SPECIAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS .
FOR
MODEL 221372 ULTRA-HI-TEMP PROBE
INTRODUCTION
The Hi-Teap Probe is to be used in conjunction with the MX-10 Digital
Ultrasonic Thickness Gage whenever the material being gaged is at an elevated
temperature up to approximately 1,000°F (538) Cj. Ie is particularly
intended for use between about 400°F and 1,000°F (The standard Medel
221372 Probe is useful on materials whose temperature range up to about
600°F).
Hi-femp Couplant
Be certain to use a qualified/approved high temperature couplant to
assure optimum gaging results as vell as guard against exceeding the
couplants FLASH POINT (COUPLANT BURSTING INTO FLAMES).
THICKNESS COMPENSATION ON HOT MATERIALS - A correction factor must be
determined and used to achieve accurate readings on hot materials (the
velocity of sound changes with temperature). A general rule of thumb
is that the thickness readout will increase by about 0.5% per 100% for
steel. This value must be subtracted from the MX-10 reading in order
to more closely approach the actual thickness reading.
SETUP _AND OPERATION
1, Calibrate per “X-10 Operating Manual, except for the following: _
1.1 Use Lo Power Mode for calibration/setup.
1,2 Use Hi Power Mode for gaging of hot material.
*1,3 Allow one-minute cool-down cycle between probe applications to
hot surface.
