Subject/Topic: Reading Comprehension Grade/Class: 3rd.Lesson


Date: 9/16/15
SOL: SOL 3.6 the student will continue to read and demonstrate
comprehension of nonfiction texts.
Content Outline (what you want students to learn in this
lesson):
The student will learn reading comprehension and use their
knowledge of the reading to transform and apply it into real life
characters.
Rationale:
It is important for students to understand nonfiction texts and be
able to differentiate between fiction so they can apply it to real life
scenarios. These skills will be carried into higher levels of learning.
Objective(s) of lesson:
The student will be confident in explaining what they learned in
the text that they read. The student will be able to learn from other
students through characterization and differentiate between fiction and
nonfiction texts.
Lesson Opening (hook):
Teacher will come in dressed up as nonfiction character and
demonstrate the skills of reading comprehension and applying to
characterization.
Connection:
The student will relate what they read in the book to real life
situations and apply the understanding into verbal explanation.
Instructional Strategies/Process:
The content will be presented by having students pick and
read an autobiography (20-30 minutes)
Each student will be responsible for comprehension and a
verbal action next day. (Each student has 10 minutes)
It will be individual work leading into a large group activity.
Products:
A written summary about the book that the student will use in
order to act out and then verbally present to the class.

Assessment:
The student will be assessed based off of how well they
comprehended their reading and how well they present the information
they learned to the class.
Closure:
After every student presents, the teacher will ask information to
the presenter to see how well they understood the assignment and
have the students give positive feedback to classmates. Each student
will write down one fact they learned from each presentation.
Homework:
A ten-minute presentation and summary based off of their
autobiography they read. After all the presentations are over the
students then can be assigned a short paragraph to explain what they
learned most about all the presentations given.
Differentiation:
Understand the students reading abilities and comfort levels with
characterization. Also offer assistance and provide extra contact with
parents.
Materials/Equipment
Autobiographies, costumes and props for character dress up
