events before the Royal Wedding. He has tasked you,
the spymaster, to use your agents to make sure all the events go smoothly and
according to plan. There are Nobles around who wish to see the King dead!

Section 13 Game Progression

The Main Events occur in a fixed order leading up to the Royal Wedding.
There is a total of 12 Main Events, including the Tutorial (which can be skipped).
NOTE: All numbers are temporary and subject to change.
NOTE: All Main Events start at a minimum of 5 turns from the previous one,
regardless of the Starts at number.

Terminology defined:
Main Event Intro
The player receives a Letter From the King informing them about the event.
Main Event End
This is the day/turn of the event. If the player has not eliminated the
conspirator(s) by this point, the King dies. All active murder plots end on this
turn, unless specified otherwise.
Script Side Event Intro
18

The player receives a report informing them about a Script Side Event. They are
always related to the assassination method of the conspirator. A conspirator who
plans to kill the King with a crossbow will trigger one of the available intros for
the Crossbow Script Side Event.
All of them are on Dropbox in the Side Events folder.
Script Side Event Clue
The player receives a more detailed clue related to the intro they received.
All of them are on Dropbox in the Side Events folder.
Script Side Event Succeeds
The Conspirator involved in the Script Side Event in question kills the King. If the
player hasnt eliminated them by this point, the game is over.
Trait Side Event
A Trait Side Event is triggered by ANY of a random characters traits. It can even
be triggered by one of the Conspirators trait, but NOT the actual
conspirator trait.
Investigation
When none of the above is triggered, the player is free to investigate people on
the map by dragging agents to them.
Investigations are on Dropbox in the Investigations folder.

Clue

Section 14 Unrest Level

There is a meter visible at all times at the top of the Map screen. The meter
shows the Unrest Level, which represents how much Unrest there is in the Town
i.e. how happy or unhappy the people are.
The People will grow unhappy if the player Assassinates or Arrests Characters for
no apparent reason. The People will be happy if the player Assassinates or
Arrests Characters who are clearly guilty of crimes.
At the beginning of the game, the Unrest Level will be 50%. Successfully or
unsuccessfully completing Events will move this counter up or down. If it reaches
100%, a rebellion overthrows the king and the game is over.
Certain Side Events will only trigger if the unrest is particularly high, and may
give a chance to put it back to safe levels.
Feedback for various level of unrest is given by both the darker and more
dramatic tone of the Side Events received and by a different background musical
track, depending on the Unrest Level (one for each of the three Unrest Levels:
<50%, 50%<X>70%, and >70%).

Section 15 Win States

The player will have beaten the game after successfully completing all twelve
(12) Main Events.
After all Main Events are over, there are no more Side Events or Investigations.
The last Main Event will yield a Main Event Report (A Letter From the King), and

27

the player will have the option to either Restart the game or Exit to the Start
Screen.

Section 16 Fail States

17.2 Screens
Map
The map is the main gameplay screen, where the player can see agents and
locations, send them on missions, and act on side events. The main view is that
of the map itself, which acts as a background.
In the Map screen, the player sees a Map of the World. It includes Characters
(when they become active).
The Map occupies the entire screen, except for a small section of Desk on the left
hand side that can be tapped to return to the Desk screen. ???
The player can zoom in in one section by tapping with two fingers and dragging
outwards; the opposite motion will zoom out, while dragging them both in one
direction will pan the view. The HUD, e.g. buttons, desk, unrest meter and agent
board, will stay fixed in position and size.
Character Portraits (as well as Agent Pawns, only when they are dragged to the
map) are scaled up and down depending on the zoom level, but they will be
limited to an appropriate maximum size and minimum size. (Needs testing to
decide the appropriate ones)

Locations
30

Characters can take residence in any of a number of pre-determined locations,

which is decided randomly when they spawn; from then on, their portrait will
appear on said location. They will not move, as the counters represent their
places of residence.

Agents
On the bottom right of the screen, the Pawns of the available agents are placed
on a board, which can be scrolled through. From there, they can be tapped to
show their name and role, and dragged to a Portrait to allow them to act.

Desk
From the Desk, the player can access the Character and Investigations Log,
Current and Past Events Log, Lockbox (Agent recruitment), and Keys (Title
Screen).

Keys (Title Screen)

Somewhere ??? on the Desk there are Keys that, when tapped on, take the player
to the Title Screen.
