D. Procedure1. Begin with the Authors Purpose flip chart on the Promethean
board.
Explain that authors purpose is why it was written.
Go through the four purposes: Entertain, Explain, Inform,
and Persuade.
Entertain- To show a theme, event, or story for enjoyment.
Types of writing include (fiction) short stories, novels,
poetry, and drama. Ask the students some examples of
these.
Persuade- To convince readers to think, feel, or act a
certain way. Types of writing include advertisements,
editorials, speeches, bumper stickers, and billboards.
Inform- To give factual information about a topic. Types of
writing include a biography, encyclopedia, or news
articles.
Explain- Writing used to give directions or aid in a specific
task. Types of writing include directions, manuals or
recipes.
2. Review the Plicker Rules with the class. 1. No calling out. 2. Hold
your card up straight so I can scan it. 3. Once your number gets
a check mark you can put it down. 4. If its wrong dont worry
its not a big deal just try better next time. 5. Do not bend or
write on the cards.
Pass out the plicker cards to the students.
3. Introduce the activity- I will be playing a clip on the screen and
their job is to decide what the author/ director of the clips
purpose is. Did they make it to inform their audience, etc. Once
the clip is over they will vote on plicker and we will discuss what
the students think it is and they will have to defend their answer
with information from the clip.
Play the first clip- Inform- Bears
Clip 2- Persuade- Coca Cola
Clip 3-Entertain- Minions
Clip 4- Explain- How to make a PB and J
4. Closing- Review the four types of authors purpose. It helps us
discover why the author wrote it, it is to tell you something, to

get you to buy something, to entertain you, or to explain

something step by step. Identifying the authors purpose helps
you comprehend what you read. This week we will be reading
three books and we will be identifying the authors purpose.
